Hi there! Welcome to the #RCSTechChat for tonight. While we're waiting to get started, please give your name, school, grade/position, and tell us what superpower you'd love to have and why. We're excited to get started!
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:01 PM EDT
I'm Kayla Weller, instructional technology coach at Whitworth-Buchanan Middle School, and the superpower I'd love to have is telekenesis, because I could get SO much more done around my house! #RCSTechChat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:02 PM EDT
Don't forget to tag your posts with #rcstechchat so they can be seen by the group. :)
  • RTICoachCooper May 15 @ 8:02 PM EDT
Hey all, I am Amanda Cooper, RTI coach at Whitworth Buchanan Middle school. The super power I would love to have is invisibility, that way I could have some peace and quiet without being interrupted. #rcstechchat
  • smithstrcs - Moderator May 15 @ 8:02 PM EDT
Hey! I'm Stephanie, Instruction Technology Coach at BCE/TFAA. I'd LOVE to be invisible so I can find out what really goes on! Mwahahahaha #rcstechchat
  • mylifeasatechie - Moderator May 15 @ 8:04 PM EDT
Clarissa Miles here! Techcoach and RWS/LPS. If I could have one superpower it would be reading minds! #rcstechchat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:05 PM EDT
Hey all, don't forget to answer in the A1, A2, etc. format, and make sure you use the #RCSTechChat hashtag. You have to answer all six questions and complete the Form at the end of the chat to receive credit. Also, make sure your Twitter is set to public.

Q1: What does an ideal classroom with student centered stations look like? #RCSTechChat
  • smithstrcs - Moderator May 15 @ 8:10 PM EDT
    Rockstars, really! #rcstechchat
  • RTICoachCooper May 15 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: Ideally students will be working productively in small groups on a variety of activities and the teacher will be rotating to different groups to facilitate learning. #rcstechchat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: An ideal SCS classroom has students rotating through different activities guiding their own learning. The teacher is either working with a small group, or facilitating. The teacher is not the sole "dispenser of knowledge." #RCSTechChat
  • LPSRister May 15 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Crystal Rister, LaVergne Primary, 1st grade. My super power would be a time turner like in Harry Potter! #rcstechchat
  • smithstrcs - Moderator May 15 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1 Room to spread out, students in groups getting along, intentional work, fun #rcstechchat
  • LPSRister May 15 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1: Every student working on activities on their own level. Teacher has a small group. I am lucky because I often have an EA to do a small group as well. #rcstechchat
  • mylifeasatechie - Moderator May 15 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1- I feel like it would students working "quietly" on different types of projects some using technology and some not. The teacher is working with a small group and students have choice in what they are learning. #rcstechchat
  • DrLeavyOHS May 15 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1: Organized, with clear, instructions, structured environment, high expectations, and strong classroom management #rcstechchat

Planning is one of the most daunting aspects of student centered stations. Where do you go for station resources? #rcstechchat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Anytime we can meet students where they are, on their level, it's HUGE! We have a better chance of reaching them and pushing them further. #rcstechchat

A2: I use good old Pinterest for a lot of my resources. And the best resource is often other teachers who have found success. Elementary teachers are great resources for SCS, even for middle and high school teachers. #RCSTechChat
  • RTICoachCooper May 15 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: Here is a website with some great resources for learning stations https://t.co/q4iCAz0pxc #rcstechchat
  • smithstrcs - Moderator May 15 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2 @TpTdotcom is a good resource, but you have to look carefully-some lessons aren't aligned well. I used a lot of @brainpop and @ReadWorks for my stations. #rcstechchat
  • LPSRister May 15 @ 8:19 PM EDT
I keep stations simple! Raz Kids is amazing. Love Teacher Your Monster To Read. I also use games we previously used at the teacher table. #rcstechchat
  • mylifeasatechie - Moderator May 15 @ 8:19 PM EDT
I usually go with a variety of resources a teacher already had. Sprinkle in tech with the use of @playposit & @nearpod @quizizz and @msonenote to organize it all! #rcstechchat

Q3: For classroom management purposes it is important for timing to be a priority and transitions to be smooth. What classroom management techniques can you implement to ensure students know what they are doing, where to go, and when to get there? #RCSTechChat
  • DrLeavyOHS May 15 @ 8:26 PM EDT
I have not used Teaching my Monster to Read. Would it be a good intervention resource for high school? #rcstechchat
  • tcarey98 May 15 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A2: Our Ts use @brainpop @playposit @khanacademy @PBSLrnMedia and countless items from Teachers Pay Teachers. Got to be mindful of standards alignment with user/peer created resources. #rcstechchat
  • RTICoachCooper May 15 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: The use of a timer is helpful when doing stations. Also, the teacher giving good instructions for transitions is imperative to helping students. It is a great idea to have a finish-up or make-up station available for students who may need more time. #rcstechchat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: Students should be clear on expectations. I go over the rotations before we start, and I use a timer for me and for them. I position myself at all times where I can see the entire room, and students are not allowed to move from station to station until time's up. #RCSTechChat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:27 PM EDT
I think it's geared more towards preschool and elementary kids. I think that there are some high schoolers on that level, but I think the software itself is too basic for them. #rcstechchat

  • LPSRister May 15 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3 I introduce 1 station at a time in August. We practice roations the first couple weeks with morning tubs on each table. I manage the daily flow with Dojo. It's nice to press a button and not have to interrupt my flow to correct a student! #rcstechchat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:27 PM EDT
    YAY! Welcome, Tim! #rcstechchat
  • mylifeasatechie - Moderator May 15 @ 8:28 PM EDT
I use music cues to get prompt them to move without me having to do anything. This takes a couple weeks of practice. I use @onenote to organize assignments and give the extended assignments to my early finishers. I have @classdojo up all times for discipline. #rcstechchat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Isn't technology a beautiful thing? If it can make our lives easier and our class run smoother, I'm all about it! #rcstechchat

Rubrics! students love having that infront of them. I have tried many other things but I keep coming back to a rubric. It has instructions, due dates, etc. It helps I set those expectations at the 1st assignment of the year #rcstechchat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Music cues are great! I use them as often as I can. You are right, though. The kids have to be taught, just like any procedure. #rcstechchat

A5 I absolutely detest grading papers, so everything I could assign online that would automatically be graded was a winner in my book! #rcstechchat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A5: Again, align with your learning goal. What do you want them to accomplish? That would be the main thing I graded. The rest of the work might just be a check for understanding. #RCSTechChat
  • RTICoachCooper May 15 @ 8:43 PM EDT

      • DrLeavyOHS May 15 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A4: Math Tic Tac Toe, Math O, Scavenge Hunts, Sprints, Math Libs, QR code scavenger hunts, etc #rcstechchat
  • mylifeasatechie - Moderator May 15 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A5- One of the best things I have done is make a page in their one notes and have them track their own grades. I taught them how to screen shot, and enter the grades into a chart. I did spot check them, but they were actually honest "most" of the time.#rcstechchat

Same, girl. Same. Anything that can save me from grading is A+ in my book! #rcstechchat

A5 I absolutely detest grading papers, so everything I could assign online that would automatically be graded was a winner in my book! #rcstechchat

Small group and 1:1 teacher feedback is one of the most important parts of station rotation. Despite all the tech and resources, Teachers are still the most impactful force on student learning! #rcstechchat

A 5: Most of my stations are practice, so I do not grade most of them. Many of my stations are self-checking or partner accountability. Raz Kids, Big Brainz, and iReady do collect data that I use! #rcstechchat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:45 PM EDT
I love the idea of multiple boards. It also encourages student choice. Great idea! #rcstechchat
    • DrLeavyOHS May 15 @ 8:43 PM EDT
Yes,and they also play by themselves. They have to get tic tac toe;so there are different boards in the room and they have to work them and get their answers checked. Its critical thinking & fun bc they are sure their answers are right #rcstechchat

A 5: it is hard to give an assessment whole group in 1st grade. I do most of my assessments in small group at my teacher table. #rcstechchat

    Always. #rcstechchat

A5: Assign a quick online assessment at the end of each station or this is when the teacher station is very important. I also have assigned an exit ticket (over all stations) to get a whole class assessment #rcstechchat

A5 an assignment thats shows mastery. My recent one was with agar streaking. They were able to do an online stimulator. They had to know the steps and perform them in the correct order. Completing it correct and showing me proof was their grade. They loved it. #RCSTechChat
  • wellertechcoach May 15 @ 8:48 PM EDT
That's a good application of what they are learning, too. #rcstechchat

In math, I believe its needed to keep the students engaged. They need hands on understanding on the material. We have a different generation of students. #rcstechchat
