I am Rachael Collins, eagerly anticipating the start of the school year tomorrow. I teach 8th grade social studies in CA and have a passion for cross content learning! #engsschat
Collaboration means working together, learning through shared experiences, and using each other's strengths to acheive a common goal. #engsschat#engchat#sschat#collaboration

A1) Collaboration is working together on a common goal, bringing in strengths of each individual, in order to make meaning or a product together. #engsschat
To me, collaboration implies building learning experiences together based on the expertise and experience of two or more teachers. Then you multiply the impact by including the librarian. #engsschat

Q2: How does cross content collaboration enrich student inquiry?
“Inquiry is the dynamic process of being open to wonder and puzzlements and coming to know and understand the world.” (Alberta Focus, Trevor Mackenzie Dive Into Inquiry) #engsschat#engsschat
A1. Collaboration requires individuals involved to work towards a common goal with a desire to be engaged in the process, through the highs and lows of the task. #engsschat
A2: So much of our world is interconnected. Knowledge of history enhances our reading; current events informs are ethics and scientific pursuits. The more our Ss know, the more they should be taught to question/seek knowledge. #engsschat
A2) Cross content learning amplifies with an inquiry approach because students make connections to themselves, to literature, and to the elements of the world around them. Learning can take on deeper meaning! #engsschat

A2 When students observe collaboration in action, they begin to appreciate the enhanced impact on learning. Still, I wouldn't assume that they magically possess collaborative skills. #engsschat
It is our role to model and teach those collaborative skills, do this tandem with more than one teacher or more than one subject area and students will progress. #engsschat

Collaboration allows us to bounce ideas off of each other and get creative!
Some of my best work has happened in collaborative curiosity with a colleague! #engsschat

#engsschat A2 In asking students to apply new skills across multiple content areas we foster natural curiosity and give students freedom to process new information and make it their own!
A3: Looking at common literarcy skills and goals is a great place to start. Connecting content to achieve those skills falls into place. I always love the connection between literarture, psychology, and history. #engsschat

A2) The convergence of multiple areas of study allows students to bring in their areas of expertise and wonder making meaning of the topics in personal ways. An atmosphere of questioning heightens the learning. #engsschat

A2 Life is hardly divided by curricular areas. Collaborative learning is one way to deal with the cacophony. I also like the potential of using collaborative techniques to view the human experience through multiple lenses. #engsschat
Hi, guys: joining a little late.
A2) I think cross content collaboration shows Ss connections between topics, e.g. the historical context in which a book was written. The social studies don't live in a vacuum. #engsschat
Yes, teaching Ss that their reading, writing, and communication skills transcends a specific course can empower them to make connections across all their areas of study. #engsschat
A3 Currently collaborating with my ELA partners on The Professor & The Madman by @simonwwriter Focus of unit: Should racism be considered a type of mental illness? Lots of inquiry into Civil War era medicine. #engsschat
A2 It gives students a chance to transfer the information they learned and see how it can be used, analyzed and synthesized in multiple ways #engsschat
A3) To place emphasis on wonder and questioning, I found students to be most supported when this learning is framed around an essential question, and then doing activities that give time to reflect on their background knowledge and teach key vocabulary in the EQ. #engsschat
A3 Teachers model collaboration in the writing of units. Each contributes content expertise, while relying on combined skills in creating a product for the students. #engsschat
Probably not an 8th grade appropriate book. Some graphic language and scenes, including a genital mutilation. I got parent permission before starting the book with my 11th graders. #engsschat
Yes. A shift from the teacher asking questions to students asking questions. Takes lots of practice, but starting the year off with the mindset will set the stage. #engsschat
A3) Shared vocabulary connections are a good place to start. I teach a history of science unit, and we begin with words that are important to both fields. For example, evidence, inquiry, and investigation are all words that can connect the two fields of study. #engsschat
A4 Our school has a medical careers theme, so we almost always look through the lens of a practitioner in that time period. We read both fiction & non-fiction to support activities in Hist & ELA #engsschat
A4) Our 8th grade students spend the 4th quarter in cross content inquiry with ELA. EQ: How have people survived injustice throughout US History? Literature, primary sources, direct instruction, everything connects under the umbrella of Civil War to Civil Rights. #engsschat
Oh my goodness, YES! This is day 1 of week 2. We're doing our first QFT on Friday. We've already done one provocation. The Ss did great!!! I'm trying to teach the #InquiryMindset structures early so that they become routine. #engsschat

A4: Human and civil rights - so many great books to study in an ELA classroom and so much history/sociology to cover in a SS classroom. Reading a book like "Half the Sky" would be great content for cross-curricular learning. #engsschat
Wow, thank you for sharing. Perfect example for the connection between the hard and "soft sciences". Yes, I have had a science teacher joke about this matter. haha #engsschat
#engsschat A3 I always start with the KUD and backwards map to the skills and specific content students need to know, understand and do for success in SS, ELA, SCI, Math and then embed as many of the 5 C’s as possible.
A5: An obstacle I have is always time. Finding time to collaborate with other teachers, build lessons, and shared students can take a significant amount of time to implement effectively. #engsschat
A4) Coming from a history and science perspective, I'd like to do a cross-curricular unit on the idea of revolutions: political, scientific, industrial. #engsschat
Annie, interesting graphic. I appreciate the emphasis on the workplace and career planning. During preservice, our district met with Kate Kinsella. She stressed the importance of teaching academic language scripts for workplace use just as much as for collegiate use. #engsschat
A5 Hardest part is finding collaborative time. We spend too much PD time w the Hist department and would benefit from working closer w our ELA peers. MSs are better at this than HSs. #engsschat

A5 The biggest problem is when the written curriculum don't match. Collaboration in my bldg involves a little flexibility and the will to succeed. #engsschat
Truth! Our ELA and SS departments met together at the end of the year. It was a nice starting point that needs to undoubtedly continue more frequently this year. #engsschat

Yes! Time is so tricky. Technology has made sharing resources easier, which has helped, but I wish there were more hours in the day to collaborate with so many amazing teachers in other disciplines. #engsschat
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, lean on your librarian to help overcome challenges of time and communication. Start small with a 3-person team & a 2-day lesson. #engsschat
A5) Our teams of teachers have made great progress in the area of writing instruction. That is a major win! Next piece, the desire to plan and teach together. I am so lucky to work with 2 ELA teachers who share this interest with me! #engsschat
Q6: With a focus on empowering student choice and voice, brainstorm ideas for creative summative assessments/performance tasks. (Please share any pictures of student work, rubrics, resources etc.) #engsschat
Having Ss create podcasts about inquiry topics to share research and knowledge gained is a great way for multiple teachers in various disciplines to assess Ss knowledge and skills gained. #engsschat
A5) Time has to be the biggest obstacle to getting some good cross curricular units going. Technology has been my go-to as a time saver. In my district, the Google Drive is our collaboration ground. #engsschat
A6) An 8th gr. unit on injustice - Civil War & Civil Rights allowed for more student choice. They could answer the EQ in an essay, art, or film. This was well received by students and served as an authentic reflection. Link to presentation here https://t.co/zcljL2RebP#engsschat
Have you seen this graphic about student podcasting? (Trying to remember who shared it on Twitter. Apologies for forgetting.) https://t.co/JMvF4tItcl#engsschat
A6) Examples of some student artwork that came from the question, "How have people survived injustice throughout US History?" Beautiful and impressive but I may be a biased source. #engsschat
LAST QUESTION
Q7: What is a realistic next step that you could take in collaborating with another content area colleague or an action item to bridge the subject areas together within your own classroom? #engsschat
A6 Currently trying to plan some historical fiction narrative/storytelling in my social studies classes. Teaching Africa in geography when ela is reading long walk to water. Using ela rubrics to assess writing in ss #engsschat
