Q1 When you were (are) in college or Teacher prep program, how was (is) tech modeled for you?
Wow! New class here. Glad to see a "grad" jump in.
Autumn here for a little while! My todo list is long for tonight!
I'm Lillian, from Bristol CT and I'm a double major in Education and Political Science at the University of New England.
we are in the pilot phase of our Chromebook rollout! Implementing into our junior highs...about 3100 students for 16-17
A1 Tech was a novelty and separate from core instruction..more an add on than a tool for leverage
Ben from the Chicago area. What's up, everyone? Been a while. . .
We are being taught to use new technology in the classroom to better suit our students
Good evening . I‘m Mari from San Diego, I teach 7th science & AVID and I’m our Blended Learning Specialist
A1: sit and get, totally Ts centered
At NCSU, we use smartboards, clickers, powerpoint presentations, iPads, Moodle, and many other things
A1: NO!
I don't remember tech in either my bachelors or masters course work. If there was, it wasn't memorable.
Modeling is the key for everything, so how was your tech modeled for you
A1 I helped the teacher teach the powerpoint/office/excel class while being a student
A1: Ha! I went through teacher training in France in 2000. No tech. We wrote report cards by hand. No joke.
A1: At NCSU, we use smartboards, clickers, powerpoint presentations, iPads, Moodle, and many other things
A1: I remember a lot of rubric work, but not a lot of tech. It was in Canada in '07, perhaps I was there too early.
A1: Tech modeled for me was lacking..I graduated in '97! I typed lesson plans. Does that count?
A1: We had 2 tech courses (5 years ago). Blogged, created web quests, websites, social bookmarking, etc. I loved it.
A1: Dating myself - not much was shown to me at all! Nothing special comes to mind.
A1: T showed us & we had time to experiment & play
My college/grad days were in early years of internet. Tech was mostly just word processing papers.
A1 Tech is modeled as a great tool, but not as a fix all. It is also shown to be vaguely unreachable.
Hello ! I have a mini project due. I chose the topic of distractions using technology.Any solutions to this issue?
A1 - Looking at the SAMR model, we look to find the best ways to teach Ss!
A1: there wasn't a whole lot of technology used 15 years ago in my program. Blackboard is all I can remember.
A1: At NCSU, we used a lot of technological tools, such as clickers, smartboards, projectors, WolfVision, Moodle etc.
A1 It was modeled when I was doing my student teaching.
A1: tech wasn't modeled at all - unfortunately almost all classes were passive learning. Maybe some PPT, was asked to help 1/2
Q1: Technology was a separate class, there was no integration except for MS Word.
A1: had time to come up w/ ideas for use in classroom
A1: Have a EDUclass Supporting 21st Century Learning through Technology to combine tech w/ learning
NCSU folks, I had an 8 AM Powerpoint Chemistry 101 class...
A1: We use tech constantly in my Masters digital learning class to understand student's use of social medias
A1 - Tech should def be modeled. Education Ss should be taking part in ed tech conferences. Great way to get plugged in!
2/2 professors use tech as a grad Ss and then began adjunct teaching all classes
sad to say, I still see that now https://t.co/jHPmS7zLdx
A1 Tech was a novelty and separate from core instruction..more an add on than a tool for leverage
For me, we were masters of the chalk dust army
A1 - I don't think I had a tech class at all. We used it a lot, but we didn't have to learn about it explicitly.
A1: basically as a resource one might utilize for research purposes
At Hope College we use Moodle, laptops, PowerPoints, and just recently-Twitter!
A1: I remember learning how to hyperlink and thought it was SO HARD!
A1: When I was in college tech was modeled when we had to learn to splice 16mm films. This was a bit ago. :-)
You will learn to teach the way I was taught Researchers are not always practitioners https://t.co/Xz7UGJNThB
sad to say, I still see that now https://t.co/jHPmS7zLdx
A1 Tech was a novelty and separate from core instruction..more an add on than a tool for leverage
A1: The only tech that was modeled for me in grad school was an overhead projector. Does that count?
A1 Technology is readily used within current classrooms here at NCSU. Were taught that technology is a "tool" for teaching.
A1: Tech was a separate class. Did not learn how to integrate.
A1: Students (K-12 and beyond) need to be exposed to what is out there & understand the whys and hows for tech integration.
I'm way more curious in how current Ed students are having it modeled
that seems more the norm at the time
In the program I'm in new ways to use tech in edu. are constantly being introduced.
A1:In college teachers show by example. They try to use a new website or program everytime we step into the classroom
A1b) I remember being allowed to touch the document projector once. We were so excited!
A1: In , used Vernier probeware with LoggerPro software. For STEM, it was awesome integration of tech. Used with Ss
Looks great! I'll check it out.
A1 - it wasn't , but my first job was in an Apple ACOT school. Amazing PD.
I'm worried they are not seeing it today.
was Sherlock Holmes your mentor
A1 Debbie jumping in from AL, been awhile, tech wasn't modeled much, had one Edtech class getting masters, nothing else
Hey, Nathan! So you're running the show around here these days? I knew you back in the day . . .
technology is constantly used and modeled in our classes to help prepare us for our future students
. pubic or private univ? what degree prog? that's great!
Hi all! Just home from so I'll have to catch everyone next week but I know will b awesome!
Joining a little late. Shawn, direct. of tech. integration from MN.
A1: 2003- we all got our 1st email address! I'm interested in those in college now- what r they showing u 2 use in classrooms?
If you had a good mentor teacher. Mentor teachers leave a mark on student teachers. Good & bad.
if you can beat them, absorb them
A1: it wasn't at all. It was as though it was space aged and temporary.
A1 Used a lot of the technology discussed in class for our own assignments, solidifying the usefulness and gaining experience!
A1. masters class for ed leadership was most beneficial using technology at the time (powerpoints haha)
A1 Technology is modeled for me in almost all of my classes and is very helpful in course work
we are taught how to use smartboards and how to integrate iPads into the classrooms
What about or computer science Ss interested in ? https://t.co/3iQgwh2nm1
A1 - Tech should def be modeled. Education Ss should be taking part in ed tech conferences. Great way to get plugged in!
many teacher preparation programs are typically not preparing Ts to integrate tech or be innovative, unfortunately.
We've learned how to utilize new websites, smart boards, personal phones, and social media such as Twitter!
We learn all of the social media formats and how to use them to interest students and be accessible
I go to a public university and I am in elementary education. Right now, I am in a technology for educators class
A1: I remember saving still on floppy disks. And my computer set on fire and melted the disk.
A1 - I think I mostly learned about tech through trying it out, watching other teachers use it, etc. Conferences, edcamps, too.
thinking these NCSU students are getting tech modeling
🤗🦄 I have no idea what this means, but I like it
A1: was modeled for me in college with a textbook! Yikes!
Hi! I am Heather Russo! I am at the University of New England! I am from Wayland MA and I am an ED major with 2 minors!
A1 there was none... At all...
A1: Going to date myself, Taught how to program with Cobal and Fortran, learned lots of problem solving and critical thinking
Hi I'm Maddie from Londonderry, NH. I'm an Elementary Education major at the University of New England!
And is that the only tech instruction or is it embedded in other classes?
We are starting to use Twitter more to express our thoughts on the content we are learning. First time ever!
is all about tech (of course) & is introducing us to many different platforms, some I wish my other profs used.
Where are you going to school now?
It is used in all of our classes
maybe the mod is works at
A1: I still have some floppy disks, Remember Zip Disks were like a revolution when they came out https://t.co/RVoRLfBpsK
A1: I remember saving still on floppy disks. And my computer set on fire and melted the disk.
University of Washington!
A1 samr was missing! Tech was used to replace the typewriter..im old!! Hello all! Hey
Glad to have some College students on this chat. Good Job moderators.
What's up, Hobbs? How'd you like twitter so far?
Hi all, Phil here from Beijing, tech coach. What is Q1?
Dawn from FL. A1-there was no technology modeled for us.
and Jazz drives! I so wanted one! A gig on one disk!
Breaks both ways, Ss need to bulk up pedagogical chops, but must also master use of tech for learners. Tech great place to end.
SAMR should be missing. It is anti-maker
. simply don't understand how society depends on tech&uses it daily but educ is last to embrace full integration
Q1 When you were (are) in college or Teacher prep program, how was (is) tech modeled for you?
Q2 Was the use of tech encouraged while in your program?
A1: Pencil, paper, chalkboard were all technology, remember mimeos too https://t.co/MmsKuWLaZK
A1: was modeled for me in college with a textbook! Yikes!
glad they have tech edu class!
A2: We are encouraged to use technology in everything we teach
I love that you're making these. Here's another secret: I ate pill bugs as a kid. ?
I am old enough to remember 5 1/4, and the 3 1/2 was revolutionary when it came along!
A1: Hey Lara Kinder teacher, and we were shown smart boards, skype, and blogger
Sorry I'm late, folks...that real life stuff again. Hope everyone is well!
it says that tech is the only solution. Sometimes paper is a solution
Are you at North Carolina State? Sounds like your program is doing great things.
A2 Yes, but very abstract. Mostly used to digitize the past rather than leverage
Technology is encouragedwith nearly even assignment! Education laptop and phone use is recommended!
A2 Somewhat they introduced us to this thing called a SmartBoard LOL
Do you think it is hard to generalize about teacher prep programs? Seems there is lots of diversity
The use of technology is always encouraged in my program
A2: In my major, I am currently taking a class that teaches us how to integrate tech into out future classrooms
A2: Definitely encouraged to use tech! Only 5 years ago, so it was expected. We used blackboard. Wish we saw real model lessons
A2: Technology is a significant tool used at NCSU. The College of Education requires students to use technology daily!
A2 boy powerpoint was a jaw dropper in its hey day!!
A2: Some classes jump in full heartedly, others only use the university required websites, etc. out of necessity
What every new teacher should read! Using to Engage Students W/ Learning Disabilities https://t.co/P1S67sK5gn via amazon
Ah. And that's exactly the problem I've been having with it. Thank you.
A2:Yes! I have always been encouraged by my education profs. to think outside the box, other profs. no so much...
working on my doctorate now, not much has changed since my B.S. https://t.co/otcil58HSv
A1: Dating myself - not much was shown to me at all! Nothing special comes to mind.
A2: Everything had to be typed. Many nights at the desktop listening to Napster and getting work done.
Hi, my name is Kathleen Hemingway and I am an ed major, with a minor in art therapy
In our program the use of tech. is always encoraged, I’m taking a class thats centered around incorporating tech in the class
Any tips to a future teacher?
A1: Remember
those video devices/flip video/big cameras, now screencasting/phones make it all obsolete https://t.co/uKfHBrI1hc
and Jazz drives! I so wanted one! A gig on one disk!
wow. That's just scary and sad.
A2: Yes (what little we had) but not as a significant part of lesson planning. Low on priority list.
A2: teaches a class here @ about technology in schools! But all of my education classes (thus far) have encouraged
We had educational media course. W OHPs, 2 track audio tape recorders and how to thread a projectorL:) https://t.co/pwnUob911n
A2 - Yes, but not really actively modeled. We (the students) kind of brought it in.
sounds like some guy picks out good tech for students
Saw a great post recently: Student thought floppy was 3D printed "save" icon!
A2: We also are encouraged to learn from technology and use it as a tool in our process of learning
A2: no, in fact, even in my doctoral program we were rarely allowed use of tech. Had a professor complain and they banned.
not every solution is solved by tech. Sometime a paper and pencil work.
In all my MEd classes, I brought my laptop, iPhone, and iPad 1. Similar to others. Multi device was natural
To our aspiring teachers...its not that u use , its HOW it is used. Tech is a tool to leverage
A2: I don't believe it ever came up. Not in the program, not at either practicum, but we were called MST, so that's weird, yes?
A2: once again, tech wasn't big in undergrad. In my masters program - everything was tech. Wikis being biggest.
A2 - Tech has definitely been highly encouraged for me to incorporate into my future classroom.
I had some 5 1/4. But the 3.5 was so much slimmer:)
I am currently taking a course that introduces different websites to use while in a classroom
A2: We are strongly encouraged to use tech because that's what society is turning to
A2. Yes & No depend'd on the prof. Most had blackboard (webpages), but G docs for collab pieces was huge! & Win Video Maker.
A2: Didn't do teacher prep (indep. school T), but I had some profs who modeled tech integration well in grad school.
A2 The use of tech ( tech at the time) was encouraged. The best buy in I get from Ts is when it is integrated
Yes!! Love for inquiry labs! They let you do exploration that you couldn't analyze as well w/o the tech
I'm speaking from my region and the 5 schools I've taught adjunct at
Technology is encouraged! Hasn't always been used in classes growing up, but has increased as years have gone by
is that the way that they phrase it? Not b/c it’s better for students?
Tech companies build software to automate what exists. District purchasing agents understand that.
A2 I was encouraged to use powerpoint and smartboards. I threw in Google Earth and Stellarium, when I could
napster. There is a blast from the past.
what course is this called?
A little bit here and there, but not a central focus.
uummm I still see Ss that feel that way :(
Q2 Technology is encouraged! Hasn't always been used in classes growing up, but has increased as years have gone by
I will give a look later.
A2: I want to volunteer to do a on a college campus for education students
A2: It was encouraged- tech was overhead projectors &audio CDs but we were supposed to use them.
A2: Use of tech is highly encouraged in our program & many classes include social media within their programs & projects
Yes, there are many great memes for this now. None labeled for reuse tho.
absolutely! What do we want our students to learn? Should be the driving question. 🙌🏼
take chances and reflect on what work and didn't work. Get to know your students. Relationships are paramount.
I'm not familiar with Stellarium. What is it?
Hey Sarah! Did you ever take a class that taught you how to incorporate technology in the classroom?
Awesome! A Q tho-as a techie, I know that technology is great-when it works. Do they encourage having "Plan B"
A2: I'd like to ask some of my new teachers about their most recent experiences in their grad programs about tech integration
A2 - Lots of emphasis on strategies, in the context of matching strategies to purpose and student need. Not bad, just low tech.
Supporting 21st Century Learning through Technology
It all becomes clear now - completely forgot that's where you teach!
Q2b Was tech ever thought of as yes I use tech, I have my docs in my LMS?
and only use tech in a purposeful way to service a lesson. Think end goal, then what tech could work.
could you explain more about decamp?
A2. Tech is encouraged & we have tried Thinglink & Padlet- helps us get an idea for other sites we can use in classrooms
Q2 Was the use of tech encouraged while in your program?
glad to see many current pre-service Ts have good experiences. Tides are turning perhaps!
I'll take a step further..What do they want/need to learn to be productive citizens in a digital world https://t.co/Yw5uYbw5rL
absolutely! What do we want our students to learn? Should be the driving question. 🙌🏼
That's a shame. My Ss are a little nervous to use it the first time, but then they love it and it's NBD.
A2: not for my BS or MS, and other than online learning not for my doctorate...but my Ed.S was IT so it was fully integrated
A2) Yes, but I loved that there was always pedagogy driving the tech. Tech wasn't used just for the sake of using it.
Don’t be afraid to try new things! And observe lots of other teachers. https://t.co/1TXG7LKkXu
Any tips to a future teacher?
A2: Encouraged in an organic sense -- tech must flow naturally around learning needs of Ss and pedagogical goals of Ts.
refresh me, where/what is NCSU?
A2 Tech was encouraged but not necessarily the focus of the courses, but we were introduced to a wide variety websites and tech
Yes! My Technology of Instruction class did a great job at that (& got me hooked on using twitter professionally)
I see your point, but believe some institutions are doing topnotch, while others greatly lag
A2: not as much as it should be; tech should have purposeful integration; why using it?
A2: Technology is encouraged and is used a good amount
I'd say it depends on the educator & pedagogy practices
Thank you very much for your tip! Always looking on how to become the best teacher I can possibly be!
I would say that my profs do a good job showing us current tech tools
Very cool! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much for your tip! Always looking on how to become the best teacher I can possibly be!
A2- no tech in college; I did make transparencies for the overhead projector & used vis a vie markers
A2: From what I observe tech is too often about the "how to" and not about the "why and when" in prep programs.
The big metropolis of Raleigh
NCSU is NC State University! I am an Elementary Education major!
I have a regular professor just like that! All of my professors are much more tech oriented.
If anyone working in teacher education isn't comfortable with edtech, they either need to learn, or get out! No appologies.
technology in my high school was not used, where in college technology is used daily and hs was only 3 years ago
a2: tech in my courses included the Ellison machine.
Great idea - an on a college campus for ed majors! cc
I totally agree. As a tech coach this is our goal for our Ts when using it in their classroom. It should be seamless.
Glad I stumbled upon this chat! s tweet tipped me off!
And never lose your thirst for learning. Be the learner you want your Ss to be!
More university ed programs need to get students hooked on Twitter for PD
A2: New Ts should be encouraged to consider impact of tech on ways Ss learn. How does tech impact cognitive function? Important.
agree! Probably top use of here is and they don't even have a school of education!
Just my 2 cents..profs get tenured based on publishing. Heads buried in research and not practitioners?
Feel like we could use a little more of that. Maybe that's the point of - low/mid/high tech solutions.
Hi Jon. And I friggin love Ellison die cuts
A2 Kind of unfair - Q for me. Undergrad CS, Grad physics, so heavy tech all around. :)
Whether it is better or not, it is what students are becoming more comfortable with in the classroom
or just productive citizens, period. No? A digital workflow is very similar to a traditional workflow IMO.
this was brought up at the ISTE Edcamp session. Lost a little steam
Agreed! I love the tech that melts into the background. Focus is on deep learning first. https://t.co/fioqNZ8USk
I totally agree. As a tech coach this is our goal for our Ts when using it in their classroom. It should be seamless.
is doing this at Grove City College!
Ss do love it,even w/ a lrng curve, some Ts are open to sugg but I've seen many Ts as sole tech users&Ss bystanders
That's like a lost art! I don't even know what that machine is...
yes! I have never heard of it before
A2: Hey we still use one of those! Makes great letters and shapes for early childhood https://t.co/kxpWL7KD7l
a2: tech in my courses included the Ellison machine.
YES! We like to have them focus on the skill first then add the tech to enhance it https://t.co/fwHIF1CakX
A2: New Ts should be encouraged to consider impact of tech on ways Ss learn. How does tech impact cognitive function? Important.
A2 Most of the time tech is embedded as an intrinsic part of subject matter, not an appendage.
Agreed! As technology advances, its use within education will advance too.
Teacher-led PD - teachers get together, announce what they want to talk about, then go talk about it.
I think for tech. to be truly helpful you need to get students involve in using it not just watching!
I would love to see be the discussion rather than . The space should be in the classroom too.
Fair, point taken. I think Im at an age where I straddle the trad. past and digital future. Perspective
Q3 How has new tools change the way your classroom is managed?
You're not old...you're tweeting and evolving! You're part of what started all of this tech age! You rock!
Okay - grammar alert! As my 2nd grade teacher used to say, that "hurts my ears. . . "
keep that mindset. Please. We need passionate educators.
Have seen class Dojo and similar tracking tools help in management as well as help with behav/standards tracking!
at the time we were thinking of something like model
A2 I agree- I'm most interested in using tech not just to enhance but to transform learning!
A3 Using the iPad as a writing surface to move about classroom. No need to be stuck at interactive board at front
A3 Have seen class Dojo and similar tracking tools help in management as well as help with behav/standards tracking!
I think where you are straddling is the best place to be in!
A3: they have made it easier to find ways to differentiate
A3: We are able to build the students' creativity far better than before
my first language is gibberish. Clean up my question please
A3: Tech has allowed the students to take charge of their learning and ask their own questions
A3 In the extreme, such as moocs, you don't even have to be there. Most things are somewhere in the middle.
A3. and help me to more effectively communicate w Ps about Ss behavior & acad. needs.
A3: New tools have made me more innovative &allow for faster feedback. Also allows Ss to have larger audience; not just class
A3: Looking back on my education, I am constantly using new tools. For example, k-12 I used Blackboard. Now, I use Moodle.
A3 Workflow, content accessibility and quality, communication, collab. creativity, Crit. Thinking, and best of all OPPORTUNITY!
A3: Love instant contact with Ps via email/gradebook alerts. Easy to differentiate and offer interest-based options
A3: Tech has changed routines of classroom management, but not its essence. Open w. a poll, e-exit ticket, etc.
A3: Moving from whiteboards to smart boards changed the way a student can learn and for a teacher to teach
A3: simple answer: exit tickets using google forms.
corrected Q3 How have new tools change the way your classroom is managed? thanks Ben
A3: We are also to find more resources that we may not have had access to before to help further their knowledge
A3: More chances for all voices to be heard. More chances for learning outside of official school/class time
My master class uses a blog to stay up to date, kind of a cool way to manage materials and dates/ask questions of prof
A3: Way easier to keep track of data, increase engagement, & document learning
do you have a favorite tool or 2 that build up creativity? Or that students can be most creative with?
completely agree! transforms learning!
A3: The tools change ALL the time in how we manage. Just need to take 1 & run with it. Get comfortable & then tackle new stuff
at least spark it to new levels
Q3 In the classrooms Ive been in the new tools have changed the way classes are structured. Ex. Flipped Classroom
I think giving a student their own iPad is very effective!
A3cont:G classroom helps me to more efficently get K's assignments, helps with the wiggles
Yep I am a moron when I comes to the English language
A3 tech has allowed less "directing" more "facilitating", more autonomous learning
A3 so many tools to help curate information, collect data, organize workflow. It's all about efficiency work smarter.
Hey Jay! Do you think this blog is a helpful tool?
I <3 when the Ss find out their capabilities when using tech and how engrossed then get into their work https://t.co/iKMqFXRLup
A3: We are able to build the students' creativity far better than before
A3: New tools have allowed us to share our ideas more easily and broaden our discussions
communication mediums have definitely increased contact
that is awesome. I am going to eBay to buy one
A3: Perhaps most impactful is tech's ability to solve Bloom's 2-sigma problem. Expands individual 1to1 instruction & Ts impact.
yes! Feedback to help drive our instruction. Love flubaroo and Google forms for this.
A3 also edtech allows for more voice and choice and thus students feel invested in their class and lessons
Btw, Andy from St. Charles MO quasi-participating tonight
This fits in well with the digital natives/immigrants "differing abilities" debate. Use of technology is a must.
A1: Video/cameras in hands of almost every Ss has revolutionized they way our students show their understanding and creativity.
Q3 cont. Also most classrooms today have switched to be centered more around the tech and less around the teacher
love using G Forms for this!
A3: Sometimes we think students aren't paying attn, when they're using tech. to expand topics being taught- new way to engage!
Apps & tools that allow students to create their meaning are best. Make it more than a $400 note card.
great advice and some I share. So many tools can become overwhelming. Learn 1-2 deeply then branch out.
I'm rather wild looking, but I am just getting over a cold. hehe
A3 Way more efficient communications. Asynchronous S <=> T, S <=> S, and even, as with T <=> T.
Hey everyone have you hear about Billy and Sharon's new book. Why haven't you bought this genius
A3 Our g3-5 classes post their daily schedules online, with most periods having links to lessons housed on collab. grade blog.
Shouldn't they be centered on the Ss? https://t.co/JnRk1FHrNd
Q3 cont. Also most classrooms today have switched to be centered more around the tech and less around the teacher
A3) When tech tools allow Ss active role in creating (videos, podcasts, blogs, etc) -impacts engagement, highest lvl of bloom's
It is amazing how we can deepen our conversations too! https://t.co/2mcWk3GTMI

A3: Ss consume an enormous amount of info, but also responsible now for creating their own knowledge using tech
I do. I rarely need to ask a question because info is accessible and classmates are too. We know each other better
Could that have possibly in a practicum classroom in 2007? Looks familiar.
the tools we have at our disposal is essential for content creation in autonomous ways.
A3 as a student, classrooms revolve more around technology incorporation rather than professor lectures alone.

I <3 that GForms can be personalized- makes them so much better & can use memes, videos. = fantastic
A3: Ss decide how to show understanding through the tech they choose not the worksheet we set infront of them
Jon are you also an undercover cop
we really are. It's extremely stressful on one hand with testing, but liberating in another way.
Maybe. I can't say. The bad guys might find out.
The Ss are always willing, the challenge is getting the teachers to relinquish that control https://t.co/ZeAlXFyui4
I love how students are willing to try new things as well. It is scary at times, but it ends up being helpful
The efficiency alone should drive any teacher to the tech-side https://t.co/VOqmzMbHti
