Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
Welcome to Power Hour of #dtk12chat Wed. 9pm EST Thank you for joining us on this very special Valentines Day & Ash Wednesday Our hearts, prayers, & thoughts are with families of Stoneman Douglas High School
Tonight’s #dtk12chat topic is around Human-Centered Design aka #designthinking = Empathy + People Typical Q/A format (yet we will start these Official Topics Qs after a few minutes of Check Ins)
Mike from @hightechhigh and @schoolretool in San Diego. This is a difficult day and I am grateful to have been surrounded by amazing students working in the field today. #dtk12chat
Q0 There have been a lot of sad, shocking, & scary moments in educational environments over the last several months (@ericjuli to mention 4 example https://t.co/r8WqWLVEK6) as an educator how are & do you handle life inside (& invading) the classroom? #dtk12chat

Oh yeah had the $$ waiting to be used but never went past the idea stage… I believe a school would be an awesome space to have a mobile space like @steamtruck#dtk12chat

thank you… Ive been writing my #DEEPdt blog for a while and my organization & visual layout needs a major overhaul #dtk12chat a work in progress aka prototype

A0 I feel disconnected from the reality of life and the invasion into the school. Part of isolation of independent school. I feel it more as part of day to day reality. #dtk12chat
Q0: Be the eye of the storm. Be intentional and truthful about how hard the world is and how much education matters, be a shoulder to cry on and a light in the darkness #dtk12chat
A0 - I wish I knew. Right now I feel a little inadequate. When having to go into lockdown with Ss, I am a master of managing these moments to support my Ss, but processing this on my own is a different story. #dtk12chat

If you too are outraged by another school shooting, please consider supporting this Go Fund Me for a Principal Friend @EricJuli who is trying to raise $ for a funeral to bury a student lost to senseless violence. #EdLeader#CaEdChat#EdLeadership#dtk12chat

My toughest years of teaching were in Baltimore City. A lot of tough times and heartache. Thankful to see many of my former students growing up, working and having families. #dtk12chat
Thats an important POV I wonder how many times our students are pushed to get passed the processing of “life” because time & schedule dictate pace… As a teacher when do we take the time to process? #dtk12chat
agreed, but also feel the need to address real world issues. Trying to find the balance of letting kids talk about what they are hearing and seeing w/o scaring; always trying to give hope #dtk12chat
This week (& today especially) I feel heavy wondering if we are making time for what really matters. My boys came home last wk w/ a kindness challenge for a wk, better than nothing but is it enough? #Empathy & #kindness aren't checklists #dtk12chat
A0: I guess my strategy is more about finding the right tools for myself and trying to gain a sense of control or at least a way to make better decisions. #dtk12chat 1/
I know a child who was in attendance at the Florida HS today. She’s okay. Bookend that with the loss of my student last week, and it’s just hard to process it all #dtk12chat
.@scitechyEDU you are facilitating super a powerful #dtk12chat thank you for creating this space. Sadly, I have been told to power down. Hope to catch you all again soon.
Q.5 What does the role of empathy play in “real” moments like this? Is there time to really empathize at the pace Schools are running today? #dtk12chat
There are no right answers to handling these tragedies at school-no rulebooks (I’ve checked) & sadly I’m as much of an expert as anyone (not a badge of honor)-the empathy we value so much in #dtk12chat is an important starting place
Q.5 What does the role of empathy play in “real” moments like this? Is there time to really empathize at the pace Schools are running today? #dtk12chat
A0: I've had training in threat assessment and how to spot behaviors that might need a referral. I've had to use those skills more than once. At one time we didn't have a procedure and well, let's just say I had to deal with a really dicey situation 2/ #dtk12chat
A5 In general I’m not sure time for empathy is a focal point or taking time to allow processing. School are bombarded with standards that need to be covered or test that need to be taken. Or the question of how does this get me in college #dtk12chat
My heart is breaking and I do not have the personal connections you do. Your students are lucky to have you. I hope your heart heals and your cape mends. #dtk12chat
Day 2&3 had to be regular school with support for individuals as needed. Still grief, &anger-I spent time today stopping vengeful behavior-what’s saddest in my environment is that everyone has lost so many to violence-so it becomes normalized & desensitized #dtk12chat
A0: I attended @DarrenLaur 's workshop and I can't say enough good things about them and the need for teens to create relationships with adults they see as experts, confidants and the capacity to do something about bullying, sextortion, etc. #dtk12chat
I still wonder about how students who are “stuck” in school days after things like this or even personal tragedies what do they do with their feelings? Im an adult and I dont even know half the time how to handle my feelings yet I can leave #dtk12chat
All I keep asking is how did we get here? I don't mean the details of this particular shooting. How did we become a society that allows children to feel so hopeless that a gun seems to be the only answer? and How do we fix it? #dtk12chat
We’ll never do that at my school. Teachers are for learning. It’s my job to protect everyone from a need to assess threats. But in the inner city-we don’t need to worry about threat assessments nearly as much as other communities #dtk12chat
Reminder of tonights #dtk12chat topic Human Centered Design aka #designthinking = People + Empathy Yet in light of current tweets and such I am going to try to thread it into the next couple of Qs w/o stopping the flow #dtk12chat
I question that, too. Often. Like... where did we go wrong? How did we let these people down so epically? And how do we find our collective soul again? #dtk12chat
and I feel so powerless. I can vote and campaign for people who I think will make a change but that feels so abstract and removed from any real difference #dtk12chat

Q1 #designthinking is a process/framework, a methodology, & a set of mindsets ALL centered around Empathy + People How can this understanding be utilized in moments like today or can it? #dtk12chat
Most pretend they don’t have feelings and they sneak out in class days or weeks from now. And then we cry or yell or scream then instead of now #dtk12chat

and a delayed response is understandable… I wonder if there is a way to handle something like this as a whole in a meaningful & gentle way that is not looked upon as a waste of time #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat hey @primaryinnovate for some reason some of your tweets are missing the #dtk12chat here’s a nudge nudge bc your words are important part to our convo

It is more about spotting behaviors that we would refer to the proper folks like admin, counselors and the like who would do the actual assessment. #dtk12chat
I think we can use empathy building activities in times like this to help Ss process their emotions. But we have to be careful. Ppl respond so differently #dtk12chat

A1: Don't know, feels like a start might be having Ss share a time they felt lost, out of control or angry and what do they do in those situations? How do they get out of that hole? Can their idea help another? #dtk12chat
I believe teachers (& students) would benefit with some form of training I would presume to put the power of full responsibility on a Ts shoulder yet awareness might be a way to see in the sea of students #dtk12chat
I would like to see #designthinking to develop an ongoing culture of kindness and genuine inclusion. The one-day anti-bullying programs probably do more to isolate people rather than develop the supports needed to help each other accept diversity #dtk12chat
The world is too stressful to process on our own. We all need someone to talk too. Therapists, teachers, friends, partners anyone who will listen w/empathy, not judgment. We need more listeners in our world. #dtk12chat

I feel like this question leads us right back to #DesignThinking - In my experience, it empowers students to take control of their world and make a difference. We need time to cry and process, but when we are left with a ? we might be able to begin talking about empowerment.
A1 I think it starts before moments like this. Working to instill Empathy into our daily practice and behaviors. This helps us have a Empathy foundation that hopefully helps us deal with tragedy when or if it happens #dtk12chat
I saw this tweet last night abt asking Ts to write now all that was on their plate… I believe this exercise would be powerful for Ts & Ss & Admins bc there are too many assumptions and fill in the blank mentalities & Task Masters #dtk12chat More time on Maintenance understanding

#dtk12chat I need to go. I will be back. Kind thoughts all of you who are hurting tonight. Design Thinking can change a nation. I believe that. @mymindSpark#storytelling#sparkon
Q1 #designthinking is a process/framework, a methodology, & a set of mindsets ALL centered around Empathy + People How can this understanding be utilized in moments like today or can it? #dtk12chat
exactly. So how might we design a system where adults can realistically connect and sustain ongoing conversations that build relationships with students? Imagine, one 10 minute conversation with each student per week but logistically is that feasible? #dtk12chat

A2: listening. Last week I stole and idea from @Joe_Sanfelippo - I asked a group of overwhelmed Ts to share everything that was on their plate by writing it on paper plates. Now I can look through and see what I can help take off their plates. #Msaachat#leadlap
It can’t be quantified like that. When students need to talk or I’m trying to build relationships, there are no time limits or saying I need to do something else. It’s just me and the kid(s) until it’s not. Without strong relationships, I’m a failure in this work #dtk12chat
Agreed. And we can’t always lean on family/friends. It’s exhausting for them, too. When schools talk mindfulness and SEL, it should be for ALL, not just students #dtk12chat
I use it in every interview always. “We teach kids here, not content. If you want to teach Shakespeare or Physics or whatever content more than you want to teach these kids, you’re in the wrong place.” #dtk12chat
I agree about the limits to quantifying that and I would like to see more of your approach. You can only be in so many places at once until cloning technology evolves. #dtk12chat
