Join me at 10:00 EST 9:00CST #Edpiper for a great chat: Putting Teachers First! How to support, encourage, and appreciate the most important resource in education: TEACHERS!
#forsythpln#EDCHAT#NAESP#AASAHQ#AACTE
I’m Dr. Cindy Woody from Corsicana, TX. I’ve taught at every level from preschool to graduate students & also served as a principal & central office leader. I have always loved school! #EDpiper
Thanks for having me! I always love spending time with the #EDpiper family! Looking forward to talking about the most valuable resource in schools, the TEACHER!!!
👋#EDpiper Family! Laurie from ATX. I am in my 19th year in education. I have been a classroom T, overseen IT, PD, Communications, Curriculum and Ed. Foundation. Excited to learn with you all tonight.
A1: Without trust, the building does not have a direction. With trust, Ts can come to the admin and help steer the building in what's best for the kids. #edpiper
Hi all! Jessica, Ed Specialist at @Region12...former admin, instructional coach, & Montessori teacher...passionately love supporting teachers through meaningful PD #EDpiper
Barbara Page in Waco, TX! Third grade teacher @CastlemanCreek and EdD student at Baylor! This is my 6th year in the classroom and I've always been in elementary settings 3-6 is my experience. Love this profession & wouldn't trade it for the world! #EDpiper

R1 - just like with athletic teams, I have to trust the coach before I’ll play my hardest for him. No different than with an administrator. I have to know you see, hear, value, & care for me. #EDpiper
A1: Trust is the foundation to all relationships, but even more so for the Ts/Admin...teaching is challenging...need to trust ea other through the process to achieve success. #EDpiper
R1: building trust is essential in establishing goals and developing the vision of a school. It also allows Ts the opportunity to be innovative and try new things that will allow for Ss success. #EDpiper
A1: Same reason why it's important for us to build TRUST with our Ss. Without relationships, the work can't get done to it's best capacity! It's a team effort & there's no team without trust! #EDpiper
When I TRUST my administrators, I’m more willing to be honest with what I need, the questions I have, and what I really think. They can be more impactful leaders because they know what is REALLY going on. #EDpiper@SiffordAngelia@ElkPrincipal@datadivakaren
Hi Cindy!!! Glad to be here- I have been so busy with school & work, I've had to neglect some of my weekly chats! But, I'm back! I hope you had a great day!!! #EDpiper
Leaders/coaches must hold hard conversations w/teachers. The coaching/mentoring piece is transformational in schools. Teachers must feel they can be vulnerable with admin/coaches to refine areas of practice. If you do not have the teachers’trust, then the process fails. #edpiper

R2: Ts like the opportunity for autonomy with how they run their classroom. They want respect from their colleagues and admins. They also want respect for what they do from all stakeholders. #EDpiper
A1. Trust is the cornerstone of your school’s culture. If you don’t have trust, everything you build will be on an unstable foundation. #architecturemetaphorsFTW#edpiper.
A2: SUPPORT & TRUST! When this is consistent, the work gets done & there is always a growth mindset! I love for my appraisers to come in & give me a couple of things I could improve on b/c those relationships have been formed & I get to be intentional about my practice! #EDpiper
A2: I've noticed in the strikes it's generally the same things being asked for repeatedly...smaller class sizes, mental health supports (inc. counselors & nurses), fair wages. Ts know what STUDENTS need & what they need to be successful for Ss. #EDpiper
A1: When a school community is built on trust the wellbeing of staff is also being prioritized. This is what helps to create a safe and supportive learning environment where students are able to learn! #edpiper
The key to teacher job satisfaction are the following: autonomy, empowerment, authenticity, and acknowledgment. #edpiper (Did I forget canned sodas and food at faculty meetings and jeans passes?). 👖 🥤 🍪
A2: I think one of the best is aspirational conversations, which make teacher feel like they are valued and have a voice. feel free to use these with your faculty instead of teacher evals, which have little value. #edpiper
R2: in Indiana, there is a serious shortage of Ts. Unfortunately, our governor is not asking Ts why this is the case and is putting business leaders on the committee to investigate. In addition, our letter grading system for schools is being revamped w/o input as well #EDpiper
A3. Remind them that you are there for them and that you can help them through whatever they might need. When the principal is stressed out, the teachers are stressed out. #edpiper
R3: casual days every once in a while. Another is “Free-pop Friday”. Come and get a can of pop during your prep. Maybe #Longs Donuts, or a pizza party. It doesn’t take much to feel appreciated. #EDpiper
A3: Continue the support & try to lessen the load as much as possible! REASSURE, EMPOWER, & TRUST!!!!!!!!!! We work better as a team than in silos & during these stressful times, it's an opportunity to come together. #EDpiper
A3: One of the biggest things to help alleviate stress is to consider whether you are respecting time. Ts don't mind giving you their time if they feel it's useful...but if it's wasted...frustration leads to anger. #EDpiper
A2: Experiential professional development, ongoing support from admin and colleagues, and priority placed on educator wellness! These factors all play a huge role in teacher satisfaction! #edpiper
I love seeing my administrators in my room because then I feel like they’re connected and aware of the hard work that is taking place. I really hate that classroom walkthroughs always seem to get put on the back burner. #EDpiper
A3: Remind them how appreciative you are of them. That can be said with extra time to plan (if possible), covering a class, words of encouragement. They also never said no to food. #edpiper
I have found that during stressfultimes if I only look and comment on the positive it helps. Teachers are their worst critics and if I believe in them it helps. #EDpiper
A2. Create the least amount of stress you can for people. Make the workplace and in our case, learning place as fun as you can. Looneing up and having fun doesn’t mean our team isn’t 💯% for kids and cont. improvement. It means we want to have fun while doing it. #edpiper
Lol, you must have seen our refrigerator magnets. And belt buckles. And tortilla chips. And cookie cutters. Everything here comes in the shape of Texas. #edpiper
A1. Trust is the cornerstone of your school’s culture. If you don’t have trust, everything you build will be on an unstable foundation. #architecturemetaphorsFTW#edpiper.
A3: Sometimes it’s the small things, hand written notes of encouragement, little pick me ups (food, drinks), covering a duty, jeans 👖 passes, and being accessible! #edpiper
Oops I meant loosening up but apparently my smart phone figured I meant looning up. Maybe it things in that crazy. Twitter, if you can hear me, any time now is good for an edit feature.......😂 #edpiper
A3: Mindfulness! Educators need minfulness practices incorporated into the school day just as their students do. Finding moments for mindfulness during meetings, or providing resources for teachers to use throughout the day is a great way to start. #SEL#edpiper
R3: casual days every once in a while. Another is “Free-pop Friday”. Come and get a can of pop during your prep. Maybe #Longs Donuts, or a pizza party. It doesn’t take much to feel appreciated. #EDpiper
A2: Respect. Being treated as the highly educated professional a teacher is. Asking for feedback and input when decisions need to be made, providing opportunities and pathways to grow. #edpiper
A4: I think a supportive, problem-solving coach/admin can use a teacher's strength to grow their weakness. Focusing on strengths creates a positive intent to help someone grow...not a gotcha. #EDpiper
A4: we hire teachers because of their strengths, but then admin manages them on weaknesses, areas of improvement. it makes no sense. develop their strengths/talents, which is why you hired them and let them excel, let them shine! #edpiper
A4: No one likes to be told ONLY what they're bad at. Let's focus on strengths & build on those in order to work on areas of growth from there. When you start with the strengths, Ts feel empowered to take anything else on! #EDpiper
A4: Focusing on strengths creates a positive environment for many to learn and grow, Ts included. When you highlight their strengths, the building moves in the right direction. #edpiper
These Qs are legit applicable to my life rn (Feb., am I right?)
Truly LISTEN and HELP! 🙏🏻 If you’re going to ask me to track/do ONE MORE THING then find a way to help me be successful. I DON’T want to just shut my 🚪 but at some point I just want to TEACH my Ss! #EDpiper
Yes, respecting time - super important. I love Todd Whitaker & Anne Breaux’s book, 10 Minute Inservice. I used it to cut my faculty meetings to 11 minutes & to keep them focused on the real topic: teaching & learninf, not administrivia. #edpiper@DrBradJohnson
A3: provide breaks, food, coffee cart, get businesses to donate to pamper. Had a principal hire a masseuse and teachers got a 20 min chair massage while he subbed for them. #gamechanger#itISthelittleThings#edpiper
Confidentteachers take more risk. If you talk up each other’s strengths then more sharing occurs thus stronger teams. It is a community not a competition!#EDpiper
When they asked me to teach science I was intimidated at first. They wanted a robotics program. I gave them that, maker sessions & genius times. Now science looks like this. It was a good call... #edpiper
Being transparent w/ data but letting Ts know that we’re all on the same ship heading in the same direction.. Nobody should blame others if we are all in the boat together. However, we do need to fill in some of our own adult gaps & holes so the ship afloat? #EDpiper

The first way to kill my spirit is to harp on where I struggle. Highlight what I’m awesome at so that I have the motivation to grow professionally in my weakness. Lord knows teaching is difficult enough with the added burden of reminders of inadequacy! #EDpiper
A5: Knowing a Ts passion means you can support that passion in the classroom. Provide the materials to help tap that passion. Much like Ss learning, it all starts with relationship building. #edpiper
A4- Using strengths allow to empower that person to lead in those areas, while encouraging them to partner with others on not so strong areas. Its win win. They work harder and feel passionate about it. I never like how Ts focus on Ss weakness for TEKS. #EDpiper
I did the same. A day w friends & family, away from work, no guilt, no need to hide it, can work wonders for a stressed teacher. I told teachers they have to learn to live & work simultaneously. Go to family events & be present. No do-overs when you’re old. #edpiper
A5: Play on the strengths of those on your team. If Ts are passionate about a certain topic- let them conduct PD. If Ts are passionate about classroom instruction- let others observe them. PLAY ON THOSE STRENGTHS IN ORDER TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT OF RISK-TAKING! #EDpiper
R5: if you identify what a Ts passion is, the overall vision of the admin can be met by putting the strongest individuals in the roles needed to meet the vision. #EDpiper
A4: Focusing on strengths instead of weaknesses helps teachers to overcome challenges, better utilize their strengths, and grow from mistakes! Its always important to celebrate your successes, especially during challenging times! #edpiper
A5: Passion based learning is for ALL learners...it allows the learner to feel valued...to know that their work has value and meaning to others. #geniushour holds so much potential as PD #EDpiper
A5: I always told my teachers, bring your passions into the classroom, if you cook, play an instrument, like to do crafts, let students see you as more than a teacher, let them see you do something youre passionate about too, this build deeper relationships with them #edpiper
A5: when I know my teachers’ passions I know the language of their heart. I know how to communicate with them, how to best collaborate with them, and how to help them help students to their highest potential. #WinsAllAround#edpiper
I hadn’t thought of it this way, but isn’t building a staff a lot like building an NFL team? 🏈 Wouldn’t we see more success/growth if we played to Ts strengths instead of having a bunch of “linemen” trying to learn how to be kickers? 🤔 #EDpiper
A4: we hire teachers because of their strengths, but then admin manages them on weaknesses, areas of improvement. it makes no sense. develop their strengths/talents, which is why you hired them and let them excel, let them shine! #edpiper
If you want an good teacher to get even better, start by noticing & voicing appreciation for what he or she does. I still have some post-it notes written by an encouraging principal from years ago. Use your words! Give affirmations! #EDpiper
A6: Celebrate them over the intercom where everyone is listening. Celebrate them with notes in their mailbox or saying something in the hall. Celebrating with food never hurt either. #edpiper
I certainly know that feeling. At the same time, it's not always about me. It's about the kids. I'd rather celebrate them and their success in the classroom than mine. #edpiper
A5- Ts passion encouraged can ignite a powerful movement in the building 4 culture & https://t.co/WZVbvzcToR models for Ss 2B enthusiastic about what you do& it can ignite the fire to share their passion w/the campus.Never stifle their light, but let it shine brilliantly!#EDpiper
A6: I love to celebrate as many landmarks as staff will let me. Professional learning accomplishments like Google certs, to personal goals met. Today, I’ll take celebrating my new BFFs. 🎉 #ICanHearAllTheThings#BagsAreLoudYall. #edpiper
Celebrating them by watching their class, giving comp time, jeans day for the week (always a plus). Giving s/o over the intercom to awesomeness you see in the hallway #EDpiper
So many great things happen that principals don’tknow about. We started you are the hero for the day. Any teacher tells me someone they want to recognize. I get them a sonic drink, balloons, sonic card and interrupt their class by telling the class how special they are. #EDpiper
A kind word goes SO far! One of my mentors told me to be sure to smile & visit w teachers as I moved through the school. The principal is a uniquely visible figure. When he/she walks across campus, there’s a certain awareness of staff & students. Be positive & kind! #edpiper
We celebrate on many levels, some not serious. One of the teachers walks around w/a Monday Night Football sheet ever week. He posts winner and keeps running tally. We always recognize staff who are staring new programs for the school, etc. Celebrate BDays at staff mtgs. #edpiper
Celebrating them by watching their class, giving comp time, jeans day for the week (always a plus). Giving s/o over the intercom to awesomeness you see in the hallway #EDpiper
A huge shoutout to @DrBradJohnson for sharing his insights from his newest book, Putting Teachers First. It is widely available in print & digital versions. THANK YOU for being a voice for teachers & leaders everywhere! #EDpiper
A5: It is important to know teachers passions so they can introduce them to students, & try different approaches to teaching. This creates a healthy school culture. This also encourages educators to express themselves, which supports wellbeing. #edpiper
A6-Spotlighting Ts classroom in a newsletter, having a monthly drawing of Ts based off attendance, hosting a meeting with celebrations given by anyone, and popping in classrooms to say hi. #EDpiper
I love the idea of recognizing some Ts in a weekly newsletter to parents or better yet, having the super pop in to personally thank a few Ts on each campus each month. Now THAT would be powerful! @BretJimerson 🤔😉 #EDpiper
Had a blast! thanks for having me! Hopefully we can change how teachers are viewed. Teachers are the most valuable resource of administration! they need to continually show their teachers appreciation and support! #Edpiper
Thanks @DrBradJohnson! I know it’s late in your time zone, so double thanks for hosting tonight! So much fun to spend time with a great author & advocate! #edpiper

Looking for a presenter's handout for @TCEA 2019? Handouts can be found with the presentation description on the app or online at https://t.co/rzwwwaDZdR
A6: Teachers wear many hats & have some of the hardest jobs! We can celebrate teachers by supporting their wellbeing. This could be dedicating our time, regularly checking in and continuing to provide resources and opportunities for mindfulness during the day. #edpiper
