Content is extremely important, however working in a Title One school life skills are trumping content at times
Inspiring out students to be knowledge seekers is the most important gift we could ever give them
A greater emphasis can be placed on how to learn but that learning still must involve some content.
Join now. Topic: Should content remain king in teaching kids, or should there be a shift to teach how to learn not what to learn?
I think there should be a shift on how to learn. Such as project based learning.
I'm glad you mentioned Title I. Do you think our Ss need more instruction in HOW?
What are you referring to in Ss?
Teach students how to learn. Give students voice and choice on what to learn.
The bigger issue to me is that the shift has not occurred already. The world is not static, thus the focus of school should not be
Content is of importance. However, if we do not reach Ss how to learn, content knowledge will be limited. https://t.co/kjKVBFU91f
Now Topic: Should content remain king in teaching kids, or should there be a shift to teach how to learn not what to learn?
Agreed. My textbooks are still from the 90s
Using content to create content is a great way to balance. That would mean working on relevant creation skills.
In progress Topic: Should content remain king in teaching kids, or should there be a shift to teach how to learn not what to learn?
Agreed. How do Ts advocate for PBL and connect to the how in learning?
Content has its place. Cultural literacy is a necessary function of schools - it should just not be the primary purpose
Student positive psychological resources fundamental for engaged learning => Environment counts!! https://t.co/g3LTGF1pLx
Students - learned Twitter abbreviations for short word limit 101
We're living in an ever changing world. It's important to teach Ss HOW to learn to prepare for their future. https://t.co/qDat8QZcGY
Topic: Should content remain king in teaching kids, or should there be a shift to teach how to learn not what to learn?
Teaching students how to learn will increase their curiosity and problem solving
Thanks.. sorry 2nd Twitter chat. Students need consistency with life skills
I think it should be a mix all people learn differently. Students need to know how they learn best.
Love it. Shorthand used to be taught, now condemned as the fault of texting and the new generation
bringing technology into the classroom would be a great first step to encourage PBL!
A mantra I've found="The textbook is not the curriculum", if content is king, how can you ensure your practice is accessible?
During the next hour Plz refrain from using the hashtag as the actual chat takes place unless you are in the chat.
Agreed. BYOD or district provided?
Better hire - someone who can interact with people and problem solve or someone who knows dates of all WWII battles?
WHAT IS known about producing lifelong learners? How is that knowledge conveyed within the field of education?
Right on Scott... Who needs a king, anyway?
No worries! Do you implement life skills in your classroom? If so, which do you think need most emphasis?
Teaching students to know how they learn best. Teaching them what learning style fits them.
I believe there must be a balance between teaching Ss content and the skills required to learn the content.
makes so much sense... grow from there.
Having difficulty getting our district to accept BYOD..so frustrating! Any suggestions?
Responsibility and accepting fault. Constant conversation in classroom
Right on Samantha... we all learn differently but are part of a system that seems to ignore this fact. What to do?
Hmm,not wanting to offend, but is the topic of this week's a rhetorical question? What is the argument4the otherside?
That's frustrating. Clear guidelines and boundaries taught to students is important
let's hope so... has that been your experience?
Topic: Should content remain king in teaching kids, or should there be a shift to teach how to learn not what to learn?
If we are striving for kids to be lifelong learners teaching HOW to learn is key. They'll determine WHAT to learn to meet their needs.
WE ALL AGREE THAT EDUCATION IS about fostering lifelong learning, yet field of educ can’t seem to agree how best to do so. Why not?
work with Learning styles, help then understand it. Teach content to each learning style mold it for success.
Agreed Ss learn constantly. Provide opportunities for them to discover how they learn best
... hmmm, no offense taken. Limits of 140 characters. Trying to evoke chatter about content for learning to learn.
Why teaching grit and growth mindset is not enough. How do schools deal with what's outside the core? https://t.co/pxNhYdB5Dc
Fascinating read about trauma and compelling reasons to consider the whole child as we partner with the community https://t.co/OmjAgINBp9
Definitely! Ownership is vital. I also wonder if Ts can teach effective engagement. What does it look like to...1/2
It should depend on the schools needs and budget.
Agreed. I would add SEL seamlessly woven into the day as well. https://t.co/Lfh2JkkKGb
Content has its place. Cultural literacy is a necessary function of schools - it should just not be the primary purpose
Content is important but when students are younger it's more beneficial to teach them how to learn
well said...and heartfelt ->
this is how we could inclusion to be successful if we understood learning styles of each student in the class.
be engaged? How can we find our own engagement w/ learning? 2/2
Interesting stats. The stories behind the numbers beg/need us to scrutinize more intentionally. https://t.co/JBk5nEGPP2
Effective engagement in what regards to students? Engagement is very important in content..
If they know how to learn it helps build resilience
I like the shift, but not entirely at content's expense. Those on the front lines: How can we keep both? https://t.co/kfWRrLy587
In progress Topic: Should content remain king in teaching kids, or should there be a shift to teach how to learn not what to learn?
Change today is too rapid for us to assume that we know what content kids will need to know. Their world will be in the future.
anyone have expense with student-paced mastery learning? In which students learn to assess their own understanding?
yes learning is a passion because someone taught me how to learn.
If CONTENT is king, then the curriculum becomes what disables students.
As Ts we should always show life long learning as an important skill
In the early days of the war, “Ballad of the Green Berets” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966 https://t.co/eiM75qfxBN
Learning HOW to learn involves learning WHAT to learn.
ok, perhaps less shift and more tilt?
Curiosity fuels authentic learning. It's what truly makes learning meaningful for Ss. https://t.co/ZOHGdhgQdO

New activity? Anticipate issues & prepare. You & your kids will find greater success being proactive v. reactive.
I still see too many folks who believe their content is the most important part of learning.
we're doing away with large portions of final exams as well.
Doesn't it seem like parents are the driving force of content?
Real learning comes from exploration.
I think it is hard for some teachers bc they didn't learn this way and lack of ad
RELEVANCY is an essential component of content and learning…
I definitely agree. Kids always ask "Why are we learning this?"
Lifelong learners are connected & engaged to learning. It's learning that can be applied to real life. https://t.co/vFjctHPx96
WHAT IS known about producing lifelong learners? How is that knowledge conveyed within the field of education?
I feel like we win at state am I wrong??
incorp tech can help Ss develop important skills that wouldn't be taught in a traditional setting
interesting. In what way?
agreed! While teaching students HOW to learn we are simultaneously delivering the content.
Our brains use different learning modes and chunk information…how do you factor this into your instruction?
Ss want to know the why behind the learning.
Does follow a Q1,2,3 etc? It would help filter out the noise if we did.
Conferences consist of "When will they learn multiplication, fractions, space etc"
Agree, if students don't have an ability to learn for themselves then they are at a disadvantage after school
Lifelong learners also value choice. Especially important when engaging Ss in ELA. https://t.co/vFjctHPx96
WHAT IS known about producing lifelong learners? How is that knowledge conveyed within the field of education?
and if we aren't doing that, then what is the purpose we are realizing?
Is there a Q1 coming, or can I suggest one for our topic?
Which will enable them to make greater levels of progress
so parents need to be brought into the changes that have happened. I'd love to learn more from my kids' schools.
sorry... has been around since the beginning... uses straight up chat format.
Educating the parents is key to any shift!
Agreed.. Also could depend on schools..
It is tough to teach swimming in a gymnasium, you need a Pool.
yes they do... and when they don't know why behind the learning... their interest tapers off...
Agreed. You can't learn HOW to learn without a direction of WHAT you are aiming to learn.
Great point!!! SEL is vital for everyone! https://t.co/tLoys1w4At
I see SEL in the skills-based area - learning how to self-regulate, etc. is vital for EVERYONE
Teaching reading, writing, speaking & listening? Try (free library of standards-driven lessons too) https://t.co/MChnRIyeI4
How should we integrate education for parents on the shift?
communication between schools and parents have always been a challenge
Agreed.. especially with blended families
the world and technology is changing fast. Schools can't always keep up. Jobs are changing daily. Teach about change.
Students deserve to know what they are expected to learn something (and because i said so is not a good answer).
And why. https://t.co/YA1ZMDJVuk
Agreed. You can't learn HOW to learn without a direction of WHAT you are aiming to learn.
yes it does... so what's the opposite of real learning? Fake learning? No Learning?
I agree.. Math is the one subject many students divorce from real life
well said. Lots of teachers are not wanting to change its worked for them for 20 yrs. Why change it.
Be a facilitator.Encourage Ss to lead their learning. More S facilitated convos & discoveries. Less T talk. https://t.co/uIv880igfe

compliance based learning
mobile apps to help connect schools and parents have been helpful
Help me. Is learning about changing behavior or is it changing the meaning of experience? What do you think?
Helpful! It shouldn't be either/or. This mirrors real life, where we have to learn on the fly. https://t.co/ko3XsfAWBb
agreed! While teaching students HOW to learn we are simultaneously delivering the content.
yes making the real world connections is beneficial even to the youngest of students.
by playing devil's advocate and "looking for the other viewpoint". good stuff
Indeed...Relevancy is an important component to life! https://t.co/2hGApSGelx
RELEVANCY is an essential component of content and learning…
Download Hoopla. Take your county library with you. Digital print and audio with the touch of a button. https://t.co/V8S5xvT3DX
I've been looking into Embr and it seems effective
I'll have to check that out.. Never heard of it
RELEVENCY is the key to engagement and creating purposeful motivated learners
Experience. When you ask adults about school they think back to learning experience as a child not behavior
Peter, Paul and Mary’s cover of “Blowin’ in the Wind” topped the Billboard charts, reaching #2 in 1963 - an anthem for peace
More of a ? but . . . doesn't a goal help in reflection: noticing growth, evidence of learning. Thoughts?
Please do! Would love to know your thoughts
Learning/teaching is NOT one size fits all. Provide Ss choice. Talk w/ Ss, they know how they learn best. https://t.co/db5wGvG79P

No doubt. Modeling enthusiasm is key!
Never tell students they can't write on their test booklet. Marking up the exam is an extension of a thinking process.
Robyn, a keen insight. Thanks for sharing...
makes so much sense...why so difficult to do?
Providing opportunities for parents to become learners in the classroom along with their children.
It is the content that disables the students. When we embed barriers to learning into our methods
I notice the shift in responsibility from T(eacher) to S(tudent)!...and wonder about the role of the Parent. https://t.co/dCJYuAzxOT

Mixed grade groupings is hard because we have a 'synchronized swimming' approach to learning
Yes. Including parents in the conversation is best for our students and schools
All we are is the stories we tell ourselves. The content doesn't matter, the self/process/experience is at the core of learning
They may be born w/curiosity, but learning especially w/tools of collab & communication nd to be taught.
Perhaps students should be figuring out the why. They know best what growth and knowledge means (or doesn't) for them.
Parent partnerships-Vital. Been blessed to work w/ families that assist their child w/ taking ownership. https://t.co/sEeySAR3X0

Yes yes. Group people who are similar together. It doesn't work. Everyone I work with & group with are not the same as me.
The 1st time you hear a speech/presentation should not be the day it is delivered in class. Use PhotoBooth & hear them practice.
Include parents. Parents need to be educated on how to support their child in this changing environment.
... so what about swim or sink?
Classroom Twitter accounts are phenomenal to connect w/ parents & the community. https://t.co/jYhBw9I1Y3
so parents need to be brought into the changes that have happened. I'd love to learn more from my kids' schools.
What about community and connections? Hurt people will hurt people. St who struggle may saboutage
I think that should include schools effectively communicating with parents
I believe collaborative projects are essentail in today's digital society.
Small part of why edu. is slow to change is because of perception OLD WAY worked for the community - including parents. Must address
that's wonderful. I want to ask what I can do as a parent. If my kid is already doing well, they're sometimes at a loss.
Curriculum nights, classroom Twitter accounts. Perhaps even a parent Twitter chat. https://t.co/1nPq5a5RaC
How should we integrate education for parents on the shift?
YES!!! (Did I say that out loud?) Or some other platform. Everyone can learn. I think it should be required. https://t.co/qIUxDndZnC

I agree. Ss should set the destination and reason for learning; Ts should help them navigate the path.
Great ideas! Love parent twitter chat!
What if we replicate kids learning to walk and talk?
Yes, and more than navigate. Support, encourage, engage, challenge,
Anyone use iLobby as visitor management software in a school setting?
Stay connected. Volunteer, be a classroom "Expert", or part of an authentic audience when Ss present. https://t.co/j0TnYZdmzp
that's wonderful. I want to ask what I can do as a parent. If my kid is already doing well, they're sometimes at a loss.
curious what you use. Should have an info night where everyone signs up and practices.
I think Ss benefit from having both the social skills as well as the tech knowledge.
Before we reach the end of our first for today I need to thank for moderating & everyone else who participated.
Hate to do this but I am out , life awaits.
Thank you! Only my 2nd chat ever! Loved the sharing of ideas.
thanks! What's an example of where I might be part of an authentic audience?
Previously mentioned how I was looking into . Thoughts?
We literally are preparing Ss for jobs that do not currently exist. Important to think about! https://t.co/eAhrZW50nk

This is teaching about the nonverbal cue of growling.
Yes, it's our goal to create resourceful, strategic, goal directed, purposeful learners

I'm on board 1,000%. But in my case I (a parent) would have to start it! Dearth of Twitter around here.
Does it have to be one or the other??? https://t.co/ogvjeduEho
Help me. Is learning about changing behavior or is it changing the meaning of experience? What do you think?
I'm saying kids are born "able to learn". Why do we have to teach them "how to learn"?
