Q1: Holiday break is often a time used to reflect on improving your practice. What new ideas, perspectives, or practices are you bring into this semester?
a1: I am starting this semester off with some learning myself at FETC and also digging deeper into design thinking process with our teachers and students #tnedchat
A1 - I'm focusing on an aspect of concrete examples called 'concreteness fading'. I wrote about how I plan to do this in my class here:

Q1: Holiday break is often a time used to reflect on improving your practice. What new ideas, perspectives, or practices are you bring into this semester? #tnedchat
#TNedchat 2nd semester is when everything has to come together- mastery, spiraling of content. We need to know where every Ss is in regards to stds and retract or enrich
A1) We have a new AB block schedule this year. My winter break was full of reflection. Unfortunately we have only been back 3 days to see if my implementation works. #tnedchat
Q1 Einstein had a quote about if he had one hour to answer a question he'd spend 55 minutes figuring out the problem and 5 minutes figuring the solution. Over the break I decided that's what I need to do more. Ask good questions and not just seek solutions.
#tnedchat
A 1: My team #ccslearns decides on practices to implement in the following school year. Once we have one in place, we move to examine and dive into the next one. This way we learn and explore together #tnedchat

Q1: Holiday break is often a time used to reflect on improving your practice. What new ideas, perspectives, or practices are you bring into this semester?
A1 for me holidays are always about family, relationships, a bit of grief and a lot of grace...after that reload I always try to be more intentional is dispensing GRACE and enhancing RELATIONSHIPS #tnedchat

A1: Trying to rethink what groupworthy means in the classroom. Many students struggle in groups and i think it’s because the tasks are not truly groupworthy. #tnedchat

A1: Having a “reset” coming off maternity leave- breaking bad habits learned and starting off strong with positivity and high expectations for student success both academically and behaviorally #TNedchat
A1 Family Time first but then reflect on goals achieved and where we need to improve for second semester. Visit with faculty about progress and areas needing more attention. #TnEdChat
My Design Thinking page https://t.co/dAtPdVOUBt My students & community members helped me put together a comprehensive study of the school neighborhood's history & social-economic development #tnedchat
Working in a community school, I brainstorm ideas dealing with increasing parent/community engagement, addressing mental health issues - whole child perspective - all while focusing on academics! #TnEdChat
A1: Having a “reset” coming off maternity leave- breaking bad habits learned and starting off strong with positivity and high expectations for student success both academically and behaviorally #TNedchat
A1: As a school counselor, 2nd sem. is a time for helping students maintain momentum from 1st sem. but build toward the next year, whether it’s in K-12 or post-sec. ed. #TNEdChat
A1: wow! What do I not want to try!? This semester, I challenge myself to slow down & really enjoy the process of teaching & being part of my kids' learning journey! I need to listen more! #TNedchat
Q1: Holiday break is often a time used to reflect on improving your practice. What new ideas, perspectives, or practices are you bring into this semester?
A2 Frequent check-ins with trusted colleagues and mentors — in my school, members of #MTBoS, and in the @Ed_Cooperative — all my valuable PLCs #TNedchat
A2 My role is to help Ts & Ss become more successful integrating & using technology more meaningfully. So, analyzing data to see where/how I can fit that in is important. #TNEdChat
A1: I want to get more of the wonderful resources found here on Twitter and some of the professional books into teachers hands and help them implement the strategies to help our students. #TNedchat
Q1: Holiday break is often a time used to reflect on improving your practice. What new ideas, perspectives, or practices are you bring into this semester?
A2: I begin by asking my students. They can be brutally honest, but it helps me begin my own reflection and improvement cycle. Our students see us everyday and know our strengths and weaknesses. #tnedchat
A2 It has to be a holistic approach. You’ve got to look at assessment data (formative, summative, observations). Conversations with other teachers. It also helps to observe others to see what they are doing to improve your craft. #tnedchat
A2 I need to slow down and seek to understand my content area and its connection to Ss lives. Also build relationships instead if being so test score driven.#tnedchat
A2 #TNedchat in yearlong classes we use midterm data to analyze areas that need reinforcement. Once identified, we ensure that these areas are spiraled into our assessements.
#TNedchat I solicit feedback from those I work with—the lead principal, teachers, students, even local business leaders. I filter my goals for the school & myself through that, then use that as a basis for an improvement plan.
Observing others + getting ideas from them + having them observe me/give me feedback helps. I co-teach and get so many ideas from my co-teacher every day! Also, important to see opportunity for growth as a positive... everyone has room for it #tnedchat
A2 I invest a lot of time in lsietnting to student feedback. Coupled with peer and admin feedback and using my #PLN for resources and as a souding board, I try to course correct realtime and through reflection longterm. #tnedchat
Great question! I am so aware of my needs. I try and prioritize them. I learn so much from my pln on Twitter, which in turn, helps me determine my growth needs. #TNedchat A2
A2: Look where my weaknesses are and try to grow there. Set goals that reflect my needs and my school's needs. Focus on modeling #lifelonglearning#tnedchat
A2 Great Q for every leader... I must consider if my area to address produces organizational change...or just an easy resolution to "check." I typically want to de the ME and leave the WE...bad choice! #tnedchat
A2: As a first-year educator, I’m very reliant on feedback from admin and coaches. Also student data, but I find that less of a factor. I appreciate the real-time feedback for improvements I need to make #tnedchat
#tnedchat A2: So much of my position is compliance driven, but I try to set goals that relate to collaboration and communication. The little things make me more effective...like how quickly I respond to a teacher’s email.
A2: As a coach I look for opportunities to improve instruction. How can I support teachers in improving their practice? I stay student centered and solutions oriented when determining areas for growth #tnedchat
A2 As a librarian, I work with everyone! I ask my literacy coach and other teachers to watch me teach and give me feedback...not formal eval, but for my own professional growth! And my students will always give me feedback! 😉#tnedchat
A2: I look for areas where I feel the most inspired and seek opportunities for professional learning there. Additionally, I also look for state/district/school goals and align my PD with those as well. #TNEdChat
A2 I need to slow down and seek to understand my content area and its connection to Ss lives. Also build relationships instead if being so test score driven.#tnedchat
Q2 Each year I try to focus on something different. This year, I'm trying to do more group work and increase the engagement of my students. Just wrote a grant for flexible seating to work towards this goal! #tnedchat
A2: Review data, engage stakeholders, and solicit feedback from peers/supervisors to determine what I can do to make the biggest difference for ALL students. #TNedchat
Love this! Have learned so much from trusted, growth-minded colleagues in Nashville. Find educators to challenge you and take risks with 👍🏼@Ed_Cooperative and @ProjectLITComm#tnedchat
In reply to
@joelbezaire, @Ed_Cooperative, @Ed_Cooperative, @ProjectLITComm
A2: I like to think about my long-term goals and choose something I can work on over time and another area I can work on now and see immediate results for me and my students. #tnedchat
So true, the most authentic feedback is the ones you will get from your students! Sometimes they even make it hurt, which is the best form of reflection. #TNedchat
A2 As a librarian, I work with everyone! I ask my literacy coach and other teachers to watch me teach and give me feedback...not formal eval, but for my own professional growth! And my students will always give me feedback! 😉#tnedchat
A2: I am so fortunate to work with an amazing group on my 4th grade team! We constantly talk & share our ideas/concerns for growth! My gut tells me a lot too; my data confirms what I think, and then I go from there! #TNedchat
A2) Honest self-talk + feedback from others (Ss, Ts, parents, admin) is key. Open up the doors to my room and invite others in, always. Self-motivate and seek out opps to continue improving practice! #tnedchat

A2 My Pineapple Charts page https://t.co/21CRRyYZm6 Employ this technique and get feedback from your fellow faculty & administrators. Also get feedback from students to improve your techniques. #tnedchat
I am a big fan and biased about #edcampgigcity in Chattanooga but I also gain much from #ISTE and #FETC but my biggest source of growth is TWITTER #tnedchat
I love edcamps! We just hosted an administrative edcamp for surrounding districts. It was a big success and great day of learning from each other. #tnedchat
A3 As a tech coach, attending conferences like ISTE and edcamp have been SO helpful. Also, Twitter is an invaluable PLN tool! I love networking and getting ideas & best practices from around the globe! #TNEdChat
Greg O'Loughlin, 6th Grade in Nashville. A2 - I like to invite teachers into my classroom for more frequent observation and feedback. Sometimes I'm looking for specific feedback on an instructional goal and other times, less formal - helps me stay aware of my blindspots #tnedchat
A3 My roles as a TNCore Coach and as a @HopeStreetGroup state teacher fellow have both been EXCELLENT PD. Also, presenting at and attending #LEAD2017 was an amazing experience! #TNedChat
A3) National ed conferences with self-selected learning, local leadership pipeline programs, school-based leadership opportunities. All 3 levels are relevant - range from big picture to self-reflection. All helped shape my teaching/leadership! #tnedchat
A3. This year I attended a fantastic conference, TETC, and got so many great ideas. I am also working on the Micro-Credentials Pilot for the second year - I love the individual learning! #tnedchat
#TnEdChat A3: We need more content specific training within sped fields (SLP, sped teachers, school psychs). I have loved how devoted @Joanna_Bivins has been trying to reach all corners of our state with training for school psychs! She can’t do it alone though! We need more!!
A3 probably three-five tweetchats a week...home based, free, I have NEVER attempted a follow-up without immediate assistance, continuity of program... #tnedchat
#TnEdchat A3: the best professional learning opportunities I’ve ever been through had one of two things: they were led by peers, or they INVOLVED students. I would STRONGLY encourage any school to get the viewpoints of their ultimate “customers”—their students!
Q3 EdCamps have become my favorite and most useful. Teacher-driven conversations where you can see what’s going on in your teacher community. I led a session on block scheduling that I learned lots as he facilitator. #tnedchat
A3: The math twitter blog-o-sphere or #MTBoS no doubt. I learn something new every day from it. It is such a supportive and honest community #iTeachMath#tnedchat
A2) I found with competing initiatives to increase alignment & avoid initiative fatigue it was important for me to align my areas for growth w/S targets, Content area foci, District goals,w/ the standards & TEAM Rubric as a foundation #tnedchat#DualScreens#30TabsOpenOnLaptop 😬
A2: I identify my areas of growth through: self-reflection, surveying my students each quarter, and inviting observation + conversation about what others see in my classroom! #TNedchat
A3. This year I attended a fantastic conference, TETC, and got so many great ideas. I am also working on the Micro-Credentials Pilot for the second year - I love the individual learning! #tnedchat
A3: Being around like minded individuals and learning from them- MNPS Teacher Leadership Institute and currently as a @SCORE4Schools#edfellow. I have definitely learned to get out of my comfort zone and work on strengthening my skills #TNedchat
#TnEdChat A3: We need more content specific training within sped fields (SLP, sped teachers, school psychs). I have loved how devoted @Joanna_Bivins has been trying to reach all corners of our state with training for school psychs! She can’t do it alone though! We need more!!
A3. I find the most value in PD that occurs over an extended period so that opportunities for collaboration, implementation, and reflection can occur. #tnedchat
Our @mnps_el PLC this year has been really helpful, as it’s my first year with my ELL endorsement... I was nervous! But it has been an awesome challenge and I have learned a lot about best practices for all students. #tnedchat
A3 So lucky to live in Nashville and have the best PD provided by @MNPSLibraries. Our PD model has a lot of choice for what I need help with! And, of course, my Twitter tribe helps tremendously #TNEdChat
A3: Joining the ISTE networks has been beneficial for me. I’m actively involved with @ISTESTEM. I’m also an EdCamp junkie and those have been life-changing. You have to take charge of your own personal growth. #tnedchat
Working with other administrators through formal & informal PD - I want to surround myself with admin who are being innovative & growing students; being a part of AsPIRE made a huge impact. #TNedchat
A3b I love my monthly #CHAedu#coffeeEDU meet ups. Totally organic and helpful to grow out of my school silo and hear voices of other area edus. #tnedchat
A3 Too many to list. 1.getting google cert level 1&2, working on trainer. 2. Getting ED.S 3. Reading books and watching videos about teaching in general. Not in that order. #tnedchat
A3: I can honestly say I learn something from everything I attend and/or try...online learning, dabbling w/new to me resources, conferences, MOOCs, edcamps, MicroCrendentials & Twitter - chats are my go to for PLN growth & instant feedback from around the world #TNedchat
Foundation for Teaching Economics: Econ for Leaders. It revolutionized how I teach economics by introducing me to several simulations. This in turn inspired me to seek out more simulations. The kids love the hands on approach. Best thing is the PD is free. #TNedchat
Absolutely, plus the learning with @SCORE4Schools didn't stop at the end of the fellowship. I continue to learn from the experience and ongoing interactions with alumni and current fellows. #tnedchat
A3 - @SolutionTree PLC conference and @aasa Personalized Learning cohort are two of my best PD sessions. Sitting down with fellow Directors at @toss conferences is fantastic as well to share ideas! We have great opportunities for PD in our state and always online! #tnedchat
#TNedchat As an AP, I have benefited greatly from observing teachers, students and leaders in action. It's one thing to sit and receive information, but a whole different level when you see it in action. Asking questions, engaging in conversation, seeing students learning...
A3: @ncte always provides incredible PD. Some of the best opportunities have been inviting excellent teachers to complete low-stakes observations and provide feedback. I also love watching pros teach well. #tnedchat
A3: podcasts, books, & following inspirational educators on twitter!! Also,my county @loudoncountysch does a fantastic job of encouraging fellow teachers to led PD! I learn more from other teachers than I do anything else! #TNedchat
A3: Week long institutes are the best. Totally immersed with 20 educators. I’ve attended tech & content Institutes, hands down best learning. #tnedchat
Q4: You are some of our most engaged and inspiring educators in TN. Wondering: How can we encourage more of our best and brightest students to pursue a career as an educator and follow your lead? #TNedchat
Q4: You are some of our most engaged and inspiring educators in TN. Wondering: How can we encourage more of our best and brightest students to pursue a career as an educator and follow your lead? #TNedchat
A friend just asked me to pick-up a person who I can barely stand...PLUS, the roads are icy and dangerous.
My response...
#tnedchat 'cory booker' 'dr. ronny jackson' #inners#tuesdaymotivation
A3: Collaborating across grades + positions in the school with peers like @jtmoorelibrary@JTM_IB + @AlexKameen offers great professional development on a daily basis! #TNedchat
A3: Any conversation anywhere.. edcamps are the best and I hope to see many of you in Chattanooga! #tnedchat That said, being a part of the innovator program gave me an opportunity to invest in the myself. I wish we had more opportunities like it.
We have to give them opportunities to know what it is like to teach (even the youngest). Create collaboration, creative ways for them to share what they know. Empower them to teach others. Give them the bug! #tnedchat
Q4: You are some of our most engaged and inspiring educators in TN. Wondering: How can we encourage more of our best and brightest students to pursue a career as an educator and follow your lead? #TNedchat
A4. Student engagement is vital! Disrupting class and providing students meaningful and relevant learning experiences can drive interest in learning as well as in the field of education! #tnedchat
#tnedchat educators can be the best advertisers for our profession by honestly discussing the hard parts but also the best aspects of the job and the amazing support networks available to push each of us to grow.
A4 - We can start by promoting teaching as a career at our own school career fairs. We promote so many other professions, but too often we don't have our own career at the fair. Start early and promote often! #tnedchat
A4 We should encourage them at younger ages to teach and share with others. They may be students, but they have so much knowledge to give. Start them early with a love of teaching & learning. #TNEdChat
A4) Both of my kids are great students and they want to be teachers because teachers have inspired them to be amazing. Lets continue to inspire. #TnEdChat
A4: giving them opportunity to experience is the best way. student teaching doesn't have to begin in college. This allows them to see what might be their career #TNedchat
Q4: You are some of our most engaged and inspiring educators in TN. Wondering: How can we encourage more of our best and brightest students to pursue a career as an educator and follow your lead? #TNedchat
A4: I’ve worked in two very different districts in TN and neither of them put a strong emphasis on an education-related elective focus pathway. If we don’t encourage our own profession, how do we expect students to find it themselves? #TnEdChat
A4: I think positioning teaching as a highly-esteemed profession AND offering more competitive compensation are the only solutions to the National Teacher shortage. #TNedchat
A4. Be positive about teaching and learning. Show that you love it! Teachers who are negative about the profession will not inspire the next generation of teachers. #tnedchat
#TnEdchat A4: Awesome question! I think we have to take it upon ourselves to reach out & spread the GOOD NEWS of being an educator! Speak to teacher prep programs, get your system to implement the Teaching as a Profession POS, start Future Teacher Clubs.
A4) Continue partnerships between colleges, communities, and public schools. The sooner potential Ts are in the classroom and with Ss, the sooner they realize the demands + the rewards of the job. Support from all levels is key to hiring / retention of the best. #tnedchat
#TnEdChat A4: I knew teaching was my path when I joined FTA in high school. We volunteered at the next door elementary, and I knew I found my gift. We need strong, active FTA organizations with strong teachers as leaders.
#tnedchat A3: I use the leadership component of my CTSO. Had a student interested 3 years ago and its an awesome opportunity for my students to work with their State Director.
A4: I think positioning teaching as a highly-esteemed profession AND offering more competitive compensation are the only solutions to the national teacher shortage. #TNedchat
A4: teachers must stop posting negative memes and comments on social media even if just trying to be funny. Respect for the profession starts with us! We must promote the positive! More support for new teachers #tnedchat
Q4: You are some of our most engaged and inspiring educators in TN. Wondering: How can we encourage more of our best and brightest students to pursue a career as an educator and follow your lead? #TNedchat
A4 There are still many misconceptions about teaching as a profession...so I think some “real talk” at the middle and high school level would be helpful! FTA in high school really helped me! #TNedchat
A4:
• encourage legislators to fully fund education in TN and avoid unfunded mandates
• support and trust teachers as they experiment and innovate
• lessen the number of initiatives and focus on a singular vision
• elevate the conversation around education
#tnedchat
Q4: You are some of our most engaged and inspiring educators in TN. Wondering: How can we encourage more of our best and brightest students to pursue a career as an educator and follow your lead? #TNedchat
A4: Young people need to see teaching as a passion project. A chance to improve their community. They need to see the paths we take with the goal of effecting change.. not getting an admin cert or higher pay. #tnedchat
A4. Sad but true, pay is important and most reject to due to that. Also loss of respect for teaching turns off Ss. Lastly, education is slow to change with the times as today's Ss are very different from earlier generations.#tnedchat
A4: build relationships, change pedagogy to meet the needs of Ss, always smile & be the motivation you want to inspire...I was blessed w/great teachers who inspired me #tnedchat
Q4: You are some of our most engaged and inspiring educators in TN. Wondering: How can we encourage more of our best and brightest students to pursue a career as an educator and follow your lead? #TNedchat
A4 no one damages the public perception of education as an educator not satisfied with the work, conditions, pay, etc. EXPECT them to get in and row or get OUT and find fulfillment! Not an easy gig. #TooImportantForAverage#tnedchat
A4. Tell (brag) to students about all the awesome parts of teaching they don't see. An Instagram message from an adult student thanking you, chatting with the TN Commissioner of Education, setting up your own classroom, seeing the lightbulb come on! #tnedchat
A4: First, students must have engaging, positive and high quality teachers throughout their K12 setting. Second, more open student loan forgiveness programs. Third, Continune to raise teacher pay. Fourth, Continued support from Governor and TDOE staff. #TNedchat
A4: hmm.. this is a good one! With so many competing ways to earn a living, we have to show them from day one in PreK or K what a game-changing profession this is!! Model, connect, change lives! We have to do something that sets us apart from the rest! #TNedchat
Q4: You are some of our most engaged and inspiring educators in TN. Wondering: How can we encourage more of our best and brightest students to pursue a career as an educator and follow your lead? #TNedchat
Wonderful ideas! Completely agree. We are showing leadership at @TNedu promoting our own profession beginning next week with #TeachTodayTN tour. #TnEdChat
A4: INSPIRE. Do new things in the classroom. Do cool things in the classroom. Show students that teaching is not this one thing in a box you have to do in one way. #TnEdChat
A4 Allow opportunities for precollegiate job based learning for Jr./Sr. Promote teaching at the State Level using law makers, state officials, and public Tn figures. Repition of a positiove message makes a difference. Show value through promotion/advertising #tnedchat
Thanks for letting me join in on the discussion! I always learn so much when I get to engage with educators and I enjoyed talking with you all tonight! #TNedchat
A4 no one damages the public perception of education as an educator not satisfied with the work, conditions, pay, etc. EXPECT them to get in and row or get OUT and find fulfillment! Not an easy gig. #TooImportantForAverage#tnedchat
A4b Be someone that students want to be! Grumpy teachers don't make me want to be a teacher...passionate, engaging, knowledgable and relational teachers do! #tnedchat
I have to agree. It’s such an important job! Compensation to attract top notch candidates, growth opps so they can stay. If we’re shooting for the moon, let’s manage resources to support teachers more effectively, like planning time, PLCs, PD, class size. #TNedchat
A4: Relationships and respect go a long way, no matter the age of the child. The educators I had that I admire were the ones who saw students as people and not just a body in the room #tnedchat
A4) I wonder if we can learn from @UNCF 's "I'm Your Dividend Campaign" in part Ts could share how the profession doesn't continue w/o our Ss...imagine a world w/o Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Therapists, HVAC Technicians and the profession list goes on... #TnEdChat
We as educators must talk of the positives of our profession. No more of the “you have so much potential, you can do better than teaching” comments (I know we all heard these as a student!). There is no greater way to positively make a difference than teaching! #TNedchat
Q4: You are some of our most engaged and inspiring educators in TN. Wondering: How can we encourage more of our best and brightest students to pursue a career as an educator and follow your lead? #TNedchat
@sdavick created an awesome flip grid to share with students what it is like to be a teacher. She's asking all our teachers to participate their voice. #tnedchat
Thanks #tnedchat and @McQueenCandicefor another great chat! If we value TN Ts and the work they do everyday with our Ss, we have to shout it from the rooftops regularly. Our shortcomings are so often magnified we have to make sure the positives are as well.
Q3: Meeting with leaders from across the country in the @XQAmerica Super School cohort has opened my eyes to such great strategies and innovation and has made me a much better educator. #TNEdchat#RethinkHighSchool
#TNedchat A4: I have to continue building my CTSO leaders and better illustrating my process to my Ss. After State Conference I see my student leaders will turning to my SkillsUSA chapter and setting the stage for growth. This will let me ID Ss who enjoy the education process.
Thanks for letting me join in on the discussion! I always learn so much when I get to engage with educators and I enjoyed talking with you all tonight! #TNedchat
Q4: I believe a simple conversation goes a long way. Many kids would love to hear a teacher say, "You would be a great educator; have you thought about the field?" Teachers need to speak life to future teachers. #tnedchat
A4: When we are passionate about what we do & take pride in our work, it’s contagious! If we want to continue to encourage Ss to become teachers, we have to stay positive & share the rewards of shaping the future in a format millennials can relate too! #TnEdChat
#TNEdChat A4-Stop the negative! Collaborate, support, encourage...and (my son, a current teacher candidate says) money. For me, a 30+ veteran...How do we get communities to value education, and their teachers? Feeling respected and appreciated goes a long way.
Y'all..love the fact that I can interact & communicate with other educators as well as our state ed commissioner @McQueenCandice on a SNOW day!! These people are amazing! Can't read all the tweets fast enough! #TNedchat
A3: Effective PD starts with Ts/Ldr mindset. No one is beyond growth. We have to enter PD hungry for ways to improve our practice. Next, always great idea to have Ts lead PD as much as possible. Finally, we can learn from Ss. Having Ss lead PD sessions is awesome! #TnEdChat
