So funny! I just checked out Fake News CNN, for the first time in a long time (they are dying in the ratings), to see if they covered my takedown yesterday of Jim Acosta (actually a nice guy). They didn’t! But they did say I already lost in my meeting with Putin. Fake News......

Morning #satchat. John from DC. Instructional Coach still reeling from all of the brilliant creative talent we had the great fortune of seeing last night in a fantastic production of @HamiltonMusical. Talk about gifted!!
A1) I think an important part of nurturing and supporting gifted students is identifying areas where they need to be challenged. When they aren’t challenged early, they don’t learn important skills that help in later years. #satchat#gtchat
G'morning #satchat! I'm Rebecca, NBCT and gifted educator, from NJ. I'm excited to hear all of the ways this group supports and nurtures our gifted learners! #GiftedMindshttps://t.co/YmNWO05l8u
A1: I think the biggest need for gifted students is valuing dissent, which is a challenge in our educational system. As Ts we aren’t used to being challenged, and we need to check our egos for questions we aren’t prepared for. That’s difficult. #satchat
A1 My lab door is always open, and my gifted kids often spend lunch/recess with me. Sometimes we work on Community Problem Solving club questions, all the time we explore what intrigues and excites them. #satchat
A1) Gifted students deserve & need as much Agency as any other students in your building. Opening communication lines with all students allows voice and choice in the direction of their education. #satchat
I agree, it is easy to forget about the children who are coasting, especially if they are quite. We need to have something else to challenge them once they have finished. #satchat
A1: Last year we differentiated across the grade for projects. All the gifted students worked with one teacher on their modified project. They were surrounded by peers working on the same challenge with a teacher to guide them #Satchat
A1: There is no more natural differentiation than culturally and socially relevant, personalized instruction => embrace the individual learner and what matters to them #Satchat
A1: Think the most important way is making people realize that gifted does not equal more work. Giving students 3 more worksheets to complete because they finish does nothing. #satchat
A1: ASK! It is extremely beneficial to everyone involved if we as teachers know what those special needs are. Parents have a good idea of what supports their gifted children need but so do the students. Ask what their needs are & it will point you in the right direction #satchat
A1. Fiddled with my course blogging assignments to add #gamification element. Now each “chapter” (unit) has a choice of one of four blog types, and students can stretch or scaffold accordingly:

A1 We need to be aware of the social/emotional needs of our gifted Ss and include them in all SEL. Always remember that gifted children are still children and we need to help them navigate their feelings. #satchat@Bec_Chirps
#satchat A1 As a classroom teacher, I always meet my students where they are and have them reach. For my gifted students, I challenge them with supplemental activities that will continue to make them stretch.
A1 My lab door is always open, and my gifted kids often spend lunch/recess with me. Sometimes we work on Community Problem Solving club questions, all the time we explore what intrigues and excites them. #satchat
Gifted students aren't always the compliant kids who work hard and get good grades. Teachers will tell me they don't understand why a kid is in G&T if he or she doesn't do their homework. I'm glad @Bec_chirps posted a chart that summarizes the difference so well. #satchat
Well put. Teaching is learning. Learning should not be comfortable. Students using their voices means that our Gifted Students should challenge themselves and us.
#SatChat
Yes! It helps when assignments are open-ended and Ts work as guides on the side pushing thinking & questioning, while learning alongside our Ss. This allows all Ss to thrive. #satchat
All students can exhibit "gifted" abilities. It depends on whether Ss are nurtured to learn, or merely filled with information. Finding answers to questions builds gifted learners. #satchat
A1 In math specifically, it is challenging all students with the higher level depth of knowledge questions. Some may grasp a concept quicker than others, but it is challenging their understanding of the concepts to reach the top rung of mastery of such concepts. #satchat
A1: As a former teacher I always nurtured my gifted students via differentiated instruction lesson offerings. Additionally, my modes of instruction even as a counselor are inclusive of multiple learning options such as visual, auditory, and sensory/kinesthetic. #satchat
Are we helping these students if we are pulling them out of class? Aren’t these suggestions best practices that we should be doing with all students? #satchat
#satchat A1 My three girls had a successful K-12 learning experience. I have grandchildren now, ages 18 months to 4 yo. How/when does a parent know their child is #gifted?
A1. It is important to recognize the entry point of each student and personalize their instruction at that level. Too often gifted students not being challenged. #satchat
A1: If we know our kids and create student centered classrooms, #gifted S's can be amazing leaders. We have to give them ownership of their learning with flexibility to use their ideas to show what they know. #satchat This goes for #sped S's too!
A1) It is extremely important to realize that a child identified as academically gifted may not be gifted in all areas; a gifted reader may still struggle with advanced math. #satchat#gtchat
A1) Challenging but we must take care of the outliers. Teaching to the middle is great for some, but teaching to the top is also a need. Make time for the outliers. #SatChat
In a classroom environment this can also model for all students the value of questioning and curiosity, bringing out the gifts within. When we set aside harmony for critical pedagogy, everyone wins! #satchat
A1: Social emotional learning is largely integrated into my classroom, helping facilitate conversations among Ss when needed, and providing LOTS of choice. #Satchat
A1: I guess I look at it this way...all of my students have special gifts...through many opportunities for play and inquiry, in our K class, we are able to collaborate, teach each other, and meet each other’s learning needs. #satchat
A1: I nurture the needs of gifted students by actually differentiating and not just giving them more work to do; make sure they are being challenged just as much as every other student. #satchat
A1-It’s important that we build a positive relationship with all students and give them opportunities to express their needs. Students must have voice and choice. #satchat
It is so important to remember to personalize learning not only for G & T students but for all students as well! Imagine all the doors that can be opened! #Satchat
A1: Twice-exceptional students who are gifted but have other special needs are confusing to teachers/parents. Learn to recognize or understand the signs: 7 Myths About Twice-Exceptional (2E) Students viai @UnderstoodOrghttps://t.co/vv8vPzNb9H#satchat
A1 Foster idea w/all students (especially gifted ones) that there can be more than single path that leads to learning goals. Coach flexibility as alternative to rigidness. Ask "What if..." & "How else might we..." questions. #satchat
Q2: Twice exceptional students are often misunderstood by the educational system. In what ways can we better support 2e students and their parents? #satchat
A1) Challenging but we must take care of the outliers. Teaching to the middle is great for some, but teaching to the top is also a need. Make time for the outliers. #SatChat
A1 Offering choice in lessons was the best thing I ever did. If you mastered a lesson you went on to another. No need to wait for T. Videos, enrichment, and games posted to help Ss practice along the way. T steps in when needed no matter where they are. Great results! #satchat
A1. Everyone has areas of need. Ensure that you are building positive, trusting, relationships with all students, so that you have a better understanding of how to support their individual needs. #satchat
What sorts of projects? I feel like gifted students can often benefit from the perspectives offered by all students. I think it would be a shame to deprive them of that completely; although I do like the idea of gifted students being pushed together #satchat
Exactly! Let's not punish them because they learn quickly. This is why I love PBL, writing workshop, makerspace. When Ss choose an area of interest they're never "done". They can go as far as they want without doing "extra" work. #satchat
A1: Think the most important way is making people realize that gifted does not equal more work. Giving students 3 more worksheets to complete because they finish does nothing. #satchat
Yes, sometimes we are helping these students to pull them out. We set different expectations for some students and see better results.
Maybe your Q is are we helping or hurting OTHER students by pulling them out?
#satchat
A1: Like all Ss, its a matter of building relationships. Parental input for gifted Ss extremely important. I try to incorporate their interests with independent projects. #Satchat
A1) Challenging but we must take care of the outliers. Teaching to the middle is great for some, but teaching to the top is also a need. Make time for the outliers. #SatChat
A personalized learning/mastery framework allows Ts to finally differentiate for our higher achievement learners. You must find ways to reach all the students #satchat
A1: I’m a strong believer that all Ss need the nurturing environment & that Labels can be both good and bad. When I share that with Ss, they recognize that the slate is clear & there is less anxiety about many things. #satchat
This is so true. My gifted students are the first ones to question why they have to do something, what the value is, or if it is just busy work. I shouldn't dread the questions, but be prepared with real world application scenarios to challenge them #satchat
A2) Pay especially close attention to 2e students' emotional needs and communicate, communicate, communicate with students, parents, and especially other teachers to build understanding and empathy. #satchat
Q2: Twice exceptional students are often misunderstood by the educational system. In what ways can we better support 2e students and their parents? #satchat
A2: The best way to serve 2e students is by identifying their needs, and ensuring that we are meeting those needs. Not just the gifted needs, not just the spec ed needs - ALL. #satchat
A1: Also - Perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and anxiety are often found in gifted populations. I am honored to work with @david_aderhold and many admins who talk openly about #mentalhealth and the needs of our kids. #satchat#giftedminds#wwprsd
Inspired this soggy morning by fearless mental health heroes 🥇 Tricia Baker, @david_aderhold and @Bec_Chirps at the Walk for @AttitudesInRev. Dr McLelland-Crawley: “We need to put Maslow before Bloom”. So true 💚🐶@JW_Burr
A1: Differentiate Instruction is the key. We also need to make sure that teachers understand that providing gifted students with more work does not meet their individual needs. We have to give them more challenging assignments that foster their creative thinking. #Satchat
Depending on what you read usually it could be somewhere between 1 - 3% of the population, who are truly gifted! I think there is a big difference between truly gifted and academically gifted! #satchat
A1: Think the most important way is making people realize that gifted does not equal more work. Giving students 3 more worksheets to complete because they finish does nothing. #satchat
True - once our classes are open ended & we conference with Ss we can meet ALL of their needs. And do we really need to label them? I find that all my Ss have gifts to share. #satchat
Sometimes it's not more projects, but asking the abled/talented student to go deeper. It's more about pushing them beyond their self-perceived limits. #satchat
What sorts of projects? I feel like gifted students can often benefit from the perspectives offered by all students. I think it would be a shame to deprive them of that completely; although I do like the idea of gifted students being pushed together #satchat
Q2: Twice exceptional students are often misunderstood by the educational system. In what ways can we better support 2e students and their parents? #satchat
A2: a genuine human profession requires genuine human relationships - taking the time to communicate with your Ss and their families validates their needs #Satchat
Real talk: we as teachers need to deal with our own perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and anxiety if we are going to help students. I think there is a lot of stigma for teachers navigating these things that translate to our students. #satchat
A2: We can better support of students (“2e”) by ensuring that we differentiate based on interests, passions, and dreams...as often as possible (remaining realistic, based on numbers of students per class). #satchat
Making this process manageable is key!
We cannot use the excuse of time to be the only reason we choose to teach to the middle. So much more promise sit in our classrooms than most even understand. #satchat
A1) Challenging but we must take care of the outliers. Teaching to the middle is great for some, but teaching to the top is also a need. Make time for the outliers. #SatChat
A2. Encouraging enriched learning through PLAY and creativity! “Build a scene from what we just read using only @LEGO_Group.” Team-based problem solving. Side quests. Leaderboards. Non-linear and non-traditional ways to foster high levels of effort and engagement. #satchat
You can achieve a certain level of mastery through a growth mindset. that is true. One is born gifted. We nurture that gift specifically in our classrooms through acceleration and enrichment. #satchat

@effortfuleduktr, @BTopink, @Bec_Chirps
YES! Emotional needs are particularly important with 2e students. They can get frustrated so easily with their limitations and their desire to soar.
#satchat
A2 Twice exceptional Ss need us to be able to truly differentiate their learning experiences. Ts need to be very deliberate in their teaching and know these kids don’t fit in one mold of gifted. One size doesn’t fit all! #satchat@Bec_Chirps
A2 Recognize that arriving at labels like gifted or special education or twice exceptional marks the *start* of long (potentially life-long), complex, ongoing conversations about who we are & how we learn -- rather than the end. #SatChat
A1: Conversations are powerful! Don’t guess how Ss are feeling - talk to them, value their input, figure out together which paths to travel to meet interests/needs. #satchat
One of my brothers was invited to be a part of an enrichment group for gifted students. When he found out he would have to do all of the regular classwork PLUS all of the work for the enrichment group, he declined, much to the surprise of the teachers! #satchat
A1: I give my gifted Ss tons of choice with product, process and content. I also give them opportunities to take on leadership roles. This yr I want to give them time to teach the class about topics they are passionate about. #Satchat
We have to think of ALL students and their different individual needs. All humans are not the same. Why should we teach to middle when we can magnify our impact to ALL Ss. #satchat#SatChat
#SatChat
When our Ss work in groups I notice that they now look for different talents. "We need someone who can draw." They realize that in order to have a strong group, they need a variety of gifts to be represented. #satchat
Q2: For 2e I suggest forming student relationships. It can gain student interest/participation the lesson presentation. 2e students can benefit from RTI intervention techniques as well as coping skills taught to reduce anxiety that comes with this ability. #satchat
A2: Relationships. It starts with relationships. I understand the challenge in large classes, but it’s still possible. The more we can understand where they’re coming from, the better we can facilitate and nurture. #satchat
Very true. One of my amazing groups of gifted students @nuyu_team works to spread #mindful strategies and to start the conversation about teachers putting on their own oxygen mask first. #satchat
In reply to
@3_DLeadership, @david_aderhold, @nuyu_team
A2) 2E Students are the brilliant minds we often refer too. Understanding their needs and unique challenges can be very hard and challenging. My answer will always be communication and setting students/families up to win vs fail. #Satchat
A2: For 2e I suggest forming student relationships. It can gain student interest/participation the lesson presentation. 2e students can benefit from RTI intervention techniques as well as coping skills taught to reduce anxiety that comes with this ability. #satchat
A2 Again from a math standpoint, it is challenging the 2e to communicate why their answer is correct. This is normally the hard part for a 2e. Building a comfortable relationship will allow them to attempt to explain their thinking more openly. #satchat
A1: I use a lot of lesson differentiation. With @nearpod I can make a copy of lesson, and add enriching elements for a self-paced lesson and remediate with a small group, without doing too much extra work. No one likes extra work, not gifted students, not teachers #satchat
Q2: Twice exceptional students are often misunderstood by the educational system. In what ways can we better support 2e students and their parents? #satchat
A2: Research, research, research. If you are unsure how to support 2e students then odds are someone else does. Involve other veteran teachers who have experienced and taught 2e students & can give some advice. Make sure that 2e student is still socially engaged. #satchat
It shouldn’t matter if the student is gifted or struggles. If you know your Ss like I would guess many of you do you know how to challenge them where they are at. This is the sign of a great teacher. All students are gifted in their own way! #satchat
#satchat Reading through the thread and hearing a lot of "Well, wouldn't this be good for ALL students?". Remember, a truly gifted child has specific needs just as a child does who may have learning challenges. Know these children and provide a mile deep - not wide.
Many of the strategies from gifted education can be applied, but there are disastrous consequences of believing we can just keep providing gifted kids with the same level of academic & emotional support as all other areas. Equity means everyone gets what they need. #satchat
Working with adults I’m behind in my literature reviews for how kids learn.. stuff like 2E is news to me https://t.co/BnP8MnMpHv#satchat#pkmchat .. what’s learning like for a grown up who wasn’t ID’d as gifted in K-12?

A3) We are seeking to identify those students sooner in elementary schools. Then making sure all upper schools have academic programs that could meet individual needs with e-Labs, dual-enrollment, AP courses. #SatChat
A2: Communicate, communicate, communicate! Other teachers, specialists, parents, and the students themselves all need to be a part of the constant conversation to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate how to best meet the needs of the 2E learner. #satchat
A3) One of the best ways to serve underserved gifted students is identifying them through a universal screening process early in the elementary years. #satchat#gtchat
I was thinking that as well. As I go through the conversations, the strategies we are talking about are great for all S's. The gifted S's I've worked w/also had disabilities, so #SEL was key for them! #satchat
Sorry, I was specifically asking about the wisdom of always separating gifted students into their own group. Working with gifted peers would be beneficial, but do we run the risk of doing harm to classroom communities if we don't do work in teaching how to work with all? #satchat
A3. In elementary and middle- we have an Academically Talented program that meets the needs of Gifted Students and Academically Talented Ss. They work on passion projects, etc. We also have advance courses starting in middle school. #satchat
A3) We are seeking to identify those students sooner in elementary schools. Then making sure all upper schools have academic programs that could meet individual needs with e-Labs, dual-enrollment, AP courses. #SatChat
Many of the strategies from gifted education can be applied, but there are disastrous consequences of believing we can just keep providing gifted kids with the same level of academic & emotional support as all other areas. Equity means everyone gets what they need. #satchat
A2: I think the parents of 2e children need to hear about their child’s strengths often. Celebrating S success with parents is a huge relationship builder. Additionally, if we are truly meeting individual needs, the support each 2e learner will need is different. #satchat
I also think sometimes as educators we will only associated gifted with students who have high test scores. Sometimes that may not be the case. #Satchat
Yes, and I’m saying tools like the awesome EQ tool you posted should not be exclusive to gifted. It has benefits for all Ss. Our amazing Ts are able to differentiate with tools like that for gifted and other Ss. #UDL#satchat
Something I’m sitting with. What does it say about our educational system that we need to pull gifted students out of the natural classroom environment? Why doesn’t the climate in all classrooms support all students? (1/?) #satchat
You said it! Each student has different needs, interests, and learning styles. We need to tap in to the funds of knowledge EACH and EVERY student brings and harness the skills they have to expand on them and teach new ones. #satchat
A3 Building relationships, knowing the Ss, engaging appropriately. Knowing the research. Providing Rich opportunities for discussion, feedback, and choice in work/demonstartion of understanding/mastery. #satchat

A3. Reading a *TON*, sending teacher teams to attend amazing conferences (@SeriousPlayConf last week in DC), and participating in great Twitter opportunities like #satchat and #hivesummit really help us explore all the great resources that are out there!
A2: Our #2e students often feel disconnected from all groups and reality. Start by acknowledging and supporting the giftedness. Work from their strengths! #satchat
A3 We are looking at how we id our gifted Ss so we don’t miss anyone. We’re also looking at giving our Ts more PD in serving gifted Ss in all classrooms. Work to do for sure. #satchat@Bec_Chirps
What if the problem is how we put our classrooms together to begin with? What if age based learning isn’t the answer? What if we grouped students by passion area? #satchat (2/2)
I agree. My point is that we should be looking through that lens for all of our students. We should be thinking more inclusively and less exclusively. #SatChat
A2 Less focus on standardized academics, more attention to student choice, voice, and authentic, enriched learning opportunities benefits everyone. #satchat
Thumbs up for two-part process here: Identify, followed by integral "Now what?" steps. In addition to accelerated learning opportunities, I hope we're keeping eye on social-emotional ball, too. #satchat
A3) We are seeking to identify those students sooner in elementary schools. Then making sure all upper schools have academic programs that could meet individual needs with e-Labs, dual-enrollment, AP courses. #SatChat
A3. I help all Ss by allowing them to choose their reading mat'l in the library, regardless of their level. No judgements reading level, etc. But the best thing is to ask them what they want in the library and then BUY it. Ss need to have input to their library.
#satchat
A1: Challenge students. Provide the resources needed for the students to succeed. Have enrichment options available for the students who are beyond exceptional. #Satchat
Sometimes I feel as if teachers are afraid of 2e students due to lack of professional development and understanding of the needs of the students. As a leader, we have to make sure we are providing teachers the tools they need in order to be successful with the students. #Satchat
A3: We are not. I feel like this demographic gets lost when focusing on raising up the scores of the lower percentile and differentiating for the students who were identified as gifted early #satchat

Something I’m sitting with. What does it say about our educational system that we need to pull gifted students out of the natural classroom environment? Why doesn’t the climate in all classrooms support all students? (1/?) #satchat
Many great suggestions here but they should not be just for the G&T. All students benefit from choice - after all if they had more choice maybe scores would be up. Not all Ss are good test takers but they know the content! #satchat
A3: We are moving technology forward to give all students various modes of instruction. Programs that exists on the middle school level now are AVID and Honors classes. Furthermore teacher instruction involves 8 minute model interventions for students with specific need.#satchat
Many teachers do not have training in serving gifted learners. Ideally, every pre-service teaching program would require it. Rutgers and UConn have excellent programs in gifted ed. #satchat
Something I’m sitting with. What does it say about our educational system that we need to pull gifted students out of the natural classroom environment? Why doesn’t the climate in all classrooms support all students? (1/?) #satchat
We should help all students excel. As adults we often separate into peer groups with accompanying success. Classroom teachers can't always cover all levels in same room. #satchat#gtchat
Sorry, I was specifically asking about the wisdom of always separating gifted students into their own group. Working with gifted peers would be beneficial, but do we run the risk of doing harm to classroom communities if we don't do work in teaching how to work with all? #satchat
A3) By focusing more on learning agency & digital portfolios. Also some of our middle schools are looking to go away from traditional grading models and aim at progress and mastery🎯. #Satchat
A3 In my district, classroom Ts are expected to differentiate their lessons. From late Sept-late March, gift Ss are pulled out for 40 minutes a week by gifted teacher by grade level. If T is sick, no makeup. At zero time dies Gift T collobarate lessons with classroom Ts. #satchat
A3) An openness to a wide-array of opportunities is important for gifted students such as time spent with intellectual peers, acceleration options, or flexible ability grouping paired with differentiated instruction. #satchat#gtchat
A1: I think all Ss should be given real world problems to work on and solve. Students’ abilities are going to determine how complex not just the problem is but the solution as well. #satchat
