Ryan, 8th Grade US history, Olathe. I enjoy the summer becomes I get to recharge in the great outdoors, but I love fall the most: start of school, football, & cooler weather. #xplap
Hi all! Stefanie from Illinois. Winter, and especially the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’sis my favorite time of year, but any time of year with friends and family is good. #XPLAP
DianaLyn, Middle School science teacher from TX. I can't pick a favorite time of year as they each have benefits, but I love dusk. There is something magical when all the colors blend into a monochromatic pallet. #XPLAP
Hi! Jocelyn, from Toronto, Digital Literacy Teacher. My FAVE time of year is fall when the maple leaves start to change here in Ontario, and the breeze just gets a little cooler! #XPLAP
I love this answer… It is so fun to have you here now that I have met you in person! Love your energy! Thanks for making it to Spark. Hope to see you next year! #XPLAP
🌞🍦Hey, #XPLAP Crew! I'm Kimberly from Nebraska, and I teach 7th grade ELA! I love all seasons for different reasons, but... I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE SUMMER! 🌞🍦
It’s that time of night on Tuesday... it’s time for #XPLAP! I’m Dwight from the beautiful Adirondack mountains & my favorite time of year is mountain time... which really just means all the time!
A1: I've worked 3 Doors Down music into work time for group work and quiz fun music during bonus rounds. Really motivates and gets Ss working great. #xplap
A1
🌞🍦SUNSET TIMER! I totally stole @mrmatera's idea from #DitchSummit and tried to spice up my timers. I loved using something other than a numerical countdown! #XPLAP 🍦🌞
A1: I used this year for a Lego build challenge for vocabulary. Ss had one class period to create representations of 5 Gilded Age vocab words using a limited amount of Legos. So much fun to watch them rise to the challenge. Instant engagement! #xplap
I made a thing. Day one: Solve eight asynchronous puzzles in small teams to earn custom badges inspired by @FortniteGame. Day two: cash in badges for specialty upgrades to give your team a leg up in the #MarshmallowChallenge. #xplap#studentcentered#playlap
A1: I really like using on the clock to keep quick formative partner discussions concise while and the lesson moving forward. "What do you think is most important about X... you have 1 minute to chat with your neighbor." Seems to work well. #xplap
A1: I would like to insert a mechanic that boosts the value of handing in early and takes away value if it's handed in late. Could see it working in a single class too. #xplap
A1: I like to post quick quests that have a time limit… Put on their online learning targets a super easy quest… Only those that notice will get it done. #XPLAP
Hello all! I'm new to #XPLAP chat, but I'm excited to learn. I'm from the Joliet area, and I teach hs 11-12 English. I heard from @mrmatera at #usmspark and was hooked on #gamification from the word go!
A1: I've started giving students timed challenge quests instead of longer projects and the results weren't that different. Having the time limit forces them to make some decisions and stick with them. #xplap
Hello everyone! First timer here. I'm Dustin from Missouri and I teach Government and US History. My favorite time of year is Summer so I can watch Cardinals baseball! #XPLAP
A1: timer music went with my theme of Harry Potter by using Hedwig’s theme. When the timer went off, kids would hum/make instrument noises along with it. It helped solidify my theme. #XPLAP
A1 I use music as a timer for the last few minutes of team activities. The Final Countdown gets the kids going, but I usually mix it up. Also use music to time out daily expectations like transitions. #xplap
A1: (2) many of the my games had time limits, and Ss knew it would be the last detail dropped. They would anxiously wait for that part of the challenge and then ask for fine checks throughout. #XPLAP
A1: I have used a generic timer in the past, but recently created a YouTube playlist of a bunch that’d timer options for me to use this upcoming years. Different time lengths and music. Hoping it will save ME time 🤞. #xplap
A1: One of my favorite games to play with my friends is Catchphrase. Once that timer gets going in the background, kids love trying to get the answer before that stressful timer runs out. #XPLAP
I use the app 30/30 sometimes to make a layout of time… 3 minutes talking with partners, 2 minutes no talking, back to 1 min talking… That kind of thing… It is fun to see the students strategies around this timer… It is free. Check it out! #XPLAP
A1 teaching history makes it easy to use time on a classwide or lessonwide scale. My game concept centers on a whimsically inept time travel agency. Units and activities frequently have us jumping in time. https://t.co/8WCMyL47Cq#XPLAP
A1: (2) When teaching about the role of government this year, I gave the students a minute of anarchy (At least somewhat controlled chaos, though Ss soon realized why we have gov't & law) while I played a minute of Anarchy in the UK. https://t.co/UfHeaDAGxc#xplap
A2: I have Ss earn their XP points and earn my power ups, each one can empower a student to do something different with their lessons and projects. Allowing them to choose how they can create. #xplap
A2: I could see some powerups work with my A1 answer, which would have items allow for assignments to come in late without the penalty, or to earn the bonus when handed in on time. #xplap
A2: I have an item that can only be earned on a side quest, and allows the holder to turn in a side quest 3 days late. During some challenges or boss battles, there are items that can unlock extra time as well. #xplap
I had a Time Turner in my Harry Potter themed game. The usage was vaguely written, so students came up with all sorts of ways to use it: stop someone from using a power up, turn in something on time instead of late, etc. #xplap
A2: My kiddos liked the “Trap” card they could play… It slowed teams down during builds by putting there equipment across the room. They had to go around tables to get some legos… In a time challenge… This hurts. #XPLAP
A2: I combine using a talking piece with a time ( stuffed animal, etc.) for speaking practice, as well as “speed dating” in lines facing each other for conversation practice. #XPLAP
A2 This year I used power ups that gave the students a minute or 2 minutes of time to look in their notebook with a friend during a quiz. Time starts once they open their notebooks. It was a good incentive to take and organize their notes well. #xplap
A2: I have bonus cards that give students extra minutes on a challenge in class, freeze time for another group, allow them extra time on an assignment #XPLAP
A2: Up here we have to deal with the occasional ice storm which freezes everything up... Could be a fun thing powerup to allow time to be frozen up for a certain amount of time. Use dice to determine how long it will take to thaw, etc. #xplap
A2: My kiddos liked the “Trap” card they could play… It slowed teams down during builds by putting there equipment across the room. They had to go around tables to get some legos… In a time challenge… This hurts. #XPLAP
A2: Another great addition to time in any thing you do is to add the rules to Red Light Green Light to what you are doing… Seriously, it is funny and fun… I don’t care if it is a test or a lego build… It is funny. #XPLAP
A2: (2) loved the Gemino Curse which allowed Ss to curse another group so that they had to produce double the product in the original time constraint. #XPLAP
My kids kept wanting me to make a doubling charm, but I pointed out that in the HP universe, the extras created by the charm are rendered useless. #xplap
✨✨BLING! BLING! As total amateur gamers, @DebDiToro and I came up with bling (close to glitter, but sounded better)! It was kind of XP, but kind of a power-up too! Students could use it to buy more time/chances or eliminate penatly points. #XPLAP✨✨
A2: My school just became 1 to 1 this summer (YAY!!) so most of my game was not in the digital world. My students loved getting badges added to the board or finding Lando (Easter Egg). Either of these could be used to add time to a part of the game. #XPLAP
The school I'm moving to has a mascot of the Titans. I'm thinking I'll do a Camp Half-Blood/Camp Jupiter theme with the two classes I'll teach (some kids will overlap). Kronos appearing could definitely be a thing that slows down time. #xplap
#XPLAP I'm quickly learning I have not fully thought through all the potential nuances of the game...and that's ok. That's when I can learn from this community!!
A2: We have a year long challenge where classes compete to solve rebuses. Their times accumulate all year long but they can deduct time(or add to an opponenet) for doing something excellent. #XPLAP
The best part is you don’t have to have it all worked out… Add as you go… This is a plane that will fly with just your imagination… You can fill in the seats later. #XPLAP
I have sent out a request to help clean up the lab. It is only available the first 10 minutes after class, and XP/badge is only added if the lab is clean by the end of the 10 minutes. Great response and I get a clean lab!!! #XPLAP
A3 - I want to make sure students receive notification from their google classroom so I'm planning to give XP if they reply to my post within 5 minutes #XPLAP
thinking about adding the snap chat streak 🔥🔥🔥 for islands ready for class to earn extra XP next year! Going to make a wall for the class to see and the Island with the best streak wins! #xplap
A3: I'm working on a way to give students who are ON TIME FOR CLASS a bonus. Roll a dice for some sort of bonus? Everyone there enters a draw to win an item? Some sort of motivation to actually show up before the buzzer. #xplap
A3 In 4th grade, my students often need to learn how to review and prepare for quizzes. Maybe an online meetup game where kids can earn xp and it will help them study for a quiz. #xplap
I made it known to my kids that I would be making it up as we go, and that I valued their input. A lot of the available side quests were creating items and badges for me, and they earned extra XP if I actually used their idea. #xplap
#XPLAP A3: for my seniors, they love having time to work on their mandatory research paper in class. While not always relaxing, they would have time to work and ask questions.
A3: Maybe working as a squad after school earns extra XP on a quest or possibly unlocks an Easter Egg or hidden side quest. Could also do this for being first to class on a challenge day, esp. if tardies are a chronic issue. #xplap
A3: Happy hours help adults relax and unwind after tough weeks. We can use them in our classes to help them laugh, smile, and have fun together after something demanding in our games or class. #XPLAP
A3: I'm thinking some Easter Egg or hidden side quests. Looking at being first to class or by a certain time. Keeps, great for working on tardies. #xplap
We use Schoology. I have done similar where they have to respond to a prompt by a specific time. It usually requires a bit of research and application of knowledge. They can only turn it in during a specific time. #XPLAP
I only did my first gamified activity at the end of this year... conceptualized it over a weekend, got it started, and was adding elements right up to the very end. It was organic, and was a nice balance of pushing & uplifting students through the challenges. #XPLAP Have fun!
A3 I like hiding easter eggs, secret side quests, QR codes, funny videos, even a way to join the mysterious Time Resisistence in assignments and our class website. Gotta be in the right spot to find them! #XPLAP
A3✨✨
FREESTYLE FRIDAY! The last 5-10 minutes of class on Friday's, they can showcase anything they want! Students write and perform lyrics, dance, play instruments, gymnastics, etc. They could earn bling (points) in our classroom game, but not guaranteed!✨✨
#XPLAP
A3: As a pastor, I am still trying to get my congregation to see worship on a Sunday morning as a #HappyHour for your spirit! 🤣 #XPLAP#LoLfaith#ChristianEd
A3: The Lando Easter egg worked most of the time . . . not during my observation but Hey they were excited about the game! They then got to play a game of chance to win more XP. #XPLAP
A3: #ideaflood side quests were some of the most popular quests completed by the widest variety of Ss. It was freeing and creative with no real rules except to flood the paper with things they associated about that idea. We built relationships + they earned XP and had fun #XPLAP
It truly was. The smiles on their faces at the end of it. A pair of teams dueling it out over clues during lunch... Not to mention a usually quiet reserved student hoisting the skull above her head like the Stanley Cup was amazing! #xplap
I hope you all have registered for #HiveSummit at https://t.co/qayKAxzmlD and invited about 1000 of your friends… It is going to be great. Help out… Post it on FACE BOOK and your myspace ;) #XPLAP
A3: Like your #HiveSummit that is teaching PD, but only available for a specific time, limit access to power-ups and bonuses to time-sensitive videos. Learning Happy Hour! #XPLAP
Oh, yes! I've got 1 quarter of classroom gamification under my belt, and totally loved it! Just hoping to keep the year spicy enough that they don't lose interest! #XPLAP
In reply to
@PerkyScience, @KaraDoenges, @mrmatera
I am registered! #ChristianEd teachers come join the fun and the learning! So much we can take back to our Sunday School classrooms, our Confirmation classes, our Youth Group meetings, and even our Adult Ed! #LoLfaith#XPlap

OMG! You are a mind reader because that is EXACTLY what happened! I wouldn't give BLING points though if their lyrics were roasting another team or negative though, but honestly... those were some of THE BEST raps! #XPLAP
Whoa. This could be awesome. A Google Form that is set up in a branching manner where correct answers continue and the incorrect answer goes straight to the end. XP is divied up based on results. This could be awesome! #xplap
Whoa. This could totally be set up easily. A Google Form that is set up in a branching manner where correct answers continue and the incorrect answer goes straight to the end. YouTube clips to ask the questions. XP is divied up based on results. This could be awesome! #xplap
Five twitter chats in just under 4 hours. #FlipgridFever was INTENSE, and #5thchat threw me for a loop, I didn't realize when they met, but I managed to (mostly) keep up. Thanks everyone, for the fun night of learning! #CodeBreaker#KahootChat#xplap
