Unicorn on a Roll by Dana Simpson HUMOR, Warren the 13th and The All-Seeing Eye: A Novel by Tania Del Rio FANTASY MYSTERY
I also like reading the classics, because often too hard for Ss on their own, but culturally valuable, like Anne of Green Gables
Rain Rein is an awesome book, but I think would be tough as a read aloud
The Seven Most Important Things is great too

If it is picture books I recommend anything by. Margaret Read MacDonald.
. Asimov also has plenty of short stories that could read very well in that age range, covering a wide swath of topics.
