Hi Wendi!! You are my HERO this week! Truly made my week so much better! !
Q1: What are the challenges of regularly integrating global education into classrooms and coursework beyond social studies?
A1 School schedule constraints make it difficult to move beyond telling a “single story” - limited time for expanded lessons.
Glad to see you here tonight!
Time is probably the biggest difficulty for SS teachers
A1 Time, time, time, and time. Plus required standards with pacing guidelines. Have to be sneaky.
Hello! Level Up Village - based in Old Greenwich, CT. We provide enrichment to 100+ US schools
Hey, ! Hi, ! ! Good to be w/you all tonight!
A1 Finding ways to connect to pacing guides and standards in the curriculum! however, VERY important to do so!!
A1: Little preservice teacher development in global education until recently!
A1 Teachers might not be empowered to design their own curriculum....
A1: curriculum. Without it, what other obstacles would there be?
A1: I hear from many teachers that it is overwhelming - they don’t know where to begin!
Hello, my friend! So happy to be a part of your world and to draw mutual inspiration from you.
So true - time is the enemy of every school day https://t.co/RVC85X3JXz
A1 School schedule constraints make it difficult to move beyond telling a “single story” - limited time for expanded lessons.
A1: convincing teachers that global is not an add-on but a way to energize their curriculum!
A1: Time to co-plan & dig into standards to find the global connections that are there, but perhaps not always sought out
There is still little in my district! Very SAD! Thought @ pitching pd for my colleagues. https://t.co/Asn5AtXoLJ
A1: Little preservice teacher development in global education until recently!
A1: I think many schools rely on canned curriculum.
A1: I think it's even a hard sell sometimes to social studies teachers!
This is a big one https://t.co/wl1m6IyHoB
A1: convincing teachers that global is not an add-on but a way to energize their curriculum!
A1: Time is a constraint, both in the amount we have with Ss, and in schedule alignment for GHOs and the like.
Joining in late! Maggy from Houston. PK Dual Lang teacher & coordinator. Also moderator for ! https://t.co/D4BZ9pEfQK
Please introduce yourself/location/specialty
A1 when people don't see the value of global "beyond social studies"
So true. Very similar issue in pre-service teacher education: need to move beyond social studies
Brian Jones from Los Angeles area
Ken from Western Oregon Univ. college of education just arriving to
A1: Interdisciplinary planning: teaching area and perimeter-Moroccan rugs=Math+Lg. Arts+Social Studies https://t.co/HidHuPDcH0
: Time and lack of global awareness by teachers. Needs to be priority in teacher Prep/PD.
A1 time difference & ideas, although the intention may be sincere, it may fall through because school happens
This is a huge factor. Mindset is another--it's not my area/someone else will cover it/ it doesn't fit my content
Jim - middle school social studies teacher from Massachusetts
A1: Global education is found in the standards but it is disbursed reflecting the fact that global Ed cultivates a disposition!
A1 Changing the way I think about global learning. Wondering about exploring the world through common needs.
I agree, Precious! This is why I need my Twitter & school PLN. More brains = more connections
https://t.co/HstYfWv4gw
A1 Finding ways to connect to pacing guides and standards in the curriculum! however, VERY important to do so!!
A1: It's easy to say time, but collaboration is actually the big issue. Learning to use time in a way that works for all
or they're too afraid to try something that isn't in their pacing guides
A1: seamlessly coordinating with learning standards.
A1: so schedule, time, curriculum, subject areas...if we got rid of those?
A1: Biggest challenges are strict pacing guides and too much fear is seen as extra, not a way to get to standards.
A1 lack of resources, limited time, Not knowing where to find the resources & failure to understand it's meaning
A1: Connecting to students and teachers beyond timezones, along with connecting standards, and relevance to timely topics.
YES!! This is why I try to do this chat every week & connect w/like minded educators!! https://t.co/lUCiWnWKJB
I agree, Precious! This is why I need my Twitter & school PLN. More brains = more connections

A1 Finding ways to connect to pacing guides and standards in the curriculum! however, VERY important to do so!!
A1: This takes a lot of innovation and creativity from teachers! The website helps a lot https://t.co/OyP6OugeuH
Q1: What are the challenges of regularly integrating global education into classrooms and coursework beyond social studies?
True, Penny. Sometimes, Ts are our own worst enemies. We need others to push our vision https://t.co/aeU1FHlSIk
A1 when people don't see the value of global "beyond social studies"
A1 You need to be very determined and persistent and willing to go beyond the basics.
A1: I think it's less about time and more about finding case studies that integrate with global issues. This is what engages!
Agreed ! Often energy comes because students are more global than teachers realize
https://t.co/bDbZxQBWXd
A1: convincing teachers that global is not an add-on but a way to energize their curriculum!
A1: Rethinking curriculum in general--why are there so many divisions btw content areas? https://t.co/9l9Pl22joj
So true. Very similar issue in pre-service teacher education: need to move beyond social studies
Q2: What do you think can be done to increase the global education buy-in from teachers in a scalable and replicable way?
I agree. Collaboration leads to empowerment and confidence to step outside comfort zone.
Hi Brian! Thanks for joining! How did go?
A1 I am wondering about collaboration through a common need where students/teachers/families team to "solve"
Possible inability or acceptance to rescale our own identity/issues
A2 Teacher-leaders are great agents for sharing info with colleagues on how global ed. can be included in everyday curriculum
A1: convincing people that it's not complementary to stem education it's part of stem education!
A2: Connect teachers to authentic experiences that make global connections to what they are already using in their classrooms.
By the way, tweeps, I am Leslie in Mty, MX, and I am specialized in environmental science and biology w/ a side of leadership.
It starts w/us! We need to lobby legislators, school boards, & our PD depts 2 advocate 4
Absolutely. And many regulars exemplify this in a phenomenal way! https://t.co/UvnkT9spRm
A2 Teacher-leaders are great agents for sharing info with colleagues on how global ed. can be included in everyday curriculum
A2: Important for them to understand that they can start slow - one project at a time and integrate. Don't start from scratch!
A1 So many synchronous & asynchronous tools can be used to open our classrooms globally= strong connections w/families.
A2: Make it"Do-Able". Avoid compliance by demonstrating the benefits and celebrating accomplishments https://t.co/TYf07pLVlD
Q2: What do you think can be done to increase the global education buy-in from teachers in a scalable and replicable way?
A2 Suggesting teachers globalize one unit a year-this way not too overwhelming.
AGREE!! PLN & connex = tremendous boost to our Ss learning. We were honored w/ this week! https://t.co/9qokBakJiz
YES!! This is why I try to do this chat every week & connect w/like minded educators!! https://t.co/lUCiWnWKJB

A1 Finding ways to connect to pacing guides and standards in the curriculum! however, VERY important to do so!!
Sad, but true. Sometimes, just one colleague can be your partner to make change happen https://t.co/a5KWeKPUx4
This is a huge factor. Mindset is another--it's not my area/someone else will cover it/ it doesn't fit my content
A1: Add standards to the common core?! Or dump CC for creative, authentic learning, stop hindering great teachers.
Hi - Lottie here from .. nice to be able to join today :)
A1: teachers also reeling from new standards.Ironically this is best time 2integrate global-rethinking the curriculum anyway!
Hi ! Global English teacher from Northern Cali here late.
it's enriching, meaningful & memorable for Ss. There may be an emotional connection that will encourage growth.
Hi Gaby!! :) Welcome to You will be hooked!!
Great to "see" you again!
A2: I don't want them to buy-in, I want them to have ownership. I need to think on how I get them there with .
This is a great question - One good story can cover many subjects
A2: pt. 2 This can be done through pd, travel, resource guides, peer feedback, you name it! Some resources .org
Empower teachers. Use bldg experts to design cross-curricular lessons to highlight global ed school to school.
Oooh. Think I might lurk here. Was jotting notes about global classrooms accts. global pbls?
A2: Show other Ts how it works. Invite them to classrooms where it is working.
A2. Showing teachers how integrating global themes into their teaching can be part of the workflow
A2: Teachers often don't feel like they have the content knowledge to teach globally
A2: once you are talking scalable and replicable, nothing.
A2 provide network of GE resources - interdisciplinary,inquiry-based, authentic, & can be demonstrated to tie to standards
A2: Model successes & be transparent about what we do in our classrooms--show what's possible. https://t.co/TSa58orN1F
Q2: What do you think can be done to increase the global education buy-in from teachers in a scalable and replicable way?
A2 ask for input, lesson creation, stop with the "canned" and then compare self reflective growth
Fear is the worst F-word in ed. We have to push back on it by creating small innovations & successes https://t.co/NBOvX1z08b
A1: Biggest challenges are strict pacing guides and too much fear is seen as extra, not a way to get to standards.
A2: Depends on what is meant by scalable/replicable. Nation-states ubiquitous today; not all the same https://t.co/5UJvrHKRQv
Q2: What do you think can be done to increase the global education buy-in from teachers in a scalable and replicable way?
Yes & then we offer opportunities to learn alongside each other.

A2: I think other teachers encouraging colleagues to join in projects and such helps a bit.
A2: Have other teachers model how all subjects can be taught through a global lens. Global education teacher mentors!
This is a great point - are there tools you have in mind?
True. So much of globaled meshes with CCSS thinking. Makes sense to revamp simultaneously.
Excellent point, --It’s not about agreeing but participating in experiences! https://t.co/ZkrGaTQRS5
A2: I don't want them to buy-in, I want them to have ownership. I need to think on how I get them there with .
Tell us how you really feel, Jennifer! haha Hey, how are you doing? :)
glad to be here to support a great educational cause!
I like this idea too. 1 idea, 1 step at a time you begin to experience the excitement that emerges authentically.
A2: but teachers can learn new things with their students. Never heard of Banda Aceh until I was asked https://t.co/O2CzqBQYAa
A2: Teachers often don't feel like they have the content knowledge to teach globally
unfortunately so true! But, there are many skills based global ed ways they can teach w/o deep content knowledge
Great point--invitation is always a great catalyst & impetus for buy-in. Expands everyone's boundaries/ ideas.
That's why we are all here. Blazing trail to make it less scary for colleagues. . https://t.co/PF2beOO6FF
Fear is the worst F-word in ed. We have to push back on it by creating small innovations & successes https://t.co/NBOvX1z08b
A1: Biggest challenges are strict pacing guides and too much fear is seen as extra, not a way to get to standards.
A2- seeing things students accomplish, create & produce always helps with they buy in
Great thanks—good to see you at the ! Now we need to get your 200 colleagues on board...
A2:Start w/one addition & look at transdisciplinary skills:Crosscultural learning, perspective building, digital literacy, etc.
Yes I prefer to ask what teachers will invest , not whether they buy-in
https://t.co/rAK7Yf2HR6
Excellent point, --It’s not about agreeing but participating in experiences! https://t.co/ZkrGaTQRS5
A2: I don't want them to buy-in, I want them to have ownership. I need to think on how I get them there with .
A2 If I set it up, other teachers will do, but I'm not sure it would be sustainable without my impetus.
Aww, so kind to say, Shanna. https://t.co/F3LWivouYI
So true, Maggy - VIF is a goldmine! https://t.co/MGLK90Nivw
A1: This takes a lot of innovation and creativity from teachers! The website helps a lot https://t.co/OyP6OugeuH
Q1: What are the challenges of regularly integrating global education into classrooms and coursework beyond social studies?
A2: exposing teachers to a whole new discourse: a whole new way of thinking outside of the specific discipline!
Great point, Heather. Small successes are the key. They're easy to replicate and contagious https://t.co/OpnSZNKwh9
A2: Important for them to understand that they can start slow - one project at a time and integrate. Don't start from scratch!
Q3: What resources exist to help teachers of economically disadvantaged students integrate global into their classrooms?
I am transitioning to the position of Instructional Coach next year! A greater reach coming up!
Glad to hear you find our resources useful, https://t.co/wxEQPamyxe
A1: This takes a lot of innovation and creativity from teachers! The website helps a lot https://t.co/OyP6OugeuH
Q1: What are the challenges of regularly integrating global education into classrooms and coursework beyond social studies?
"Think outside the discipline," I like that!
A2: Global education it's hard to brand! It's skills and knowledge but ultimately the cultivation of the disposition
There’s another good answer—get people with passion to lead the charge! https://t.co/FMve6mg46f
I am transitioning to the position of Instructional Coach next year! A greater reach coming up!
A3: Connecting to issues rather than geography - issues are the same. Also, tap into diverse experiences of community.
Love this! https://t.co/gSDJE0nGfe
A3: Connecting to issues rather than geography - issues are the same. Also, tap into diverse experiences of community.
A3: in many cases, their own communities. Over 60 languages spoken in Denver schools. That's
https://t.co/M84z0zG9QE
Q3: What resources exist to help teachers of economically disadvantaged students integrate global into their classrooms?
Maybe needs to be defined more clearly first?
I feel you on this one, so much I think we could do, but I need more "me" to get it all done.
A2 if admin don't buy into this idea very few Ts will venture out ,Ss can't change the world if they don't learn w/ it & from
I agree... perhaps because we lack a really good universal definition.
A3- skype with classes and ppl from throughout the world while they are in class- bring the world to them!!
A3: Try to build community partnerships or bring build online partnerships if you have access: https://t.co/qmQwcI3Uwc
We are going to discuss this on an upcoming chat in April - how do we better brand ? https://t.co/rqLzbM2fxT
A2: Global education it's hard to brand! It's skills and knowledge but ultimately the cultivation of the disposition
All of us need models. We have to see what's possible https://t.co/4lP9OGB8LT
A2: Have other teachers model how all subjects can be taught through a global lens. Global education teacher mentors!
There are so many free technologies and resources; cost shouldn’t get in the way of connecting.
A3: One of the best resources is2have teachers engage in programs like teachers 4 global classrooms and then activate schools!
A3: Libraries, esp in community are also excellent as they're connected, and often draw a globally mobile population
Indeed! It's one of the first things Ts ask me when I mention
A3 My class does a lot with email and Google Slides.
A3: Teachers who love them and know that the efforts taken will pay huge dividends in their learning! https://t.co/0X3AF3aWC3
Q3: What resources exist to help teachers of economically disadvantaged students integrate global into their classrooms?
I have learned so much more traveling the world then three degrees combined! Technology can help give students experiences
A3: That's a tough one b/c internet connectivity/device availability not a guarantee everywhere.Does always need it?
Great chat tonight! Hard to get my schoolwork done!
Agree. One teacher sharing the experience can inspire others to try, too. The Global Classrooms is here!
A3: Important to avoid deficit thinking. Global citizenship includes resistance & resilience, local issues are global
This is one of my all-time favorite strategies. So many teachers want/need this connection https://t.co/fJzZAo5EGx
A3- skype with classes and ppl from throughout the world while they are in class- bring the world to them!!
A3: I find this question tricky. Why do teachers of disadvantaged kids need different resources?
Students are passionate about things that already mean something to them, too.
A3 We actually just wrote snail mail letters to students in Taiwan. Cool stuff for 3rd graders.
A3 Or am I reading this too literally?
absolutely! Many different interpretations/ perspectives of out there!
A3 school based tech, BYOD, open school access,
A3: Look for the global in the local opportunities. Most communites are rich. Including Eco-dis.
I love the idea of subject integration, and this spinning rock unites us all so why not learn & share together?
We had amazing success in Bumpe, Sierra Leone—fundraising through and got 12 laptops to the community.
I don't think so! My colleague who works in after school has many work arounds for when there is no connectivity
Btw, Tara, that was a FABULOUS article about GlobalEd in your school!
Not that it's different per se, but more varied so they meet more needs https://t.co/rYyh27yofT
A3: I find this question tricky. Why do teachers of disadvantaged kids need different resources?
So true - global education gives Ss an experience of our human connections that underlie the differences
A3 - My internet connection at school opens a window to the world ... there is nothing that can stop us
Communities can often be untapped resources. Also demonstrates to Ss that we value their backgrounds https://t.co/vu6PJCk28E
A3: in many cases, their own communities. Over 60 languages spoken in Denver schools. That's
https://t.co/M84z0zG9QE
Q3: What resources exist to help teachers of economically disadvantaged students integrate global into their classrooms?
A1 in my district all Ss have iPads, the world is literally at their fingertips, the tough part is Ts letting Ss learn w/it
Agreed, and the world means a lot more to them than we often give them credit . It is their world, too. https://t.co/2yW9xmxiPx
Students are passionate about things that already mean something to them, too.
can start as simple as comparing classrooms, schools, cultures, etc...
I think we need a line on some of those work arounds to help us all when connectivity fails. Can she share ideas?
A3: Lit is an amazing resource in my low-income school. It invites local-global connections and themes to make it relevant
You raise an interesting point, Leslie. Economics preclude some from being "plugged in". https://t.co/YpO2gkw75p
A3: That's a tough one b/c internet connectivity/device availability not a guarantee everywhere.Does always need it?
exactly ! Life doesn't exist in subjects !!
So is that something that comes with the territory? Diff definitions b/c of diff lenses/ needs?
. You can always go old school pen pals, global learners does not need technology.
Q3:Traveling abroad w/ Fellow & Rural Global Teacher Fellow was transformative.
Hey ... we are studying Ancient Rome ... anyone in Italy interested in connecting?
I know has hundreds of languages spoken… we need to tap into the community even more! https://t.co/Aycug8cUPQ
A3: Why do teachers of "disadvantaged" kids need different resources?
Yes, home safe & sound. Can't believe how many things I want to try! need to prioritze! def &
More on Bumpe’s tech lab here https://t.co/EwgXF4fR1K . Important: schools participated in fundraising for partner’s access.
A3: Is this about costs of materials? There is so much great free stuff out there.
Q4: How do we make Global Education relevant/accessible for rural students with no global exposure at all?
., does a very nice job of pairing paper resources w their online site. And the resources are awesome
Yes! Great first steps, Louise! Work from the known to the new https://t.co/Lr61JOzs5U
can start as simple as comparing classrooms, schools, cultures, etc...
A3: Limited resources can be overcome when we as Ts can view education through a global lens
Yes! I will ask. I know there is a lot of printing involved :) But let me see what else she has!
Absolutely, life is an interdisciplinary experience but schools compartmentalize in frightening ways.
Just mailed a packet of snail mail letters to Taiwan. Kids are so excited. https://t.co/OaDl18Igny
. You can always go old school pen pals, global learners does not need technology.
This is really powerful - Valuing what is right there - Community inevitably reveals the global/local story
A4: Connect global to local issues and try to connect them to peers/classrooms abroad using .
Do they play on line video games? Odds are they're playing with global partners Ask them to map those https://t.co/Bss8IvoM0L
Q4: How do we make Global Education relevant/accessible for rural students with no global exposure at all?
So true & it's always fascinating material but must make sure not to minimize others!
I just said that today in class!!!
A4: These are the Ss we most need to include. I was one of those Ss. After hours activities? My mom hated when I stayed late.
A4. I'm totally rural. My kids have been eating it up. They think just a city is amazing.
yes. Some look at it thru a more econ lens. some cultural. some cosmopolitanism, etc
A5: They have global exposure/interdependency/interconnectedness, however limited or underdeveloped, to build on.
A4 Skype and virtual field trips are great ways to bring the world to rural classrooms. Linking local to global is key.
. Seriously, kids don't get much (if any) physical mail anymore. They get ecstatic
Agree completely https://t.co/eX1DZ3hvjX
This is really powerful - Valuing what is right there - Community inevitably reveals the global/local story
A4: Tap into what they know-clothes, food, etc.comes from all over the world. As many have said, local issues are global.
A4 We're matched with a class in Lahore and Mumbai. They're as amazed at the city as the culture.
Love this idea, Tim! https://t.co/CqZgqvFcyL
Do they play on line video games? Odds are they're playing with global partners Ask them to map those https://t.co/Bss8IvoM0L
Q4: How do we make Global Education relevant/accessible for rural students with no global exposure at all?
I was lucky to teach ecology for seven years, it was totally cross-disciplinary.
A4: Blogging with our sister-class in Morocco has been so rich in helping Ss see our commonalities https://t.co/0RekwLbTnT
A4- good question! I think part of the answer is to show them that diversity/ global connectedness everywhere is increasing
To me it's about diversity. It's about meeting so many varied needs of disadvantaged Ss https://t.co/licWcVdLZP
A3: Is this about costs of materials? There is so much great free stuff out there.
A4: teaches in rural Australia and she's an exemplary global educator. Rural teachers should connect with her.
A4: Get Ss hooked.Take advantage of international cultures @ local univ. People and food make real connections.
A3 are all easy & fun ways to engage, connect & enhance conversations globally
Absolutely! We just began a collab btw ELLs & Spanish learners in our school!Had never interacted b4!
and this time of year, most of any fruit they eat in the States is coming from South America. Ask why
A4 if Internet access, can have social media exchanges w/ other cultures' to humanize them (i.e. . )
this is anisha from Chicago chiming in from event!
that's amazing! I would love to teach my global studies class w/a science teacher,&English, & statistics, & ...
Q4 If kids connect w/ young people thru , relevance will be there naturally and urge to understand will come with it.
A4 I grew up in this situation. NO diversity. NO ability 2travel. I feel I was sheltered in a bad way https://t.co/LFtWQ88qqr
Q4: How do we make Global Education relevant/accessible for rural students with no global exposure at all?
I am also wondering about ways to be intentional about connecting ideas we are exploring to a wider audience.
We are doing a lot of statistics in biology now and that's as close as we can get to what ecology was.
I grew up in rural Wisconsin - farm country. All I ever wanted was to travel the world!
Watching UVA basketball, listening to CNN debate and following
Q3: we have some T's working on establishing an alumni network of former students who have worked/studied abroad
A3: Tap into local events such as the World Ag Expo in CA's Central Valley (suggested by CA Global Ed Summit participant)
Rural Ontario beef cattle farm here. I didn't know what I wanted, didn't know what the options were.
A4: Maybe there needs to be a with whatever rural teacher chat is out there...
A4 ask Ss, let them create their own learning experience by designing it
So, how can we define it more clearly for others who are just starting w/GlobalEd?
Great idea! , let's make it happen :) https://t.co/VYk6s17sWC
A4: Maybe there needs to be a with whatever rural teacher chat is out there...
Absolutely—ES teachers can do fruit maps, put fruit labels on a world map to understand connections. https://t.co/X2Yhcqxi98
and this time of year, most of any fruit they eat in the States is coming from South America. Ask why
I love this clip! It's how I eat chocolate. hehe
I completely agree! Global education brings up feelings of kindness, compassion, empathy. https://t.co/dyRhc4ywhq
Q4 If kids connect w/ young people thru , relevance will be there naturally and urge to understand will come with it.
A4: Remind Ss it is not always global down. Local communities shape the global community too. Most anyone can plug and play.
Thank you have enjoyed my short visit
A4: Ag. ed is just one aspect of in a rural env, but it's imp to not think of rural in a static manner https://t.co/DEHGxb5w8X
. your posts are warming this old science and math teacher's heart
Q5: How can teachers ensure multiple perspectives are considered when incorporating global themes into their curriculum?
Exactly Letty! Step back and Ss will step up every time! https://t.co/eyzhUIH4GL
A4 ask Ss, let them create their own learning experience by designing it
And then they can start to think about the impact of eating that strawberry https://t.co/0iexFRqiaz
Absolutely—ES teachers can do fruit maps, put fruit labels on a world map to understand connections. https://t.co/X2Yhcqxi98
and this time of year, most of any fruit they eat in the States is coming from South America. Ask why
Same here. We never went anywhere; very little diversity at my HS. https://t.co/XR9bWxrMt2
A4 I grew up in this situation. NO diversity. NO ability 2travel. I feel I was sheltered in a bad way https://t.co/LFtWQ88qqr
Q4: How do we make Global Education relevant/accessible for rural students with no global exposure at all?
That's a great idea, and also a great motivation to tap into ELLs as assets in our communities.
A4 Some systems are not in place, but there are resources avail thru Skype & GoogleHangouts! It takes exposure & pop 2 travel
Wow - it is amazing what simple connections can produce - just by not reinforcing the silo
Global education/awareness breeds tolerance. Tolerance leads to positive world change.
