Hey #waledchat! I'm here, but not really here tonight. I am running on a schedule through @TweetDeck because I am on a daddy-daughter date night with my Micaiah. At the @Chicago_Wolves game this evening. :) I would be thrilled if @MissKasprzak and @MsJachymiak could join in.

A1: I have a student who is very quiet and very tough on himself. I have tried to reach out to him everyday I have seen him this week and build him up. Students need someone to believe in them! #waledchat
A1 Every day I enjoy opportunities to connect and talk with our students. Got to give positive feedback to a student of @MrPStrunk about an awesome project #waledchat
A1. This week was hard. We have been working on our formal writing piece and it’s a very abstract way of thinking. I showed Ss I cared by listening to them, proof reading w/ them and not letting them give up! #waledchat
A1: I showed my students I care for them by doing what I do every day - talking to them about their lives outside of school. A quick check in is all it takes to form that important connection. #waledchat
#waledchat A1: read aloud personal praise for each student. Told them why I admire them, why we are thankful they are in the class, what role they play that is so important. 1st time I ever did anything like that.
A1: A student of mine was frustrated today with a more difficult assignment. I read the irritation in his body language, grabbed a stress ball, and asked him to just play catch with me for a little bit. Turned his entire attitude around. #waledchat
A1 Since I don't have students, I showed care to those I collaborate with. Daily videos, challenges and fun exchanges with my little peeps in Floriday in @bmilla84 's clas. I love watching their @Flipgrid videos. I love exchanging messages & sending gifts. #waledchat
A1: Had a teacher team/parent meeting to show a S that we all care &want him to be successful. Made a plan to help him on a better path. Also, student council "warm&fuzzies" helped Ts & Ss make mini connections with meaningful compliments all day! I got the best notes! #waledchat
A1: Showing care for students is often most powerful in the little things. Simply notice the little pieces of greatness and ensure they know. Model humility and #failing forward while constantly cultivating relationships.
#waledchat
A1: I showed lots of smiles, and took time to have one on one conversations with some kids I don’t necessarily get the chance to. I also handed out some sweets for a little something extra! #waledchat
A1. Amongst all the tragedy this week, we have had some personal tragedy. Doing my best to comfort these kids. Sometimes a hug does the trick. Sometimes the S's just need a place to cry. Don't turn them away! #waledchat
A1: I listened to their complaints about their workload and gave them time in class to work on their homework. I let them decompress with me a lot, and just listen. #waledchat
A1) Stop, listen, respond. I spend a lot of time talking with each one. My Ss know that if they ask to speak to me outside, they have my full undivided attention! #waledchat
I hand wrote individual valentine notes telling the, how and why I appreciate having the opportunity to get to know them...and gave candy of course with it #waledchat
Thank you! That is an amazing compliment and I am humbled. I truly enjoy learning with you all and exchanging many ideas. You are both wonderful! #waledchat
A1: I asked them how they felt after the unfortunate and horrific school shooting. I let them know that my classroom is a safe space to share their concerns. #waledchat
A1- #waledchat same thing as every day! Greeting them, positive feedback, remembering personal things they share with me (ie. favourite sport) also taking time to listen. <- most important
A1: I showed care for my students this week by trying to understand rather than assuming I knew the problem. 1st Grade feelings and problems were solved and students were encouraged because of a little extra patience! #waledchat
A1: I emailed a positive email to a parent of a student who has been having a tough transition to middle school but has been an absolute rockstar. Her parents shared the email on Facebook which was heartwarming to see. I took time to listen and really care. #waledchat
A1: We did course recommendations this week for 8th graders. I pulled each of my students and told them why I made the recommendation I did, and what I think they can accomplish moving forward. I gave them individualized goals to finish the year strong. #waledchat
A1 I showed care by planning some fun Olympic STEM challenges. The Ss had fun doing something different. Smiling along the way helped. Nobody likes a grumpy T. Also just stopped and chatted with a few former Ss in passing shows you care to listen. #waledchat
A1: Showed up with a smile! I keep food in my office for my neice but any child who is hungry can come get something to eat. That open door policy is how I care! #waledchat
A1 I talked to them, not at them, gave compliments, delivered sick make up work, bought donuts and created engaging lessons and built in chill/study time in class. #waledchat
A1 I have a S with whom I really struggle--we constantly butt heads. However, I know he loves Minecraft, so I integrated a Minecraft question into an assignment and saw his face beam! #waledchat
A1 I showed my students I cared by holding them to a high standard of excellence. They’re learning to annotate and it’s hard and they’re getting it. Also by getting legos for my classroom.
#waledchat
A2: Because you never know who needs it the most. You are a huge part in your Ss lives! If you think about it, your daily job will reach MILLIONS of people indirectly. #waledchat
A1: I let them choose what they wanted/needed to work on. For some it was classwork, for some it was reading, for others it was simply sitting in a quiet space. Choice and voice are my go-tos #waledchat
A2: Authentic learning occurs when there is buy in. And more importantly, sometimes school is the only place where a child can really feel like they matter, and you wouldn't even know it, so make everyone feel important because they are all worth it! #waledchat
A2 Great question @MrPStrunk Kids don’t work for teachers if they think the teacher doesn’t like them- same for principals and teachers-relationships matter #waledchat
A2: We never know what battles these students are fighting. I want my students to leave my room knowing 3 things: they are loved, cared for, and valued. That is my why. I teach students first. #waledchat
A1: I emailed a positive email to a parent of a student who has been having a tough transition to middle school but has been an absolute rockstar. Her parents shared the email on Facebook which was heartwarming to see. I took time to listen and really care. #waledchat
A2 Every student is going through his or her stuff. They need to be noticed and feel like they matter. They deserve the positive attention. For this- I get to really know my kids. #waledchat
A2: You will never get meaningful connections and the greatest work from students if your classroom environment doesn’t instill trust and comfort. You can only hope for compliance and introversion in this setting.
#waledchat
A2: Because you need to the champion that every child needs. Because you spend more time with your students than their parents do. Nurture, love, and empower. #waledchat
#waledchat A2: so they show up even when they otherwise don't feel like it. When they connect your room as a place where they are "needed," they show up prepared. Isn't that true for all of us? Tell me you need me.....I'll do just about anything!
A2 If S's don't feel you care about them and you don't build a relationship with them, they fail to thrive. Kids don't learn from people they don't like #waledchat
A2: You will never get meaningful connections and the greatest work from students if your classroom environment doesn’t instill trust and comfort. You can only hope for compliance and introversion in this setting.
#waledchat
A2 Every student has a story. Every person wants to have a connection. We need to ensure that connection is made before learning occurs. We are there to watch them grow, watch them learn, be there for them. We need to show them their power, strengthen their voice. #waledchat
A2: Every student needs to believe they can be successful for learning to occur. If they struggle, they need to believe their teacher will find a way to help them figure it out. Otherwise, they will shut down and lost motivation. Ss can't thrive if they feel defeated. #waledchat
#waledchat A2- because they do. They all have strengths, they are all different, and each one of them brings something to the classroom. I encourage students to recognize this frequently about eachother. Everyone needs to know they matter!
A2: Because they need consistent support and encouragement. It’s no secret that Ss learn best when they feel safe, cared for, and listened to. Not to mention, they are kids who deserve to have a teacher who cares about them, not just their grades. #waledchat
Love how you worded this. You are right, if a student feels like they matter, even on the tough days they will still buy into what you are selling! #waledchat
A2) If they do not feel important, they will not engage. Many of us come to Twitter because we do not feel important on our campuses. And we want to engage! Stop the madness! CARE! #waledchat
A2: everyone needs to know they are cared for and special. I want the best for my Ss and when they know I care they are able to open up, make mistakes, & learn.#waledchat
Q3: Were there any moments in the past week where you noticed you missed an opportunity to show a student how much you cared about them? How can you remedy that next class?
#waledchat
A2 Ss aren't going to work for you if they don't think you care. They need to know that you're there for them bc you respect them and want the best for them and not just there for they paycheck (however much or little it is!) #waledchat
A2: Every student needs to believe they can be successful for learning to occur. If they struggle, they need to believe their teacher will find a way to help them figure it out. Otherwise, they will shut down and lost motivation. Ss can't thrive if they feel defeated. #waledchat
A1: Visited the home of a new student. Encouraged our players and talked to them about their games this week. Visited classrooms and talked to Ss about what they were learning. #waledchat
A2: Sprry I’m late. Was at a play by some former students. Ours may be the only place a child feels@loved and cared for. A student told me a couple@weeks ago that I’m the only teacher that showed him he mattered. Not patting my back, but showing it’s a need! #waledchat
A2 I don’t need English to be their favorite subject or to be their favorite teacher. But when they’re in my classroom, I want them to be their favorite version of themselves.
#waledchat
A3: Happens all the time. I'll miss something that the kids are saying (or not directly saying), and I don't ask the right question. They don't mind, but I always circle back around the next day to own my failure. #waledchat
A3: I had some Ss not treating a classmate very nicely. I stopped it, but I wish I would have done more. I always feel like I can do more when I reflect on these situations. I want to emphasize next class that words can be hurtful and remind them meanness is a big NO! #waledchat
A2) Trust goes a long way. When kids know they are cared for, they will share what is causing distress in their life and allow us to help problem solve. #waledchat
A2 Student agency and ownership. Can't have this without then feeling a strong sense of belonging. Can't imagine buying into anything that I didn't truly feel part of. A non negotiable. #waledchat
A3 I was absent- due to flu- when a couple of students needed me to cheer lead them. I felt terrible. I felt like I let them down. I wish I never had to miss so I could be with them every minute. #waledchat
A3: For me, I once missed a huge stride for a student because it didn’t complete the project when it was due. I missed the power of growth looking to complete grades. I went back later and gave the grade I knew was deserved and congratulated the student.
#waledchat
A3: I have had a rough two days. My CT has been out, and I feel like I am being pushed in many directions; however, I keep smiling and reaching out to my PLN to get that support. I oftentimes do not feel like I am making a difference, but I know that my Ss care. #waledchat
A3: frustration creeps in and we lose sight of what matters: the time we spend w kids having meaningful convos, watching a great lesson, working w a family. Those moments are fuel for the days where you can’t get past the frustration alone. #waledchat
Q3: Were there any moments in the past week where you noticed you missed an opportunity to show a student how much you cared about them? How can you remedy that next class?
#waledchat
A2: It is important because THEY are important. Our kids need to know they are loved and valued. When they don't feel it, we have awful situations that arise. I think this goes well beyond achieving in class or on state tests. This is a matter way, way more important. #waledchat
A1: We dedicated all of today’s class to a discussion about the shooting in Florida. I made sure to repeatedly mention that I am there for any of them to talk to at ANY time about ANYTHING. #waledchat
A3: I had a student refer to another student as a nerd for reading a comic book and I exclaimed that if that’s the case then their teacher is the biggest nerd. I forgot to pull that kid to the side later and tell him how cool he is. #waledchat
A3 I had a bunch of Ss that wanted me to read some of the poems they created in Social Studies and i didn't get to read one girls. I was disappointed but i'll put her first next week #waledchat
A3: Yes. I was short with a S because I was frustrated about something else - bad timing, wrong place at the wrong time for them. I should have taken a breath & remedied the situation, but I let the day get away from me & never checked back in to apologize. Tomorrow. #waledchat
A2: Make your room the safe haven. We don't know what they go home to every day nor what their stuggle in school will be like during the rest of the day or what is was like before they got to our class. My class may be the only chance they get to be heard. #waledchat
A3: A S struggled with a new concept in another class this week and I didn't take the time to help him connect the concept to his mastery in my class. Afraid he lost confidence. Already built time in to next week to address and build his success #waledchat
A3 all. the. time. I always wish I could table a lesson to ask .... about that frown....why the tear... was that all your lunch .... I wish there were two of me in my classroom- one to facilitate learning, one to build relationships!! #waledchat
A3 Straying away from the question a bit, but reminding myself to find something, some kind of connection with each kid, even when they make it hard to do. #waledchat
A3: while my preservice T is rocking it and the kids are connecting w/her it is difficult for me to be out and away from them. I strart taking over again next week, it will be good to get back in the saddle again. #waledchat
A3 I wanted to do more for certain students for #RAKWEEK2018 and with my collaboration connections. I keep finding myself running after time and getting lost in priorities. It is not an excuse, but it is sadly a reality. I will make up for it! #waledchat
Q3: Were there any moments in the past week where you noticed you missed an opportunity to show a student how much you cared about them? How can you remedy that next class?
#waledchat
A3: Admittedly, there were several. Sometimes I am so overwhelmed by everything on my plate that I fail to notice things in front of me. This time of year is hard due to the special ed side of my job. Paperwork takes over, and sadly, I feel like I let the Ss down. #waledchat
A2: Ss will not give their best or push their own personal limits unless they know that they are cared for. In a welcoming environment, all Ss can be their best #waledchat@MrPStrunk
A3: We have morning duty on a 6 wk schedule. This was my week. I always feel rushed & frazzled when I get back to the classroom due to not having morning prep time. I noticed my fuse was shorter in the mornings due to that. For the next 5 weeks, I'm duty free! #waledchat
Q3: Were there any moments in the past week where you noticed you missed an opportunity to show a student how much you cared about them? How can you remedy that next class?
#waledchat
A3: I probably do all the time. I try to notice everyone but there is a difference between them knowing you see them and them knowing you care. That takes time and effort some days some might be missed while dealing with the more visible fires #realtalk#waledchat
Q3: Were there any moments in the past week where you noticed you missed an opportunity to show a student how much you cared about them? How can you remedy that next class?
#waledchat
A3: A student was sharing why he was feeling anxious/upset. I listened but didn’t press for too many details because it seemed very sensitive. I’m hoping he understood I want to help, and didn’t just cut the conversation. #waledchat
A3 I got really bogged down in work and stress and I was dismissive of one of my Ss who asks a lot of seemingly trivial questions. I know they matter to that S as my Qs matter to me #waledchat
A3 This week has been bonkers - grading stories in verse, starting a new unit, giving an EMPOWER training, Mardi Gras, Love Is Love Is Love poetry event, Lunar New Year – I bet I missed a LOT of opportunities to show kids I care. But I tried. And they know. #waledchat
A4 I always try to take time to connect with all staff in our school-custodians- food service- office staff-teachers - All are needed for our success and I appreciate all of them #waledchat
A4: There are many people that I have greetings for in the morning, "What up Kop?" for @misskoplin "TODD, TODD, TODD, TODD!" for @ToddRisser, and more! I work with amazing people and it is my hope that spending part of my morning talking to them helps encourage them! #waledchat
A4: By asking them questions about them and what they are interested/involved in. By paying attention to the slight changes day-to-day, then following up with them. Asking questions goes a long way. #waledchat
Q3: Were there any moments in the past week where you noticed you missed an opportunity to show a student how much you cared about them? How can you remedy that next class?
#waledchat
A2: All too often, we see what happens with the kids that are the outcasts; the kids that don’t “fit in”. We have to remember that for some kids, the time they spend at school, and more importantly, in our classroom is the best part of their day. Make it count. #waledchat
A3 I honestly can't think of a time that happened this week. I did have a S very upset today and I spent a lot of time trying to get to the bottom of his pain. Eventually was able to put the pieces together 🤔 #waledchat
A4: We have "MAD About You" cards that we can fill out and leave in mailboxes. A play on our school name and a great way to lift each other up. I try to fill out as many of these as I can #waledchat
A4: I have reached out this year to co-present will colleagues, sent out all resources I can find, and taken time in the evenings to support & celebrate them via social media. Like #thelegend@MrPStrunk.
#waledchat
A3: Our job is never done... papers, forms, and organization will never be completed... but one thing I STRIVE on each and every day is to LISTEN. I listen to the stories of my students, their thoughts and bright ideas. Time goes by ever so quickly, embrace it! #waledchat
A3 Two Ss got into a fight this week. I was so shocked and upset and was too harsh. They made up and I apologized for losing my temper. We all had cake. #waledchat
A3: definitely caught myself in one of those “stay on topic and focus on content” moods this week and missed some relationship building opportunities. Forced myself to get off topic a few times this week to focus on what is really important #waledchat
A3 I passed some Ss in the hall without saying hello. I try to make that effort, especially l when there aren't as many people crowding the halls. I recall a @gcouros quote stating how all Ss and Ts deserved acknowledgement in passing. Made an impact on me. #waledchat
Q3: Were there any moments in the past week where you noticed you missed an opportunity to show a student how much you cared about them? How can you remedy that next class?
#waledchat
A4: A simple text or thank you has gone a long way. After a convo or interaction, I make sure to send a thank. Sometimes even a note in their mailbox . Hope they know how much they are valued #waledchat
A4: Simmons Staff Idols! Each week, two staff are nominated by the previous week's winners. It's a great little boost of positivity at the beginning of each week. #waledchat
A4: I stopped and talked to them, and made a point to have a more meaningful conversation. Sometimes you need more than a “how’s it going?”. #waledchat
A4: I try my best to send encouraging emails and leave random post it notes on my colleagues desks. I spoke to a colleague this morning who said that she had something planned for me, and she told me that the messages mean a lot to her even though she doesnt express it #waledchat
A4 I just always try to be super helpful. I've created a culture where people always stop by with a question or idea. I love being a problem solver and happy to be tech resource for my colleagues. #waledchat
#waledchat A4: Visited 32 (out of 51) Ts this year for observation. Building a spreadsheet of "why this class is awesome" to share at the end of the year. No, I'm not an administrator. Just a T. This is my "free time."
A4 I have sent cards, surprises, gifts, text messages, books, birthday presents. I try to remember that it is the unexpected actions that change someone's day. If I can put a smile on someone's face, I will do it! That is a privilege to me. #waledchat
A3: No doubt we all get distracted at times and forget what’s important. Being available, for me is the key to being there for kids. My lunchroom, hallway, and classroom time was shorter than usual this week due to other responsibilities, but I can fix that tomorrow. #waledchat
Q3: Were there any moments in the past week where you noticed you missed an opportunity to show a student how much you cared about them? How can you remedy that next class?
#waledchat
A5 My colleagues are rock stars. One of my favorite ways to show them how I feel is to write about them: https://t.co/khtQZ6Ya9X Even better: getting them to present their work.
#waledchat
A4: worked on listening better, helping to build capacity. This week for RAK I have left an anynomous sticky note of encouragment on every Ts car so when they leave for the day it is on a good note.#waledchat
A3: Again, my job now doesn't allow me to work with the Ss like I did in previous years. So I just try to be friendly to those that come to me for password resets or help logging into their GSuite account. But I also teach manners. Do not walk in my office w/o knocking #waledchat
A3 I just got an email from my principal saying a student has been bullied all year. I feel horrible that this student feels unsafe in our school and my class. I'm def keeping an eye out for anything going on starting tomorrow #waledchat
Guilty of this more than I'd like to admit. I always blamed short periods or Ss not making effort to stay for extra help. It was on all of us, especially me as the leader. #waledchat
A4: I put up a Compliments while you Copy board to encourage people to leave positive notes for each other. I have been leaving messages, bags of Hugs when I think they need it, bags of chips with a saying "I think you're all that and a bag of chips". #waledchat
Powerful. That student will surely appreciate it. Goes a long way toward relationship building. Shows great growth too. We've all been there! #waledchat
A5: After spending the weekend with some of my wife's friends I will be going to my favorite pizza place @MODPizza! It is a make your own pizza place and it is AMAZING! Hoping they bring a location to Winchester, VA! #waledchat
A5: I was telling my wife that sadly, one of the constants in my life right now is sports. I can watch a hockey game and mentally check out for a couple hours. Going to two @Chicago_Wolves games this weekend, in addition to the game that I am at tonite w/my daughter. #waledchat
A4. Tried my best to just be there for support and encouragement. We have a great staff. Sometime we have to remember that we are there for the kids. Not us. #waledchat
9:27pm
A5: This weekend marks my brother’s 35th b-day and we’ll be spending time together. Technology will be put on the back burner and reconnecting with family with be the primary focus.
#waledchat
A5 This weekend I will make more time for the gym (some illness and injuries in the family hindered my progress); also family activities and going out with my friend. Time to refind my balance! #waledchat
A5: Hoping to take some time to disconnect and find a trusted colleague or friend to talk through a tough week. Have to get through giving my first PD tomorrow, before anything #waledchat
A4: for always being their to listen, reflect, and provide guidance when needed. For me it’s about building relationships and not grand gestures #waledchat
A5: I started this evening by taking myself out on a date 😁 Took a long walk into town, had a lovely dinner, and finished it off with ice cream on my walk home. I'm working at my second job all weekend, so this was my chance to relax a bit #waledchat
A4: I try to be a good listener. When people help me with something, I try to slip a small thank you gift in their mailbox so they know I appreciate their time. My door is always open to people who need to get things off their chest. People use it, so they must know. #waledchat
A1: I've shared this a couple times this week because I am proud of its effects. I wrote 10 things about why I love each kid and put them on their lockers. Everyone deserves to know not just that they're loved, but why they're loved. #waledchat
A4: Kind words, warm smiles, sincere salutations on my emails and a big bowl of mixed choclate and assorted candy based on the survey they completed! #chocolatesoothesthesoul#waledchat
A5 This is one of the rare weekends when we don't have anything going on, so my husband, kids, & I are looking forward to sitting on the couch, watching movies & Olympics, and eating pizza! #waledchat
A5: I’m going to one of my favorite places, and visiting my grandpa! Super excited to relax at the lake and spend some quality time with him. #waledchat
A5 For MA, its February Vacation. Tomorrow night is our family Marvel Night at Black Panther opening night, Saturday is ski club, Tuesday is Googlepalooza! Mix in sleep, pedicure, and HGTV! #waledchat
A4 Making room for conversation about things outside of school. Family, hobbies, etc. Sharing timely resources and making sure I supported those who reached out. Great week in this department! #waledchat
A5: Daughter’s Volleyball tourney this weekend so I’ll get to spend some quality time with family and friends. Love to see her and the team grow and thrive. #waledchat
