Hi . Spring break for me so 12:00 exists today!
How testing reinforce or mediate the inequality in society? Question to panel
WELCOME Topic: If school culture is so important when and where are discussions about each school's culture taking place?
Yes... in your experience, does that happen?
Schools have the opportunity to showcase social and emotional learning, but we shouldn't rush accountability https://t.co/fXXq1unu9Q
Liberia Needs Free Public Schools, not Privatization and Outsourcing of Its Responsibility to Children https://t.co/rmgfJ24jUZ
On this day in history the Civil#War began with the attack on Fort Sumter
Unfortunately no! If team tch it should be done within the team.
How is the topic of 'culture' handled in your work setting?
In my experience, so far, these conversations are happening behind closed doors in admin offices. need to surface more
Students who do not do well in tests, they get drilled not deeper learning - Lorrie
In the online setting it's briefly touched on in our quarterly calls/conferences as a whole teach.
Doesn't get much better than the student Beauregaurd firing on his teacher - Anderson who commanded Fort Sumter
How can we get them to surface and not keep them sheltered?
... so is a team really a 'team' if topic of culture is ignored?

NOW Topic: If school culture is so important then when and where are discussions about each school's culture taking place?
I would say no. But most consider it as being one.
Translations of vocabulary truly support ELLs learning English. Heres how and why to use them now!

Hearing words leads to poorer retention than seeing words - but testing after either helps retention https://t.co/i8h3iw4tNs
WHAT CHARACTERISTICS define your school? Start here, and grow forward…
So what are characteristics that denote a strong culture in on-line world??
Amazing TEACHERS: Last day 4 students 2 enter the WhatsYourStory? vid contest for a shot @$10k! https://t.co/6YB6lTRqxz
Have to be open with Ts, Ss Ask input on culture perception, share those, move forward together
online, adult ed, vocational training, nontraditional, single parent, cater to students
Who does the explaining in your class? The teacher or the students?
Calling a team a team does not make it a team...correct?
There is so much to unpack in the world culture - teaching/student/instructional/professional dev, etc but little convo is happening
Is this the discussion time/site for at 11am today (Central Time)?
cater to students, is that enough? What else?
cooperation, willingness to help encourage students and be supportive of student setbacks
Welcome to -> we're discussing school culture... jump in.
INteresting.... respect, a spirit of learning , kindness in sharing
It is much easier to deal with misbehavior at its earliest point than it is once it develops. https://t.co/6roxO8ovR4
Yes... culture so important, rarely addressed... why?
If school culture is a byproduct, then what produces culture?
Is what you value/believe shared by others at your school? What does your answer to this Q say about the culture of your school?
Correct! They need to work together and support each other, point out ways to grow
while eating lunch at school ...
HOW consistent are the written and unwritten rules of your school? What does this say about the culture of your school?
I personalize learning as much as possible by customizing videos based on what student needs to work on
WHo has time to talk culture w everything else going on.yet I believe it to be an important discussion -sets the tone
parents would say small school/community but Ts would say that there is a struggle to maintain/grow involvement
School culture is what is felt the second you walk through the door ... Like the spirit of the school ... You feel it
As a T I would say forward-thinking and willing to grow/change to meet Ss needs...but community doesn't see that
The rules seem to change based on Program Chair. They're supposed to be the same but never is.

that is a tough question to think honestly about. How do you address a dichotomy of values?

Parent here. Curious to hear why you think there are these different impressions of positive school culture. https://t.co/rAOPq8kyn5
parents would say small school/community but Ts would say that there is a struggle to maintain/grow involvement
Some might say Battle of Wills...other talking through and prioritizing what is best for Ss
well it depends. For example, Is there a shared belief/value of 'differences of opinions' or a sense of discomfort?
deliberate or inadvertent?
So how to handle 'differences' is a big test of culture. What works?
WHEN a teacher observes another teacher teaching the teaching of both teachers improves. How often do teachers get to do this?

- a desire to make mutual respect the cornerstone of the school. Like Dweck poinits out - we all can learn something
Depends on the school. Some allow for team teaching in a class especially if Ss have special needs
lack of effort... all around?
Indeed, all learn something. Is mutual respect enough? Co-exist vs co-develop?
Hopefully yes. In reality, not usually.
Mutual respect goes a long way - beginning of process is establishing norms before tackling changes
when we respect each other we co-exist. Big results necessitate deep work together...that means co-develop (co-evolve)
think mutual respect has to start at the top. Admin must model it and demand it of their teachers
Would those norms change yearly based on teacher/admin population?

Having one of those moments where I realize how much easier this whole teaching thing would be if I didn't give a crap.
...start where you are, do what you can wit what you have... grow from there.
I would think you would establish district norms that are not dependent on the people
It can be so hard. What do you think greases the wheels of building a good learning culture in schools
YES. It's not positive if students don't feel that way. How can students help build the culture? https://t.co/SOhaAAXjaq
Not sure about your school culture ... Ask the kids ... They can describe how they feel in every class hat is pet of the culture
well said I think it's helpful for people to have growth mindset instead of viewing it as change mindset
How? RT : I would think u would establish dist norms that are not dependent on the people
The unfortunate reality is that generally school culture develops by chance in schools rather than being developed intentionally
a strong system will be in place even as staff changes. Modeling. Framework. Broad involvement.
Is district norms always followed threw though? Is it better to further develop dis. norms?
"If you don't tell the story of your school, someone else will."
How often does that happen though?
I would agree with you %95 of the time. SOmetimes teachers and admin can make it happen. Rare though

Seriously. Social media should encourage the education community to communicate proactively. https://t.co/Ug7KxcqROt
"If you don't tell the story of your school, someone else will."
I teach in private school - it's a little easier there to establish culture
That said - when there are problems at private school - it' can destroy the culture.
True! But in a public school or post-secondary institution?
is that always bad if it's overwhelmingly positive?
School culture can unite & inspire students, staff & community if it's authentic & focused- it can be a powerful ally or a tough foe
Mom taught in religious school...forced out due to religion. Coddled sports players
I taught middle school...
Letting a school culture develop organically isn't necessarily bad but like students we can try to help it find its way
IF SCHOOL CULTURE is not a topic of discussion, what does that say about the culture of a school?
Mom was both middle and high school. All sports students were coddled to win state.

There isn't one. It can always be improved upon.
co-exist does not support growth...co-develop does
Hence the need to be able to shape culture for the better and fix problems.
An indication is whether school leaders, Ts, Ps & Ss use similar language when describing the culture of their school.
Where does that pressure on culture come from? Outside school or within?
Wow. It's great to uncover new perspectives and how others feel in a chaotic world and classroom https://t.co/DF18KttUV3
Co-Develop... WEll said - but where does that happen? I think it''s rare. Take a special leader

I think understanding a school culture & its impact from all of the stakeholders perspectives is essential to operate well within it
I would say both. Parents need to be on board for it to be successful.
Yes. But also takes a willing few on staff to become leaders in their own right by setting example
very rare... should be the norm
Yes it should... But needs to be implemented more by brave leaders.
change happens wherever you can get the allies--outside or within.
Amen - a small grop of committeed people can change the world. Doesn't work flying solo. I've learned
