#Leadlap. A1: good morning. I’m Cory from TX. Proud Asst Principal of an amazing elementary school. What motivates me- collaborating with adults about doing what is best for kids.
A2: the greatest motivation is when a colleague who isn’t paid to motivate you recognizes your work. Seeing what your colleagues do creates a culture of compassion and care #leadLAP
Q2 is INCREDIBLY important b/c as a leader we should want to be building OTHER leaders...dont be hogging all the opportunities to show appreciation to yourself... #LeadLAP
A2: The main way is to be kind. When you are kind and nice to each other, when you support one another, there is a feeling of love and trust in the school. This brings more positive vibes and makes school a better place #LeadLAP
A2: Oooo. Good question! I think a lot of the same ways we try to. A kind card, out loud praise/recognition, asking questions with intent to put something into action in own classroom, just stopping by on a break to say hi. #LeadLAP
RIch Hayzler, MS Principal from NJ joining #leadlap a bit late. These two motivate me everyday to be a better father, teacher, Principal, husband and overall human being! Future Pirate leaders in the making!
A2: Consult each other. Ask for feedback. Have the kids thank their other teachers. Be generous with your resources (sub lesson plans, for example - save your friends some time and share!). Bring a cup of tea to someone who obviously had a rough morning. #leadlap
A2: We have our #praisewhileyouprint bulletin board up in the Ts Workroom! Ts drop notes of appreciation in colleagues' boxes to show appreciation to each other! #LeadLap
Hey all! I’m Krista, 5th grade teacher in SE Michigan. First ever #LeadLAP chat, but not new to the Pirate life! Spend most of the pirate life with #ditchbook . I’m excited to try new things this year!
A2: The first thing that pops into my head is the Pineapple Chart that @markbarnes19 has spoken about. Get Ts into eachothers classes and communicating is a great place to start
#LeadLAP
A2. I put up an Appreciation Station bulletin board in the staff lounge an left cards an push pins then put up thr first few to get things started #LeadLAP
A2-as leaders we must model this by having authentic/real connections w/ staff and provide ways for staff to observe each other and provide meaningful connections that leads to appreciation and teamwork! #Leadlap
A2: Staff can show appreciation by acknowledging hard work, successes, and cheering one another on. Participating in social events is so important to the culture - even on days you don't want to participate. Do it anyway! #LeadLAP
A2: A ? We ask during interviewing is how do you stay motivated and motivate others. I think appreciation goes right along with that. I want to her that they acknowledge effort in a variety of ways (cards, praise, smiles, hugs) #LeadLAP#rjllearns#rjlyear5
Show respect for staff members by not gossiping or allowing others to gossip. Listen to vent once but encourage person to have a conversation. Gossip is a culture killer! #LeadLAP
Also. When you see someone make a suggestion that isn’t listened to right away, but someone else makes the same suggestion and gets credit; drawing attention to the original idea can be very encouraging and motivating #Leadlap
That's a good point. Some people ARE paid to recognize our work but it's amazing to be appreciated for the little things and to be taken care of by our colleagues. #leadlap
A2. Each week, our principal publishes an enewsletter with a teacher SHOUT OUT section where colleagues can click a link to commend a colleague. For Teacher Appreciation Week, we sent the same link to students & let them join in to share the love! https://t.co/8xbeTCMrGd#leadlap
A2: Celebrate birthdays, bring donuts on a random day, tweet each other when you see something cool, @LEFforLISD does a changing kids lives award that parents can nominate staff members for... so many possibilities. #LeadLAP
2) little notes of encouragement. Peer observations and positive feedback. Get to know each other and have fun. Plan an activity together with shared students. Have fun together. Cover a part of class to give your friend a break. #LeadLAP
A2: As long as gratitude (&appreciation) is expressed authentically, it can be as simple as a hug or as grand as one wants to make it.
We all want to be seen and known, but most of all, we all need to feel loved - in all forms of connections including as colleagues. #LeadLAP
A2: Have a genuine and authentic conversation. One of the greatest gifts you can give to another person is allowing them to be the center of your world when you are talking with them. Always working on this. Fail often...but always working on it. #LeadLAP
A2: At staff meetings we have opportunities to share thanks and fails. All staff encourage each other in each of those! Especially the fails - usually leads to oh that happened to me once! #failforward#LeadLAP
A2: I wrote a blog post on how to create an affirmation station in your school that’s quick, easy, and costs very little! https://t.co/szsfUDuYn4#LeadLAP
A2b we also have a praise while you print station above our office printer with notes that can be personalized and shared with a staff member. #leadlap
A2: We have our #praisewhileyouprint bulletin board up in the Ts Workroom! Ts drop notes of appreciation in colleagues' boxes to show appreciation to each other! #LeadLap
A2 we start each staff meeting with teacher to teacher affirmations. I also leave index cards on the tables for staff to write affirmations to one another. #LeadLAP
A2: Last yr we had the secret sunshine committee (5 teachers) who split up the staff and would do random acts of kindness for them throughout the year. They knew their favorites...when they needed a pick-me-up. This was organically grown. My job was just to say YES #leadlap
Q2: Even a simple acknowledgement shows appreciation. Compliments, small treats and/or praise goes a long way and builds trust and respect. #Leadlap#allinthistogether#smile
Anonymous #actsofkindness@MyersElemSchool staff work and live life encouraging each other by showing up for the non-professional events in each other's lives #LeadLAP
A2: The main way is to be kind, caring and supportive of each other. Building a community where everyone trusts each other, looks out for one another and celebrates each other means that the students win in the end. #leadlap
A2: We cultivate a culture of gratitude & build in intentional time to show each other our appreciation. Some times it's writing TY notes to kick off mtg, some are more fun like TM WEEK OF WOWs where each day we fill in a colleague's name & post it outside their door. #LeadLAP
A2: Loved when my new staff gave a gift to veteran staff by gussying up the staff bathrooms w/ amenities. Also facilitated opportunity through honor cards —where staff speak one another’s honor—and provided thank you notes. Covering one another’s class. Shared planning. #LEADLAP
A2: My new professional learning coach plans on publicly giving “Grow, Tigers, Grow” certificates to Ts who participate in extra PD/data review sessions. Once Ts earn a certain number, we’ll give them a bigger prize. And, as always, Anchors! #LeadLAP
A2 we need to be a positive support structure ... letting each other know we are doing a good job. Share with that teacher when a student tells us what is happening in their class. Include them in he conversation #LeadLAP
A2- supporting one another, listen and SHARE... I also did a shout out board in the staff room and they left notes for each other... Recognize each others hard work #LeadLAP
A2: There are tried and true systems like handwritten notes, staff recognition awards and birthday celebrations. I LOVE simple things like giving credit when credit is due and acknowledging great collaboration at the end of every meeting. #LeadLAP
I have learned that I need to physically close my computer screen and turn my phone upside down...I want them to know they have my undivided attention.
#LeadLAP
A2: Have a genuine and authentic conversation. One of the greatest gifts you can give to another person is allowing them to be the center of your world when you are talking with them. Always working on this. Fail often...but always working on it. #LeadLAP
A2: Offering support and a listening ear when needed. Understanding and celebrating effort while encouraging growth. Sharing the greatness of others by shouting them out #LeadLAP
When a colleague shared something that frustrates them, instead of trying to fix it or convincing them “it’s nothing” respond with empathy and compassion and VALIDATE. That demonstrates appreciation #leadlap
A2 I'm not admin, but I periodically drop anchors of appreciation or small tokens into my colleagues mailboxes to let them know I appreciate them. #LeadLAP
A2: Tell each other specifically what they did or said that was so appreciated. Show others the same kindness that was shown to you. Spread the positivity with random acts of kindness through pay it forward ideas. #LeadLAP
A2: We cultivate a culture of gratitude & build in intentional time to show each other our appreciation. Some times it's writing TY notes to kick off mtg, some are more fun like TM WEEK OF WOWs where each day we fill in a colleague's name & post it outside their door. #LeadLAP
Q2:Showing appreciation can be words of affirmation, an offer of service, gifting an idea or bringing a treat, lend a listening ear #loveistheanswer#LeadLAP
A2: I think sometimes as admin I don’t often see as much, but I know it’s there because of the feeling and culture our school has. They support each other. #LeadLAP
A2 People are motivated by meaningful relationships. Building meaningful, personal relationships makes others feel seen, known, and valued. This is the most powerful way to appreciate someone--to see them and to know them. #leadlap
A2. By sharing how much they are valued, appreciated either verbally, Twitter shoutouts, or positive notes, We are #bettertogether for OUR kids❤️ #Leadlap
A2: recognize others' efforts and then let them know via handwritten note, public praise (digitally & verbally), etc. We have to create an environment of appreciation! #leadlap
When a colleague shared something that frustrates them, instead of trying to fix it or convincing them “it’s nothing” respond with empathy and compassion and VALIDATE. That demonstrates appreciation #leadlap
A2: we definitely can have the daily, spontaneous recognition of each other but why not also do a KINDNESS CHALLENGE! our staff did two last year and it was great! #LeadLAP
A2: Love when staff become like one another’s family. When they gather together to support colleagues in crisis and celebration. Notice one another. Care and encourage. #LEADLAP
Q2: #LeadLAP Many schools I work with have used “How full is your bucket” to create common language and a practice of filling other staff members bucket as part of the culture. Sticky notes, emails small signs of appreciation go a long way.
A2 Through engaging in conversations abt the real work happening in our classrooms, those authentic experiences that change us, the ones we want to invite others to share. And then sharing them with both classes, young & old. The learning grows exponentially! #leadlap
A2: Yes!!! We do Golden Arrow Awards each month where staff pass them to other members that are inspiring them- they keep them for the month and pass them along at faculty mtgs. We do a weekly #vbevip parking spot that is highlighted in our principals press too! #LeadLap
Something I’m chewing on; knowing HOW colleagues like and receive appreciation is paramount. I know folx who HATE public appreciation. Others who THRIVE on it. Private 1 on 1 acknowledgement also goes a long way of saying “I see you and appreciate you” #leadlap
A2: we surprise each other with our “favorites.” At the beginning of the year we fill out a google form with all of our favorites and share the document with the entire staff #LeadLAP#rjllearns#rjlyear5
A2: Our amazing secretaries challenged staff to write on a Thankful Wall in our Staff Rm. Staff wrote on a post-it note w/ their thanks for someone who had helped them. On Friday, the secretaries pulled one & that staff member got something fun from a local business. #LeadLAP
A2 how about we just talk to each other ... while making copies ... passing each other in hall ... not everything has to be school related ... we can laugh ... cost ZERO dollars #LeadLAP
A2: This year, I'm planning to add appreciation to the beginning of my team meetings -- giving everyone time to write one note to someone will (I hope) re-frame even the toughest of days. #LeadLAP#BalanceLAP
A2: I tried to use an Appreciations book. It was just a decorated notebook that got passed around where you would write a nice note to someone and then leave it in their box. After reading they would then pass it on with another note... #LeadLAP
A2 I'm not admin, but I periodically drop anchors of appreciation or small tokens into my colleagues mailboxes to let them know I appreciate them. #LeadLAP
A1: hey- Cindy Emerson, principal and lead learner @verobeachelem here ready to share the #vbevibe I’m super motivated by kiddos! Messages like this are what matters most! Relationships first! #LeadLap@mmiller7571
Something I once heard from one of my custodians; those signs are great, but honestly teachers and students knowing my name would be a better way to show their appreciation. That has struck me ever since #leadLAP
As leaders we have to set the appreciative environment. We want people to want to interact that way. Take your phone out...text someone you care about and tell them you appreciate what they do for you. Their response will let you know if you need to do it more often #LeadLAP
A2: Our Principal shares shout outs at Staff Meetings that our staff make for one another. We write down recognitions, appreciations, thank you's, etc...I love hearing what everyone catches others doing so we can all give props! #LeadLAP
A2 THIS! One of the leaders in my building posted this. Handwritten notes are my favorite. I try to model that with my own to staff often. #LeadLAP *She didn’t know she would end up on Twitter. :)
A2b: Campus Wide “tweet it out Tuesdays” using school hashtag #prmsrocks passing on @ToddWhitakers What Great Teachers Do Differently book on from teacher to teacher at each staff meeting! #TeacherMyth#LeadLAP

A3: Actually, I had a couple of @bfes_ltps parent meetings recently. The parents got together and sent me a fruit basket to thank me for listening and for my time #BFRocks#LeadLAP - Very nice!
A2: coming in late. Pat, Long Island. We have ten min Fri stand up mtings in a.m. where Ts shoutout great things about the week and we one another. I provide food! #LeadLAP
A2: I like making a staff shout out binder w a bunch of blank staff shout out sheets. The staff passes the binder along to one another by writing a shout out to a colleague ☀️😊🎉. #leadLAP Find template here: https://t.co/FI5XNmX6Ea
A3: so it was what I consider one of the most horrendous tech days in my class. I had to literally pull out my ether cable from my phone and run Ss laptops to submit their finals. Word traveled from my division leader to my P on going above & beyond for my Ss. #LeadLAP
A2. Utilizing staff shout out board, recognizing each others strengths and supporting each othed in our weaknesses. Being kind and loving to each other. As always Thank you goes a long way. #LeadLAP

One thing I always try to do is walk the talk! @drneilgupta just barely gave me the sweetest compliment via a tweet acknowledging my efforts. Simple things count! Thank you! #LeadLAP
Love the sticky notes idea- in college we did an activity where everyone had a blank paper on their back. Everyone went around and had to write something nice about that person. I used it as a health teacher. I’m likely going to start the year with it for staff. #LeadLAP
A3-an 8th grader from past year wrote a “thank you” note as she was taking a summer advancement class for HS and was thanking us for how well prepared she was. Proud that she is prepared but also that we instilled the virtue of kindness and taking time to thank others. #LeadLAP
A2 #LeadLAP: Each week, in my #MartinMemo, I highlight promising teacher practices and outcomes. I ask teachers to share highlights from the week as well. It has strengthen our #instructionalcore and #schoolclimate
I once received an anonymous hand-written note stating that I was known on campus as a great teacher who cared about students. I still have that note. It really boosted my confidence and made me feel awesome. #LEADLAP
A3 For me, it was as simple as a compliment. Someone saw the thought I'd put into something and called it out. They didn't necessarily praise the product, but they saw how much thought I'd put into the process. #leadlap
Professional social skills show appreciation to coworkers. Such as

2. No gossip
3. Following through on promises
4. Avoiding clicks
5. Being friendly
6. Forgiving quickly
7. Not making mountains out of molehills
#LeadLAP

A3: Our staff and learners created @flipgrid videos sharing what they liked about me. Touched my heart and something I can view on those days that are a little les bright #LeadLAP#rjllearns#rjlyear5
Most people really appreciated it but it did disappear periodically and get lost on some desks. So ... no, not everyone got a chance. But for those that did, they appreciated #LeadLAP
A3: My gym trainer just sent me a handwritten postcard in the mail to tell me how he appreciates the hard work and dedication I put into taking care of myself and our workouts. I though that was a pretty awesome motivator to keep it up - he works me darn hard! #LeadLAP
A2 I think we all lift one another up by sharing ideas welcoming one another into our classrooms celebrating successes picking one another up when we fall generally being positive sharing lunch together continuing to support one another as much as we can! #LeadLAP
A3. Connecting with other dedicated and passionate teachers is so inspiring! Shared some laughs and talked about finding those JOLT moments this week on episode 68 of #WellPlayED podcast with @mrmatera. Steel sharpens steel. Check us out! https://t.co/RWqbTwsOVo#leadlap
A3: I am beyond blessed that the staff in my building reaches out to me often to show appreciation. Kind words, texts, cards, "thank yous", and even random gifts of love. #LeadLAP
A3: @ryanssiemens was my first admin partner & was for 4 years. He never said no. He let me try, fail & encouraged to get back up. It was the best thing I could have ever asked for as a new AP. He showed me what true leadership is. #leadlap
A3: So simple. They told me my message mattered. Costs literally nothing! Also, love @AkramMosman observation about a person believing in you. #Hopedealer#LEADLAP
A2: #LeadLAP Important lesson I have learned is that we should praise people as they want to be praised. Not everyone likes their praise in public and we may be discouraging the behaviors we want. I suggest asking at the beginning of the year “How do you like to be praised?”
A3: I was a part of a group presentation and the positive comments people shared with us about our presentation, were amazing. I had no idea that sharing something little (to me) that I was doing in my classroom would be so appreciated by others. Share. Give feedback. #leadLAP
A2- At each staff meeting, the staff members who got the award at the previous staff meeting, give out the next Top Banana awards. It has been a great way for staff to recognize and appreciate each other. #Leadlap
#leadlap Kindergaten class gave me a heart each day for 2 weeks. Each heart stated why they appreciated me. Still on my door! Being honored as NDP 2018 is huge motivator. Challenge to be my best.
Q3: My amazing leader I met over the summer invited me for a tea party and encouraged me on my leadership journey @REDS1113 and then my campus leader acknowledged my passion @BrendaTGallardo for our students. Thank you both so much! #lovemydistrict#lovepositivity#Leadlap

A3: Mr. @mradamwelcome's #RunLAP is motivating me to exercise both my mind and body. My transition to Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools have shown so much appreciative to me, as a new employee for their school system! #leadlap
One year a group of us got together and got a gift card for our custodian ... he cried ... unfortunately we have not had a regular permanent custodian since he left. They are just as much a part of the school family. #leadlap
A3a: The other way Ts motivate me is by being willing to try ideas... @ShanHEALTH just rocked our 2nd summer read aloud! He built up suspense & mystery and threw in a location change to get kids on board. Now we have 2 more teachers signed up! #LeadLaphttps://t.co/YfWdmKpfR4
A3: Yesterday I got my new colleague set up on Twitter 🎉. There’s nothing better than school leaders learning from one another, sharing practices and being open to new ideas 💡. I felt appreciated that he wanted to learn from me 😊#leadLAP
#LeadLap A3: @basd_murray was just approved for her first administration position. She worked w/ me as an amazing G4 teacher for 10 years. She took me to dinner last week and we shared many words of appreciation and affirmation. Don't we all thrive on words of affirmation?
A3: When someone says "Thank you for inspiring, believing in & challenging me!" = fuel that gives me endless passion & energy. Thinking of some special notes & words shared w me recently. #LeadLAP
A3 I was not able to attend #iste2018 but two of my dear friends did attend they know and understand that I am a sticker junkie so they collected stickers and mailed them to me Did I mention they live in South Carolina and I live in Pennsylvania? These are true friends! #LeadLAP

My favorite last year was when my student asked if it was okay to solve a problem "his way." I took it back to my desk for a closer look & it took me 5 min to formally prove that, yes, it works. #Leadlap
#leadlap A3: @Coach_Rudy introduced me to like minded leaders that he knew would be excellent resources, colleagues and/or mentors for me to connect to as I continue my leadership journey.
A3: I was just reminded that Ss wrote thank you notes to a teacher or two in advisory and I recieved one from a student I was definitely not expecting it from. That was cool
#LeadLAP
A4: Ok - so the suggestions are not free - but got tons of ideas from this just book and am mapping out much of the year ahead! https://t.co/sdRVqABtN6#LeadLAP
A3:Received thanks and praise from parents at the celebration of our Summer Scholars program . A partnership between my district and the Local YMCA #LeadLAP

A3: Our S. Council kiddos made Shout Out boards for every teacher in the school where current and former Ss wrote notes of appreciate to us. They were posted on our doors for everyone to see. I even had some from parents pop up. Our doors ended up being covered w/love! #LeadLAP
A4: We have a board in the office and TVs all over campus where we post our Ts and Ss of the Month. Costs us nothing, allows everyone to see it. #LeadLAP
A3: While I was out of town & back-to-school mailings needed to get put together, #TMGenius leaders came in & got this important work done. They are the leaders & are so motivating. #LeadLAP
A4 - The gift of time! 30 minute snooze pass (late arrival), 30 minute early dismissal, or extended lunch break - their choice, just have to schedule it with me. #LeadLAP
A4 Offering to cover a teachers last block class on a Friday and have them go home early. Telling them, writing notes of appreciation, sending out a staff shout out telling them about the great things the staff memeber has done, post positive remarks on twitter #leadlap
A4. I'll let teachers know when I have free time to cover class for them for 10-15 min break, I also had a drawing for those who did my teacher challenges of the week and they got a free day off the day before Thanksgiving and I was their sub for the day #Leadlap
A4: Send a text. Stop and say something in person. Leave a note on their door/desk. Ask how they did that one amazing thing. Ask someone how they are doing - and MEAN IT. #LeadLAP
A4: high fives, notes in their mailbox shout outs over the intercom, telling their students how amazing they are, a simple thank you after a hard days work #LeadLAP
A3- I spent the last two days surrounded by colleagues from around the state at two different PD sessions. Listening and interacting with them keeps me inspired and gets me motivated for the upcoming year. #Leadlap
A4: Nothing better than simple words of appreciation on a post it note...and then when you find the post note has been stuck somewhere all year...reverse bucket filler for me! #LeadLAP
A4 Anonymous notes of affirmation left for staff members on their computer screen. I LOVE when a teacher shared with me they got one and they don’t know it was me. #LeadLAP
A4: My team uses totems, which are really just items lying around that are imbued with great meaning. A chess piece is our “king/queen of the momment” a pen represents a creative achievement and a Hawaiian leis means you need to relax. 😃#LeadLAP
A4: Simple notes and thank you's. I try to thank people daily and celebrate their greatness by shouting them out at meetings and on Social Media. #LEadLAP
A3: Send me a message thanking me for being there for them during a difficult time. Often, we do things without realizing the lasting impact it will have on others, so let’s make sure what we do & say is positive! #LeadLAP
I hear from educators daily, and I try to end every email with a “thanks for everything you do for our kids!” I also liked this story that I found today: #LeadLAPhttps://t.co/3BvsUQ14Nf
A4: Phone calls to their spouses or parents or kids to let them know how much they are appreciated. Always remember...everybody is somebody’s kid. Doing their job for a day build a tremendous amount of appreciation too. Questions are FANTASTIC @8Amber8 and @mmiller7571#LeadLAP
A4: I love sending Ts positive tweets that showcase the awesome learning in their classroom. 😊🎉Teachers need more recognition. It’s a tough profession & how cool is it when Ss are empowered and fully engaged in the classroom. Worth celebrating! #leadLAP
A4: sending an email to a staff membes’ spouse, kids, or parents, telling them the staff member is a difference-maker at work and thanking them for supporting him/her. #LeadLAP
Q4: Emails giving shout outs to staff are free and effective. Giving out smiles and being warm and friendly not only show appreciation but can shift the mood of the campus. Smiles are contagious. #LEADLAP
A4. Using Remind app or ocher messaging to send these messages to Ts once in awhile. Also, as mentioned before - handwritten notes of appreciation are mt favorite! #LeadLAP giving credit to authors by showing their names!
A3 #leadLAP we use a ‘My Favorites’ sheet for ALL staff - fave drink, color, snack, treat etc. we keep a binder in the office with everyone’s My Favorites. So, cafeteria monitor made your day- you can surprise her tomorrow with her favorite coffee.
Speaking of appreciation & motivation... things like this are free, powerful, and meaningful. Thank you for being you, @burgessdave! #LeadLAP#tlap#DBC50Summer
A4: We start every staff meeting w/ time for “Gold Stars” where any staff member can give a shout out. This summer, we asked our school community help me recognize staff via https://t.co/k4NqM8d9yY - sharing the appreciation w/ staff was so much fun! #LeadLAP
A4: Send notes, messages, stop by and talk, do something nice for them. Take a moment to show them that you care about them and appreciate them #LeadLAP
A4: sending an email to a staff membes’ spouse, kids, or parents, telling them the staff member is a difference-maker at work and thanking them for supporting him/her. #LeadLAP
You're doing great showing gratitude on Twitter for sure. From someone that has received a "like" or "reply" from you, it means tons! Keep it up! #LeadLAP
A4: Since our Principal was leaving this year after 16 years, we organized a dress up day in his honour! Kids loved it! Okay and the staff had SO much fun! We had to take 3 pictures cause we couldn’t fit everyone into 1 #LeadLAP
A4. Text messages. DMs on Twitter (or RT’s with comments). Super short emails. Timely, specific, and authentic. People like to know that they matter. #leadlap
A4 I visit classes and affirm teachers in front of students. Then I open it up for students to share why they appreciate their teacher. This has been so awesome to hear what students have to say and see how great it makes my awesome teachers feel. #LeadLAP
Find opportunities to be appreciative and be authentic. Newsletters, in person, staff meetings, written notes, on social media. Tie it to something you witnessed. #LeadLap
#leadlap A4 Know your staff. Ask about their family, vacations, etc. Shows we care about the whole person. Sure helps me have a big picture of each person in the building.
A4: Have also given golden tickets and I trade places, staff gets to have a break or work on something or read in my office and I spend time in their classroom #LeadLAP
A4: My favorite free form of appreciation is taking time to just talk face to face. As busy as life gets, these moments are the ones I treasure the most! #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A4. Maybe not free but I decided this year to bake on at least every other Sunday and bring in on Monday to show my appreciation. Everybody who knows me knows I love food and if I share then it is a big deal.
Also. I ask my staff to share “good gossip” with me as an admin. When I see a staff member, I tell them “rumor is you (insert positive recognition). Nice work.” The look on the Ts faces that somehow I knew as an upper level admin that they did something cool was big #Leadlap
A4: Did monthly drawings for a free planning day where I took a T's class if they put their name on the Pineapple Chart. Not free but cheap... Popcorn & Redbox Rental code each week for Ts who tried the Strategy of the Week & sent me pictures. #leadlap
A4: @padlet is one of the most successful ways I’ve seen for sharing and showing appreciation within different teams/groups etc. We’re all so busy, sometimes the staff room visit is fleeting, Padlet is such an easy way for staff to collaborate and support each other! #LeadLAP
A3. My amazing twitter family send the nicest tweets, @TaraMartinEDU sent me an autographed book w/a sweet note & shirt, & my kids have sent me so many letters this summer☀️. Getting together next month before school starts & so excited 2 👀 them! #BlessedandGrateful#LeadLAP
A4: we have a “you are a gift to our school family because ... “ sheet that we can fill out for one another; a win win bc they’re reflective to write and fun to receive! #appreciation#gratitude#leadlap
A4: Simple....praise your runners! In person in hallway and staff meetings, via email, on Social Media (school pages), small candy tokens, hugs, and fist bumps! So much good stuff happening on our campuses...constant praise becomes contagious! #LeadLAP
Also. I ask my staff to share “good gossip” with me as an admin. When I see a staff member, I tell them “rumor is you (insert positive recognition). Nice work.” The look on the Ts faces that somehow I knew as an upper level admin that they did something cool was big #Leadlap
A4 I visit classes and affirm teachers in front of students. Then I open it up for students to share why they appreciate their teacher. This has been so awesome to hear what students have to say and see how great it makes my awesome teachers feel. #LeadLAP
A4: It's been mentioned, but I've also learned that not everyone loves public appreciation. We've got to be careful that our good intentions don't go wrong. #LeadLAP
A4 A message that shows someone he or she matters is huge but there is nothing like kind words that are handwritten - they seem to last a lifetime. #LeadLAP
A4: The gift of time is so powerful. Be visible & available. People feel appreciated when they know you care, believe in them & will be there for them. #LeadLAP
Q4 - I think all genuine appreciation is free. Gifts are nice, but words - whether they are written or spoken - mean the most. The best leaders master this! #LeadLAP
A4. Text messages. DMs on Twitter (or RT’s with comments). Super short emails. Timely, specific, and authentic. People like to know that they matter. #leadlap
A4: Different people need different things. Knowing the people you work with is a must. Things like I saw that ..., Good Morning, How are you doing works wonders. #leadlap
When we see the S who scored the winning basket, we know how to appreciate them. The S may not have known we were at the game. We don’t recognize the T who navigated a challenging conflict in the same way. #Leadlap
Yes! The Five Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace is a great read - and a reminder that *our* appreciation language isn't necessarily everyone else's. #LeadLAP
A4b: As a principal, another free way to show appreciation is to take action on teacher suggestions. It is one thing to be a listener, but another to be a doer. They are doing the work—show them their voice makes a difference. #leadlap
Simple yet so powerful. When we make others aware of why we appreciate what they said or did, they are more likely to keep doing that for others. #LeadLAP
A4. Anything that comes from the ❤️: 😊, 🤛🏻👊🏻💥, 🤗, shoutouts 📣, letters, f2f compliments of appreciation- It’s the little things that make such a HUGE difference 💗#LeadLAP
#leadlap A4 Say to teacher...you are so skilled at —-. Would you please share at PLC? They may or may not want to do, but at least know you have noticed.
Workplace social skills show appreciation to coworkers. Such as:
1. Being helpful
2. Being friendly
3. Following through on promises
4. Avoiding clicks
5. No gossip
6. Forgiving quickly
7. Not making mountains out of molehills
#LeadLAP
A4 #leadLAP funny you should ask @mmiller7571 !!! We have aFB group for admin that offers JUST THIS KINDA STUFF! https://t.co/dEcidjYg6O
We have exciting news to share about this group SOON as well!! :)
A5: Pinterest is my number one go-to place. There are so many creative minds out there and I’m so grateful they are willing to share their ideas! #LeadLAP
A5: Well right now...all of my ideas are coming from YOU! Wow! Honestly I find motivation in my heart. I love to be motivated so I know others love it too. I love to find small but effective ways to show appreciation. Sometimes these lead to BIGGER ideas! #leadLAP
A5: Definitely Twitter chats. Also an avid reader and I make sure to take notes and write them in the back of all my books. Makes referencing easy. #LeadLap
A4: (plan for this year) Each teacher will have a QR code outside their classroom linked to their own @Flipgrid. As visitors come and go they can leave a quick video of praise! #LeadLAP
A5: I think about things that I would appreciate, I listen to others when they share what they would appreciate, I ask others for opinions & definitely reach out to my PLN for suggestions #LeadLAP
A4: send teachers a Marco Polo video message after being in classroom to affirm something teacher did. Even better if you can grab a student to join you on the video sharing something special about their teacher. #leadlap
#LeadLAP A5. Most of the time I find motivation through great chats such as this one and #Kidsdeserveit as well as #tlap. Also through books like Culturize.
A4b: As a principal, another free way to show appreciation is to take action on teacher suggestions. It is one thing to be a listener, but another to be a doer. They are doing the work—show them their voice makes a difference. #leadlap
A2: ask about the things that matter to them the most: family, hobbies, travel. Let them know you liked their ideas! Build those relationships! #leadlap
A5: 1) Twitter & this incredible #LeadLAP crew! 2) Listening to the staff I work with. Listening to their ideas and their needs and wants sparks some of the best things we do at our school!
A5: My folks, family, & faith have taught since I was a wee babe how to give thanks & appreciation to others, still do! As of April 2018 I have found so many great ideas from my PLN peers here in the Twitter-sphere! #LeadLAP
#leadlap A4 @AmyGonzales622 started a tradition of a gift of time. Our admin team leads an SEL lesson for an entire grade level & the teachers get an additional prep. As admin we love that we get to provide explicit SEL instruction and model what we value.
A4 I think simply letting people know you sincerely appreciate them and all that they do. This can be done by just leaving a sticky note message on their desk, or telling them face to face so they can see the sincerity in yours. Means a lot when your work is noticed. 😁 #leadLAP
A5 - Social Media is a great place to find ideas! Many positive initiatives go viral - post it notes in cars or lockers, handwritten notes on desks on test days. Steal those ideas and bring them to your school!! #LeadLAP
Yes! How can I forget @dbc_inc! Ever since #tlap, the words and ideas and thoughts from these books has helped shaped me as an educator, and person! #leadlap
A5: Students motivate me. 🙌🏼🎉I will ask Ss in the halls: what’s been the highlight of your day so far? The answer usually always mentions a specific teacher. I’ll go tell that T! Or sometimes I stop the student to make a video to show their T 😜😎#leadLAP
A5: Here! Building a PLN on Twitter and Facebook has been life-changing! I'm so eternally grateful for the leadership of those who share their work and ideas. Know that this "extra" work you do matters! #LeadLAP
Q5: I glean ideas from other educators mostly. I enjoy collaborating. I also read blogs, books, articles and follow all sorts of people on social media. Books on leadership usually have ideas for showing appreciation #LEADLAP
A5: My PLN...y’all rock with innovation! @principalsteph1 has amazing stuff too! #moralemagic of course Pinterest has tons too...but it can get overwhelming! #LeadLAP
I find nuggets on Twitter, but I also harvest a lot of my own ideas. Beverage buggy is a big hit; so is trail mix bar. Little treats in T mailboxes are fun to create and make. Everything you see is a potential token of appreciation in one way or another with imagination. #leadlap
Awesome Craig! Thanks for taking part. I "value new ideas" by listening to great leaders like yourself and then attempting to move the needle in a similiar fashion in my school. #1Step2Start#leadlap#MSAAchat
Hey All! Been a long time... LOL! Inspire Others: I try to uplift those whom inspire me by sharing the great work they are doing with others within my network. It's important we pay homage to those who are inspiring to us. #MSAAchat#LEADLAP#1Step2Start
Here's a challenge I hope everyone takes. Please RT!
Pick 1 of the phrases & explain how you are successful, working to improve, or modeling in that area.
Let's all help each other reflect & improve. #MSAAchat#bfc530#LeadLAP#PrinLeaderChat#satchat Use #1Step2Start w/reply.
A5- I find motivation by learning from others by hearing their stories and listening to them. Also - just visiting with students gives me motivation to Keep trying to build a culture focused on kids. #LeadLAP
A5 a lot of them I find on twitter and others come from collegues but a lot come from the things I learned watching how my parents and grandparents treated those around them #leadlap
This book is an AMAZING beginning for the future of @dbc_inc children's books! I'm looking forward to many more! The bar has been set, y'all... and it's been set really high! #LeadLAP#tlap#DolphinsInTrees
In reply to
@burgessdave, @aaronpolansky, @dbc_inc, @dbc_inc
A5 totally get ideas from twitter and definitely from reading #LeadLAP but what motivates me to even look for ways to show appreciation is immersing myself in what’s happening around me-People doing good motivates me like crazy to share how awesome they are.
Whoa, this is awesome, thank you! #ObserveMe could easily be integrated with this so staff could get specific feedback💃🏻 Needless to say, this is a perfect example of why Twitter is my go to source for motivation! #Leadlap
A5: I also find motivation in building relationships and knowing what each teacher values. Then I try to show appreciation around what they value! #LeadLAP
A6- I try to recognize T's for going above or when they take a risk... a note, jeans pass, favorite treat. I'm intentional about recognizing indiv. success as well as the group #LeadLAP
A6: I build it into my staff meetings. That is the first item on the agenda every time. Make sure to shout out the greatness and the kindness you see #LeadLAP
A6 I try to make sure that I pay a compliment to the people around me each day and in each conversation saying thank you doesn’t take anything extra either does a good job #leadlap
I hope to also have a second QR linked to a google form or @Flipgrid created by the Teacher with questions for specific feedback on their personal goals for the year. #LEADlap
A6, #LeadLAP I literally keep a list to track who I do what for. I got a comment once that made it seem false...BUT..I keep track of who I send christmad cards too. you TRACK what is important and what matters most!
A6: This... a whole lot of this... any chance I get... any time I see someone doing something amazing for kids, I will make the effort to share my appreciation, both to the face and "behind their back". Positive gossip is the best gossip! #LeadLAP
A6: Be intentional and specific. Let others know why you appreciate them, and give them specific examples. Be consistent in showing appreciation. #leadlap
A6: practice. The next time you go to the store; cashiers, servers, etc all wear name tags. Why not recognize humanity and tell them thank you by name? Or make your request and INCLUDE their name? #LeadLAP
A6: I build it into my staff meetings. That is the first item on the agenda every time. Make sure to shout out the greatness and the kindness you see #LeadLAP
A6: For the past 2 years, I used a staff roster to intentionally show appreciation. Each week, I randomly select 2-3 names. During the week, I find time to talk with them, provide support, and/or express gratitude. Going to try again this year!
#LeadLAP#JRErocks
A6: A handwritten note is intentional. I do it for every staff at once. It is a way for me to think of everyone’s strengths. If I do it sporadically, I feel I give to same people all the time. #leadlap
Q6: #Leadlap In my class I have a roster print out and I put a Star by students that I have given kudos too and Circle the Star when I make a positive call home. I try to complete both in the first six weeks.
Really pays off- I bet you could do similar with staff.
FA: if you want to be really intentional add calendar appointments to every week, this will keep you focused on showing appreciation and allow you to ensure you get everyone on campus. You cannot afford to leave someone out #LeadLap
A6: this yr I’m going to have staff fill out a Google form w/ their Language of Appreciation and make a monthly checklist to be sure everyone is appreciated in the way that means the most to them. #LeadLAP
A6: Bringing new leaders on board, I need to get to know them & how they feel appreciated. Then, be intentional & relentless about ensuring ALL of our team members know their genius & how much I value them & their gifts. #LeadLAP
A6: I try to write 2-3 thank you notes per week. There’s always someone who has done something awesome for our kids, and I try to recognize that. You’d be surprised how many of them you’ll see in peoples’ workspaces. #LeadLAP
A6: BE INTENTIONAL. It’s what makes your positive culture thrive. Put appreciation days on your calendar & plan ahead of time to recognize greatness. There are also those spur of the moment days that you can be responsive to & it isn’t as overwhelming. #LeadLAP#rjllearns
A6: Make it genuine, you shouldn’t be crossing names off of a list so you can say you “showed” appreciation to all. How did that person make an impact in your or someone else’s life? How are you going to let them know? Showing appreciation should me meaningful #LeadLAP
A6: Here is a SIMPLE but POWERFUL way...make an effort to say "Hello" and/or "Good Morning" to every adult and student on your campus. Think about how powerful it will be when every person is and feels recognized. #leadlap
A6: I set goal to send (at least) one hand written thank you note to someone each day. It’s set as a task on my calendar and I’ve asked our secretary to be my accountability partner and check on my progress by her lunch. If I haven’t written it, it’s time to refocus. #LeadLAP
A6 - Every conversation is a chance to say thank you! Students - thanks for always being ready to learn. Staff - thanks for your commitment to our students. Parents - thanks for encouraging your child to succeed. Board - thanks for your time to help lead our school. #LeadLAP
Ask at the beginning of the year as part of a form. T shirt size, fav coffee, fav snack, someone they look to for encouragement, those kinds of things #LEADLAP
In reply to
@PrincipalPaulaJ, @BethHouf, @8Amber8, @mmiller7571
A6: Do it right away instead of waiting for a holiday or a special occasion. It takes 2 minutes to show someone that you appreciate them. Stop putting it off. #leadlap
A6: This year I will be more intentional and deliberate by tracking whom I give appreciation and shout outs to. EVERYONE does awesome things! Obtain input from others as we can’t be everywhere at once. #LeadLap
A6 Making sure I let at least one person know I appreciate what they did each day. And I like @JayBilly2 notebook idea. Going to think about that one for sure! #Leadlap
A6: I'm a little late amazing #LeadLAP but I want to jump in-You can be intentional about showing #gratitude w/your daily routine. My 1st email EVERYDAY is a #gratitude email-it makes all the difference in my day
A2 As a parent, I sat in on a teachers class and was so impressed I told our superintendent about him who in turn presented him with an award in front of his class. A win for everyone!#LEADLAP
A6: Sharing out the awesome in our classrooms via social media is something that I do intentionally each day. I don't wait until I get home, it's right there, right then. #LeadLAP
A6: It sounds silly but calendaring appreciation helps. Things get so busy that it is easy to forget. As part of our SEL lessons last year, I built in employee appreciation days to involve Ss and Ts in recognizing each other. It was very successful. #LeadLAP
A6: I did a survey that had all of the info about the Ts. Send notes to families made sure to have the snacks that the T's like for some of the meetings. If they like diet coke instead of diet pepsi, then we tried, etc. They like almond joy instead of milky way, we tried #LeadLAP
A6 I think for anything to be intentional, even if we want to do it with all of our heart, we need to make the time for it and make a fierce unbreakable commitment to it. #LeadLAP
A6: I love (and will continue) the personal authentic appreciation opportunities, but this year, I'm scheduling some appreciation "events" for whole staff. They are on the calendar so I don't miss them as the year's craziness takes over. #LeadLAP
A6: First thing each day, find 10 people to smile at and say Good Morning. That interaction will outweigh the next 5 negative they might have. #setthetone#leadlap
Don't wait to express gratitude. Do it. ALL THE TIME. Live gratitude, breath it, love on it.
Thanks for leading a great chat on a deeply meaningful topic @8Amber8@mmiller7571 You both are marigolds! #LeadLAP
A6: I literally have a checklist on my phone and aim to at least get each staff member 1x a marking period. I also buy a pack of 100 note cards each August and make sure they are gone by the end of the year. #LeadLAP
Q6: I use a planner where I write goals for each week. Here I include a list that includes showing appreciation. I also answer emails quickly which shows that I’m paying attention to people’s needs. #LEADLAP
A6: Never give up the opportunity to say something great about your school, staff, and community. Every interaction matters bc it may be the one they talk about for years. #LeadLAP
A6: Here is a SIMPLE but POWERFUL way...make an effort to say "Hello" and/or "Good Morning" to every adult and student on your campus. Think about how powerful it will be when every person is and feels recognized. #leadlap
A6: Continue to cultivate our culture of gratitude. I switch it up to keep it fun but always make it easy & available. Ts are busy & I want to eliminate obstacles so I build in time (AM huddles, faculty mtgs) & bring the materials they need. We do it as a team. #LeadLAP
A6 As a parent, I find opportunities to acknowledge teachers who go above and beyond. I’ll post positive, creative things they’re doing in class or drop a personal note in their mailbox.#LEADLAP
A6: Sharing out the awesome in our classrooms via social media is something that I do intentionally each day. I don't wait until I get home, it's right there, right then. #LeadLAP
A6. I use @Wunderlist to keep a rolling list of checkboxes to help me track interactions with everyone on staff. Helps me make sure I’m touching base with each person at least once before refreshing the list and resetting the process all over again. #leadlap
Wow, #LeadLAP, what a fast hour!! Thank YOU for being here this am, and caring about caring for those we serve!! I hope you have a FABULOUS start to your school year!!!! Hugs, @mmiller7571 and thanks @BethHouf@burgess_shelley for the opportunity!
A6: Paying attention to the little things - noticing what people need, and doing my best to help them get it (e.g. room maintenance, tech support, ideas, materials, supplies). #LeadLAP
A4: A #gratitude jar-keep one on your desk or in the Ss room. My son & I have a #gratitude journal. Face to face-tell people what you appreciate about them-it's a bridge to #joy for both of you. #LeadLAP
Thank you @8Amber8 & @mmiller7571 for leading an awesome #LeadLAP chat! Lots of ideas that I'm going to start working on right now! (Which is fabulous because the next #DBC50Summer book is #startrightnow, followed by one you all know and LOVE 😍😍😍)
A6: I have to be more deliberate this year. Planning activities one a month, make connections with people daily, and being observant to find those who just need an extra lift. #LeadLap
#leadlap one year We had a sticker grid at each Ts door. Every visit or walkthrough, I put a sticker on the chart. Gave me a quick way to see what Ts I was spending time seeing. Need to do again!
My hairstylist does something like this on 3x5 cards. It's a lot of work for her, but it's always fun to get my hair cut and learn what she thinks is important about what I say. #Leadlap
A6: It is incorporated into my plans with my kids daily-Practice what I preach! My kids have even better ideas than I do;) Over summer I continue to be intentional by thinking of secretaries & custodians who are hard at work in the summer getting our building ready❤️ #LeadLAP
#leadlap A6 I do track who I write my daily notes of appreciation to. A meaningful note with exactly how they made my day or a student’s day. Other authentic acts of appreciation - hugs, high fives, phone calls, cookies aren’t tracked.
A6: Love this Q! (1. Be mindful. You appreciate more if you’re on the lookout for awesomeness. (2. Schedule consistent feedback. Then appreciation becomes a good habit :-) @mmiller7571#leadlap
A6: By adding appreciation days to my professional & personal calendars. Committing to make & keep appointments to say:
Thank You
Couldn't do this without you
You make this school a better place
#LeadLap
A6: #LeadLap from the idea of stores giving me bonus punch cards, I have given my staff "Jeans Day" punch cards. Unlike stores, they do not have to work their way to a jeans day bonus. They start with 10 and can use them anyday of their choosing Also give jeans day on birthdays
