Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1) Excited to collaborate and share ideas with you today about mentorships. #gtchat
A1) Mentorships promote a personal connection. Provides a sharing of insights and knowledge from a mentor with similar interests while inspiring students. #gtchat
A1) Internships and Apprenticeships are formal on the job training whereas mentorships are relationships and guidance with a person who has expertise similar interests or similar challenges #gtchat

A mentor is someone with experience that helps another who is less experienced. It is a relationship. #gtchat

A1 I see mentorships as long term. As fluid. As more nurturing and about growing and coaching. Internships and the like are something like practice jobs. At least to me. Mentorships happen all career long! #gtchat

A1. Reading about the pitfalls of peer tutoring or mentorships this morning. Something we need to be aware of - this was excellent. #gtchathttps://t.co/Ex2RnZ4Stk
The benefits are that we get to BOTH be learners. That we get to find others who can not only help us grow, but get to know us in the process (both ways). #Mentorships can (should?) develop into lifelong friendships. #gtchat
A2 #gtchat because mentorships are based in relationships, one of the benefits can be supporting a gifted learner in social and emotional areas bringing a sense of identity and self-acceptance.
A2) Mentors, when properly matched, serve as role models. They can stimulate intellectual discovery, bring excitement to the learning process, and provide understanding of the student’s passions. #gtchat

A2. Mentorships can sometimes provide the connection between the classroom and the real world. Application of learning and teaching to a real-world context. #gtchat
Oh absolutely! Or might not have offered at school either, in the way of academic, cognitive, or social emotional support.

A2 #gtchat because mentorships are based in relationships, one of the benefits can be supporting a gifted learner in social and emotional areas bringing a sense of identity and self-acceptance.
A3) Intellectually and artistically gifted students can benefit when paired with masters in their fields such as artists, musicians, scientists, business professionals and scholars. #gtchat
Mentors serve as an amazing bridge for a gifted child's asynchronous development because they can meet the kid where they are at intellectually to help them grow and flourish #gtchat
Additionally, mentorship can often give focus to a gifted student who struggles because they have so much energy and interest, but lack the maturity to figure out the best plan of attack #gtchat
Q3) Professional mentors show students what their interests and talents can look like in the 'real-world' and open their eyes to new possibilites and extensions/versions of the original interest. #gtchat
A3) They may be the only people who really see a kid and meet them where there are. They may be able to offer specific avenues of exploration based on expertise. #gtchat
A3) Mentors can reach through to students in ways that a teacher or parent cannot. This may be life skill, S/E, college/life planning, or anything else where they put up barriers between themselves and Ps or Ts. #gtchat
It absolutely DOES! Because it's a relationship. It's a person connecting w/another person over shared passions & interests. The G2e mentee feels SEEN, perhaps for the 1st time! #gtchat

A3) Often, RURAL gifted students struggle to find role models or even someone to talk with about interests in their local communities. Mentors, even virtual mentors, can offer a lifeline cognitively, and social emotionally. It's HUGE for isolated Ss. #gtchat#ksedchat#ruraled
We are already half way through our chat! Thank you for sharing so many inspiring thoughts about mentorships! Please remember to use the #gtchat hashtag to participate in the conversation. #gtchat
out of order, I'm late to the chat! A1: Mentors are formal, but MANY times informal relationships that lead to profound growth for BOTH the mentor and mentee. It's a symbiotic relationship that's like a type of parenting, but focused on teaching a trade, art or passion #gtchat

A3) Mentors can provide a level which the school may not be able to provide. Sometimes a student can be more comfortable talking with a trusted mentor than a parent or teacher #gtchat
It's been a while, but this topic is near and dear to my heart, ESPECIALLY because it's SO critical for #girlsinSTEM and even more so with out gt population, with heightened anxiety and perfectionism! Mentorship is EVERYTHING for them! #gtchat
A4) As with participation in any academic intervention, the gifted student should be an integral part in deciding if they want to have a mentor and will be a willing participant. Then, needs should be discussed first. #gtchat
Same for students with disabilities or from backgrounds of poverty. The students you are speaking about have always, historically, had access to this and kids from poverty/ non-white kids, or kids with disability have not. Let's advocate for access for all kids! #gtchat

A4) Understand the level of support your mentee needs before approaching mentors. Will they communicate in person, VC, etc? Can the mentor commit? #gtchat
No argument here. I subbed at a mod-poverty school this spring w/high non-white pop. Absolutely they need more mentorships & I hope I was one the short time I was there. #gtchat

A4) Ss need guidance in this category, because they lack the skills and prior experience to know how to seek out a good mentor. Parents and teachers need to aware that mentorship is important and willing to do the footwork to start the relationship. 1/3 #gtchat
This may mean the teacher, themselves, taking the student under their wing, or getting the parent in contact with someone they know would be good for the student. 2/3 #gtchat
The parents and teachers need to view themselves as coaches because seeking mentorship is a life skill as we move through the various seasons of our life and career. 3/3 #gtchat
As a chat for GT students, we generally speak of these kids, but that doesn't negate recognition that ALL students should have their needs met. #gtchat@NAGCGIFTED#giftednessknowsnoboundaries

A4 I truly believe that finding a mentor is an art and a science. You can't interview for one, but you can cultivate relationships that can grow into one. #gtchat
A4. There's a bit of NZ research about mentors coming from the same culture as the student. I think this is important or at least they should have a very good understanding of that culture and how they learn best. #gtchat
A4) Special consideration should be given to availability, enthusiasm to mentor, expertise, and personal compatibility with the student when choosing a mentor. #gtchat
A4) Mentorships should be monitored over time to ensure that the student is benefitting from the relationship and progress is being made towards initial expectations. #gtchat
A4) For kids who can't find a mentor who is able to give what is wanted, it can be possible to treat a person's public teachings as a form of mentorship. It doesn't create the same connection, but it can create a sense of vision of what is possible and how to get there #gtchat
A5) Resources available to locate mentors can be found in surprisingly simple places … local parent groups and schools or universities, local businesses, institutions supporting the arts, and professional organizations. #gtchat
Beyond this great Twitter #PLN (the more you connect, the more you can connect with) we can use FB communities. We can look for blogs/podcasts on topics. Talk w ppl who know things. They'll help locate! #gtchat#Mentorship
A5. Putting a call out to the community can create an amazing list of possibilities. You never know who's out there or who they are connected with. Creating a school database from there can be valuable. #gtchat
Also, create a spreadsheet of families' jobs/hobbies. Keep this over years and see what connex can happen in your own community. #mentorships#ruraled#gtchat
A5) Locating mentors for gifted students can tap opportunities available within existing gifted programming such as educators and professionals in magnet schools, AP/IB programs, or governors’ schools. #gtchat
A5) Sometimes mentors find you and you put them in your back pocket until the right kid comes around. A mentor from the Civil Air Patrol connected with me in LinkedIn today--->back pocket. https://t.co/ydOvlBEZoN#gtchat
Also, create a spreadsheet of families' jobs/hobbies. Keep this over years and see what connex can happen in your own community. #mentorships#ruraled#gtchat

A6) Mentoring relationships can be differentiated by considering the specific needs of a student, where parties to the mentorship are located, expectations regarding ultimate goals to be achieved by mentoring, and time constraints. #gtchat
The trouble with being a kid who has so many strengths she can do anything is that she can do anything. Where to begin? How about #mentorships!
Thanks @gtchatmod for this reminder!
#gtchat#ksedchat#elemchat
A3) Multipotentiates specifically benefit from mentorships by honing in on a vision of their future self that is guided by a mentor with similar lived experiences in their areas of passion. #gtchat
A6) Mentorships can be classified as one-on-one relationships that revolve around in-person communication, online mentoring via electronic communication, or group mentoring that involve a mentor and multiple mentees. #gtchat
A6 Kinda like friendships, you can have mentor relationships in all aspects of your life. I have music friends, I have G2e friends. They don't always overlap. Same with mentorships. #gtchat
And after a few years? And when a community of teachers shares resources? Beyond the most powerful knowledge offered in the 4 walls of school! #mentorships#gtchat
A6 Mentorships exist for all seasons and aspects of life *and* careers. Too often it's formalized, forced and ultimately ineffective, but a real relationship between a novice and an "expert" can bear real fruit. #gtchat
#gtchat Missed the chat but didn’t see this resource mentioned so thought I’d share. Mentoring guidebook free download from Davidson Institute https://t.co/cm22eGCw0q
Yes. When I was a beginning teacher, I was "assigned" a mentor who was great. I also sought out 2 others. Lifelong friends now, even if we don't talk every day. I feel I have about 4 other mentors right now. #gtchat#mentorships

A6. I also think it’s worth stating that when adults mentor, that makes students more likely to pursue mentorships in the future as both mentees and mentors #gtchat#modelcitizens

Thoughts and takeaways - always start with the student. Involve them in choosing mentors. Mentorship is a partnership - learning and teaching goes both ways. Connect with your community to create a database of resources/people. #gtchat
Final thought: While mentees often are the considered the greatest recipient of the relationship, I say being a mentor is one of the greatest & profound roles in my life. #gtchat
@msheathervaughn True, it's like when kids have to interview for the first time, or make a presentation, sometimes the nerves get to them. But do these enough times and it all become habit. #gtchat

Our next chat will be on Thursday August 2nd at 8E/7C/6M/5P US and Friday 3rd August at Noon NZST/10 AM AEST/1AM UK. Our topic will be “Improving GT Parent-Teacher Communications” #gtchat
In schools, we talk about lifelong learning, but #mentorships is what lifelong learning looks like. How are we currently helping Ss seek & develop these relationships for themselves -- EVERY SINGLE DAY? #gtchat#ksedchat#ksed
