Hi everyone, I am a pre-service social studies teacher and M.Ed student at The Ohio State University. This is my first time joining the chat, and I could not be more excited! #OHedchat
Q1: When tech is used with purpose and intention it can redefine what learning is all about. In what ways has technology redefined learning in your classroom/school? #ohedchat
A1: Twitter has redefined adult learning in our school. We had over 30 staff members complete our first twitter chat/book study over 5 weeks and have another 30 signed up for our new one that starts tomorrow! #ohedchat
A1: I personally have seen students get so excited about the opportunity to learn differently, have control over their learning, and have a voice in a way they've never had before. #ohedchat
A1: Tech redefines learning by becoming the process rather than the product. Ss use tech to share, explain, and present their ideas rather than create. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A1: High quality education, layered in with technology, and built on positive Teacher/Student relationships - refines what all schools should be doing.

Q1: When tech is used with purpose and intention it can redefine what learning is all about. In what ways has technology redefined learning in your classroom/school? #ohedchat
A1: I am student teaching at a school that is not 1:1, so the way that we use tech has to be creative at times, recently we have been working with our students to show how they can use the tech they are already using to become more media-literate, informed citizens, #OHedchat
A1: it extends the where of education taking place and increases he potential audience. It allows more tools/resources to be used simultaneously #ohedchat
A1: Tech has to be designed and used around solid strategies rather than hoping strategies will emerge from an abundance of tech. With that in place learning becomes much more individualized and intrinsically motivating. #ohedchat
A1: Having 1 to 1 tech has been such a resource in the classroom! Answers to students questions are always at their fingertips. They get to learn more about what they're interested in. #ohedchat
A1: Technology is a tool to utilize in teaching not the teacher. Technology breaks down barriers and helps teacher to free up their time to facilitate learning and lets the students take ownership while teachers become the guide for multiple paths to success! #ohedchat

Q1: When tech is used with purpose and intention it can redefine what learning is all about. In what ways has technology redefined learning in your classroom/school? #ohedchat
I know that we have some teachers who share articles/text for students through Google Classroom. Different students may receive different articles/text without everyone being aware #ohedchat
A1- Tech has leveled the playing field in the classroom. It has raised student engagement, accessibility, and allowed students to connect in ways that were not possible before. #ohedchat
A1: I think technology is almost effective when it gives ownership to students to drive their learning. It must be intentional, meaningful use of tech - when done well, its powerful! #ohedchat
It has helped reach the learners that are behind. By using speech to text, audio books as they can comprehend more than they can read, by using Flipgrid to show their learning. #ohedchat
A1: Being in a 1 to 1 classroom has been great. Students have so much more information at their fingertips now. Allows us to do so much more in the classroom. #ohedchat
A1: redefined expectations. When Ss and Ts have resources, as leaders & Ts we expect more. Everything from research to coming up w/ ideas and creativity #ohedchat
A1: Our big push in our building this year is to utilize tech for formative assessment practices. Allows for quicker data collection to drive instruction for all Ss #ohedchat
A1: Classroom tech continues to push the dimensions of our teaching and learning. When used with purpose, it has endless opportunities, possibilities. Needs to be more than a resource. Should be tool in a teachers (and S's) toolbox. #ohedchat
A1: I think technology is most effective when it gives ownership to students to drive their learning. It must be intentional, meaningful use of tech - when done well, its powerful! #ohedchat
Q2:With a new tool comes new chances for Ss to misuse the tool. How have you or your school taken a proactive approach to teaching students how to properly use tech? #ohedchat
Exactly. It needs to be infused. Students already know how to use the tech, but not always how to understand. When a teacher facilitates both; awesome motivation and growth happens! #ohedchat
A1: technology doesn’t replace the T, but emphasizes great instruction and out of box thinking. It can open doors and possibilities for differentiated instruction #ohedchat
A2: My MT and I set clear expectations for use of tech on day one and have consistently stuck to that plan. It's also nice to have a program like Dyknow that my school uses as an extra verification tool #ohedchat
A2: Ts need to model the proper use. Ss also need to be taught that making mistakes is allowed. Ts need to be present when new tech is implemented so Ss can ask questions openly. #ohedchat
A2 We are a #pbis school. On our school wide matrix we have a column specifically for technology this year. Lay out the expectations clearly and revisit as necessary #ohedchat
A2-Also important to remember that is Ss misuse tech we can't just take the tech away. We must provide chances for Ss to learn from mistakes and try again. We can make poor choices w/ paper and pencil too. #ohedchat
A2: We had the opportunity to work with a local business, through one of their outreach programs. Employees came into the classroom and spent two days discussing the responsible use of tech that is expected of them, and will soon be expected of ss, in the workplace #OHedchat
Q2:With a new tool comes new chances for Ss to misuse the tool. How have you or your school taken a proactive approach to teaching students how to properly use tech? #ohedchat
Q2:With a new tool comes new chances for Ss to misuse the tool. How have you or your school taken a proactive approach to teaching students how to properly use tech? #ohedchat
A2: I️ May be too open on this. But often times with new technology you must navigate the waters unrestricted (or else you may restrict learning ops) to discover what needs to be restricted. Trust the students then limit their access when needed or necessary. #ohedchat
Q2:With a new tool comes new chances for Ss to misuse the tool. How have you or your school taken a proactive approach to teaching students how to properly use tech? #ohedchat
A2: It all starts with having open and honest conversations with Ss about what it means to be a positive digital citizen and role model for others. It also involves discussing the consequences that come with misusing tech. #ohedchat
A2: modeling is key. Also, if T's put themselves out there with new programs, risk and even fail, that is powerful learning for S's. Teach resilience & learn from mistakes together. #ohedchat
A2; Just like any classroom tool, using it exclusively can do more harm than good. I think that building a lesson and using tech to enhance and compliment is the best way to help our students properly use it. #ohedchat
A2: Explicit expectations and clear measures of accountability. Every student hears the same message during the #1st3Days of school. Teach them the good, and the bad, that comes with the tool. Educate. #ohedchat
Q2:With a new tool comes new chances for Ss to misuse the tool. How have you or your school taken a proactive approach to teaching students how to properly use tech? #ohedchat
A2- Google has a program "Be Internet Awesome" https://t.co/DUsQ9wxUMi Digital citizenship will continue to be important as we introduce new tools in our schools. #ohedchat
A2: When I used Backchannel Chat with my Ss, I always monitored the discussion so I could redirect. Even muted individual students if I had to. They knew I downloaded transcripts of chat, too. #ohedchat
A2: like any new tool (tech or not) teach expectations and foster an atmosphere of mutual respect. Also, be aware of potential “pitfalls” of some tech options and educate yourself on internet safety. #ohedchat
I agree, Lori! Kids need a chance to explore w/ a teacher to facilitate and in an environment that is safe for exploration and potential mistakes.
#ohedchat
Exactly. Technology can add so much to our student's learning opportunities whether it is used as a tool or resource. It can truly broaden their horizons. #ohedchat
A2: We lay out clear expectations for proper use, model digital footprints, and teach digital literacy as a class.
What we do not do is take away opportunities for many students because of what a few students might do. We afford freedoms for responsibility. #ohedchat
We have to allow them to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes with our guidance (within reason). This ensures that we are not limiting their potential and we are taking advantage of teachable moments even if they are about life and not so much academic. #ohedchat
As we use our social media interns it is an opportunity to teach students how to use these tools correctly (mainly Twitter at this point). They will learn one way or the other -- let's model for them how it should be done #ohedchat
A2: First and foremost, we have to ensure the Ts know how to implement the tools. We need to provide quality PD to get them comfortable with it before sharing it with the Ss. #ohedchat
A2: Robin-LRC TA-IL, My LMS will demonstrate proper care, the consequences of misuse of devices, being on google accounts thru district, #digcit lessons, modeling for Ss how tech enhances learning. #ohedchat
Q2:With a new tool comes new chances for Ss to misuse the tool. How have you or your school taken a proactive approach to teaching students how to properly use tech? #ohedchat
A3: When I transitioned my Ss from one learning management platform to another, I expected some hiccups. Addressing them calmly, being flexible because we were all learning made it less stressful for all. #ohedchat
A3: Ss are immersed in tech & understand it like second nature. Ts must show that they are not afraid of tech, understand its importance and role & be on the cutting edge. #ohedchat
A3: Teachers need to embrace possibilities that they cannot comprehend... the industries of the future will be those that we cannot imagine, but our students will be the designers of... let them design the future & don’t fear the tools that they will need to utilize. #ohedchat
Mindset and how Ts react and interact with technology, is infectious. A T likes it, kids will like it. The Ss will take the Ts lead and react similarly. A T is the best role model for technology and its uses! #ohedchat
A3: No different than mindset and expectations of learning. The higher the expectations in regards to tech usage, the higher the learning outcomes. #ohedchat
A3: Tech must be intentional and purposeful. Don't use tech to use it. Use tech to enrich, empower, and engage S's with content. Be clear with expectations, model, and let S's take over. #ohedchat
A3: If teachers are excited about the possibilities provided by tech, and model how these resources can help our students, extend their learning, and stir passions, ss will feed off and respond to these attitudes, making them an integral part of our classroom community #OHedchat
Teachers set the tone for the whole classroom. If they believe in something then their Ss are more likely to believe too....in technology, in lessons and in students themselves. Teachers set the tone. #ohedchat
A3 Teachers set the tone for the whole classroom. If they believe in something then their Ss are more likely to believe too....in technology, in lessons and in students themselves. Teachers set the tone. #ohedchat
A3 As in the question - mindset is crucial. If not embracing, then tech will not enhance the lesson. However, if open to exploring the possibilities (and even being willing to not succeed sometimes) techn could take to a whole new level #ohedchat
I completely agree-when we as Ts assume that Ss can't use tech we are limited the possibilities-we must be okay w/ feeling a little uncomfortable and handing some control or all control to the kids #ohedchat
A3: Teachers need to embrace possibilities that they cannot comprehend... the industries of the future will be those that we cannot imagine, but our students will be the designers of... let them design the future & don’t fear the tools that they will need to utilize. #ohedchat
A3: I feel it’s based on the culture in the building. Leaders need to model a creative mindset where Ts & Ss can take chances and try using different methods. Building culture spreads to individual Ts #ohedchat
A3: Ts need a mindset that embraces new tech. Ts also need to see the new tools that tech brings to the classroom and furthers the learning of Ss. Teach how to adapt and create new possibilities. #ohedchat
A3. An open mindset w/ tech, utilizing it for proj., resarch, and learning, makes it easier for Ss to become more open to utilizing tech for acad. purposes. #ohedchat
A3: As a preservice teacher, my Ss are often more familiar with the tech I'm trying to use than I am. I try to always encourage them to help me use the tools better rather than not trying at all #ohedchat
A3: the teachers that participate in the tech exploration and model taking risks are the classrooms that excel the most when using tech. Creates a community mindset of growth and progress not perfection. #ohedchat
A3: The way a teacher talks about, interacts with and troubleshoots technology directly influences Ss’ thoughts and feelings about the importance and impact tech can make in their lives. #ohedchat
A3: I think it is important for the teacher to remember she/he doesn’t have to know everything about an #edtech tool to implement it. Sometimes, my students help me learn! It shows them that we are all learning from each other! #ohedchat
A3-The best mindset to have is one that is RESISTS the urge to say-"we've always done it this way"-When you're open to something new, the possibilities are endless. #ohedchat
A3-The best mindset to have is one that is RESISTS the urge to say-"we've always done it this way"-When you're open to something new, the possibilities are endless. #ohedchat
Teacher mindset sets the tone of the classroom and everything done within the classroom. Teachers need to be open to possibilities to allow st to see possibilities. #ohedchat
Love the piece on troubleshooting. I agree. When things go South, instead of giving up & hitting Plan B, troubleshooting shows Ss that the Ts is determined to find solutions #OHedchat
A3: Encourage students to see the possibilities that tech can have. If we bring positive and encouraging interactions with tech into the classroom than students will respond with the same. #ohedchat
A3 it’s more of a mindset on being transformational and knowing that we can’t continue to teach 21st learners with 20th century practices! We supposed to get them college and career ready! Careers that are in the 21st century!! #ohedchat
A3 so many hesitant teachers have said, “I was really impressed with my kids. I didn’t know what to expect. I just need to let them go a little more.” #ohedchat
A3: I ask my T's to be open and all in. If the T isn't open to growing and learning, frustration mounts. And I am referring to the students. (The teacher is the given.) Have the mindset, watch the growth. #ohedchat
A3: nonverbals typically show the true comforts or discomforts with technology. Awareness of actions and how to incorporate student experts can be a great way to be inclusive #ohedchat
Love the piece on troubleshooting. I agree. When things go South, instead of giving up & hitting Plan B, troubleshooting shows Ss that the Ts is determined to find solutions #OHedchat
A3: Technology is glitchy. When it does not work correctly, Tts #growthmindset in a perfect world should be to model “flexibility, moving from Plan A to Plan B”. Ss start to see the possibilities! #grit#perseverance#ohedchat
A3: Teachers model many things. Attitudes towards tech is one of them. If a teacher thinks the sky is falling when something doesn’t work, the kids become chicken little also. If a teacher is resilient, so are the kids. #ohedchat
A4: students have their own google drive accounts that connect them to different sites that allow for opportunities to enhance their learning! They need opportunities to explore their learning! #ohedchat
A3: Attempting new technology, risking failure to learn, and continuing to try...that is the perfect model for what is expected of students. A great way to build trust and a learning climate that all feel safe in. #ohedchat
A4: Most Ss are willing and eager to use new tech tools. They seek tools to help them be more efficient in what they're doing. It's an active pursuit. #ohedchat
A4-We are very focused on using tech to share our learning and gain feedback-Ss actively create and show their work using tech so they can get feedback and revise their thinking---that's active for sure! #ohedchat
A4. the Ss are coding on the ipads and designing cool pictures, which they can change and do things with in the prog., Reading proj, learning to type. #ohedchat
A4: Ss are currently working to seek out different news sources, as well as mediums for news consumption such as Twitter, Insta, even SC. We are also explicitly working with ss to actively sift through and use these sources towards, in this case, current event research #OHedchat
A5: It's our job to give S's framework and purpose with technology. With that in place, let them run. Don't be afraid to try new things that are relevant to instruction. Have S's share with each other to keep them engaged in processes #ohedchat
A4: We use Google Classroom in my placement as a way for students to share ideas and communicate with one another outside of the classroom. Encouraging them to use the tech to grow in their understanding. #ohedchat
A4-Today my first grade daughter's Skyped with an author-they were so excited to be able to connect with a real author and learn about the writing process in an authentic way---that's active!! #ohedchat
Love your focus on purpose! At the elementary level we work hard in our district to build students digital toolbox so they can decide what is the best tool for the job once they know their purpose! #ohedchat
A4: Students are active with tech by:
creating
communicating
seeking
sharing
collaborating
Incredibly important to give them the tools and let them think. Today's students want to solve problems and communicate...not be fed...#ohedchat
A4: When they are evaluating or creating using tech. Don’t know if there is a lot we can do with tech we can’t do without, just so many things we can do BETTER! If the lesson would suck without tech, it won’t be a good lesson with it #ohedchat
A4: our students @RushmoreAcad use technology actively to design, create, and provide functional products such as cell phone charging stations, T-shirt prints, stereo systems, as well as learning core content! #ohedchat
A4. the Ss are coding on the ipads and designing cool pictures, which they can change and do things with in the prog., Reading proj, learning to type. #ohedchat
This is so true---however, I want to make sure that my Ts know that sometimes they do need to try out the tech w/ Ss in order to discover the possibilities. #ohedchat
A4: Our students use technology to experiment with flipped classrooms, Skype across the country, film, record, and produce announcements and skits. The list goes on and on... #ohedchat
A4: In the LRC, we use tech for research, presentations, my LMS will collaborate w/classrm Tts to work w/Ss on any schl work; state, civil war, biography projects. #ohedchat
A5: I created a private Facebook account for teaching. Share stories of the classroom in a way that brings Ss work directly to Ps. Makes it immediate. #ohedchat
A5: Many times parents don’t actually know what goes on in class. Tech allows the walls to come down between home and school and school and world. Share what you do and parents will appreciate it. #ohedchat
A4: #ohedchat

#middleschool#technology
A5: Many of our successful home to school communications occur via Facebook posts and Messaging. Cellphones turn off and numbers change, but Facebook accounts stay consistent. #ohedchat
A5-One of my Ts shares Google slides w/ parents that serve as anchor charts from classroom lessons--parents can see exactly what Ss have learned each day- #gamechanger#ohedchat
A5: tech had been powerful in making me more accessible to families and students. Chat forums, websites with videos of lessons and even a cell phone number (google voice) #ohedchat
A5: Twitter is an excellent tool to strengthen relationships between Home and school by “getting” parents into the classroom and giving topics for dinner conversations #ohedchat
A5 We really try to communicate the story of our school through Twitter. Need to get much better about doing this on other types of SM as well. Also send our newsletters through smore #ohedchat
A5: Apps like Remind and Schoology allow for closer collaboration between ss, ts, and parents/families/guardians. Including ss' family and home support system into our school community is not only great practice, it is meaningful and valuable for student learning #OHedchat
We have had great success creating short videos (2 minutes or so) to share with parents. The videos gave them glimpses of things that occur during our days. #ohedchat
Yes! Good teaching is good teaching no matter the tool! We can’t get caught up in the sparkle of our devices and forget what we know about teaching well!
A5: Honestly...Twitter! When I was in the classroom teaching K-1 it would give parents a window into our classroom. Allows parents to start conversations with "I saw you do ___ at school today." rather than "what did you do at school today?" #ohedchat
A5: I think tech can be a great way to keep the parents involved in the classroom. Twitter, classroom websites, blogs, and others can be a great way to facilitate that teacher/parent relationship. #ohedchat
A5: We provide a digital newsletter, video clips of students in class and on the field, a weekly video message (from me), a facebook page, and twitter...
We are telling the real story about our school and the parents are up to date, engaged, and part of our community. #ohedchat
A5: @Seesaw connects the students to each other and the families to the student’s work/announcements! It is digital profolio that is fun like Facebook! #ohedchat
A5: I enjoy being able to invite parents/guardians to our google page, so that they know more about the day-to-day happenings of our classroom #ohedchat
A5: Our Twitter & Instagram accounts that are linked, @FoxLrc. Communication about weekly lessons by grade level, Book Fair information, Special News can be found here. #ohedchat
A5: We are beginning to make more of a connection between school and home with the help of technology. Many Ts invite parents to GC, share personal web sites, and post to various social media platforms to open the lines of communication. #ohedchat
A5: I have a classroom FB for the parents to follow. They love it and are actively commenting on photos of the S's collaborating, creating, and learning together. I also go live on the FB page for parents to see the magic as it happens. #ohedchat
A5: It has changed the game! Easy to keep parents up to date with information, share Ss work, and collaborate with apps like @Remind and @Seesaw and LMCs like @Google Classroom! #ohedchat
A5.1 We can’t forget the access that Social Media brings- multiple platforms (Twitter, FB, Insta, Snap) to share great things that are happening in school! #ohedchat
A6-Recently our first graders are having a great time using @ChatterPixIt and are using this tool to share the theme of the books they're reading! #ohedchat
A6: @EDpuzzle for integrating questions w/i video, Backchannel Chat, @PearDeck, @padlet as an interactive bulletin board. So many great tools! #ohedchat
A6: So many great resources out there, but I've really enjoyed being introduced to EdPuzzle! Great way to keep students engaged while utilizing media in the classroom #ohedchat
A6: I love using @polleverywhere in all my classes. Allows students voice to be heard at all times in a way that in very safe and not intimidating. Students love being told they can use their phones too! #ohedchat
A6: I love Nearpod and EDpuzzle, Plickers and Kahoot are great review tools as well. Newsela is another resource that can be used to support students and their work with reading and literacy #OHedchat
Thank you for joining @SmalleyTech and me!
#ohedchat will be on Thanksgiving break next week but will return on November 29th as @drneilgupta moderates.
