#formativechat A2: I have stopped worrying about smaller distractions and focus on engaging students positively. I use hooks from #tlap that increase positive student interaction and engagement
Kristen here from PA. Last day for me today. I am wallowing in my self pity by Twitter chatting, buying pirate books, and planning #passionprojects. #formativechat
A1 I like to use some sinple@check lists, turn and talk, have students explain to neighbors, and my favorite, text the teacher on the remind app as the exit ticket. #formativechat
A1 #formativechat I use small group --> class discussions as my reading accountability/comp assessment & Ss can back up my assessment with annotations, questions, etc. If they have specific questions, opinions, confusion about character motivation, etc., they're reading!
A1: @PearDeck and simple raise your hand polls are my go tos. During stations, I also create activities that I can quickly assess group understanding. #formativechat
#formativechat A1 I like to use some simple check lists, turn and talk, have students explain to neighbors, and my favorite, text the teacher on the remind app as the exit ticket. L
A1 - Use @goformative tools like Multiple Choice/Show Your Work, use mini-whiteboards, use thumbs up, side, or down are a few quick ways to gather data to make instructional decisions. #formativechat
A1 Started using @plickers this year to get quick assessments of what they know. Also love Socrative and Google Forms for the instant data! #formativechat
#formativechat - A1 - I like to use @goformative to ask quick open ended math questions. The interface makes it easy to review all students answers all at once. Like this....
That’s a cool idea. I never thought about using Remind for an exit slip! Wonder how that would look with 129 students? I would look rather popular. #formativechat
A1 I like to check in with the Ss using different language domains. Sometimes they respond using video, or they write in their dialogue journals. Just asking simple questions to guage understanding is effective as well. #formativechat
A1 My students favorite quick check is using @plickers. It gathers the data for me, but the graph helps us use it as a quick review on why certain answers might have been chosen and how we can learn from it. #formativechat
Do you mean when you have had a convo w/them and can't get a solution, have the write down their thoughts until u can get backwith them? #formativechat
A1:My all-time favorite for my 3rd grade techies is @GetKahoot. It keeps track of questions they get right and wrong so I can go back and check to see how they did! They love it and don’t even realize I am assessing them. #formativechat#edu5213SBU
#formativechat A3: I love using @Flipgrid because Ss love to use technology and I get to see Ss, expressions, and hear their voice! Ss also have the bonus of emojis at the end and giving responses to one another. It is a great break from having them do small group discussions.
A1: I started using a little notebook for each student. Sample type question of what we are working on that week. Students answer and take home. Parents get a look and I send an email about what to look for. Parents give feedback or ask questions. #formativechat
A1 #formativechat I use small group --> class discussions as my reading accountability/comp assessment & Ss can back up my assessment with annotations, questions, etc. If they have specific questions, opinions, confusion about character motivation, etc., they're reading!
A2 I’ve tried to worry less about testing and more about understanding. Realizing that it’s okay to be behind the pacing. Outside of the classroom I have tried to attend more after school functions to show support and spend time with students. #formativechat
A2 reading quizzes, homework (except reading), MY WAY notes, study questions. Ss are finding what's important & 99%+ of the topics I want covered are discussed! If not, a "Missed Topics" Discussion or Assign. Ss' are thinking, not finding what I told them to find! #formativechat
A2: Silent Sustained Reading is something I’ve stopped because only a small select were actively reading. I’d rather scaffold that reading and have them talk through their reading. It’s way more busy and loud, but purposeful and I know they are actively reading. #formativechat
#formativechat - A2 - I have used @goformative, self-paced playlists, and video to completely stop teaching in front of the room. This allows me to spend all of my time teaching in small groups and helping individual students. Check out how I did it! https://t.co/onbQDafQY3
A2 As little direct instruction as possible in order to talk to Ss individually or in small groups. I try to get out of their way and let them work. #formativechat
A2: love this question!!! Fill in the blank notes, giving notes before exploration, teaching isolated scientific method skills. Some of those make me cringe now, lol!! #formativechat
A2: stop talking so much and allow students to explain, ask questions, guide the discussions. Have them paraphrase. Ask though provoking questions for expansion on content and ideas #formativechat
Yay! True project-based learning and that’s when you truly can assess the situation - literally. Who gets it? No room to hide; the teacher is on the move! #formativechat
A2 As little direct instruction as possible in order to talk to Ss individually or in small groups. I try to get out of their way and let them work. #formativechat
A2: no formal homework assigned to check and correct, moving towards shorter informal ‘check ins’ vs lengthy unit tests, removed artificial testing situations like spelling and grammar tests (rely instead on authentic observations from everyday writing) #formativechat
A2: I have stopped giving out homework every night. Reading every night is still expected but if a worksheet is given it is used as a pre-assessment so we can spend more time on guided practice #edu5213SBU#formativechat
My kids absolutely love using Plickers. I have the student response graph showing so they can see how many people responded & then I show the correct response and everyone cheers. I really like being able to print a PDF of the student data as well. #formativechat
A2 I have also tried to control how much I speak vs how much the kids speak. I have learned how to “shutup and listen” more and let the kids take charge. #formativechat
Whole class response to a challenge one person has; checking for understanding via popcorn questioning (hands up and pop around the room) #formativechat
#formativechat
A2: I take attendance through fun warm up activities that get the kids up and moving while I can gage PL's. These activities require them to log in often so I collect attendance along the way.
A2 Getting up in front of the class and lecturing is dead. Quick intros then students discovering and exploring. Less teacher talk and more student engagement. #formativechat
A2: I moved away from direct instruction that is solely informational. I would rather they found the information via a scavenger hunt or took guided notes on slides that they view at their own pace. That way I am free to walk around and help them. #formativechat
A2: When I head back to the classroom next year, there will be less whole group instruction in order to maximize the small group and 1-on-1 work with students. This is sure to pay off BIG for #SpEd and #EL students! #formativechat
A1: I’ve used @plickers@GetKahoot and next year would really like to look into @Flipgrid Students love the technology being used during assessment, makes it different and you are still able to analyze data #formativechat

A2. I have also learned that sometimes its best to just go by the seat of your pants let the kids guide you. So yes sometimes I don't follow what is planned. #formativechat#edu5213SBU
A2:I have moved toward giving feedback on writing assignments through Google Docs. I can make specific comments and they can write back and it only takes a few seconds. Quick, easy, and efficient. #formativechat#edu5213SBU
A2: Years ago I stopped having my Ss take notes during lessons and made them more interactive. It’s not really about the information but more so the connections you make to help you gain a better understanding of the information. #formativechat

A3 @Geo_Porter found the ProKeys chrome extension & I'm pairing it with my most used writing feedback comments. Added hyperlinked resources into those comments. A win-win for teacher AND students! Faster feedback, links to resources, chance to revise = learning! #formativechat
negotiate a final grade w/ each student - we look at the work, the learning goals, success criteria, and feedback and how they used that feedback to improve. Grade is based on convos, observations, and "projects" #formativechat
A2 I’ve tried to worry less about testing and more about understanding. Realizing that it’s okay to be behind the pacing. Outside of the classroom I have tried to attend more after school functions to show support and spend time with students. #formativechat
#formativechat A2 not marking work that is finished during class, marking it as learners are working so they get immediate feedback and have conversations about their thinking. #onenote is amazing for this! @OneNoteEDU
I love doing this too! I also like to link them to videos for further help. I also require them to respond to me. No more red ink - an conversation is born! #formativechat

#formativechat - A3 - The key to being able to use formative assessment AS, FOR, and OF learning is 1) utilizing video with @educreations to teach rather than in front of room and 2) utilizing instantaneous data from @goformative to tell exactly what your Ss know - No Guessing!
#formativechat a2 Learned that if you are repeating same info over and over, then ss are tuning out or attention seeking. Do group reflect before starting. Then more time you will have indeed
@skymazef3#learning
A3: Honestly, the biggest time saver has been to limit “scoring” by using only four codes or putting no scores at all but just tagging the work with a word that identifies what the student needs tomorrow. #formativechat
A3 hands down my favorite one is the remind app! Personalized individual feedback and students can share pictures of their work! Even if kids don’t have a cell phone they can do it from a laptop! #formativechat
A3 use private comments in Google classroom to give feedback to all Ss in less than 5 minutes. Read teaching math with Google Apps @alicekeeler#formativechat

A3: One thing that has really helped me save time is using Google Forms for assessments. I love how easy it is to differentiate for Ss IEP Goals. It also grades everything for you and reduces the amount of paper used! #alldigital#edu5213SBU#formativechat
As a way to assess learning in other environments -- does the student talk about something they've learned in the context of something related they're experiencing outside of school? #FormativeChat
A3: We use Google Cast all the time. If I see great examples...Cast it! If I see common mistakes as I’m walking around...Cast it! Best part is they never know when I want them to put up their screens on the Smartboard so they stay engaged. #formativechat
A3 - check out the @goformative library for a ton of useful resources so many ideas and how to save time, app smash, and more, also use @onenote to organize digital binders, share feedback collaborate and more #formativechat
#formativechat
A3: I enjoy students working in google docs collaboratively so I can go into their documents and provide feedback and see how they are doing.
I'm making it up as I tweet. ;) But schools do climate surveys; why not actually surveys about learning? More importantly, does the student seem engaged by the learning, whether or not they're retaining all of it? #FormativeChat
A3 Life saving tools include @flipgrid for oral proficiency checks. Let's me show the students oral growth over time. @newsela for reading differentiation. #formativechat
Ah yes. I love this idea. I also love the ide of sharing a specific strategy we are working on either at home or at school and ask the other partner to reinforce it in their context. #FormativeChat

A3: In our building, were using @Seesaw with preK-1st grades and @google classroom with 2nd-5th grade. Many classrooms have also been dabbling in @flipgrid#formativechat

A3: Kahoot! It’s engaging for all students and a great formative assessment – it’s a quick way to tell when students are “getting it and when a topic needs to be re-taught prior to summative exams. #edu5213sbu#formativechat
A2: I moved away from direct instruction that is solely informational. I would rather they found the information via a scavenger hunt or took guided notes on slides that they view at their own pace. That way I am free to walk around and help them. #formativechat
Collaborative peer editing in a digital space is amazing, and you can formatively assess Ss understanding of the material based on the quality of the feedback they give to peers. #formativechat
A3: We use Google Cast all the time. If I see great examples...Cast it! If I see common mistakes... Cast it! Best part is the students never know when I want them to put their screens on the Smart Board so they stay engaged. #formativechat#edu5213SBU
A3: whenever I mark work I have a notebook that I use to make lists. Math for example. The lists pop up as I go. Ones that ‘got it’, ones that need a 2 min reminder on subtraction, ones I need to reteach in small group. These lists are my groups for next day #formativechat
A3 Plickers allows for quick feedback but also conversation because of the graph. Google Classroom allows for the quick feedback for all subjects including writing. Flipgrid allows for alternative ways to respond to assessment questions. Seesaw is another favorite. #formativechat
A3. I think for me one of the biggest things this year was post it notes my kids loved writing on them and putting it where it belonged on the board. And it varies form year to year it seems like. I sometimes have my kids do different actions #formativechat#edu5213SBU
A3: Honestly, the biggest time saver has been to limit “scoring” by using only four codes or putting no scores at all but just tagging the work with a word that identifies what the student needs tomorrow. #formativechat
A1: I really wish there was a much greater emphasis on formative assessment (as all of you have described it)...we continuer to be so ‘driven’ by summative assessment in our educational culture. #formativechat
A3: Honestly, the biggest time saver has been to limit “scoring” by using only four codes or putting no scores at all but just tagging the work with a word that identifies what the student needs tomorrow. #formativechat
Interesting... we then spend much of our adult lives taking notes because it's ingrained. It may not be the most individualized way to process information, then or now. #FormativeChat
