  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:02 PM EDT
Lori, Director of Curriculum & Technology, I am in the beginning stages of designing an Instructional Rounds protocol for our district #PPL1chat
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:03 PM EDT
Excited to collaborate with all of you! Allie Rodman - Professional Learning Consultant and School Board Member from NJ. This fall I am designing professional learning experiences for teachers and leaders. #PPL1chat

Are you ready? Q1 is coming up in one minute! #PPL1chat
  • JCrossedu Oct 1 @ 8:04 PM EDT
Jill, Dean of Curr & Instruction, from TX. This year I am starting PD Bingo with our faculty! Rolling it out tomorrow. #ppl1chat
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:06 PM EDT
Welcome, Jill! Thanks for joining us tonight. So proud of all the curriculum refinement @TMIEpiscopal is engaged in right now. #PPL1chat

A1: I spent a lot of time this summer looking for opportunities to reimagine PD within our current schedule and structures so I can meet all our Ts individual needs. #PPL1chat
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1: I exhibit design-inspired leadership by taking on the role of "experience architect." Most of my work involves designing personalized professional learning experiences for teachers and leaders. #PPL1chat
  • JCrossedu Oct 1 @ 8:09 PM EDT
Thanks for getting us on track with that! We are so grateful! #PPL1chat
    In reply to @thelearningloop, @TMIEpiscopal
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:09 PM EDT
Love how you're using PD Bingo to support that there is more than one way to access (and act upon) new knowledge. #PPL1chat

  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1. Establishing PLCs as part of our daily routine required me to embrace the opportunity while building on the 'WHY' #PPL1chat
  • JCrossedu Oct 1 @ 8:10 PM EDT
I also made sure to include some not so typical PD like Ted talks, blogging, and collaborating. Excited to see how it is received tomorrow #PPL1chat
    In reply to @thelearningloop
  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Can you share more about the PD bingo? #PPL1chat
    In reply to @JCrossedu
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:11 PM EDT
The "why" is so important - learning is context is critical, especially for adult learners. #PPL1chat

  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:12 PM EDT
The "why" is so important - learning in context is critical, especially for adults. #PPL1chat
    In reply to @LoriStollar
  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:13 PM EDT
Dedicating 30 minutes a day to collaboration is not always popular when there are lessons to plan and papers to grade. But reminding Ts of the WHY helps keep it in perspective #PPL1chat
    In reply to @thelearningloop
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A2: When we plan PL, we often seek solutions rather than stir up problems. At times, the real answers are in the questions and not the answers. We need to listen more than prescribe. #PPL1chat
  • JCrossedu Oct 1 @ 8:15 PM EDT
I have a Bingo card with various PD activities: videotaping a lesson, redesigning an assessment, sharing with colleagues, presenting PD session for peers, blogging, cross disciplinary lessons. I have prizes for Ts that get Bingo: lunch, gift cards, duty coverage. #PPL1chat
    In reply to @LoriStollar
  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A2. If we only solve the problems that are obvious, we are not getting to the core of what the 'problem' may be. Being in clssrms frequently helps me see our ProfLrng needs #PPL1chat
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:17 PM EDT
The more time we can carve out for leaders to be working with kids instead of facilitating meetings with adults - the better learning experiences we create for all of us. #PPL1chat
    In reply to @LoriStollar
  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:19 PM EDT
I am hopeful a well-designed Instructional Rounds process will do just that! #PPL1chat
    In reply to @thelearningloop
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Would love to hear about the model you're using for this! #PPL1chat
    In reply to @LoriStollar
  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A3. By moving (and recognizing!) Prof Lrng does not only happen on in-service days. Creating opportunities to embed Prof Lrng in the day-to-day happenings of the school #PPL1chat
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A3: When stretching the status quo in PL, I would think about more ways to bend time and space. Are we meeting educators where they are when they are ready? #PPL1chat
  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Based on the Harvard model. Looking to add T voice to foster ownership! #PPL1chat
    In reply to @thelearningloop
  • JCrossedu Oct 1 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A3: I am definitely trying to challenge the status quo when it comes to when and how we do PD. It doesn't just happen on PD days, early release, etc. It frequently happens every day in the school building when our Ts design units or collaborate or try something new #PPL1chat
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:28 PM EDT
REAL professional learning is a state of continuous learning - not scheduled workshops. #PPL1chat
    In reply to @JCrossedu
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A4: We need to "break rules" in PL regarding educator trust. If we've got the right people in the right seats, they will be constant learners. Stop tracking hours and start tracking progress. #PPL1chat
  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A4. First, recognizing the difference between PL and 'professional compliance', which is too often what in-service days become. I do think PLCs and the idea of embedding PL can be one way to 'break' a rule. Our Ts receive Act 48 hours for PLC time #PPL1chat
  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:32 PM EDT
Larger question is how we help politicians realize the fallacy of tracking hours and Act 48 compliance. Second question is helping Ts see importance of growing their craft #PPL1chat
    In reply to @thelearningloop
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Compliance is tough - how do we move away from "meeting the hours" to "learning as professionals"? PLCs - when crafted well - are a good step in this direction. #PPL1chat
    In reply to @LoriStollar
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A5: "Products" of PL do not only include lesson plans. What are students creating? How is our growth as learners supporting theirs? #PPL1chat
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:36 PM EDT
One of the biggest challenges I see here is related to teacher evaluation. Nationally, 87% of our teachers are scored as proficient when our students do not come close to meeting this mark. As a result, many teachers do not recognize they actually need PL. #PPL1chat
    In reply to @LoriStollar
  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A5. We have discussed Ts/PLC teams, creating action research projects and sharing them with colleagues in something like a poster session. Perhaps we could 'fund' some of the projects. #PPL1chat
    In reply to @thelearningloop
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:41 PM EDT
Love the idea of "space" - meaningful professional learning is not just about producing but also processing. The best ideas sometimes just need a little more time to marinate and grow. #PPL1chat
    In reply to @TheFirstYearEDU, @LoriStollar
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A6: We need to amplify the work of teachers that's gets kids excited about learning. What classes don't they want to miss? What learning experiences do they always turn in on time - because they are fun and meaningful, not because they are afraid? #PPL1chat
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:47 PM EDT
We set it up as a competition - almost like a local Go Fund Me. All projects are vetted by the superintendent for curricular alignment and then go before an education fund committee who use a rubric to score potential projects. #PPL1chat
    In reply to @LoriStollar
  • JCrossedu Oct 1 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A7: Looking with fresh eyes. We need to do this often, to tweak, refine, and truly empower others. #PPL1chat
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A7: I would like to see leaders take a more problem-based approach to PL rather than a band-aid, one size fits all solution. What is needed, by whom, when, and in what format? We preach personalization for kids but adults get lost in the mix. #PPL1chat
  • TMus_Ed Oct 1 @ 8:51 PM EDT

Sometimes the same content, presented in a difference voice and format, can move the needle. With adult professional learning, the right matches produce movement. Substance matters... but so does style. #PPL1chat

  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:53 PM EDT
The best PL sessions we have offered are often by our Ts for our Ts. #ppl1chat

  • TMus_Ed Oct 1 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A4: You have to have some confidence to be a rule breaker. Is usually worth it bc there’s so much learning! Seek out people, do some searching for orgs of interest & actually reach out to people! #PPL1chat
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:54 PM EDT
Confidence is key. Have you done your homework? Are you believable? Why should I buy what you're selling? #PPL1chat
    In reply to @TMus_Ed
  • LoriStollar Oct 1 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A8. Explore the idea of funding projects of our Ts! #PPL1chat (and continue to build out our Rounds process! I am super stoked about the potential)
  • thelearningloop - Moderator Oct 1 @ 8:57 PM EDT
A8: I am thinking about how we can keep PL structured (i.e., set options, rounds, etc.) and still keep them personalized. #PPL1chat
