A1: Creating a learning environment where students can utilize their strengths, so they can access & retain content, produce high quality work of their design, and make learning visible to their audience. Students set the pace and direction. Students own their learning. #3rdchat
A1: My vision #FlexibleLearning is being able to connect to my students outside of the classroom. Example - Have them be able to learn a lesson through a video then review it or apply the next day in the classroom. #3rdchat
Q2: How are the roles of the students and teachers in a Flexible Learning Environment different from the roles they play in a Traditional Learning Environment? #3rdchat

A1: #flexiblelearning is teaching a student in the environment that is beat for their learning. Might be traditional but it might be something totally out of this world! #3rdchat
A2: Students draw the map & the teacher is the compass. Students set the pace & design for learning. Teachers assist, monitor, provide feedback & help students connect with peers & experts inside & outside of the classroom. Traditional=Teacher as map, compass & captain. #3rdchat
A1 flexible learning includes extending the classroom beyond the walls of my room. @Seesaw and @padlet have played a role in this for me. It also means giving some power away to students. #3rdchat

A3: I seek Ss' voices using Q&A chats on Google Hangouts. Thinking becomes visible to Ts & Ss. This process helps Ss to share how to access content, brainstorm how Ss will show their learning, & make connections w/peers as Ss work toward their goals. Classroom Thinktank #3rdchat
A3: Utilizing flexible seating has helped my students to take charge of where they learn best. We are still learning how to manage our learning places but it is a start! #3rdchat
A2 Flexible learning environment involves many different modes to build knowledge and ways of thinking. All are teachers and all are students. A traditional learning environment is many students but only one teacher. #3rdchat
A3: I try to provide different experiences: Google Docs, Google Slides, and presentations through FlipGrid. I introduce how to work alone, in pairs, and small groups. #3rdchat

A4: Flexible Learning goes beyond accountability & inspires Ss to own their learning. When Ss own their learning, they become experts. They develop strengths & competencies they can share with others. Ownership is powerful & promotes the culture our Ss need. #3rdchat
A3 1/? I try to empower my students by giving options within a framework. For Social Studies we learn about four different countries in grade 3. I have developed a pick a project menu. #3rdchat

2/? Within those four choices there is still some flexibility. One of the options is to give a presentation using some props this can be done in front of me or in front of the class. One of my students this year took it a step further and made a short video on the iPad #3rdchat
A4: When Ss figure out how they learn best, they start enjoying the learning process and start taking risks including indulging in productive struggle & learning from mistakes #3rdchat

3/3 The student actually plans to pause the video at certain points to explain more in person. He’s planning to do this in front of the whole class and I’m quite excited to see it unfold. I am not certain that I would’ve thought of that format on my own. #3rdchat
A5: Utilize Learning Management Systems like #GoogleClassroom & @Schoology to manage Ss' workflow. Ts can view Ss' progress & provide valuable, real-time feedback. Workflow management is important for facilitating Flexible Learning. #3rdchat
I have active conversations with my students about productive struggle and how it leads to their growth. So important to keep failing forward. Awesome! #3rdchat

A6: S can interact globally and connect with kids around the world. My students have loved learning through twitter and the global read aloud. #3rdchat
A6: Looking into a Math mentor program between HS and Elem. students. Use @padlet@flipgrid or shared Google Sildes to facilitate Math conversations. Groom HS students for teachership. Elem. Students get to make learning visible for a new audience. #3rdchat
This is an area I still wish to grow. My students are sharing Math problems on #gmttc3 (Global Math Task for 3rd grade). They love it. Tell me about global read aloud. #3rdchat

A5 When tech is used within a flexible learning model we can really dig deep on the SAMR scale. @sylviaduckworth as usual shows a concept in the best way. @seesaw helps me dive into learning with tech in meaningful ways. #3rdchat#morethanasubstitute
Have you tried an in-class flip. I do them during a station rotation. Students do the flipped activity, while I conference or hold small groups. Check out @Catlin_Tucker 's blog. Later, I will post her blog on the in-class flip if I can find it. #3rdchat#blinaction
A7: Many Ss struggle with tests and essays. That doesn't mean they can't think or learn. Make room for portfolios, conferencing, observing conversations, presentations, video responses. Assessment should bring out the best in Ss, not dread the worst. #3rdchat

My class read a book this year with a group of 3rd graders around the US. I have never better book talks with my students! It was amazing! We also did weekly twitter chats to discuss chapters!

A8: Teachers have shared that student self-pacing can be frustrating. Schedules, pacing and curricular demands can test your commitment to Flexible Learning. Hang in there. It takes time to find your rhythm and create a system that works for your classroom. #3rdchat
A6 Extending outside the walls of the classroom means recognizing that life isn’t filed in subject areas like school often is. It means finding those connections and/or getting students to find those connections. #3rdchat
Thank you for joining the discussion. Thank you to the #3rdchat moderators for letting me guest moderate this week. I love connecting with my #3rdchat peeps each week.
