#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Welcome to ! Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
Hey Kelly from Tahoe, ed Tech & Curriculum Coordinator. I <3 earning badges & want to give them to Ts for PD.
I'm Noah in Denver! Right now, super excited about planning Badge Summit on 6/24. Just $99:) https://t.co/ift0dQ4kiA
Hola Kelly! So glad you could make it! Going to lean on your heavily, esp for your expertise with Q3!
Tom from So Cal. Badges pilot program next year for AP Spanish.
Welcome Tom! And to all the chatters and lurkers, Tom is who brought us this week's topic and questions
Hi! I'm a teacher trainer & course designer in Texas where it's flooding. Glad to talk about badge equity
glad I made it! I've missed my badge friends!
Caren from rural NC. Media Specialist, not using badges yet, but would love to next school year!
Welcome! We hope this chat helps meet your needs!
Q1: How do we ensure Digital Badge equity and access for learners with an IEP?
For the next 30 min my tweets dedicated to
Caroline, student from Wake Forest University in North Carolina, interested in learning about equity for badge earners
A1:I think badges should have multiple ways to earn & show evidence so they're accessible to all.
Awesome Caroline! Love to have pre-service perspective on this...please don't be shy so we learn from you!
Love this...Differentiation for each student.
A1 Work with SPED teachers to teach them about badges and requirements, Spend extra 1:1 with these Ss.
and multiple opportunities to earn. not just one and done.
The multiple (path)ways is hugely important. How do you think we might communicate those ways to earners?
Great point Tom! So often we forget that we have experts down the hall who'd be thrilled to collab with us!
Choice menus, options, etc
i think talking thru ways to earn is important. Ss need to see there is multiple paths without telling. Provide examp
I love the menus and the explicit conversations w earners
A1:Complex but all parties teachers, parents, kids should understand criteria & means offer multiple ways to communicate it
i love the menu option. I'd love to do more menu options!
A followup question is how to ensure that those mult paths aren't viewed as watered down?
That's the point of badges. They keep at it until they have mastery.
Give examples of what it takes to earn the badges. Let them know expectations
YES! We aren't alone...other stakeholders are there to help us support learners! https://t.co/VhEUxowgSr
A1:Complex but all parties teachers, parents, kids should understand criteria & means offer multiple ways to communicate it
OK, moving on to second question. Excited to have co-mod and expert with us for this one...
Q2: How do we support ELLs with Digital Badge equity and access?
when in the classroom, I did layered curriculum. Different products for the same task
A1: are there any badge systems that offer audio or translations?
So all learners met the objective, just in their own ways?
Not watered down, just different final products based on their learning styles.
Great question! Not sure if systems offer these accommodations but if they're web based, we have tools https://t.co/x2A0z3jWCA
A1: are there any badge systems that offer audio or translations?
Q2: Partner with ESL teachers to explain and give instruction. Have translated in native language if possible.
This is tricky because ELLs can be L1 speakers in s World Lang course
Can someone show me examples of some of the badges they use...complete newbie!
A2: I think about running language of criteria by ELL teachers to ensure it's clear for all what earning Badge requires
A2: Translation is really important, especially if we want the parents involved
A2: Offer translations or visuals of criteria & evidence. Parents of ELLs will find this useful https://t.co/HKul7xXfm5
Q2: How do we support ELLs with Digital Badge equity and access?
We wouldn't want to do this if the badge is for Eng or WKG as the point is mastery of target lang
Parent meetings and help sessions!
We're doing a parent session on Thurs:)
Disagree. Still be useful for parents & understanding criteria doesn't negate they accomplish in
Disagree. Still useful for parents & understanding criteria doesnt negate they accomplish in English
If I may translate, I think is about native Spanish spkrs earning Badges in Spanish class
Moving on to our third question. Important for those of us working in PD Badges...
badges are attached to achievement of tasks which would be in language they're learning
Q3: What accommodations may be needed for adult Badge earners?
I guess like the EOG allows read-aloud on non-reading subjects. Same for badges.
Very useful feature for equity https://t.co/dLg3lvpqE2
I guess like the EOG allows read-aloud on non-reading subjects. Same for badges.
Correct. My translation objections are limited to lang classes where target lang mastery is objective
A3:Same for Ss! Provide explicit objectives & multiple pathways to earn. And maybe chocolate. :)
Q3: I have a question for the question. How do you get teachers to buy in? I did online PD, few teachers participated
Million dollar question:) One thing I think about is having a good answer for T who asks "Why should I care?"
A3: offering physical representation to compliment the digital for T who is intimidated by the tech
i've thought about including physical badge or sticker to increase buy in. Then use earners as experts.
A3 We have an expectation of student use but unclear for teacher reqs
A3: Provide short screencast tutorials of all processes to help anticipate troubleshooting needs
A3: many need to be briefed on the history & reasoning for the badges & see prof examples https://t.co/BkXqRe6Vrw
Q3: What accommodations may be needed for adult Badge earners?
A3 this convo could also split to discuss adult re-entry students as well.
Great point! Is it fair to expect Ts to engage in Badge issuing if never trained on the receiving end?
A3: provide a short description of the purpose and quests to earn badges
A1: We are going 1:1 next year for our whole school. It is so important for teachers to use tech!
Release time to complete them
It would be helpful for badge platforms to offer these to teachers https://t.co/0frSi1T7uw
A3: Provide short screencast tutorials of all processes to help anticipate troubleshooting needs
Just noticed SMORE offers badges! :)
Q4: What are your takeaways from this week's chat?
Ha! I didn't know that. We use that for APS' Badge newsletter:)
I like that Noah. I see it as a great addition to e-portfolios and showcase achievements
yes they do for the creator. I've earned a couple myself. :)
FYI, Badge Summit is day b4 in Colorado. Just $99 and amazing thought leaders to learn with! https://t.co/ift0dQ4kiA
Q4: To think about all your learners as you create tasks for completion.
sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. I LOVE earning badges from skiing & my apple watch.
good infographics Carren 👍🏻
A4: understanding more about the emerging badge movement and how it can a great tool for teachers, students, and parents!
This has me thinking how much more we can do to provide access to all for badges https://t.co/tU6r88QVrf
Q4: What are your takeaways from this week's chat?
A4: HUGE TAKEAWAY for me is to ask (ELL, SpEd) experts down the hall for help, to collab
A4: To start thinking about next year and how to implement from day 1!!! Better get busy!
Thx for joining! Having 2 NC educators join us just led me to discover the new Avett Bros song:)
If you attend Badge Summit are bringing cupcakes for us in ?
A4 plan multiple platforms for the teachers to facilitate, back up student specialist to avoid crashes
A4:Definitely need to work in more pathways in to all badges.
I might! Got Monkey Bread in the oven as I type!
A4: understanding that's it's always a work in progress and requires immense collaboration
Oh, and if any chatters want 12 minutes of listening homework, I'm on the most recent Ed Got Game podcast talking Badges!
