Welcome to the ! Please introduce yourself and tell if you use the term cootie catcher or fortune teller https://t.co/y7Iozvp3Y2
Hi I'm Zac from Lecanto, FL and it is definitely a cootie catcher!
Hey , I'm Sean in St. Augustine, FL, 3rd grade, and I'm all for cootie catcher.
Hi Everyone! So happy to be here! Kathy from CT
Hello ! Jacie from Pittsburgh checking in. Is our response supposed to tell our age?? https://t.co/6d6iAOTN8l
Welcome to the ! Please introduce yourself and tell if you use the term cootie catcher or fortune teller https://t.co/y7Iozvp3Y2
I'm connecting with my - plz pardon volume of posts (and think about dropping in, they're fab!)
Hey . I refer to those foldables as fortune tellers...never heard the other phrase.
Hey Kathy! What's shaking?
Hey Jacie, no, I think it's prob. regional.
Hi - Marifran, hs librarian from NY who can still fold a mean fortune teller
Looking forward to learning tonight
Was thinking it might be regional...
Hi ! Glad to be here tonight.
The world is wide enough for both. Howdy Stacey!
Hi, Kimberly from Daytona Beach & I prefer fortune teller. Ah, the memories finding out who I would marry--Shaun C. or Leif G?
Good afternoon (4:03 PDT in Arizona) ! urbie, instructional designer (currently doing hard-time as a project manager).. cooties?
you and must bring out the best in me
It's the K-R-I to the S-T-In!
hi Kristin two nights in a row I'm feeling good!
I promise not to make this a spiral NB convo...
hey Kim, liking this chatting more often thing! I get to see my friends
I think it might have been a sleep away camp thin too - us day camp kids called 'me fortune tellers
Seriously, you're gonna confiscate 'em either way...
Hi, Zac! Great to see you again!
I always joined in...Love the creativity I saw in them.
okay, now that's showing our age! And I know exactly who you're speaking of
Oh, sure, and for the most part, until you see what Bryce wrote in HIS. O.o
Got it! I was thinking: Fortune teller teaching before the 21st century. Cootie catchers after. https://t.co/tdfWxY4d1L
Was thinking it might be regional...
A1 Paper teaches a need for spatial planning and design.
A1 Hmm.. working with real objects vs digital makes it visible (assuming there are peers nearby) and enables shared prototyping
A1 Staci from TX joining - Fine motor skills, creativity, the wonder of seeing something you created as a tangible thing!
A1 I think that working out ideas on paper helps connect thinking and content. It also gives Ss a chance to develop craft.
A1. Visual/spatial problem-solving, getting creative with color schemes. Plus they can hang them up-uh, oh! Tiger Beat thought!
A1 So paper-based objects make it easier to converse & manipulate ideas.
A1: I think it helps organize thoughts and express creativity more organically
A1: for some of us the poster is torture but for others a real moment to shine - I still remember poster makers from my ES
Handmade posters are a must for fine motor skills, but especially so kids can use Mr. Sketch markers! 😀
I know you're kidding, but I think that handmade makes good prototyping for tech solutions. (and vice versa)
Which is why Options and Choices are the real winner of the day!
As long as I don't have to smell them! (The markers that is!) ;)
I like the vice versa. I use paper/pencil to plan tech and tech to plan some paper/pencil.
- & an opportunity to step outside comfort zone OR be the expert
Two sides of the coin, both SO powerful!
A1: Yes, it is also good for collaborating on a larger scale...chart paper, wall-sized drawings, etc.
I agree with the prototyping, planning is such an important aspect of creating, and sometimes kids need to scratch it out
A2 My students LOVE paper! They love to create. They love to do posters.
A2 SUCH a lazy question - Most of the things I teach can be put into poster/infographic form!
A1 The Edgar Allan POEster project. Ss gained so much through gallery walk feedback & reflection. https://t.co/idV40blEJ3
Yes! Student choice is important. Let Ss choose the medium that they want to use- digital or not. https://t.co/5lKhcThStd
- & an opportunity to step outside comfort zone OR be the expert
I love the idea of being the expert, so powerful when Ss can teach peers https://t.co/faWs9iSCF2
- & an opportunity to step outside comfort zone OR be the expert
And this is why the handle should be y https://t.co/o151dzCUwG
I like the vice versa. I use paper/pencil to plan tech and tech to plan some paper/pencil.
A2 I don't think the *type* of info changes w analog curation, but *how* we curate changes with paper/pencil.
with the amount of online testing that my school does, any opp to make posters and projects breaks the mold
A2 I think that there are some things that beg to be shown with movement, or in 3D, but flat definitely covers a lot of ground.
A2 Probably showing how ideas progressed (versions) over time?
Shhh...don't blow up my spot ;0)
Timelines do a good job of hinting at the 4th D.
Hiya a little late but here i am - I love paper!
A2 A few things we've done: Genre anchor charts, board games and story quilts for book club, diagrams/charts to analyze text.
I agree with what's said, most can be done on paper, publishing, connecting, global collab how we can expand with tech
A2 Our students will be making Wanted posters or campaign posters of Genghis Khan depending on their opinion of them
are you straying into diorama territory? I had a killer one in first grade - Where the Wild Things Are
Hi good to be back missed a few lately
Running the Tech Line for our district tonight and I haven't had any paper questions lol
I learned about from this group. My Ss love it. Some really shine!
Briefly jumping into A2: The limited space on a poster also helps Ss learn HOW to curate - what's important enough to include?
A2 Ooohh.. Out-takes. If making a poster/picture is considered art then there’s all those iterations and offshoots/new ideas.
Yasss! https://t.co/QXalFxcm3c
Briefly jumping into A2: The limited space on a poster also helps Ss learn HOW to curate - what's important enough to include?
all good been trapped a little in PhD & work - time off uni this week so here i am
A2 love paper notetaking, better than tech more fun
of him* Pretty excited about seeing what the kids choose to make!
This is a great point, Ss can copy & paste for days but finding what's important and synthesizing BOOM https://t.co/uV8DteCgtW
Briefly jumping into A2: The limited space on a poster also helps Ss learn HOW to curate - what's important enough to include?
Q3 My students love our in the classroom
A3: some Ss need to open flaps, and turn pages, information overload is a real thing and chunking helps
A3. It can give them perspective as far as how things are sized in relation to each other.
A3 making 3D adds the sense of touch and manipulation it's another element to the learning
A3 Thinking in 3D helps Ss to place learning into life, think about it -literally- from all angles. https://t.co/4Q1CGLL7iU
I really like lap books too. I buy mine though from
Hey all, Derek checking in a little late to . I have never used either term. What the heck are they?
A3 If memory serves I made quite a mess of making stuff K-12.. snippets of paper, globs of glue and glitter.
ah yes but a whole lot of fun!
A3 3D shapes come alive in Math when paper models are created, esp when they are instructed to created but not told *how*.
A3 So I suppose one might argue the resultant mess brings Ss in touch with work/process than digital might.
A3 I observed in a History T class-They were learning origami and made sumo wrestlers for a tournament. I thought it was COOL !
my pre-service Ts had boys making origami -they loved it
Q1 It is important for our students to still use paper stuff b/c it's a diff skill set. Small motor skills are important!
Students begin to think about how and why things are constructed. The basis for engineering + design. https://t.co/tlvqucVEZc
ooooo now there's a blast from the past -I used this for character analysis once
We made a flat scaled map of our cr one year, the Ss loved it!
Thanks! That's what I thought they were.
I am all for any paper projects done in school, particularly when Ss work together - we've witnessed too many parent art shows
I wish! I'm pretty doggone far away. :/
They use a file folder and then attached different things to it
I like this reason for using paper better than mine. Thanks for sharing it! https://t.co/8ItS3ZxgjT
A1 Paper teaches a need for spatial planning and design.
exploding in for half time
I LOVE Mr. Sketch markers! They smell so amazing!
You had a pretty solid answer. Kids are losing those skills...it's scary!
thx for the reminder - I *must* get some of these for my library
My Ss love tape..they love that stuff
A4. My students love working with anything--the bigger the mess the better!
A4 we go on school walks to collect materials/objects that we can turn into artworks
Q2: Ss can curate ANYTHING with paper! I think it's sometimes easier for them to start w/ paper, but not always.
A4: I'm obsessed with glue dots! Scrapbook paper is good too.
I often have my Ss start all of their projects on paper first so they can get a better idea of what's required.
A4 I want them ALL. I want to horde them, guard them, and then I wanna see that idea that makes me give Ss key to the car.
A4 As a T who hates cleaning up a mess, I appreciate the cleanliness of tape. Also like staples and hot glue (T tool only).
A4) Gotta go with cardboard as a favorite material. So many great projects start with a cardboard box.
Exactly! You can do *almost* anything analog that can be done digital. Almost anything.
Oh, it is still a mess. They cannot cut it correctly but I will take it over GLITTER!
it makes me sad when 7 and 8 yr olds struggle w scissors - but boy, can they bang out a bubble sheet
And they think tape works for anything. "I'm making a jetpack, do we have more tape?"
Just like my husband..duck tape will fix anything lol
wrapping paper seems to have the same effect it's sometimes more interesting than the gift!
A4 Lately we are hyper-geeking over richly inking pens/markers that make beautiful science diagrams https://t.co/FcqoabkqOE
I think each realm helps us appreciate the other. Handmade feels like magic after tech, and vice versa!
Makes me cry b/c I have 5th graders who can't tear, cut or glue properly! Where's the creativity?
Awesone exhibit at the Pgh Children's Museum called Tape Scape. Climbing structure made from tape. https://t.co/3PPy1EwyUb
My Ss love tape..they love that stuff
Great way to put it Sean!
washi and duct tape fans, hands up!
My kids love markers so much, but the NICE ones are so wonderful.
When I was taking my comp in grad sch I asked for scissors & tape so I could literally cut & paste my A for revision.
A4 If I say, "I want this done in all crayon." Half of the work will be done in sharpie.
A4: my son likes duck tape, scissors, glue, Popsicle sticks, paper clips, cardstock, sharpies
A3 paper is quickly cut/torn/crumpled/folded/doubled/glued/curled/inked it makes for fast engineering https://t.co/9bEHrngwxq
Glitter...the ______ of craft supplies!
A3 When Ss are allowed to create 3D things out of paper & analog tools they can better see how things fit/work.
A4: I'm really partial to tape but there are these giant purple glue sticks (uhu, maybe?) that are pretty darn magical
I avoid glitter at ALL costs!
I like living in both worlds!
They're not always the best listeners, 8 & 9 year olds.
I bet there are some awesome creations made out of those supplies! That's great!
. Absolutely! Using my extra fancy packs is an earned privilege for students. We love from
Plus, who doesn't like building physical things? I know I do and so do many of my students! That's why is so good!
A1: I think kids get to express themselves artistically with paper and pencil in a more authentic way than using tech
They're not the only ones who have trouble with listening skills!
Oh, Erin, you gotta @ the companies! Make them love you for loving them!
I'm the same Stacey. I'm a addict who also happens to LOVE tools!
They're ALMOST as bad as the teachers.
It does help, but it also makes you want to pull your hair out while making them!
A5 I just hope I have enough colours to satisfy all their tastes!
A5. Where can I store the partially-completed projects?
Yep! says I have a misnomer for a handle.
A4 - liquid glue (we call it "forever" glue), scissors that fit their hands, gel pens, Crayola markers!
A4 My kids liked all that but not too fond of the three-fold poster/foam board. Grand kid likes anything with a texture.
A5 How many days extra am I going to have to give the meticulous kids?
A5: Allowing time for clean-up! Not leaving a mess for the maintenance staff.
Yeah, Shavon doesn't need that mess!
A2: students can literally put anything into poster format...represent understanding of topics or comprehension of reading
I agree 100% with that Marifran! Too many parents think they need to do it for their kids!
is a powerful learning path for many kids. So many materials to explore, so little time! https://t.co/vqt6xqyw7C
Plus, who doesn't like building physical things? I know I do and so do many of my students! That's why is so good!
Not a fan of crayons. I don't like the way they feel and leave little bits everywhere.
A5 -make sure it's actually doable and try it first, save old projects as examples, offer creative challenges (color, 3D, etc)
A4 My students like to work with EVERYTHING! They will use it all! I've kind of made them into little !
I always stress to the kids that my example is the BORING one, please make yours cooler.
A5 Cleanup at the end.. put that out there up front so no surprises later.
I love shiny things!! But not glitter! You will never clean it all up! https://t.co/T4LWYK5lhE
I avoid glitter at ALL costs!
A4 Gotta have markers, colored pencils, crayons, posters, glue, all sort of papers, etc. I say have they whole workroom!
Thanks! An extra step that often saves time!
Yes! Storage and display are huge considerations especially if it's going to be 3D. https://t.co/wjl3HGyCbl
A5. Where can I store the partially-completed projects?
Thanks for sharing this link!
Nice! Got some cool markers in my box!
You are welcome! I get a lot from Easier than making it myself. Ss love them.
I think the Easter Bunny got tired of losing me to the stationery section at Target
Great idea! I don't often think of cardboard but should!
One thing I *DETEST* is glitter! No glitter in my room at all b/c then it NEVER leaves!
So true! The custodians give me an earful when our learning space is a mess. https://t.co/h5k18W1GvO
A5: Allowing time for clean-up! Not leaving a mess for the maintenance staff.
one of my responses was glitter. I’ve heard from Ts it’s rough on cleanups.
oh, yes - got that for my big kid! It was warmly received, for sure
I've found some on my chest a month later. NO idea how it got there.
A6 Remind Ss to take what they will use & not throw out the scraps until the END. You never know what's useful.
Sometimes I have to tell them to throw out as they begin to use the as the trash! https://t.co/3d1cJbLgwo
A6 Remind Ss to take what they will use & not throw out the scraps until the END. You never know what's useful.
I need to use it...and my membership!
I'm tellin' ya, Stacey - you and me, we need to go bowling
A1. Paper has endless possibilities. We designed cowboy boots and what they would do on a ranch. https://t.co/s6tUgtsyqO
A3: 3D reps of things can help them understand what our world is made of: not just 2D pics on paper that they usually make.
I'm also a big proponent of recycling anything that is unused, unless it's *teeny tiny* scraps. Those can go in the trash.
And Ts, let go of the control of supplies. Stop asking, "Can I use---" This is YOUR space Ss! Just go and get what you need!
thanks! Love stumbling on chats! Twitter chats are my lateral production almost every night!
Anytime! Can we put up bumpers?!?
A6: the students creativity
Those are pretty nice looking markers Marifran. Better hope isn't around or she might "borrow" them!
A6. Pinterest as a jumping off place, our chats here, and then let students take over!
You too, Ross. You both need to put in a proposal for so we can hang * lrn for the WE!
have to duck out thanks for the chat see you next time! :)
Really Stacey? No love for crayons? So sad for a GREAT art medium!
close cousins of glitter (and you know how just about everybody in this room feels about that stuff...)
A4: my students use a variety of materials. I find each student is comfortable with different tools
This is fun to do with paper scraps at end-of-year!
A6 Old school books and crafting magazines (I have a TON in my basement) and of course!
But I sometimes *like* to have them try new things just to see if they are possible.
See ya' Jo! Have a great rest of the week!
Blech. I would take anything over crayons!
for me, the answer is usually bowling... Or cowbell
Watch out, you may get a package of all crayons in the future!
A5: the only consideration I make is how long it'll take the poor custodial crew to clean it up!
As in running, or "we need more cowbell!"?
A6 We used to make pop-up books for a book project, but haven't done that one in a while.
I buy them doughnuts and soda on the day after the last day for teachers. I know my room is a pain.
A5 Having everything ready, and in quantity, ahead of time so supplies don't get in the way of creativity, maintain the flow
I'm never home in time for :(
Me too! Makes the stationery look fancy! Ross, are you North Jersey? (I'm thinking yes).
Thanks for a great fun as always chat
always more cowbell! (And on the course, too - excellent point)
is popping in! We must be making a dent in the world! Hey Jerry!
Thanks for hanging with us, Kathy!
A6 We surf globally for papercraft in other locales - the Ss are super motivated by origami masters. https://t.co/qhAikQL27C
And that is the best part! Letting students use what they feel comfortable with is the best!
Thanks so much, everyone! This was fun!
Skipping out early - need to retrieve my shot putter from the track team bus. Thx for a great (almost) hour
I think getting back to materials was a nice change!
Thanks for checking us out, Andrew!
And I make sure I have enough time to allow the students to do the majority of the cleaning before they leave.
One of the best ways to spend a Tuesday evening! Thanks for some fun
I love it when you're here, Stacey!
Hi ! Sorry for being late. Trying to locate questions to answer. Better late than never!! :)
Thanks, Sean! I am always sad when I miss
A7 How do you use poetry that gets students excited?
What types of poetry have your students liked the best & why?
Since the pencil sharpener has been replaced by a charging station I wanted to share my pages. Get the point!
Oh nooooo! It saved sideways!
A7 Lets talk about our fav tools and why we like them so much.
sweet! Thank you!! stay tuned!
