#PPL1chat connects educators together to engage in conversation and share resources related to personalized professional learning. The chat encourages educators to prioritize their own growth and occurs the first of each month from 8:00-9:00 pm ET.
Excited to collaborate with all of you! Allie Rodman - Professional Learning Consultant and School Board Member from NJ. This fall I am designing professional learning experiences for teachers and leaders. #PPL1chat
A1: I spent a lot of time this summer looking for opportunities to reimagine PD within our current schedule and structures so I can meet all our Ts individual needs. #PPL1chat
A1: I exhibit design-inspired leadership by taking on the role of "experience architect." Most of my work involves designing personalized professional learning experiences for teachers and leaders. #PPL1chat
Dedicating 30 minutes a day to collaboration is not always popular when there are lessons to plan and papers to grade. But reminding Ts of the WHY helps keep it in perspective #PPL1chat
A2: When we plan PL, we often seek solutions rather than stir up problems. At times, the real answers are in the questions and not the answers. We need to listen more than prescribe. #PPL1chat
I have a Bingo card with various PD activities: videotaping a lesson, redesigning an assessment, sharing with colleagues, presenting PD session for peers, blogging, cross disciplinary lessons. I have prizes for Ts that get Bingo: lunch, gift cards, duty coverage. #PPL1chat
A2. If we only solve the problems that are obvious, we are not getting to the core of what the 'problem' may be. Being in clssrms frequently helps me see our ProfLrng needs #PPL1chat
The more time we can carve out for leaders to be working with kids instead of facilitating meetings with adults - the better learning experiences we create for all of us. #PPL1chat
A3. By moving (and recognizing!) Prof Lrng does not only happen on in-service days. Creating opportunities to embed Prof Lrng in the day-to-day happenings of the school #PPL1chat
A3: When stretching the status quo in PL, I would think about more ways to bend time and space. Are we meeting educators where they are when they are ready? #PPL1chat
A3: I am definitely trying to challenge the status quo when it comes to when and how we do PD. It doesn't just happen on PD days, early release, etc. It frequently happens every day in the school building when our Ts design units or collaborate or try something new #PPL1chat
A4: We need to "break rules" in PL regarding educator trust. If we've got the right people in the right seats, they will be constant learners. Stop tracking hours and start tracking progress. #PPL1chat
A4. First, recognizing the difference between PL and 'professional compliance', which is too often what in-service days become. I do think PLCs and the idea of embedding PL can be one way to 'break' a rule. Our Ts receive Act 48 hours for PLC time #PPL1chat
Larger question is how we help politicians realize the fallacy of tracking hours and Act 48 compliance. Second question is helping Ts see importance of growing their craft #PPL1chat
Compliance is tough - how do we move away from "meeting the hours" to "learning as professionals"? PLCs - when crafted well - are a good step in this direction. #PPL1chat
One of the biggest challenges I see here is related to teacher evaluation. Nationally, 87% of our teachers are scored as proficient when our students do not come close to meeting this mark. As a result, many teachers do not recognize they actually need PL. #PPL1chat
A5. We have discussed Ts/PLC teams, creating action research projects and sharing them with colleagues in something like a poster session. Perhaps we could 'fund' some of the projects. #PPL1chat
Love the idea of "space" - meaningful professional learning is not just about producing but also processing. The best ideas sometimes just need a little more time to marinate and grow. #PPL1chat
A6: We need to amplify the work of teachers that's gets kids excited about learning. What classes don't they want to miss? What learning experiences do they always turn in on time - because they are fun and meaningful, not because they are afraid? #PPL1chat
We set it up as a competition - almost like a local Go Fund Me. All projects are vetted by the superintendent for curricular alignment and then go before an education fund committee who use a rubric to score potential projects. #PPL1chat
A7: I would like to see leaders take a more problem-based approach to PL rather than a band-aid, one size fits all solution. What is needed, by whom, when, and in what format? We preach personalization for kids but adults get lost in the mix. #PPL1chat
Sometimes the same content, presented in a difference voice and format, can move the needle. With adult professional learning, the right matches produce movement. Substance matters... but so does style. #PPL1chat
A4: You have to have some confidence to be a rule breaker. Is usually worth it bc there’s so much learning! Seek out people, do some searching for orgs of interest & actually reach out to people! #PPL1chat
