Happy Monday all! For many of our #resiliencechat folks school is starting soon, or is just around the corner. Is anyone with us tonight, or are you all getting those last few days of summer in?
Well, I'll hop to it, and see if we have any takers out there tonight. TidBit: Each one of us experiences the start of school differently: Excitement, anxiety, fear, tension, wonder, all can be part of the normal anticipation each year. #resiliencechat
Some are anxious first year or new school, others are happy because school is better than their home reality, many are happy to be back in their familiar social dynamic #resiliencechat
Q2: Knowing that many children experience anxiety about returning to school what are some ways in which you can ease their anxiety, normalize the experience, and provide a safe place for them to be? #resiliencechat

A2: we are small enough that we can typically partner new students with a buddy for the inevitable list of anxious questions, positive people & positive first impression #resiliencechat
New school year's often are complicated with questions for students:
-Who is in my class?
-Who is my teacher?
-Will I make friends?
-When's lunch?
-What if I don't know something?
-Are they going to like me?
Q3 -How do we calm their fears?
#resiliencechat
A2 #resiliencechat One of the ways to lessen anxiety is to build an environment that is calm, accepting, positive, safe and secure. When we seek to meet the basic needs of our students first, we can then support their comfort levels, and lessen anxiety.

Q4 Some schools focus on providing students and parents with a welcome back they will never forget! Does your school seek to make this a memorable occasion, or just start up like it's any other day? #resiliencechat
A3: Start simple by greeting them with a smile at the door, affirm their presence by awknowledging them, and respect and value their individuality! #trust will follow!
That sounds cool! #Resiliencechat Many of our principals, and staffs are out front greeting students and families, and Central Office Administrators are all out at our school sites for the first 2 days of school. Our public must be shown that we care!
Tidbit2: #resiliencechat Many of the things that we do for students, might also be some ideas we can do for new teachers and staff. In @FairfieldSuisun we will have over 300 new employees joining our team, and must work to #connect#engage and lower their #anxiety too!

Q6 #resiliencechat
We have had some great ideas like, Principals writing welcome back cards to all students, teachers making community visits prior to school starting. What other ideas come to mind that truly demonstrate to our students and their families that we #care?
A5: I think letting families know that help and support are available long after the first day of school, and how to effectively access that help and support. #resiliencechat
Q7 We have heard it said that #eachmomentmatters and sometimes teachers are told to focus on the pacing guides, get to the academics, and yet, if time is taken to build community #classroom and #school, don't we really gain more in the end? In what way? #resiliencechat
Q4 Some schools focus on providing students and parents with a welcome back they will never forget! Does your school seek to make this a memorable occasion, or just start up like it's any other day? #resiliencechat
Absolutely, if it's just a one time shot, then the opportunity to demonstrate the care, compassion, and services is a lost opportunity. We have had some principals keep the red carpet rolled out over the first two weeks of school to students and families! #resiliencechat

A7: course outlines, grading schemes and class room rules can wait untilday two. Humanize yourself and begin to build classroom culture #resiliencechat
Yes! I think our School Leaders must also work to build the relationships with all staff as well. If we are not focused on the big people as well as the little people in our schools we have lost a grand opportunity! #resiliencechat

A7: So much is gained by taking the time to set the foundation for relationships to grow and classroom community to form! This also allows Ss to feel at home in the space. If they are comfortable, Ss are more likely to take learning risks & support one another. #resiliencechat

Q8 Some students might be excited, some might be quiet, well others might be full of fidgets on day one. What are some strategies that we can use to make sure that each one is able to be them, yet, finds comfort in our classes, and schools? #resiliencechat

A8: Know your kids. Spend time chatting with them, remember likes/dislikes, connect with their parents/guardians, find out what makes them tick, & create a classroom culture where fair means that everyone gets what they need to be the best learner they can be! #resiliencechat

Yes, connecting with students, and ensuring that they know you are an authentic person who cares about them goes a long way towards building trust, and helps them to build that comfort level of wanting to be present with you! #Resiliencechat

I believe we each have the power to help each other feel more safe and secure in our educational settings, thus we create safe places for out students.
Q9 What are some steps we can take to help each other feel safe, secure, and positive about this new year? #resiliencechat
A9: showing vulnerability, asking for help when you need some, important reminder for administrators. Hard to get staff to be forthcoming if leaders do not model collegial growth #resiliencechat
A9 One strategy is the "Power of Positive Intent"
This means that when we are working with others, we can help things get better by presuming positive intent for others actions, rather than negative intent. When we do this, we can often feel more positive. #resiliencechat

I anticipate @saratruebridge returning next week, and she often asks - What can you do as a result of #resiliencechat tonight to help #resilience grow?
