#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Good evening and welcome to #LearnLAP We are happy to be here with you tonight. We will use a Q1/A1 format. Please introduce yourself and tell us where you are joining us from.
I'm Paul Solarz, a 5th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois and author of #LearnLAP.
Thankful to have @_AmandaFry & @_SeanFry as moderators tonight!
Q1: When thinking about student voice, we think about empowering students. What practices do you incorporate into your class/school to ensure students voices are heard? #LearnLAP
A1 starting implementing 1:1 conferences for a few minutes with one of my 2nd grade classes; I only see them 1x/wk for 40m so these times are precious #learnlap
A1: Allowing choice in demonstrating understanding allows students to use their passion to drive their learning. This allows them to have a vested interest in their learning. #LearnLAP
A1 #LearnLAP
I have have started using digital assessments and feedback forms more to elicit Ss ideas. That way even the quiet Ss can add their opinions and thoughts with less stress.
A1: I set up a Principal's Advisory Council that meets with me to discuss school issues. Great way to talk informally with students about what they want from their school. I learn so much. #learnlap
A1 starting implementing 1:1 conferences for a few minutes with one of my 2nd grade classes; I only see them 1x/wk for 40m so these times are precious #learnlap
A1: A student leadership team, from which to gather ideas, keep pulse on the school climate is something my MS principal does already. @MSprincipalCW#LearnLAP
A1: I start by just talking to my kids. Getting to know them and build relationships and trust. Kids feel more comfortable sharing their voice when they know there is someone out there who wants to hear it. #LearnLAP
A1: I try to offer choices and lots of open-ended responses that put students in the events of the past. While we do have some very objective questions, I also want to make sure my students have opportunities to creatively display what they know! #learnlap@ERobbPrincipal
A1- My Sup and I started a Leadership Council with students. This has been eye opening and together with the Ss on the council we are putting action steps in place that will not only improve our school but also expand Ss voice beyond those in the council #learnlap
A1. Use @Flipgrid a ton which i the best #studentvoice tech tool around!
Students just created a new desk layout, then voted on layout for the room. Albeit traditional, they are owning it.
Employ a lot of choice in assessment!
#LearnLAP
Q1: When thinking about student voice, we think about empowering students. What practices do you incorporate into your class/school to ensure students voices are heard? #LearnLAP
A1: Love using Google Forms for feedback from students who may not speak out or advocate for themselves normally. If they see results from the questions/comments in the forms that could lead to in person advocacy #LearnLAP
A1 Gwmius hour, passion projects, PBL options that include product and process choice! Get input from students on what and how they want to learn! #champforkids#LearnLAP
A1. In our circle of discussion time, Ss can bring forth their voice and choice to the topics of discussion to the group in the circle or if they prefer on a 1:1 basis. #learnlap
A1: Student voice & choice in classroom environment- arrangement of seats, organ of classroom library, etc.; also student involvement in creating assessment rubrics #learnlap
Q1: When thinking about student voice, we think about empowering students. What practices do you incorporate into your class/school to ensure students voices are heard? #LearnLAP
A1: Listen. The kids want us to know and understand them, so lots of times it's just about quieting myself down long enough to hear them: conferencing, class meetings, being available outside is class time all help. #LearnLap
Q1: When thinking about student voice, we think about empowering students. What practices do you incorporate into your class/school to ensure students voices are heard? #LearnLAP
A1: I have informal lunch groups with students where I get to find out what they like and don’t like and what they’d do differently #LearnLAP ...and play
A1: I set up a Principal's Advisory Council that meets with me to discuss school issues. Great way to talk informally with students about what they want from their school. I learn so much. #learnlap
a1b never underestimate the power of an informal conversation at lunch/recess/hallway to find out what can be better. I've started asking Ss what their ideal school day would look like...interesting responses #learnlap
A1: provide Ss with voice and choice. Implement teambuilding, class building, morning meetings, have Ss write “What I wish my Ts knew.” #LearnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A1: Offers lots of choices on how Ss interact with content. Often the content/standards are provided, but how we experience the content and share our learning can vary! #learnlap
Q1: When thinking about student voice, we think about empowering students. What practices do you incorporate into your class/school to ensure students voices are heard? #LearnLAP
A1. We had Ss complete a S Voice survey. The information will be used to develop focus group questions. The information will be used to take action on improving our school. #LearnLAP
A1: Allowing choice in demonstrating understanding allows students to use their passion to drive their learning. This allows them to have a vested interest in their learning. #LearnLAP
A1) I relinquish more & more control over to the kids yearly. I couldn’t have done it overnight. It takes time. I incorporate the kids in the assessment rubrics for input. They choose partners for learning ops. They are empowered to question. #LearnLAP
a1b never underestimate the power of an informal conversation at lunch/recess/hallway to find out what can be better. I've started asking Ss what their ideal school day would look like...interesting responses #learnlap
A1: letting students know their voices matter, means letting them know their problems matter. Their concerns and issues are valuable just like they are. If something matters to them it matters to me. #learnlap
A1: For math one way is to validate all approaches. I love the reaction when I say “There are 3 ways to do this- you 3 will like the first one, Justin will like the 2nd one, everyone else will like the 3rd one” and I’m right. They know I listen to how they think! #LearnLAP
Q1: When thinking about student voice, we think about empowering students. What practices do you incorporate into your class/school to ensure students voices are heard? #LearnLAP
Q2: Collaboration is a significant part of the 21st century skills. How can we continue to keep up with the technology students use with each other to encourage collaboration in meaningful ways in the classroom? #LearnLAP
so powerful to hear they actually do love to learn...just not exactly what we deem important. asking what they wish they could learn about in school has been fun too! #learnlap
A1 choice is a huge part of the picture of what we have moved towards. Valuing conversation and ooffering flexible authentic community oriented tasks. #learnlap
A1 After Reading LLapirate last year, my class became full of Ss voice. GiveMe5 from LLaP gave my Ss an opportunity I share their knowledge with Ss who wanted to know more. We are almost getting to our No T talk day hoping this class can do it! @PaulSolarz changed me #LearnLAP
A1. Informal conversations are powerful. As long as you take action to amplify S voice. We also have a Knights of the Round Table (S advisory group) #LearnLAP
A1- Ss also "Reset" at the end of the day- they talk about what went well and what they can change- It used to be my agenda- now it is theirs- they are so much more involved! #learnlap
#learnlap A1 Both of our Indiana US Senators, Todd Young and Joe Donnelly have spoke with our Ss. They allowed students to ask questions of them. Great opportunity for our students to question their leaders and participate in civic engagement.
A2: Ask students! They are the experts here. Practices like school town council allow students to share and keep lines of communication open. #LearnLAP
A2 Keep an ear and eye to your #PLN to learn about new advances in #edtech. Listen to students and when giving choice of tools always include "other." They will surprise you with what they know. #LearnLAP
A1:
Student choice. We have students on our SIC. Ss are presenters at all honor roll assemblies. I ask for feedback on lessons. We vote on things in class. Can still do more. #learnlap
A2 Incorporate tech where it makes sense. I am still trying to find tools that allow purposeful interactions. Collaborative Google Slides for a Brain Dump were fun this year to try. #LearnLAP
A2: That's the gret thing about Google... students can collaborate on projects and writing. They can share and critique. They can exchange ideas and give feeback #LearnLaP

prob the most meaningful bc of the authentic-ness...they don't think you are fishing for a "correct" answer as in most of the rest of the day #learnlap
A2: technology is a tool. Sometimes it’s not necessary. Sometimes it is. Lessons need to drive our tech not the other way around. Keeping up is a full time job. I just hope to hold on for dear life. #learnlap
A2: We need to use what they use. You can use Instagram and Snapchat in meaningful ways to communicate school initiatives. Use @flipgrid to model learning as well as help them develop public speaking skills. Teach digital citizenship while focusing on standards. #learnlap
A2: Google, Google, Google & share, share, share! I love the sharing capabilities, the comment(s) feature and the ability to work on a task in real time, together! #learnlap
Q2: Collaboration is a significant part of the 21st century skills. How can we continue to keep up with the technology students use with each other to encourage collaboration in meaningful ways in the classroom? #LearnLAP
A2 Twitter is certainly a good place for info on great tech available. I think we should pick a few tech tools to teach S's to give them some background knowledge and they may teach us some new tricks too #LearnLAP
A2: Even though we are a 1:1 classroom, I love pairing them up to work on a digital assignment together - @Desmos is one of my favorites for this because some activities can be a little challenging, but they are more than capable with a small amount of peer support #LearnLAP
Q2: Collaboration is a significant part of the 21st century skills. How can we continue to keep up with the technology students use with each other to encourage collaboration in meaningful ways in the classroom? #LearnLAP
A2: technology is a tool. Sometimes it’s not necessary. Sometimes it is. Lessons need to drive our tech not the other way around. Keeping up is a full time job. I just hope to hold on for dear life. #learnlap
A2 ask them what they are using; and watch what they are using (esp if you have BYOD); we definitely need to be modeling the right way to use these platforms, otherwise we leave the teaching to whatever adults they are watching use them #learnlap
A2: By asking our students how they think we could use it in our content. Students love the challenge, and they love that they are not being punished for using something they are having fun with! #learnlap
A2: New rule this semester - it's not done 'till it's your social media worthy... then empower them to share it out! Lots of fun with short videos and GIF in ELA this spring! #LearnLap
Q2: Collaboration is a significant part of the 21st century skills. How can we continue to keep up with the technology students use with each other to encourage collaboration in meaningful ways in the classroom? #LearnLAP
A1: I have ss blog. It’s been an amazing experience so far. Sometimes they have a choice how they post-video, pic, writing, sometimes not. Still new to it, but can’t wait to really develop it for next year! #LearnLAP
A2: Padlet and Google Products allow sharing ideas and collaborating so simple! Had Honors students write a group research project together on Slides and Docs before. Super successful. Difficult for them but very worth it #LearnLAP
A2: Students can use tech to take collaboration to the next level. What was once done by oneself, Ss now have the ability to work from anywhere #LearnLAP
A2 I visited a school who had their first grade students collaborate with other classes in the building on writing a story one word at a time. That could be one sentence at a time in higher grades and could be done across state/country lines! #LearnLAP
A2- It starts with having open and honest conversations with your Ss about tools they feel comfortable using and discussions on how to productively use them. If we are open to listening and then courageous enough to try something new Ts and Ss will be better off !#learnlap
A2. Incorporate technology for useful purposes in learning for Ss, with collaboration,to share different ideas, and look at different perspectives of projects done with comparable apps! #learnlap
A2: I think the key part of this question is ‘meaningful way’. We have many ways to communicate and they will continue to evolve. How can we and S use them meaningfully? What is meaningful? It could be different in each situation. #learnlap
A2:
I’m going to be honest, I feel like as far as tech use in schools, it’s like we’ve taken a differentfork in the road than our Ss have. I’m at a 1:1 iPad school, and I see very little intersect btwn ed tech & Ss tech. #learnlap
A2: ask others what they are using with their Ss to collaborate, connect with Instructional Technology Specialist, Ss may even have ways they’re using that we know nothing about! #learnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A2: Want to connect with students and keep up? Ask them questions, engage in conversations about the social media they are currently using. Then mimic those platforms using LMS, Google, etc. #LearnLAP
Q2: Collaboration is a significant part of the 21st century skills. How can we continue to keep up with the technology students use with each other to encourage collaboration in meaningful ways in the classroom? #LearnLAP
A2. Use the Google Share/Comment/Collab Google features as much as possible.
As for the element of keeping up with tech: Allow for authentic media creation as often as possible. Students should be creating media that they would want to share out with the world.
#LearnLAP
A2- It starts with having open and honest conversations with your Ss about tools they feel comfortable using and discussions on how to productively use them. If we are open to listening and then courageous enough to try something new Ts and Ss will be better off !#learnlap
A3: Service. There are always opportunities for developing character, giving choice, raising awareness, and helping others. Not much is better than that! #LearnLAP
A2 ask students to share how they want to present or explain their thinking.... encourage technology for creation. We have kids all the time say oh we could explain/show this using #Minecraft and they are always crazy engaged #LearnLAP#champforkids
A2 Keep up, keep LEARNING! You won't/shouldn't use everything but you SHOULD be veritale/flexible and adaptable then maximize with SOUND pedagogy. #learnlap
A2: they use the same tech we use (smart phones) - just know the apps they use and you’ve got ideas galore. Like Instagram = video creation. Of course they can and will work together especially if it’s creative.
#learnlap
Q2: Collaboration is a significant part of the 21st century skills. How can we continue to keep up with the technology students use with each other to encourage collaboration in meaningful ways in the classroom? #LearnLAP
We also use @hapara_team in our district, so using the workspace to collaborate with @Mrs_Brown6th on luminescence. 5th and 6th grade in groups and will create together. #LearnLAP
a3: We did our first #MDgiveBack day last friday - Ss helped at a Sr. Center, made bags for Children's Hospital, Blankets for shelters, and more #learnlap
A3: One of my goals for next year is to figure out how to engage my students with other students and classes across the country! Twitter fam: any partners out there?! #LearnLAP
We just completed a service learning project where all 84 students were allowed to choose how they wanted to be a part of the project. It was a beautiful messy perfect experience. #LearnLAP
A3: @BC_Schools is doing a #1bookread on #Refugee in which we are connecting with classrooms across the world via Skype and connecting with the author. We are also relating the internationals stories of the book to local experiences of our communities. #LearnLAP
A2: If we want a true student led learning environment, we must be open to student input as to the collaborative tech tools they are familiar with. Let students lead and the result will astound you! #LearnLAP
Q2: Collaboration is a significant part of the 21st century skills. How can we continue to keep up with the technology students use with each other to encourage collaboration in meaningful ways in the classroom? #LearnLAP
A3: Just finished "Day with a purpose" where students identified community needs and then created a plan to address them... AMAZING what they can do when empowered! #LearnLap
A3- We are exploring creating a civic awareness team that will discuss how we can embed lessons on being social responsibility in what we tech all Ss , Promoting community service work, respectul debates, looking at issues at from all perspective a few other strategies #learnlap
A2 I think continuing to talk about the digital citizenship. Hanging a positive online presence and leveraging that as an opportunity to learn is key. #LearnLAP
Q2: Collaboration is a significant part of the 21st century skills. How can we continue to keep up with the technology students use with each other to encourage collaboration in meaningful ways in the classroom? #LearnLAP
#learnlap A2: Let Ss lead Ts. Give them the freedom to bring their tools into the learning experience, to be assessed in "their" terms. Let them know the goal.....ask them if they can find suitable means.....and be open to hearing what they suggest.

A3: try to make connections around the world so Ss learn about different cultures, traditions, beliefs, perspectives. Allowing them to connect to Ss around the world lets them “see” how different/alike & appreciate differences/similarities. #LearnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A3: Just finished "Day with a purpose" where students identified community needs and then created a plan to address them... AMAZING what they can do when empowered! #LearnLap
Here is how we do #MysterySkype in our classroom: https://t.co/WBXhdTDnJN
We've recently discovered cities across America, Canada, Germany & Chile. Have a few more amazing destinations to go! My Ss love learning about Geography & Problem-Solving thru Mystery Hangouts! #LearnLAP
A3: Service-learning projects like our knitting club. When kids will knit a baby hat to save a preemie's life and write a note of empathy and love to its mom, you've created global awareness of the warming kind.

A3: context outside the building - to other district schools, the family, the community, the region and beyond. So important. How? Videos again.
Sharing stores. Places. Pictures.
#learnlap
A3: I teach in a fairly diverse school and within my own classes I just focus on bringing in Ss’ experiences wherever I can, sort of normalizing the process of learning about other people’s backgrounds and differences #LearnLAP
A4: Giving Ss freedom to express their opinions in a safe environment and allowing Ss to demonstrate learning in different ways - classrooms should not demand uniformity in all aspects of learning #LearnLAP
A4: Students are able to hone in on their passions. When giving the chance to share their voice, they can use their their specialties which will add unique perspectives to the classroom community. #LearnLAP
A3: I think this is something we can always do more of. It begins with focusing on respecting each other and then exposing students to debate topics and ideals. We got to participate in @STOMPOutBullyng's Culture Shock recently. Great learning opportunity! #learnlap
A3- We are exploring creating a civic awareness team that will discuss how we can embed lessons on being social responsibility in what we tech all Ss , Promoting community service work, respectul debates, looking at issues at from all perspective a few other strategies #learnlap
A4: If every assignment you are grading is exactly the same 100% of the time, the students are not exercising their voice. Providing student choice boards is a way to let all students learn in a way that’s comfortable for them. #learnlap
Q4: We don’t want to create cookie cutter students; how does student voice provide a platform for enhancing student creativity in the classroom? #LearnLAP
A4: Students need the opportunity to ask their own questions and guide their learning; one example is through #geniushour or #passionprojects This is how they take charge of their learning and forge their path #learnlap

A4: student voice & choice allows Ss to take the lead in their learning. When they speak up for how they want to demonstrate understanding, they are more engaged & invested. It’s amazing what they come up with! #LearnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A3: Today’s kids are socially aware! And they connect and identify with global issues and used. Encourage those connections with easy cloud based tools #learnlap
A4: Student choice engages students in their passions and therefore they feel free to take risks and be more creative. This also allows students to see others and become interested in other things #LearnLAP
#learnlap A4: Student voice is not enough. Ts need to empower and encourage them to translate voice into actions. It's the feedback you give to their voice that matters most.
Q4: We don’t want to create cookie cutter students; how does student voice provide a platform for enhancing student creativity in the classroom? #LearnLAP
A4 Depends on how it is solicited. I am trying to broaden requirements to allow for choice and personalization. Tech or paper or other. Don't restrict, just focus them. #LearnLAP
A4 Find the weird, the offbeat, ask questions, dig deeper, change your view.
Teach Sss to look with NEW eyes. Be sure to teach with NEW eyes. #learnlap
A4: Students need to be able to connect their own experiences to their learning. Let the students decide how to show their learning and that will increase voice AND creativity. #LearnLAP
A4: Students need the opportunity to ask their own questions and guide their learning; one example is through #geniushour or #passionprojects This is how they take charge of their learning and forge their path #learnlap
Q4: We don’t want to create cookie cutter students; how does student voice provide a platform for enhancing student creativity in the classroom? #LearnLAP
I would love to team up with a few schools around the country next year to do some collaboration between students! I picture similar to our #pln but it’s a student learning network Any takers???? #champforkids#LearnLAP
A4: Student voice is creativity and automatic differentiation. Students all have innate talents, experiences, and passions - we need to discover, kindle, and promote what they love and embrace it in our classrooms. #learnlap
Q4: We don’t want to create cookie cutter students; how does student voice provide a platform for enhancing student creativity in the classroom? #LearnLAP
Q4: We don’t want to create cookie cutter students; how does student voice provide a platform for enhancing student creativity in the classroom? #LearnLAP
A4: Student choice engages students in their passions and therefore they feel free to take risks and be more creative. This also allows students to see others and become interested in other things #LearnLAP
A4. It allows our Ss to feel safe in the classroom env. to express their views of voice and choice for learning! It also allows for Ss to use their creativity to contribute to passion, or kindness projects geared towards others! #learnlap
A4: Having a voice enables students to find their passions, take risks, foster more relevance in their learning, cultivate curiosity and embrace the fact that they can learn from struggle. They will pursue what may be difficult if they know they will be heard. #learnlap
A4: In math, S can get to the answer in more than one way. Explain how your method is different from your friend’s method. We need to encourage divergent thinking. #learnlap
A4 Student voice opens up pathways to new learning. Capturing personal brainstorms before sharing out loud honors introverts and sparks divergent thinking. Once ideas flow and are celebrated Ss feed off of each other and know they are free to ideate. #LearnLAP

Q4: We don’t want to create cookie cutter students; how does student voice provide a platform for enhancing student creativity in the classroom? #LearnLAP
A4 Student voice allows students share their passions, things they would like to learn more about, even share how they feel about their learning in class #LearnLAP
A4- We will need to create a safe environment where Ss feel confident enough to take risks. We must embrace "different" and those who break the mold once we move away from how it is supposed to be and how it can be we are taking steps in the right direction #learnlap
A4: I give Ss choices in what they do every day - some encourage them to be creative with the math, some encourage them to be leaders by teaching their peers. It’s really great to see how they take on different roles as they come to topics that click for them! #LearnLAP
Q4: We don’t want to create cookie cutter students; how does student voice provide a platform for enhancing student creativity in the classroom? #LearnLAP
A4 Student voice opens up pathways to new learning. Capturing personal brainstorms before sharing out loud honors introverts and sparks divergent thinking. Once ideas flow and are celebrated Ss feed off of each other and know they are free to ideate. #LearnLAP
Q5: Problem solving and flexibility are challenging skills that students can sometimes struggle with developing. What can we do to continue to open communication as they work through these experiences? #LearnLAP
A3: Human Geography makes it easy. My job is to open their minds to the world. Not just in a poverty fantasy kind of way, but in a way that empowers students to contribute to things they are passionate about. @SraMcNeilly crushed this in Spanish and @LNCDigCit#LearnLAP
A4: If teachers want to connect w/ students we need to know them. Once you know your Ss give options so they can use their voice. Know they are valued in the community; contribute and own it #LearnLAP
More and more students can't identify a passion - it's scares me. I've made it my thing to work on creating spaces and time where they can work on that! #LearnLap
A4: Student choice engages students in their passions and therefore they feel free to take risks and be more creative. This also allows students to see others and become interested in other things #LearnLAP
A4: In math, S can get to the answer in more than one way. Explain how your method is different from your friend’s method. We need to encourage divergent thinking. #learnlap
A4 when ss have a voice, they advocate for themselves. They practice communicating needs, wants, learning. They don’t fall into the trap that everyone has to have the same answer. They learn that their learning is just as relevant and important as their peers. #LearnLAP
A5: Modeling failures of our own. Students respect when we admit our mistakes, but even better, they learn through us sharing our lessons learned. #LearnLAP
A5: Classrooms must be safe for failure so Ss can grow. Ss must be able to express their struggles and know with confidence that Ts will support them 100% #LearnLAP
A5: Give the students the time to reflect! Maybe it’s through journaling, blogging, podcasting, or Vlogging… Give them the chance to talk about it. #learnlap
Q5: Problem solving and flexibility are challenging skills that students can sometimes struggle with developing. What can we do to continue to open communication as they work through these experiences? #LearnLAP
A5 Give them time to develop by allowing purposeful struggle with support. Don't help them to be helpless. We need Ss to discover their own power to navigate unfamiliar waters. #LearnLAP
a5: we focus on the size of hte problem when Ss are stuck. how big of an issue is it if they make a mistake? Why are they stuck on? Are they struggling mentally or academically? #LearnLAP
A5 Do it more often. The struggle becasue they are sit and get. Teach like the play ground, let them be curious, let them explore... let them learn like KIDS! #learnlap
A4- it’s hard sometimes to let go. When kids do their own thing it is often not as in depth as I’d like. How do you make sure they are learning? Did a war project-2 groups did amazing work- learned and 3 groups were terrible-mixed up the civil war with A revolution! #LearnLAP
A5: The key to helping students develop problem solving and flexibility is to continue to ask higher level questions and resist the urge to go basic or give hints. Students will learn expectations #LearnLAP
A5 Give them time to develop by allowing purposeful struggle with support. Don't help them to be helpless. We need Ss to discover their own power to navigate unfamiliar waters. #LearnLAP
A5: provide continuous support and help them see that Ts are there to provide guidance IF needed but not to tell them what to do. We have to create a safe environment where risk taking is encouraged and grit is applauded. #LearnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A5: Giving Ss options are important as well as patience. Sometimes we need to rethink the peer model b/c it can be too intimidating to some Ss. #LearnLAP
A5: Model for them. Listen to them. Talk with them. Provide them with choices on how to communicate. Students can demonstrate learning outcomes differently. Capitalizing on their strengths and pushing them beyond what they think they are capable of leads to growth #learnlap
A4: Voice and choices definitely has its benefits. We try to foster that self-regulation and "i-can" attitude in our leaders by letting them lead whenever we can. #learnlap
A5 Sometimes it can be as simple as remembering To answer a question with a question. It puts the problem solving back on them rather than giving answers. #LearnLAP
A5: The key to helping students develop problem solving and flexibility is to continue to ask higher level questions and resist the urge to go basic or give hints. Students will learn expectations #LearnLAP
A5: Someone in a past Twitter chat told me to ask more questions, give less answers... I’ve tried to take that to heart and just ask them the question and let them go, maybe adding a few guiding questions along the way. They like to talk things out so that seems to help #LearnLAP
Q5: Problem solving and flexibility are challenging skills that students can sometimes struggle with developing. What can we do to continue to open communication as they work through these experiences? #LearnLAP
#learnlap A5: Offer re-assessment...continuously. As soon as you put a final grade on it, the communication has less incentive from the S's point of view. In fact, it typically stops. Let Ss "tap out" when they say they're done. As long as Ss keep trying, don't close the door.
Q5: Problem solving and flexibility are challenging skills that students can sometimes struggle with developing. What can we do to continue to open communication as they work through these experiences? #LearnLAP
A4: maybe, teaching Ss how to construct good questions and to create a roadmap that is meaningful, might be just as valuable or at least A prerequisite for this type of learning. At some point Ts need to be the expert in the room and be willing to questioned themselves #learnlap
A5: Often we lose the problem solving and creativity because we are in a hurry to get to the next thing. We need to go deeper and give time for depth #LearnLAP
A5: Empower. There are solutions out there, but we have to take the "gotcha", compliance, roadblocks down to teach them how to solve their problems - sometimes fail - but keep trying in a safe environment. #LearnLap
Q5: Problem solving and flexibility are challenging skills that students can sometimes struggle with developing. What can we do to continue to open communication as they work through these experiences? #LearnLAP
A5: We need to help kids learn how to learn. Give kids time to reflect. When they struggle, don’t immediately intervene. There is progress in the struggle. (inspired by @RBrittBCS & @ShakeUpLearning) #LearnLAP
A5- An important step is to make time for individual or small group conferences. This venue is less intimidating and less embarrassing for our Ss as we teach them to build confidence in a innovative self directed learning process #InnovatorsMindset , #learnlap
#LearnLAP A5 be honest about your own mistakes, model how to move and grow from them. Emphasize process over product, give multiple opportunities, create a safe space where students feel comfortable even when they failed spectactularly.
A5. As Ss are problem solving, reflection time is pertinent. Ss need time to digest and think about what they have learned to be able to ask questions. Working problems on sketchable notes, for understanding, journals, utilizing objects as parts of a whole to solve. #learnlap
If you've already read "Learn Like a PIRATE" & want to connect w/others at your grade level who are trying out the strategies, add your name to the #LearnLAP PLN: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv
A great way to collaborate w/others, connect classrooms, share ideas & answer questions!
A5 A5 a safe environment helps Ss take chances and make mistakes. Leading by example. Discussing growth mindset in class and school allows for independent growth and taking risks!#LearnLAP
#learnlap A5: Offer re-assessment...continuously. As soon as you put a final grade on it, the communication has less incentive from the S's point of view. In fact, it typically stops. Let Ss "tap out" when they say they're done. As long as Ss keep trying, don't close the door.

A5: Often we lose the problem solving and creativity because we are in a hurry to get to the next thing. We need to go deeper and give time for depth #LearnLAP
Q6: Allowing students to share their voice comes with great responsibility. What can we do to ensure that students understand how to use their voice responsibly while developing their personal selves? #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP
A6: This is not something that comes natural to the students. We must talk about Digital Citizenship and it cannot be a one day thing… Model, model, model! #learnlap
Q6: Allowing students to share their voice comes with great responsibility. What can we do to ensure that students understand how to use their voice responsibly while developing their personal selves? #LearnLAP
#learnlap For me to make that change, it required a change of priorities. Instead of assessing/valuing content and speed, I had to instead value mastery, growth, and the Ss themselves.
A6: Educate and then allow students time to explore and try it out. They will make mistakes, but if we put too many limits in place, we will prevent them from learning the positive power that can exist. #LearnLAP
A5: We need to help kids learn how to learn. Give kids time to reflect. When they struggle, don’t immediately intervene. There is progress in the struggle. (inspired by @RBrittBCS & @ShakeUpLearning) #LearnLAP
A5-give time to struggle with things. It’s hard sometimes not to jump in. And S need to learn perseverance. Many figure if they wait long enough we will either give up or give in and answer for them. #LearnLAP
Q6: Allowing students to share their voice comes with great responsibility. What can we do to ensure that students understand how to use their voice responsibly while developing their personal selves? #LearnLAP
A5: Step back and allow the struggle to happen; students learn more when they power through on their own...resist the urge to jump in unless truly needed for support; allow second chances to demonstrate learning #learnlap
Q5: Problem solving and flexibility are challenging skills that students can sometimes struggle with developing. What can we do to continue to open communication as they work through these experiences? #LearnLAP
A6: Model the digital citizenship we expect and make sure we teach it as they go. Help Ss to understand the impact of their actions and also make sure that kindness and empathy are taught all along #LearnLAP
A6 Working w/ elem Ss it is imp to scaffold the experience. We begin w/ paper slides & bulletin boards to practice sharing messages. We talk about audience w/ every assignment. We also explore the + & - of every tool so Ss can make the right choice. We model & practice #LearnLAP
I would agree but don’t just hand out the re-assess if it’s a retake. Have Ss develop a plan to study (I make them create at least 1 thing out of a 4 point study plan). They can figure out what went wrong and try to remedy it. Building in re-assessment is also key.
#LearnLAP
A6: This understanding for our Ss starts with the educators modeling, supporting and using teachable moments. Struggles will happen but support & understanding go a long way #LearnLap
#LearnLAP
I believe when students believe their voice will be heard and honoured then they themselves stop being cookie cutters of each other and start to be proud of their own ideas and not just piggyback off of the few that speak up . #LearnLAP
A6- We must teach them how to use their voices in an effective and social responsible way. Kindness, empathy, thoughtfulness etcc..essential in this process. #learnlap
A6: School is about "trying things out" before the "real world" it's where kids should make mistakes, adjust, and learn. When we force compliance, de-power, and fail to trust they never get the chance to learn to use their voices to be AMAZING. #LearnLap
Q6: Allowing students to share their voice comes with great responsibility. What can we do to ensure that students understand how to use their voice responsibly while developing their personal selves? #LearnLAP
A6 First and foremost we need to teach and model good digital Citizenship. We also need to teach EMPATHY to also help make them aware of the impact of comments #LearnLAP
A6 Be transparent, open, honest, and to the point about digital responsibility, acceptability, and citizenship. Can't beat around the bush with this one. AND YOU have to model in person and online. #learnlap
A6: My goal for the semester was to be really intentional about teaching routines/procedures - I think it applies here too in a way. We have to be clear that they have a voice, explain/model how and when to use it, encourage and celebrate when it’s done correctly, etc. #LearnLAP
Q6: Allowing students to share their voice comes with great responsibility. What can we do to ensure that students understand how to use their voice responsibly while developing their personal selves? #LearnLAP

Currently doing a shared write with my grade 3/4 students. I hold the pen (marker) but the ideas come from the Ss. So many Ss (dare I say all?) are contributing ideas! #LearnLAP@regieroutman
#LearnLAP A6 we must model that behavior and set high expectations for digital citizenship for ourselves. Particularly since so many adults in our Ss lives also do not understand dig cit. Even some educators don't.
A6: Talking to Ss is crucial. Share the expectations and discuss the reasons why this is so important for us and others. #learnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
#learnlap A6: Ask Ss to remember to talk about IDEAS and not PEOPLE. (--Eleanor Roosevelt.) This is not modeled well in our culture and needs scaffolding and reinforcement.
Q6: Allowing students to share their voice comes with great responsibility. What can we do to ensure that students understand how to use their voice responsibly while developing their personal selves? #LearnLAP
Q6: Allowing students to share their voice comes with great responsibility. What can we do to ensure that students understand how to use their voice responsibly while developing their personal selves? #LearnLAP
#MysterySkype has been very powerful in creating hunger in the students to want to learn more about the world beyond their city and classroom . I learn right alongside of the students .
#LearnLAP
Yes, Ts need to develop a process that offers both accountability and opportunity. That balance is what requires the professional's science and art. #learnlap
A6. First of all modelling comes into play with behavior, we want appropriate behavior for voice and choice and respectfulness of each other! If utilizing social media, going through proper guidlines for digital citizenship and being aware of consequences once shared. #learnlap
This is definitely a skill I’m working on! I love when I get to them a few minutes later and get a “never mind, I figured it out” or “I’m good, Kayla explained it to me” because that learning was so much more meaningful #LearnLAP
Q7: There is a lot we can learn from our students when they share their voice. What can we take away from these lessons to improve our schools and approach to fostering 21st century skills? #LearnLAP
A6 Make learning transparent and purposeful. Always state the LOs at the beginning of a Unit, and tests are modeled on those. If we want them to have a voice, we need to show that we are a partner in learning with them. #learnlap
A7: Don't just say we want 21st century learning environments - actually follow through with this and truly give Ss platforms necessary to express their creative thought! #LearnLAP
A6 Digital citizenship is important with lots of reminders and examples. We also need to let kids make mistakes, so we can guide them back from the mistakes. I teach 5th grade and refer to everything as when you get to middle and high school this will be So important #LearnLAP
A7 Recognize the students for their strengths, celebrate their knowledge, allow them to teach others INCLUDING teachers about the topic,tech,etc... at hand. #learnlap
A7: Be vulnerable. Sharing isn’t easy, but it is important. We need to be respectful to others when they share too! We need to practice what we preach when it comes to this. #LearnLAP
Q7: There is a lot we can learn from our students when they share their voice. What can we take away from these lessons to improve our schools and approach to fostering 21st century skills? #LearnLAP
A7 Don't focus on the facts, focus on helping Ss learn how to USE those facts in meaningful and creative ways. It is not about the What anymore, it is about the WHY and HOW. #LearnLAP
A7: The one thing that I haven't really gotten into but I know Ss voice is big on is Gaming. If we can gamify some of our learning opportunities, our students will grow and be all in #LearnLAP
A7 Provide a human centered approach to our learning which makes lessons relevant. Honor the iterative cycle and allow for plenty of time for Ss to imagine, play, create, share and revise. #LearnLAP
Follow the students lead.Ask questions . Learn from them.Lose control. The students will always be one step ahead of us and that's okay. Reach out to other teachers as well to see what works well . I learned about #Flipgrid from Twitter and love it fir collaboration . #LearnLAP
A7. By providing voice and choice, we can stay up with trends and maintain student engagement. Without engagement and buy in, there is VERY LITTLE deep learning. #LearnLAP
Q7: There is a lot we can learn from our students when they share their voice. What can we take away from these lessons to improve our schools and approach to fostering 21st century skills? #LearnLAP
A7 listen, slow down, remembering it’s about them, not the curriculum or next unit. Be willing to camp out if S see/need something from current content. #LearnLAP
A7: The one thing that I haven't really gotten into but I know Ss voice is big on is Gaming. If we can gamify some of our learning opportunities, our students will grow and be all in #LearnLAP
A7: We need to listen to their voices just as they listen to ours. I learn more when I let them talk; my job is to listen and listen really hard #LearnLAP
A7: We can’t make changes if we aren’t aware of Ss thoughts. By listening to what Ss say, we show them that their voices can be heard. When we acknowledge what Ss are sharing- they’re more likely to collaborate & help come up with ideas. #learnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A7: Covey's habit of "interdependence" stays with me. What we can do together is always greater than what is done alone. A learning community is a community where everyone must have a voice and collaborate in order to meet the mission. #LearnLap
Q7: There is a lot we can learn from our students when they share their voice. What can we take away from these lessons to improve our schools and approach to fostering 21st century skills? #LearnLAP
Check out the great list of moderators we have coming up for #LearnLAP! (Many topics still to be determined.)
Let me know if you'd like to take the helm one week! :)
A7: The one thing that I haven't really gotten into but I know Ss voice is big on is Gaming. If we can gamify some of our learning opportunities, our students will grow and be all in #LearnLAP
A7. Ss do have a voice and need to share it. With so many changes occurring in the world, our Ss need to open up and talk and not keep things bottled up inside for a healthy social-emotional state of learning. They too, can help solve problems in the world! #learnlap
A7: My class has gone through changes, even just this semester... Ss should own their learning and it needs to work for them! Scary as it is, I give an anonymous Google Form periodically, take the comments, and adjust where I can. They know I read every word. #LearnLAP
Q7: There is a lot we can learn from our students when they share their voice. What can we take away from these lessons to improve our schools and approach to fostering 21st century skills? #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A7 ultimately, the Ss are able to truly take the lead and help shape their own learning. They learn how to give meaningful feedback, how to respectfully help one enough, to listen to one another. I think voice coupled with choice builds confidence and self-advocacy.
Don't do anything for a student that they can do for themselves.Teach students not to THINK for somebody else as it robs them of a chance to create a neutron pathway in the brain.Set up scenarios that intentionally ask students to be flexible, and problem solve.#LearnLAP
A7: Students need their learning to be relevant and they need to understand the "why"; we need to listen to students when they share theoir voice #learnlap
Q7: There is a lot we can learn from our students when they share their voice. What can we take away from these lessons to improve our schools and approach to fostering 21st century skills? #LearnLAP
I love the use of "human-centered" here... Need to remember that these students are HUMAN and not IDENTICAL ROBOTS who regurgitate the same information and understanding. #LearnLAP
Q8: Based on your learning tonight, what is one thing you can take away to try before the end of the year to help students engage with 21st century skills? #LearnLAP
A7 When we let Ss run with something and they are excited guide if need be, but let them Run because soon they will be flying! Just because it is different than we thought doesn’t make it any less important. This happened last week and I was amazed! #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP
A7: We need to realize that our schools are for the students. We need to create learning opportunities and learning spaces that foster curiosity and allow students to pursue what they are passionate about. Encourage creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. #learnlap
A7-Ss are always telling us what they need, one way or another; we just have to be paying attention. If we focus on attending to their needs we can follow their lead... #learnlap

Q8: Based on your learning tonight, what is one thing you can take away to try before the end of the year to help students engage with 21st century skills? #LearnLAP
A8: provide an avenue for Ss to share opinions and suggestions, via google form, that Ts can read and reflect on to make adjustments and/or improvements #LearnLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A8- So much great ideas and info but 1 take away to use tomorrow is that I will make a point to have a few individual conversations with Ss and ask them how we can do better as a District. #learnlap

A1. I’m late to the party but thought I would join in. I offer students voice and choice. I also use the @Flipgrid app and @TodaysMeet to give students an opportunity to share when they may be hesitant to participate in class. #LearnLAP
Hey #LearnLAP and #NYEDChat
It was great to chat with all of you tonight. Please consider joining me
this Thursday at 9 Eastern for #waledchat. We will be discussing Growth Mindset.
A8: A takeaway from several threads has been different ways to build resilience... there is so much instant gratification in the world, there have been so many good comments on how to help show students to persevere - definitely my focus for the remaining days #LearnLAP
