Hey everyone Jared from UEN here. I learned about Twitter chats while attending a conference in Wyoming. The first chat I ever attended was the rebirth of #utedchat Been hooked ever since.
Hi, #UTedChat! Havilah Jones from @alpineschools. I got curious when I met @downrightdave in person and realized he was famous on Twitter! Couldn't get enough of my new PLN and have been hooked ever since.
Hi all! Krystal checking in. I had to join twitter and do a chat as part of my EdTech endorsement. I was very anti-twitter before that. Felt like it was a waste of time. Can’t believe I didn’t know about these chats! #UTedChat

Hey #utedchat. Krystle from @JuabSD. Joined my first #edchat as a singleton looking to connect outside my district. Love this network of friends and teachers!
#UTedChat I learned about and joined twitter from my amazing mentor @btalonia. She did a great training on twitter plns for all the admin interns working at mvhs last summer. So excited to learn from her and all of you!
#utedchat Debbie from @SevierSchoolDis. I joined my first twitter chat because I wanted to hear what other educators were up to. Being in a classroom with students all day can feel very isolating! #breakout
A1 - Curiosity at the core of learning. If you can create curiosity with students of any age then they more likely to want to learn for themselves. This can lead to self efficacy and lifelong learning. #edtrex#utedchat
A1 I always find that an interest in finding the answer to a question sparks my learning. It’s the same with students. If we can get them curious to find an answer to a question - you’ve got them. #UTedChat
It's so true. You might often start with curiosity, but you can also find more things to be curious about along the way. That's when I know I'm really learning. #utedchat
A1: I see consistent positive feedback create safe learning environments that foster curiosity. Feels and looks a lot like a great relationship. #utedchat
A2 - I am starting 20% time with my students tomorrow to give them time to be curious, find a research topic and engage with a global audience. I am not sure how it will go, yet, but I am hopeful that it will create a creative environment. #utedchat
A2: I share snippets of books and articles all the time. More often than not, a student wants to read the whole thing. Book chats sell books! #utedchat
A2 student voice and choice. Curiosity is better fostered when students have a choice in their learning. Students need to explore what intrigues them. Ask questions, try new things, make mistakes. #UTedChat
A2 I think successful teachers find a way to turn an essential question into a challenge for the students to solve throughout a lesson. Maybe it’s using manipulatives, maybe media, but you can get kids hooked on findings answers. #utedchat
A2: I am always wishing that I wasn't feeling the pressure this time of year brings to so many of us. So I try to get them following their passions in writing, etc. #utedchat
I am unsure how it will go right now. I am encouraging the students to think differently, but to find an audience for their research, so we talked about youtube, blogging, podcasting, and other non-trad outlets today. I will keep you posted. #utedchat
Today, students selected articles from the @ScienceNews to read and share in class. We learned about fungi on snakes, flatworms have memory, and there are some really cool sunglasses for sale based on astronaut helmets. #utedchat
A2: My hope is that I can remain curious as that is what leads me to new passions and help me discover new skills & talents. I hope every teacher not only inspires curiosity but lives it! #UTedChat
A2: I do genius projects with my students. They come up with projects they want to learn about and try. I am a mentor and supporter to help them be successful. It is amazing to see them apply content skills as the learn and create in atea where they are curious. #UTedChat
A2: Student choice. Giving them choice and ownership over their own learning allows them to explore things they are curious about and discover what kind of a learner they are. #UTedChat
A2: I love the idea of using phenomenon as a way of sparking curiosity. Having students try to explain why something happens, test their ideas, and then change their thinking can be such a powerful experience. #UTedChat
Start small. Make a part of the assignment or project open to choice then work your way to more and more student ownership. Just letting them loose from the get-go can leave a lot of student floundering. #UTedChat
Q2: I like to pose questions that interest students. I wish I were doing more. I feel crunched for time... I want to bring in more math based tasks that invoke a S's curiosity and engages them in the learning process #utedchat
A3 The best way I found to cultivate curiosity in my own life is to share what I’ve learned or what I am learning about right now. When I share I find similarities with people and it sparks further learning in different areas. #UTedChat
A3: I scratch my curiosity by finding time to read and following my interests. Unfortunately, I still struggle to find the additional time to implement like I would like. #utedchat
A4 - Short answer - Too much. Long answer - Applying for programs, traveling, edchats, taking classes, engaging with people internationally. I feed my curiosity on a daily basis. #utedchat
A3 Two things that help me stay curious - Read more books, listen to more podcasts. Both help me explore the world and learn from amazing people. #UTedChat
Over my career, I have had many colleagues burn out from the rigors of our profession. Stay curious by making time for yourself, to rest and recover physically and mentally. #utedchat
A3: I cultivate my own curiosity by going down new rabbit holes all the time. Join a #mooc. Listen to a new podcast. Order the book I heard about TODAY instead of putting it off. Variety helps my brain. #utedchat
A3: One of the most important things I have done is create a PLN of educators in Utah, across the nation, & world. Those who are like minded and those who differ in opinion make we wonder, think, they push me to consider my beliefs and inspire me to be better! #UTedChat
A3: I have recently discovered webinars! I sign up for all that I can find. I also feed my curiosity through twitter and other reading. My favorite way is through conversations. #UTedChat
Also sharing our interests and curiosities with our students, letting them see the person behind the teacher. It helps broaden their horizons. #UTedChat
Q3: I hunt... not for creatures, but for knowledge. This group, endorsements, masters programs, UCET, talking to other educators. I also do various arts and read... I like to stay busy and do lots of stuff. #utedchat
A3: I love to share with others and learn from others. There are so many great people around us who are eager to share and learn. I surround myself with those people. #UTedChat
A3 I pick something new each year to learn about. In the past it’s been skiing, guitar, golf, mountain biking, gardening, etc... This year it’s going to be mastering the grill and smoker. Easy hobby to feed #UTedChat
Mmmmm I love rabbit holes. I find myself getting into the most random stuff. BUT! Then I find that thing that is was so obsessed with, popping up in all sorts of ways and contexts. #buildingschema#UTedChat
A4 - For me it is just trying to rethink all the time and being consistently innovative. However, there are just days where I need to pause and just read a text with my students. All of it takes a lot of effort that sometimes is hard to find. #utedchat
A3: Hey guys! Just jumping in midstream. I love learning new things. I'm always looking for summer opportunities. The @UofUHumanities has a great summer lecture series through the Tanner Humanities Center. And I love travelling. #UTedChat In the summer. When I have time!
A4: Someone can't be curious if they are too tired, or stuck only in survival mode. Like Maslow's hierarchy, you can't be self-actualized if you're looking for food. #utedchat
A4: I think that time and concern about how we might be seen if we aren't keep many of us from setting our students loose on following their curiosities. #utedchat
A4: fear of change. Curiosity can lead to some pretty unexpected places so if you aren’t prepared to flounder a bit in uncertainty as you find your way, it can scare some people away. #UTedChat
A4: The biggest barrier is time. The second biggest is time. The third biggest is time. Then we can talk about complacency - it's easy to get comfortable with what we know. That should make us UNcomfortable because it means we're getting stale. #utedchat
A4: I think curiosity can get slowed in the daily grind of compliance and negativity. Always keep the glass half full and looking for more. Students feed off that positive energy and curiosity! #utedchat
True. I think I've thought out loud... "what would Principal C say if he walked in and saw us now" a few times. Not as many as I should though. #utedchat
We have to make it safe to take risks. Admin has a HUGE part to play in that with how evaluations are approached. Do they reward innovation, even when it means there are failures? Or do they have a zero-defect mindset. That can be destructive. #Utedchat
A4 Going all in. Periphery curiosity is fine and can lead to realizations. But jumping in with both feet takes time and sustained effort. Most people are satisfied with 75 to 80% of mastery. Going all in takes high level commitment. Which can be daunting #UTedChat
A4: Maybe it's not necessarily time that is the barrier. Maybe it's the lack of support. If so, I know a great coach who can help! #UTedChat#ASDInnovativeLearningTeam (We need a better hashtag...)
A4: Fear. The unknown; self judgement; imperfection; what others might think, say or do; of failing or appearing weak, etc. Time to drop Fear & live our best lives unapologetically! #UTedChat
Two parts - supporting each other and celebrating others's successes. The third piece from the curious innovator is to share freely without being pushy. #utedchat
A4: Management of students, especially the young ones, can be a barrier. Allowing students the autonomy to explore and wonder looks and feels very different from the "traditional" classroom. It takes a mindshit and a bit of bravery sometimes. #UTedChat
A5: One person in my life was my grandpa. He was always curious and was willing to ask me what I thought. I didn't realize the effect his actions have had on me as a learner until later in life. #utedchat
A5 #utedchat and #edcamput were born out of curiosity. We wanted to see if anyone was interested in new forms of professional learning. We’ve found that if you build it - they will come!
Make Curiosity a part of your school culture. If leaders allow risks and supports for teachers they will feel more comfortable to allow students the same! #UTedChat
A5: My principal asked me "what if...?" about one of my classroom practices. It made me want to put his "what if" into practice so I could know the answer. #utedchat@juabhighwasps
A5: Mostly I'm just naturally a generalist fascinated with connections so I'm always looking for more. Students ask me random questions all the time. When I don't know the answer, I want to. If it's something we can find on Google, I let them look it up & teach us. #UTEdchat
A5 My students drive curiosity in my classroom because they ask the awesomest questions! The key is to go with it... One example- Students wanted to know more about ants after a physics discussion in class about how much they can carry. We ordered an ant colony! So fun #utedchat
Great question. I see curiosity embedded in people with high self efficacy. Curiosity is always a benefit. It’s part of their character and will. A conscious choice. #utedchat
A5: My curiosity has been tapped in the past by summer core academy. I love collaborating with peers and learning new things. It inspires me to be a better teacher. #utedchat
A5 part 2: I was curious about @NBPTS when I saw a random email in the faculty room about it. Jumped right in. I was curious about the @HSG_UT Utah Teacher Fellowship when @UNBC2 contacted me with info about it. Both changed my life. #UTEdchat
A5: I make the things I like more interesting/real. 150' flying Air Rockets, cooking, lego stuff. The Ss are drawn to it all. I especially enjoy when a S out designs me. #utedchat
A5: My high school woodshop teacher supported me in completly rebuilding a piano during my senior year. A bit of a learning curve but he supported me me all the way through. Still have it. Everytime I see it I remember what happens when curiousity and support combine. #UTedChat
What a great experience! I hope that you share that story with others and I expect that you are carrying on the example of that great teacher in your own ways. #utedchat
A6: Foster a culture of learning beyond what is asked. Celebrate when students come in and shared what they read/watched/listened to beyond your lesson. Seek connections and give options for further learning. #UTedChat
A6: More open ended projects. I had my students plan their own service projects and share. I was amazed at what they planned, how much they cared, and what they accomplished. #UTedChat
A5: My littles who are the brightest spot of my day-they never cease to teach me to stop and wonder. Their questions, curiosity and bright eyes help me learn from the smallest and simplest moments of the day! #UTedChat
Q6: I'm always looking for pop culture connections (Captain America and WW II War Bonds was a winner for one student last year) ... Definitely open to more ideas though! #UTEdchat
I mean that is why Netflix so successful, they don’t let you just finish TV series and ended it there. They give you more recommendations “if you liked _____ you might like ______” #UTedchat#bingelearning
Sometimes it’s absent because those leaders aren’t allowed to be curious and take risks either. It’s amazing what can happen when we nurture curiosity & innovation from the very top! #UTedChat
A6: We have to find ways to address the pressure educators are feeling to abandon the wonder and curiosity that make learning real and meaningful. If we aren't intentional about it, we and other educators like us will have to keep looking over their shoulders. #utedchat
A6: We all get to design and offer the most amazing extra and co-curricular experiences for our students. Academics, arts, sports, clubs, STEM, etc... Students find their passion. Suddenly their curiosity and dreams become unlocked! #utedchat

Thanks to @effort2learn for moderating #utedchat tonight. Lots of good discussion. Next week we have @DeborahGatrell1 leading the chat on School Safety. See you then.
A6: This is the reason I do genius pronects with my students. I want them to know that the skills and content we learn are not the end goal. They are tools to help bring our curiosities and ideas to life. #UTedChat
Q6: I think we need to listen to our students and tap into their interests. This way we can guide students in a way that will engage them in learning. #utedchat

A6: Build in time to answer questions, nudge them in a direction and let them fly with the supports & environment they need to reach their goals! #UTedChat
I assign math assignments and assessments through an app called mathspace. Some students began exploring the app when they finished. I loved when an 8th grader said, "I am learning about Trigonometry" #utedchat
