Alright, Q1 When you think of inclusiveness, what comes to mind?
-
A1: It has to be intentional and well-planned.
-
Hi all! I'm Rebecca, principal from Henrico.
-
A1 - I think of hearing others' perspectives, ESPECIALLY those that are different than mine, listening, letting that guide the work.
-
A1: Inclusiveness: giving everyone a seat at the table AND access to all the food.
-
Hey Rebecca! Glad you are here :)
-
Very glad to be here again. 🤗
-
A1: I think of inclusion classroom settings. General ed students mixed with students with IEPs and 504s etc
-
Stephen, Ag teacher at Franklin County HS good evening.
-
A1: Creating an environment where everyone feels welcome and included + everyone is comfortable to voice their opinion
-
A1 spent weekend at conference where they talked about diversity of diversity... idea speaks to inclusiveness
-
Very Broad question.. I think of inclusivness as bringing in multiple viewpoints and perspectives from diverse people
-
Hey Stephen! Glad you're here and joining us for

-
I'm so glad you joined us tonight Ellen!
-
mentioned it to her a long time ago to no avail.
-
Happy to have you here Nancy!
-
Tell me more! Diversity of diversity
-
A1 - Inclusion is bringing Ss of various levels together to everyone's benefit
-
A1: All students participate in the whole education environment & we give each student what they need to succeed.
-
A1 . I think of inclusiveness as a multilayered dynamic thing with lots of moving parts.
-
So true story, i normally moderate and I keep typing that. DOH! If you catch my mistakes, quote with the hashtag, pls?
-
A1: I think about culturally responsive teaching, as well as honoring students where they are - encouraging a
-
A1.1: There is also not a singular view of this idea of "strength."
-
A1) Inclusion = all Ss learning together in the same space, each getting the supports s/he needs = equity
-
I think this is important! Intentional matters. Not only that it's planned but that it feels intentional to all <3
-
Yep! We all have something to learn from others - of different background, abilities, perspectives
-
A1 Diversity/inclusiveness is not checked off by just one change/group/person...
-
-
A1. "Everyone" SOUNDS great, but be intentional....minorities, girls, kids living in poverty, those who have no tech access, etc.
-
YES! Exactly. Many layers to address here. https://t.co/C9mecR9UHX
-
-
A1 Diversity/inclusiveness is not checked off by just one change/group/person...
-
Q2 What are the benefits of including all groups and voices in our education decisions?
-
Yes. Very important. https://t.co/Tdkptj66NW
-
-
A1: I think about culturally responsive teaching, as well as honoring students where they are - encouraging a
-
A2: It allows for not just one, mainstream voice/idea to be heard. Diff viewpoints always help, and many viewpoints are ignored
-
A2: All groups and voices are the future education is dedicated to empowering.
-
A2: All students learn and growth with each other. Each group and voice brings something to the table. Diversity helps us grow.
-
A2: What works for one gr is often good for another. Ss need to learn how to learn from ALL Ss & be reminded that all can contribute
-
A2 IN addition to viewpoints, we also learn kindness and empathy when hearing and responding to other perspectives
-
-
Yes! this is kind of a big deal! This idea seems to get overlooked all to often.
-
A2: By including all voices in eduational decisions our classroom = a community of learners where empathy and collaboration occur
-
A2: Environment can silence students even if they are not literally being told, esp if they feel there is a dominant discourse
-
A2: The ability for all students to learn from each other. Recognizing how each person can contribute and learn from each other
-
A2 Education is a local product for local market (community) has to reflect needs /goals of users to really sell.
-
A2: Everyone benefits on many levels. People need to see others who look like them & share cultural similarities to feel included.
-
-
-
A2.1: But it also helps break down stereotypes and humanize people who may be different based on the outside view.
-
This is hard for some . Sometimes lack of experience breeds lack of understanding. Ss should have this experience!
-
-
-
Yes indeed! Some of the benefits are far reaching! https://t.co/rt71mdD4VX
-
-
A2.1: But it also helps break down stereotypes and humanize people who may be different based on the outside view.
-
Yes! We need to see others as PEOPLE and not sterotypes or groups or attributes https://t.co/KLkd3gdShc
-
-
A2.1: But it also helps break down stereotypes and humanize people who may be different based on the outside view.
-
-
Q3 How can we purposefully solicit input from and listen to voices that are typically not heard?
-
A3: Ask. You have to make Ss feel welcome at the table. Teach Ss to include and ask their peers who are being overlooked.
-
Equally important that it breaks the normalcy bias that too often exists
-
I think first we need to identify what voices we are overlooking and examine why..then we can figure out how to outreach
-
Yes! People in positions of influence have to be fearless in learning/tackling ideas existing on/beneath the surface.
-
So many times Ss feel undervalued. Told to listen and comply day after day. :( Need to change that culture too!
-
A3) When you design S-driven classrooms (), the "who" ceases to matter; Ss engage, collaborate, invent, solve problems as one.
-
Yes! Best part of my day was hearing 1 S ask another, "What do you think?" My Ss love to share their ideas.
-
A3: Need to actively seek it out. For ex: make a point to call parents and ask ?s of less engaged families
-
A3: Ts should expect input from all. Sometimes Ts subtle cues are interpreted by Ss as reasons not to participate
-
-
A3: Easier to raise Q about inclusiveness as the teacher. Privately ask Ss who may not want to bring up in front of whole class
-
YES! LOVE THIS ENOUGH FOR ALL CAPS! Student driven + Student Voice = Winning! https://t.co/apknZXXfR3
-
-
A3) When you design S-driven classrooms (), the "who" ceases to matter; Ss engage, collaborate, invent, solve problems as one.
-
Q3: Making sure that there are a variety of *safe* ways for Ss who are introverts or extroverts to share their ideas
-
-
A3: Utilize every moment to build relationships first. Then ask questions about how we (together) can make spaces more inviting.
-
A3 Voices of privilege can make deliberate practice to Amplify & Attribute so input is not lost or co-opted.
-
So true. Speaks to the need of knowing each of your students...I was the quiet student, often felt forgotten https://t.co/FFKyEgURLV
-
-
A3: Easier to raise Q about inclusiveness as the teacher. Privately ask Ss who may not want to bring up in front of whole class
-
A3: If they want to in front of class, allow them. But also understand how hard that is + sadly can lead 2 more exclusion for the S
-
You are speaking my language matter most! I teach a whole 5 week class to Ts on this topic!
-
Also speaks to the need to not react instantly to squeaky wheel. Need to gain 360 degree perspective
-
Yep! We have to provide multiple opportunities and a variety of ways to respond
-
Great idea, Ss listening to each other + sharing is always the best way https://t.co/9Zt9nDMLuv
-
-
Yes! Best part of my day was hearing 1 S ask another, "What do you think?" My Ss love to share their ideas.
-
That is so awesome. Every district, every school, every classroom needs it. https://t.co/opvYAzSa0D
-
-
You are speaking my language matter most! I teach a whole 5 week class to Ts on this topic!
-
-
A3 don’t know if recent story of how women staffers gained greater voice in White House is true… Amplify & Attribute was strategy
-
We have an advisory board for our student services dept - parents literally have a seat at the table.
-
-
Q4 When creating assignments, especially projects, how do you ensure all students can successfully meet your expectations?
-
A4: All students need to experience success and see their progress, for projects assign groups and roles where this can happen
-
To get input from families, we have to listen to them, and provide avenues for open communication & idea sharing
-
-
Absolutely! And we have to understand we might be working to undo YEARS of not being included, Takes persistence & time
-
A4: Use data to drive assignments. Provide scaffolded supports. Recognize what your age level needs to succeed. Provide "stuff."
-
A4: Understand obstacles for some Ss like: internet/comp access, affordability of supplies, some Ss have more responsibility @ home
-
Providing stuff seems like a little thing, but can be HUGE to a child used to doing without, worried about posterboard
-
I agree. Scaffolding supports are key! https://t.co/V0xdfP7sTx
-
-
A4: Use data to drive assignments. Provide scaffolded supports. Recognize what your age level needs to succeed. Provide "stuff."
-
A4: Personalize the learning experience by letting students choose what they learn, when they learn, and how to share their results
-
A4 I think are one way that schools can ensure equal access to resources for all students.
-
Q4: interesting article in which writer says making expectations too exact can inhibit creativity https://t.co/gGBv9tQsKQ
-
We are very early in this discussion at my school - I want to pick your brain, maybe at ?
-
Sorry friends - I have to jump out of this chat and do some homework with my kiddo. Thanks for letting me learn with you tonight!
-
-
-
A4) Give Ss clear expectations ; then diverse opportunities to learn; let Ss choose how to learn & schedule their time.
-
G'night Ellen! Glad you were here
-
I may be crashing this party!
-
A4: Be aware that small things like pronouncing student's names correctly make a huge difference https://t.co/yfw2tETXAP
-
I’m not saying he’s right, only that it’s something we need to consider. It’s possible to be constricting.
-
-
And spelling a student's name properly!! So important! It says you matter or not. Same for my teachers!!
-
-
-
Q5 In what ways do you ensure you are including all learners when integrating technology into your lessons and assignments?
-
also looking for higher ed partner to help coordinate convo in VA w/ public & independent
-
Yes . shares ways to make projects more inclusive in her book "The Missing Voices in EdTech"...
-
Tech can be a great equalizer (accessibility tools) when used properly, but it can also further the divide when not used properly
-
She includes ideas about ways to create more flexible projects with open options and less rigidity.
-
I think we often assume "digital natives" know how to use all the tools... when some may not have ever seen them! I know we (con't)
-
(con't) had new HS Ss this year who had never touched a computer before. HUGE opportunity to learn content and tools
-
Also we must be careful about assuming - internet access, computer time at home, materials. Provide time to work together at school
-
A5: Teams seem to work well with quick activities like . For extended activities, I ALWAYS give in-class work space.
-
I like the distinction they drew in the article about expectations and beliefs. And how beliefs might be limiting
-
These are great ideas to use tech well and ensure equity! https://t.co/pRWe01GwTv
-
-
A5: Teams seem to work well with quick activities like . For extended activities, I ALWAYS give in-class work space.
-
A5 my school very successful recently in getting ‘stuff', have to match w/ mindfulness of roadblocks & barriers for students.
-
I've seen goal setting in many of the english classes on my hall this fall. It's exciting work! https://t.co/tEcPYpoxYk
-
It's amazing how many HS Ss already believe they can't for one reason or another - we can help them see that they can!!
-
A5 Recently identified keyboarding skills as major difficulty for ELL students. Same amount of tech time is not EQUAL for these kids
-
-
A4 Students need all prerequisites to be successful when working projects. They need constant & consistent positive reinforcement.
-
And even if they have seen them, many Ss don't know how to use them effectively or professionally.
-
Hey Doc! Thanks for jumping in https://t.co/4uqH3hSC3K
-
-
A4 Students need all prerequisites to be successful when working projects. They need constant & consistent positive reinforcement.
-
Wow! Last question for tonight Q6 Complete this sentence: To be more inclusive I will ______
-
A6: Be more aware! It is so easy to forget our privilege and unconsciously be exclusionary, even as otherwise very kind people!
-
A4: Scaffolding to provide support and rubrics for expectations. Building upon earlier projects maximizes independence
-
A6: Ask individual students what they might need to be successful in any space.
-
Yes. I this statement belongs a magnet! It's refrigerator worthy....maybe file cabinet worthy! https://t.co/Z28z2EW6CH
-
-
A6: Be more aware! It is so easy to forget our privilege and unconsciously be exclusionary, even as otherwise very kind people!
-
A6 To be more inclusive I will listen as much as I talk, if not more.
