Really not much to love about seasons changing. My allergies act up and I have chores to look forward to: shoveling, mowing, raking..
I do like the new food choices that become available tho! #scitlap
Q1 Science & Engineering practically are 1 ribbon of the NGSS. The first one is Asking Questions & Defining Problems. What are labs or activities practice this SEP?#scitlap
I am Karla from NAS Lemoore CA. I teach 7th grade NGSS Integrated and a Gaming elective. I love not having to use my AC and only ceiling fans. I can sit outside and read. #scitlap
A1 I do lots of little engineering challenges, teach a unit on understanding science misinformation and sometimes have students do paper towel testing. Just figuring out how to do a controlled experiment bends their brains. #scitlap
Google around a bit on it. I attended a session at a conference. Simple yet effective. Ss write as many Qs as they can about a prompt, then rate as open or closed. Could also do testable/not testable for science. #scitlap
A1: One thing I do is have my freshman manipulate growth of a garlic clove eleven we are investigating cell division. They are totally charge. It is a relatively simple experiment but some really struggle. A good experience for them. #scitlap
A2 Yep, student models, like their questioning, needs teaching. I do whiteboarding and chart paper (gallery walk). I comment on what is good and what can be improved. Like models need labels/captions. #scitlap
A2) I do use simulations that students can manipulate to show their learning in some units. I would like to spend more time creating & building in class but takes so much time. Ss really enjoy designing water filters then compare to a larger system. #scitlap
The power in modeling I feel comes from the prediction and then reflection. Showing Ss their conceptual understanding before and after can be powerful (so I've been told). #scitap
A2: I use the word “model” constantly and at the beginning of the year we talk about what a model is/can be. I terry to incorporate as many different kinds of models into my units as I can. #scitlap
A3 Not sure if there was a question there but I'll just chat about CER. I like the word "justification" instead of reasoning. Students don't seem to get reasoning. They just restate their evidence. #scitlap
A3) my entire grade level team is using claim, evidence, reasoning. I find Ss get claim & evidence but reasoning is harder. My curriculum does a good job of spiraling this through a unit and creating a new problem at the end for ss to apply knowledge #scitlap
A3 I agree about reasoning, it is tough for students. I asked my team to use the same language and asked ELA teacher to help with reasoning. - #scitlap
I have really been focusing on CER over the past few years. I really like it, and you can apply it over and over again. I found a great lesson on "What is a sandwich"? I will see if I can find it! #scitlap
I agree that they struggle with reasoning. But I actually find with my students that they struggle more with providing and citing evidence. They just don’t understand (read “haven’t had practice”) reporting numbers/data in their writing. #scitlap
Q4) I’m combining 2 SEPs here: Analyzing & Interpreting Data and Using Mathematical & Computational thinking. How do you practice these. Do you work with math partners? #scitlap
Agree, I often get "look at my graph" or "the data supports my claim". I teach 8th grade and have sentence starters to try and get them in the right direction. #scitlap
A4 For me analysis is mostly reading and interpreting graphs. Students still struggle. If we can graph data and use it as evidence we are doing good. #scitlap
A4) Math is my first love. However, I’ve yet to bring in more data interpretation in my labs. Future Focus. I do spend time teaching Ss how to graph on iPads in different apps. I do have them crest graphs without iPads at least once. #scitlap
A4: At the HS level teaming up with math is difficult because Ss have different levels of math and different teachers. To meet this SEP I really just try to have students working with all kinds of data—data they collected and graphs and tables from other sources. #scitlap
A4 I'm not sure if I officially use the Math and Computational Thinking SEP, but I know I've had some great science/math conversations with my math team-mate this year. #scitlap
I am spending a lot of time practicing graph skills this year. Students are pretty weak at interpreting them, as well as making them. Hope to grow this skill over the year! #scitlap
Q5) last 2 SEPS: planning & carrying out investigations and Constructing Explanations & Designing Solutions. Do you see as only as a hands-on lesson or do you do other lessons. #scitlap
Me either, but also like infographics! My wheels are turning. I like this idea. I am trying to think what that would look like. Graphs and tables they make and research on a topic . . .

A5: I do usually think of these as hands on. At least that is how I mostly meet these SEPs in my classroom but I would think PBL and case studies would work for this as well. #scitlap
A5 I eliminated my scientific method unit this year. Going to try including this SEP with other labs I already do. Still not sure how this will work out. #scitlap
A5 I'm not really answering the question here, but we had conferences tonight and my room was check full of a big design project....so many parents were impressed at how non-textbook/notes we are focused. Hands-on with a reflection piece is the way to go #scitlap
I have tried Piktochart. Just dabbled when I was trying to figure infographics out. I found that my students like Canva. I give them a choice. #scitlap
I ditched that unit over five years ago. I would rather have students spend that time doing the science and learning about the process in situ. That is how I learned it best. #scitlap
Thanks for joining in. I am actually in the hospital keeping my elderly uncle company. Luckily I had this idea ready. Let’s all follow Tracy. Keep sharing lessons you find at our hashtags. #scitlap. Ps I’m tired of spell check changing this to Scotland. Lol!
