Q1: Technology and Social Media have changed the way the world works! How has it changed your life? How is it used in our student’s lives? #caedchat@CAedchat
A1 - I recently joined twitter and found the amazing #physed community that constantly pushes me to improve my teaching. Tech is a HUGE part of our Ss lives and in think we miss a ln opportunity to engage them when we neglect to include tech in meaningful ways #caedchat
Q1: Technology and Social Media have changed the way the world works! How has it changed your life? How is it used in our student’s lives? #caedchat@CAedchat
A1: Personally I have become a better teacher to my staff and students because of Social Media! My PLN has grown, my mind has expanded, and the possibilities are endless with the support I am given on a daily basis. Our students NEED to see its true benefit #caedchat
Q1: Technology and Social Media have changed the way the world works! How has it changed your life? How is it used in our student’s lives? #caedchat@CAedchat
A1 I've gotten so much more PD through twitter in the last few years than all the other years put together. Ss today are definitely a different type of learner . #caedchat
A1: Tech and Social Media have changed my life and the way I teach because I have so many ways to connect to a PLN like this one. My students use daily, in and out of class as do I. #CAedchat
Q1: Technology and Social Media have changed the way the world works! How has it changed your life? How is it used in our student’s lives? #caedchat@CAedchat
A0: Mona Piñon, English TOSA, Oxnard Union High School District. I’m super excited to meet new teachers and help them implement our educational tech subscriptions. @noredink@VocabularyCom#caedchat
A1:Social media has changed the way I get information, created new ways to develop relationships with people I’ve never met, and provided a place to find my voice outside my own back yard. #caedchat
A1 It's like Halloween candy - Can be amazing, but too much can be bad, & some put bad in. I love that I've been able to keep in touch w/former Ss and/or their parents, to hear what they're doing. Also, I started using Twitter more last year. Incredible #PLN! #caedchat
A1: Expanded the network of people I can connect with and learn form; helped me see that no matter what I'm experiencing someone else has been there before and can help #caedchat
A1: social media has played a significant role in my professional networking. Lots of learning, and lots of impactful professional relationships that started via Twitter, some entirely sustained via social media.
#caedchat
A1: social media allows me to connect with old & new friends, feel support, ask for help & share positive things in my life hoping to inspire others. For our Ss it’s how they interact, explore, learn, meet others, might be pos or neg & they are influenced & pressures #caedchat
A1: It’s allowed me to stay connected to friends and family around the world. For my students, I think it has created a new way to connect to others with similar interests. #caedchat
A1. I personally use TW for PD & political affiliations. My team also is starting to use to communicate to parents but few use. IG for sharing with my large extended family. My Ss seems to use for gaming, entertainment & personal hobbies. #caedchat
A1: for my students, I have to admit I don’t know. My guess is that some just use it at most superficial level. Some prob. have particular interests/passions partly sustained by social media. Some using it inappropriately, some prob. hurt by it #caedchat
A1:Social media has exposed my students to both the best and the worst in humanity, it has created a space where it is easy to be mean spirited and a place where the mistakes of youth once forgotten live forever #caedchat
A1: for my students, I have to admit I don’t know. My guess is that some just use it at most superficial level. Some prob. have particular interests/passions partly sustained by social media. Some using it inappropriately, some prob. hurt by it #caedchat
You bring up some important points. I’ve had to have some pretty eye opening convos with my teenager about what she puts on social media. I wonder how many of our Ss think about the message their posts send about themselves. #caedchat
A1: It's changed my life in how it's allowed me to continually connect and learn from great educators. I argue it makes our kids more social and collaborative. Trick is to leverage their skills. #caedchat
Q1: Technology and Social Media have changed the way the world works! How has it changed your life? How is it used in our student’s lives? #caedchat@CAedchat
A2: Stigma formed by some of the negative things kids can do and have done with it. Too often, kids are using g devices and social media as a toy rather than a tool. #caedchat
A2 - I think the boundaries are still unclear. Technology has adapted more quickly than society has. We’re figuring it out as we go. Also, I didn’t have as much tech growing up, so it’s not second nature for me to use like it is for Ss. #caedchat
fear of misuse/inappropriate use on social media, one's digital footprint, cyberbullying, you name it, but we cannot ignore and think Ss got this, so help them! #CAedchat
A2: in the past I’ve been enthusiastic about helping students learn about social media, best practices, etc. but lately I’ve been feeling less sanguine. So much trash out there, so much hate and ignorance - you can’t completely avoid it. Must be factored in. #caedchat
A2: Real Talk - I think because we as educators are often digital immigrants or digital tourists (don’t mind visiting, but really not interested in learning the language or customs). #caedchat
A2 There is a risk & privacy issue that we have to respect on behalf of parents & admin. As a chapter president, I have seen a lot of negatives. Just as we had to educate when we went 1-1, the same will be about SM in classroom. #caedchat
A2: @maggieNYT put it best: “On Twitter, everything is shrunk down to the same size, making it harder to discern what is a big deal and what is not. Tone often overshadows the actual news. All outrages appear equal” https://t.co/d2mn0UVnhK#CAedchat
A2: I would say FEAR. We are afraid of what we might see on our students Social Media, or what might happen if we let them use it.I say we need to #DitchThatFear instead of pointing out negatives that could happen, point out breakthroughs/connections that can be made. #caedchat
I agree David, but if we leave them alone who will show them what is right from wrong? Good information vs bad information? I believe if we guide them in the right direction early on our students will be better for it in the long run. #caedchat
A2: some Ts I support are still hesitant to join Twitter. Being probationary & young thwyveorry about interacting online with Ss, even professionally! Others are against cell phones. Truly I think they need ideas, & opportunity to explore #caedchat more support
This study revealed that the future of learning will be profoundly social, personalized, and supported by teachers and technology. And new insights into the knowledge and experiences students will need to be “Life-ready” and not simply “work-ready.” #caedchat#2030learningdesign
Have you ever thought of a permission slip or information letter where it shows how you will help and inform your students how to better represent themselves online? #caedchat I will be sharing an example later.
A2: we should definitely incorporate social media in the classroom, it’s the world our kids live in. But with that, we need to teach them to use it appropriately and responsibly. There are consequences that go with posting, like, it NEVER goes away! #caedchat
A2: I want to agree with you enthusiastically, but two days of harassment by white supremacists this summer made me less enthusiastic. Agree we can’t withdraw, give up, but we need to consider how that kind of experience can affect kids #caedchat
Yes, I always go through a #TwitterEDUniversity training course and walk them through how to create an EDU only twitter and lock their privacy settings down. I set this up all with parent buy in and permission. #caedchat
I prefer to use social media that I have more control over. I'm excited about the grid pals feature on @Flipgrid .I don't have to worry about things like cyberbullying and phishing. #caedchat
Teaching with Technology courses and how educators can Accelerate Their Success with ICT as part of your Professional Development to develop your digital literacy. #caedchat#2030learningdesign
Q3: What is a simplified definition of Social Media? With this simplified definition you came up with, do you think you are already using social media in class? How? #caedchat
A.2 Do we have an opportunity to help students to question what social media is and does? lessTeaching them to be less inclined to venture inappropriately when they are on their own.
#caedchat
A2 Don’t be timid. Find out what the rules are for SM in your district. Follow them, and then encourage your Ss to follow your SM account as a positive example of how SM can be used in the world #caedchat
I have a permission slip template here that connects through #autocrat HERE: https://t.co/46u4fmQpXl
You collect all the info through a Google Form to create personalized permission slips. #caedchat
According to the research! Today’s kindergartners will graduate better prepared for their futures if they have a strong social and emotional foundation that is developed in a personalized learning environment. #caedchat
A3 - connecting with others using some form of visual communication. Posters with Ss comments qualify under this definition. I am taking this to the next level this year with @seesaw to create an online communication hub about class activities #caedchat
Q3: What is a simplified definition of Social Media? With this simplified definition you came up with, do you think you are already using social media in class? How? #caedchat
A3: Social Media is any digital means to communicate and collaborate with another person. I already do this through Google Classroom questions, Google Doc Chat, and @Flipgrid . Social Media does not have to mean the big companies #caedchat
Q3: What is a simplified definition of Social Media? With this simplified definition you came up with, do you think you are already using social media in class? How? #caedchat
appreciate that Leila - it was stressful at first, but I knew it would blow over relatively quickly and wasn’t really scared by it. I’d have felt much worse if a student had been exposed to that. Protected/locked accounts would help, of course #caedchat
Social media provides an opportunity to share your story while interacting with other's stories around the world.
My students have sought out experts and others to assist them in their #Learning story.
#caedchat
A3. Results in research showed that these soft skills are twice as predictive of a student’s academic achievement as home environment and demographics. #caedchat
Q3: What is a simplified definition of Social Media? With this simplified definition you came up with, do you think you are already using social media in class? How? #caedchat
Good point Joe. I was thinking about the big ones. @padlet too! I guess we need to start with what we “can” do & what isssafe for Ss #caedchat free @Flipgrid is💯

@JoeMarquez70, @Flipgrid, @padlet, @Flipgrid
A3 It is a “water cooler” on a large scale. People meet at the water cooler to discuss and share. This is how I use my classroom IG account: I share anything of mathematical interest with my Ss #caedchat
Check your adoptions. ‘MHE StudySync and Wonders have Blasts. As learn to give feedback. Nearpod has sharing of thoughts. Follet Destiny has Collection. Make it safe. #caedchat
Love @padlet. Also many other apps have comment features too, which can increase the collaboration. @CoggleIt for mindmaps, @voicethread for verbal comments on presentations, @prezi. #caedchat

A3: Communication on a grand scale, with a larger audience and few limits on what can be shared Planning to use Google Classroom and @padlet for sure this year. Also curious about @Flipgrid#caedchat
Q4: How can we ensure that our students are using social media correctly outside the classroom if we don’t help them learn to use it inside the classroom? Why is it important to become our students Social Media “Drivers Ed” instructor? #caedchat
So true. We miss so much using only writing. Recently used @Screencastify to leave audio comments on my classmates work in my doctorate program. And @screencasto let’s you record video too. Helps with the awkwardness of writing comments. #caedchat

A4: The Social Media world is a rough place, yet many students are left to fend for themselves and learn how to uses this form of communication from friends and strangers. Teachers need to take a roll on the front line to help frame their social media etiquette? #CaEdChat
Q4: How can we ensure that our students are using social media correctly outside the classroom if we don’t help them learn to use it inside the classroom? Why is it important to become our students Social Media “Drivers Ed” instructor? #caedchat
A4 - The reality is that they will be using it. They should understand that what they post is forever, even if they delete it. They also need to use various technologies because universities are jumping on the tech bandwagon too! #caedchat
Q4: How can we ensure that our students are using social media correctly outside the classroom if we don’t help them learn to use it inside the classroom? Why is it important to become our students Social Media “Drivers Ed” instructor? #caedchat
A4: I think giving Ss some “real” posts, tweets, snaps etc to analyze & reflect, some “law” cases to research, spiraling all year. Have them make commercials, videos, PSA about how to use social media to better your life or ruin it #caedchat “have them practice” w/feedback
A1) Social media has opened up many opportunities for me through collaboration with other educators. Personally, social media allows my family and relatives to communicate across state and country borders. #caedchat
we can't! again I say we need to purposefully guide rather than ignore or be fearful - this is not a one lesson thing either - needs to be front loading and continued convos #CAedchat
Q4: How can we ensure that our students are using social media correctly outside the classroom if we don’t help them learn to use it inside the classroom? Why is it important to become our students Social Media “Drivers Ed” instructor? #caedchat

A4 I really think that in some communities like mine you have to start with admin, teachers & parents to show benefits to using, demo use & gain experience on how to use in a classroom. I would say less than 5/40 use SM professionally. #CAedchat
A4: I think giving Ss some “real” posts, tweets, snaps etc to analyze & reflect, some “law” cases to research, spiraling all year. Have them make commercials, videos, PSA about how to use social media to better your life or ruin it #caedchat “have them practice” w/feedback
Yes! I love this. Situational learning from real life conversation online! Love it. I also love using a Twitter Template to have the student create Social Media conversations between historical or literary figures! #caedchathttps://t.co/wTeVcnmvza
A.4 When I demanded that students posted their @YouTube classroom assignments as Public. The quality of their work improved greatly. They took more pride in their work due to that exposure. The same should be true for all of their Social Media
#caedchathttps://t.co/cSFxVLE8L7
A4 I don't think it's possible to ensure that our Ss are using SM correctly outside of class. I think proper use of SM, like many things, comes with maturity. The only thing we can do is provide good examples of SM use for them to follow #caedchat
A4: I just had a conversation with an exec from a Fortune 500 company who told me that before she even reads the resume, she researches social media of applicants. I know admissions officers who do the same for college applicants. Social media history will follow Ss. #caedchat
@marciamentor - I’ll be teaching a social justice themed communications course for HS seniors during spring semester this year. Thinking about these ideas, others to make social media part of curriculum #caedchat
That's why I like the idea of the conversation area of #MicrosoftTeams. Giving them practice with support in proper online conversations and still the fun of memes and stickers. #caedchat#MIEExpert
A4: It's important because it's how the world is communicating. Ss won't be able to avoid using it so we need to teach and model successful use #caedchat
A3) Social media allows people to collaborate and communicate in a digital space. Most of my middle school students are not old enough to have there own acount but I will be using social media to share tutorials and projects this semester, maybe collab with a class #caedchat
A4: A lot of how we manage our "driver's ed" training for social media depends on grade level, where social-emotional development really come into play. #caedchat
Q6: How can we use tools and apps we already use in class to simulate a Social Media App experience without the need to have students sign up for a social media account? #caedchat
As long as the purpose is educational posting public is appropriate. We have a release from parents for social media and use of images in the classroom.
#caedchat
I think that to a certain extent there is a stages of social media learning that is similar to piaget's learning ideas. We can prepare the kids in the class, but the experience and age will be important https://t.co/JV6xTyE8AO#caedchat
Moving beyond 21st century learning students place a greater emphasis on the importance of creative, social, emotional, and technology skills than teachers do. #caedchat
A6 With the new google classroom features, it will be easier to have class conversations. I also have them post on our class twitter through me. #caedchat
A6: I love using Google Slide/Drawing templates to emulate Social Media. @jmattmiller has some great examples of this! I also love Apps Like @Flipgrid and @EdjiNotes which allow students to communicate and collaborate in a way they would outside the classroom #caedchat
Q6: How can we use tools and apps we already use in class to simulate a Social Media App experience without the need to have students sign up for a social media account? #caedchat
A6. I use Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams is the hub for teamwork in Office 365 that integrates all the people, content, and tools your team needs to be more engaged and effective. NOE FREE! @MicrosoftTeams#CaEdChat
Q6: How can we use tools and apps we already use in class to simulate a Social Media App experience without the need to have students sign up for a social media account? #caedchat
Curious how many of us in #caedchat use snapchat - never struck me as an app that would appeal to me or meet any of my needs. For ed. purposes, seems basic principles of responsible use would apply across apps/platforms #caedchat
A6 - I think it can be as simple as making a bulletin board look like a social media app. Google docs can simulate a group chat. I “tweeted” some parent responses to a survey one year and posted them for B2S night, very well received. #caedchat
Q6: How can we use tools and apps we already use in class to simulate a Social Media App experience without the need to have students sign up for a social media account? #caedchat
A6) Having a shared class account where a post created by the students will be shared is probably one of the best routes. It demonstrates the actual process. I remember @Jentechnology made these cool paper samples that she hung up in class #caedchat
Q6: How can we use tools and apps we already use in class to simulate a Social Media App experience without the need to have students sign up for a social media account? #caedchat
A.6 I have students use comment threads on assignments in Google Classroom. We sometimes need to discuss and share appropriate/inappropriate student interactions as part of the #LEARNING#caedchat
A6: I like @padlet and @GoogleForEdu Classroom to help Ss understand how to comment on others ideas, especially if they disagree. Being able to engage in civil discourse is a critical skill for our Ss #caedchat
A6: Google classroom flip grid and others provide powerful collaborative opportunities between Ss and Ts. We can use these spaces to teach appropriate etiquette and civility as well as inquiry and evaluation skills #caedchat
