interested to hear what works on the ground. Been around a lot of schools & seen a lot of different approaches. What all successful approaches had in common though I think was a clear vision by mgt which was consistently applied across the board #edchatie

Aggression towards staff & students (verbal or otherwise)
PHONES
Delaying going to class / avoiding going to class & trying to hide in toilets...
#edchatie
OK. I have the luxury of a flexible timetable, but I'm a total pest for tardy students in the corridor. I will follow, and follow, and follow until they would prefer to be in class rather than have me repeating 'you need to be in class' on an infinite loop!
#edchatie
we use "hall pass" - each teacher has one to give out so anyone on the corridor at class times is meant to show their pass if queried by another teacher. Also no toilet breaks allowed 1st class after breaks so periods 1,4 & 7. #edchatie
We're at the halfway point of our #edchatie live discussion on "Strategies for managing challenging behaviour in schools" tonight.
Join and and share your strategies
#edchatie We use 3 clear instructions, Give 1st clear instruction to stop doing, tchr pause...then 2nd clear instruction is serious to tell student tostop doing.....tchr pause,,then 3rd instruction extremely serious..goes to class tchr...We raise hand to get silence& sts copy
In youthreach I found that increasing my tolerance for suboptimal behaviour went a long way towards geting an effective class for the students who wished to engage. For the others it was a waiting game #edchatie
It actually went quite smoothly. We increased the length of time for confiscation to a full week. Once the first phone was taken, they adhered to it quite quickly #edchatie
Eistear, Mayo, MFL teacher. The support of a robust whole-school behaviour system is vital. When the same strategies are applied across the school, students feel secure and behave better. An effective referral system is a needful part of this #edchatie
Our mobile phone policy is:
No phones during class time (only at breaks)
On 1st offence, phone goes to office, collect at end of day (use log-book there)
2nd - collect at end of next day
3rd - parent/guardian collects at end of next day
#edchatie
Also a āregulation stationā for children to be redirected and change their pattern of behaviour that is impacting on the classroom learning environment š#edchatie
Primary level here, we use the Incredible Years. Some wonderful positive behaviour strategies in there, including Happygrams which are lovely.
Its the foundation for the good behaviour and hopefully reduces the level of challenging behaviour, long term.

Parents were happy for the most part. Opposition really only came from parents after a phone had been taken. Office received some angry calls but after a term or so it all calmed down. Has worked very well since then #edchatie
I'd recommend reading any of Bill Rogers' behavioural management books. I read 'How to Manage Children's Challenging Behaviour' a few years ago. It helped with a particular child I had. #edchatie
Absolutely. My mantra is 'it's never just you'. Some students will challenge, and they will do that for a number of teachers. Very hard for new teachers in a school to fully accept that, and they feel bad about their own professionalism or place in the school. #edchatie
A significant nurture group principle we work with is āall behaviour is communicationā. With our nurturing approach within a nurture group intervention, we try to allow the pupils to discuss their behaviour patterns, triggers&become more self aware in creating change. #edchatie
Very similar to our old plan. We found that a lot of bullying (Snapchat!) was happening at breaks and between classes so opted for the full ban #edchatie
Students behave well when they know the rules, when they know that penalties will be rigourously implemented, when they feel they belong and & when they see that you have taken the time to learn their names. Be strict & be kind -it's a tricky balancing act #edchatie
I think this can be particularly difficult at primary level, because there is no change in classes. If you have a student or no. of students pushing the boundaries and causing disruption, you've got them full time.
#edchatie
A full ban is definitely something to consider.
I've recently had students genuinely unwell, phoning home to get collected. Bypassing the normal protocol of going through the year head & office. When they phone we miss things that are important.

We've been spending the last 45 miinutes of tonight's live #edchatie discussion chatting about "Strategies for managing challenging behaviour in schools".
Please keep sharing out links to useful sites and other examples of strategies you have.
With some groups it really helps if you can identify the natural leaders & build a positive relationship with them.
2 different tasks there. And sometimes that can be very hard to do.

On a self-care note:
Talk, folks. Find someone who you trust & who understands your situation. Don't let things get you down, because this profession can and will demand a lot of you.

Have been working on a new strategy with 2 colleagues. Aim is to reward positive behaviour. Basically, students will have 5 specific criteria to meet. They'll receive a stamp on their "loyalty card" if/when they do. 10 stamps = no homework #edchatie
That follows on when you know their names - it shows a level of individual interest and you will start, perhaps subconsciously, dealing with each child particularly, in the hope of bringing out the best in them #edchatie
We use a lot of strategies to pre-empt challenging behaviour. When we see someone starting to struggle, movement breaks, break cards, visual cues. We've just put in a new 'sensory trail' in the corridor olfor movement breaks to get some of the energy out, as needed.
#edchatie
We're into the famous five final minutes of tonight's #edchatie live discussion on "Strategies for managing challenging behaviour in schools"
Any last thoughts, ideas, solutions or links?
Transcript will be compiled tomorrow, so there's still time to add them
Delighted to see Ireland's first @researchED1 event will be with us in 12 months. It is sorely needed. Recent (and not so recent) research in education is sure to be to the fore, regardless of whether or not it is popular in wider education circles #edchatie@researchEDDub
We're actually revamping our code of behaviour currently which will include all of this. As of now, it's just as the SNAs and teachers see the need. We also timetable AGG support around key times e.g. SNA breaks, straight after break and lunch and other trigger times.
#edchatie
Thanks for the tip. Only in pilot stage with first years at the moment. The visual of the card and stamps seems to be motivating at the moment #edchatie
Implementation: I only started in Sept so we're still working through kinks. But I have an excellent staff and everyone is on the same page in terms of managing challenging behaviour which is key. We've set up a behaviour committee to assess and revamp our approaches.
