#TLAP is a weekly chat for educators who embrace author, keynote speaker, and moderator David Burgess' approach of teaching like a pirate. Burgess is author of Teach Like A PIRATE: Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity, and Transform Your Life as an Educator and co-author of P is for PIRATE: Inspirational ABC’s for Educators.
Happy & grateful to host this week’s #tlap focusing on restorative practices (RP). I’m an educational leader committed to serving alternative students, staff & systems. My passion is transforming systems & have found that RP, when implemented authentically, changes lives.
RP is the hardest work I’ve facilitated. It’s also the most magical in that I’ve seen students & adults engage in honest, brave reflection & collective healing. I’d love to see who’s joining us today for #tlap. Please introduce yourself and share your interest in RP.
Phil from Northern Virginia signing in! I teach 7th grade US History II and am also the founder of #waledchat that meets Thursdays at 9pm. Always love a good time with some fellow pirates! #tlap
Good evening #tlap 'ers. I'm Jay from NJ and I'm very interested in learning more about RP and I know this is the place to be ... On the #tlap Ship with @mreruchie
Hi #tlap, Heather, Seattle, Kindergarten teacher. I've just begun a RP journey and started reading last year I'm interested because I want a better way for my students to live and be successful in school and the world.
Maureen, K-6 Instructional Supervisor
Interested in RP for our district and have been attending PD and learning a lot. We are at the very beginning stages of this process. #TLAP
Hello #tlap. Lemarr Treadwell, Fresno CA. Missed you all #CUE18 because I was selected to represent USA at Microsoft #E2 Education Exchange in Singapore. what an honor.
Greetings #tlap! Haven’t been here in a while but feeling the need to connect with the pirate crew! Marci, Implementation Project Manager with @LexiaLearning. Current home: Utah. Former home: NC
With the help of my awesome cadet teacher, Emily Anderson, we sprinkled in some positive teamwork challenges to de-stress during testing last week. 😊 #tlap#t2t#kidsdeserveit
Suzie Henderson Rome, Ga. Have been interested in RP for a year now. As an AP I have handled a lot of the discipline. Traditional discipline doesn’t work for most Ss. Need something that will lead to lasting change. #tlap
Hi I'm Yvette Director/Founder of @inspireNewRo from NY So happy to be here to discuss Restorative Practices. Such an important topic #@RJLeagueChat #tlap
A1: In general, RP can be trauma caused by past teachers that killed the students’ passion for learning and we CAN restore that.
Sometimes some students need more love than others. #TLAP
A1: RP consists of regular time with for groups (student, staff, parent, mixed) to engage in reflective dialogue (referred to as Circles, or Council). Rituals include using a talking stick, and an opening and closing activity. The goal is to connect as a community, #tlap
#TLAP my Ss come from all over the world, and many of them have had difficult histories and are not always treated with the respect they deserve in their community of choice. An RP might be for them and other students in our college to work together on building common bonds.
A1: In general, RP can be trauma caused by past teachers that killed the students’ passion for learning and we CAN restore that.
Sometimes some students need more love than others. #TLAP
A1: Hard for me to answer, because I am just beginning to learn about restorative practices! What I have noticed is that it is very relationship based, not punitive. #tlap
A1P2: Through Circle/Council, RP provides space, structure & practice for reflection, healing, accountability & growth. RP ensures healthy, productive staff can facilitate/support student healing & academic, behavioral, & social emotional growth. #tlaphttps://t.co/CGojTe7orL
Wow question 1 was a long one ... felt like one of middle school students taking a mandated test ... should I cite textual evidence? Sorry for the snarkiness
#tlap
A1 RP seems to be a system of shared respect for all members of the school community. Caring for each person's needs, felt and real. This could create a bully-free zone. #RP#TLAP
A1 It's transformational because it creates an environment of mutual respect and collaboration. With RP works to create an environment of growth for both the victim and the perpetrator (also the entire community) #tlap
A1: Restorative practices allow us to support students in repairing damaged relationships and supports them in taking responsibility for their actions without further eroding trust or feelings of security #TLAP
Hey! My name is Denise. I'm a Transformational Lifestyle Design Coach, joining #tlap this evening to see how this Twitter chat works and support my girl, @mreruchie while learning about RP. Excited to be here with transformational leaders <3
A1: It sounds like it is a way to conduct conversations w/ Ss who need support for working through trauma. I feel anything that supports social emotional needs of Ss is a MUST have! #TLAP
A1P3: When a community member causes harm, then the RP council can be used to facilitate Restorative Justice. The practice of having the “victim” explain the impact of harm and opportunity for “culprit” to restore the damage. #tlap
A1 Developing opportunities to share value and human interaction. Dialogue in a repsctful manner and learn about difference in a way that is positive and not as means of division. #tlap
Yeah, lady. Noticed that. We miss you and all the good that you have to share. Doing well. Crazy awesome day today in the Lab. @koduteam Design Challenge kicked off our final days before spring break. #tlap
#tlap A1: EVERYONE is carrying around baggage/scars/damage. Not everyone wears it on their sleeve. Not everyone's is public. Just assume it's there......and make your classroom and presence part of the healing process. Kindness. Humility.
A1: Restorative Conferences/Conversations have transformed the way we approach student conflict. In RP the cofocus is on repairing the harm caused on both sides. Everyone is heard. #sd113a#tlap
A1: I have heard of restorative practice but am not too familiar with it. It seems like a way to get students to think about what they are doing and how it affects others. Helps them be more aware of the actions they take. #tlap
In my world we often look at relationships in history ... I am social studies ... so there is a lot of trying to understand people and relationships from a historical perspective #tlap
A1 Its always helpful to stop and look at the goal of any instance of misbehavior, miscommunication, or misinterpretation. Often times there is opportunity to win the goal and win the relationship through something restorative. #tlap
A1: It’s about building relationships with your ss and helping them build relationships with each other. It’s about actively listening, admitting when you make a mistake, and working hard to restore the relationship. It’s about humility and grace. #tlap
A1. One of the things I love about #tlap is the opportunity to learn about new topics. This is one of them for me. I love what I am already seeing about the power of relationships in repairing & rebuilding
A1: We have too many ways of dealing with behavior that center on punishment or surface level reflection. I feel like RP gives kids real skills to solve their problems and get at the heart of what caused the behavior #tlap
AWESOME! We did exothermic reactions today and it was great!
I presented in a couple of conferences the last couple of weeks and have been trying to make up time with my family for that reason! :) #tlap
#TLAP I'm Jen from MO, 8th grade Science. Here because by two fave ed topics are in same place...TLAP and #RestorativePractices . Can't wait to soak it in! :)
A1: RP can be the one thing you do in your classroom or building that reaches the unreachable kid, bringing that kid and the rest into healing and and strength. #tlap
A1: Howdy #tlap ~ we are researching RP and implementing a bit at a time. There is SO much #SEL power in connecting through restorative circles and letting people right wrongs through restorative practices! https://t.co/3R4mtiSP9H
A1 from what I’ve learned it’s a process that is intentional in increasing communications & finding solutions when the learning environment has been compromised by creating mutual respect and understanding various perspectives #tlap
A1: It's not punitive, but a culture within a school/district where students learn accountability and adults are there to listen and support this social-emotional growth. It's so much more, but I'm still learning... #tlap
A1. RP is an alternate way to look at how to handle Ss behavior. Instead offering consequence it’s tries to get to the root cause of behaviors and teach Ss alternate strategies to cope w frustration. I believe this practice can change schools by offer Ss tools for life #tlap
A1 from what I’ve learned it’s a process that is intentional in increasing communications & finding solutions when the learning environment has been compromised by creating mutual respect and understanding various perspectives #tlap
A1: Taking advantage of failures and teachable moments. Causing Ss and Ts to reflect on choices and responses. Placing yourself in another's shoes. #tlap
A1: RP in my classroom & school is done every morning, every member of the class gets to answer/speak about the question/topic. We use a talking piece & you can talk or pass. It has built positive relationships, positive problem solving & a community of trust. #tlap
A1 Its always helpful to stop and look at the goal of any instance of misbehavior, miscommunication, or misinterpretation. Often times there is opportunity to win the goal and win the relationship through something restorative. #tlap
A1: Restorative practices allow us to support students in repairing damaged relationships and supports them in taking responsibility for their actions without further eroding trust or feelings of security #TLAP
A2: Someone who seeks harmony and builds community around them. They presume positive intent. They build relationships and are able to straight with others. #tlap

A1: Everyone is fighting their own personal battle of some kind. It’s being aware of yourself and others and how we take care of/respond to ourselves/others #tlap
A1. RP is an alternate way to look at how to handle Ss behavior. Instead offering consequence it’s tries to get to the root cause of behaviors and teach Ss alternate strategies to cope w frustration. I believe this practice can change schools by offer Ss tools for life #tlap
A2: Focused on positivity, uplifting, understanding, active listener, game changer, dream chaser, encourager, and someone who realizes sometimes kids need structure but sometimes they just need a hug! Compassion and nurturing. But, it does look different for every situation #TLAP
✨A1: TODAY IS A NEW DAY! Restorative practice is focusing on new beginnings, kindness, compassion, being friendly, offering hope, & "being the change you wish to see in the world!" It is something that should always be infused into our schools and classrooms!✨#TLAP
A2: People who have a restorative mindset/heartset are: authentic, reflective, can build trust, listen with their heart & mind, embrace difficult & awkward situations, seek growth, provide opportunities for others to grow, and are human/student focused to their core. #tlap
A2: Someone who wears strengths goggles when viewing a person, someone who is intentional about making connections that are for the purpose of investing. #tlap
A1 It's transformational because it creates an environment of mutual respect and collaboration. With RP works to create an environment of growth for both the victim and the perpetrator (also the entire community) #tlap
A2: To be involved in RP one must be empathetic and open to understanding all points of view. We must also be able to connect and build relationships with all #tlap
A2P2: A truly restorative person doesn’t just serve students, staff, & community but savors life w them. They recognize that they walk in life alongside students & we are connected beyond academic learning & are impacted by the shared human experience. #tlap
A2 If you are going to demonstrate RP then you gave to see an unwanted behavior as a sign of something going on with the person. Assume the best of each person and be supportive when things get tough. #RP#TLAP
A2. The RP mind is reflective and compassionate. They are solutions-based over problem-centered. They think outside the box and value relationships above all #tlap
A2: Someone with patience and perseverance. It’s about being able to take those deep breaths and responding with a calm kindness instead of making a frustrating situation worse. #tlap
Getting the word from the wife that it's time to bring the little one to bed. Sorry I couldn't really contribute much tonight. Maybe next week. Night everyone. #tlap
A2: Positive, supportive, kind, understand and respectful. It’s showing empathy and compassion. If you model as a teacher, it will trickle to other staff and Ss as well. #tlap
A2: Someone who has compassion shinning through full force. They understand the power of building relationships & that everyday is a fresh start. #TLAP
A1: Taking advantage of failures and teachable moments. Causing Ss and Ts to reflect on choices and responses. Placing yourself in another's shoes. #tlap
A1: In my experience, the school’s I’ve worked in use social skills programs to integrate RP into everyday learning. Second Step, PBIS, and Buddy Benches have parts to introduce the skills of being a friend and good citizen while continuously practicing them daily! #TLAP
A2: Someone who encourages rather than discourages students no matter the situation. These educators show kindness and compassion to their students. They are forgiving of student mistakes and also own up to their own mistakes. #tlap
A1: Our school has focused on climate and building community through the use of community circles. Students are given a voice & like the opportunity to be heard by their peers. I’ve seen a positive change within my classroom and school. It’s a great practice! #tlap
A2: Someone who genuinely likes Ss and adults. Compassionate, reflective, good listening skills, and knows how to cultivate authentic relationships. #tlap
A2: It is critical to honestly look a life through the lens of the person you disagree with. We have to assume that people make the decision they do for a coherent reason regardless of our opinion #tlap
A2. Someone who teaches RP needs to be patient. Many Ss are used to acting out as a way of avoiding situations. RP will give Ss skills to cope but there will be a learning curve. Ts need to be patient as Ss learn to use new strategies and not resort to old behaviors. #tlap
A2 #TLAP someone who wants to engage in restorative practice is a person ready to hear the truth other people are telling, be they students, colleagues, community members. When we listen to hear and understand, we offer our support and dignify the person.
A2: I think that a person implementing RP would need to possess the characteristics of kindness, empathy, patience, positivity, and a good listener. #tlap
#tlap A2a Hello, this is Ash from Indonesia. I have certain observations on characteristics of people who exhibit this quality. First and foremost, they exhibit a strong conviction. They believe they are right when they follow their mind.
A2. Someone who teaches RP needs to be patient. Many Ss are used to acting out as a way of avoiding situations. RP will give Ss skills to cope but there will be a learning curve. Ts need to be patient as Ss learn to use new strategies and not resort to old behaviors. #tlap
A2: Someone working on RP listens to Ss voice and facilitates steps to problem solve rather than assigning consequences. They encourage Ss to reflect and grow from their missteps through open conversation. They teach Ss appropriate ways to react to situations. #tlap
#tlap A2: Patient. Not anxious to have all of their Qs answered quickly. Let Ss explore.
Firm in their softness. Assuming good intent.
Thankful. Praise Ss when they offer their voice.
"There is no problem that cannot be solved by an increase in humility"--J. Nicholson
A2. I believe a Connected Educator = Connected Students. A Connected Educators knows its not about technology its about relationships, relationships and relationships. #tlap
A2 Someone in this work will listen to all, be respectful, use language that doesn't place blame. You have to be willing to share how the behaviour/incident has affected you #tlap
A2: Incorporating restorative practices takes putting “how we’ve always done things” and our own biases aside. It is not about our feelings, it is about what is best for the child right in front of us. #tlap
A2: Kids are people pleasers and excited to prove themselves until they’re taught not to. Instilling confidence, pride, generosity, and EMPATHY are extremely important for students (and adults) wanting to work with RP! #TLAP
A3: I check in with my kids everyday as part of their warm-up. It's a perfect way to start implementing restorative practices in your classroom! #tlaphttps://t.co/H06uBn5Pup
#tlap A2b Secondly, they respect others who follow their mind. Even if their minds work differently. They intuitively know the difference between those who are authentic and original and those who are not.
A2: be reflective about the original situation. Try to view things from multiple angles. Consider how it felt from all parties involved and how in the future all parties can leave a similar situation in a better state. #tlap
I don't think people intrinsically do the right thing ... i think we are driven by desire ... the "right" thing can be driven by outside forces. Remember many Nazis thought they were doing the "right" thing ... Christians thought slavery was the "right" thing #tlap
A3 It's about having those real conversations with students building a sense of trust and community. It opens all participant towards acceptance. #tlap
✨A2: THEY ADVOCATE FOR THE UNDERDOG. Someone who embraces restorative practices is the type of person who will offer out their hand to help others who are in a tough spot and need someone the most! #TLAP✨
A3: 1) Courageous adults ready to learn, and be uncomfortable. 2) Ongoing training for all staff & students in RP. 3) Clear process and expectations of the practice. 4) Data collection system to monitor qualitative & quantitative impact of RP. #tlap
A1: Everyone is fighting their own personal battle of some kind. It’s being aware of yourself and others and how we take care of/respond to ourselves/others #tlap
A2: Students need to know without a question of doubt that they are loved unconditionally. No. Matter. What!!!! Set high expectations & believe that they can reach for the stars! They will rise💞🌟💞 #tlap
A2: Someone who is calm, approachable, non-confrontational, humble, non-defensive, apologetic, self-aware, empathetic, able to hold others and him/herself accountable, makes an effort to maintain relationships, resolves conflict and de-escalates, positive attitude. #TLAP
A3P2: 4) Expectations for behavior & clear consequences for harm that violates ed code/penal code. 5) Circles: dedicated & consistent time for students & staff to share reflections on hopes, goals, trauma, current issues impacting students, the school or community. #tlap
A3 we started with a staff RP book study to wet our appetites. We have used our in-service days to focus exclusively on SEL (no core instruction) and we created the time daily for adult:student interactions in Advisory. Our Dean runs RP circles in our alt we room too #tlap
A3P3 Establishing agreed upon beliefs of the work and a collective mission vision are foundational elements that are a must. Below is a sample my team created. #tlap#LeadLAP
Firstly, believe that the resistant are fully capable of embracing change. Training, followed by feedback and consistent practice will help staff with their comfort in embracing authentic reflection and connetion. #tlap
A2: Empathy! This work requires understanding & compassion. At the end of the day everyone wants to have connections with others. With RP we can help facilitate important questions to help our Ss take accountability & repair any harm that was caused to restore relationships #tlap

As a student teacher, I am inspired by what has been mentioned in this chat. I will need to read a book on RP to educate myself more. Wish I had more to contribute! #tlap
A1: RP is a social approach to repairing relationships that have been broken but are repairable through communication, understating, & consensus. #tlap
#TLAP A3 While we do not explicitly pursue restorative practices, we approach #ESOL instruction as an opportunity for RP work. For example, our Ss through a party for the whole campus every semester, so they can share the wonderful flavors of their culture with other Ss.
A3. It's having real conversations with Ss and building relationships with them. Talking to them, listening to their stories, and asking questions. #tlap
A3: Recently did an RP Circle on the Florida tragedy. Heavy topic. Start with a non-threatening question like, in three words or less, tell my how you’re feeling about this week. Also, have a talking stick. #tlap
We have to treat our kids like people not test score generators. Know them ... really know them as people. Not define them by the data that sits in front of us. #tlap
A3: We do a restorative circle every morning. Questions/ topics are based on Ss needs. We have a list of questions to guide us when helping Ss that we wear on a lanyard. I also created a calming corner in my classroom. Ss can go there as needed during the day. #tlap
✨A3: Our school has a lot of great programs in place including @2ndStepProgram, student families, and a H.O.P.E. Squad. We are celebrating H.O.P.E. Week this week! #TLAP✨
A3: Meditation/Mindfulness was a key component, along with journaling every day. Sometimes we stopped what we were doing for “Ms. Leigh Real Talk” lessons about life. At the end of the days it was all about our relationships #tlap
A3: SHARE BALL! My students spend time sharing something on Monday’s & asking questions on Friday’s while having fun 🙌🏻 It begins the conversations between students & opens the door to building relationships throughout the year-it’s a great way to begin & end the week! #TLAP
#TLAP A4 The biggest thing that needs to exist for RP to take place is the freedom to step away from the treadmill of the daily classroom routine and really spend time working on and listening to student narratives. When we give ourselves time to listen, we learn from our Ss.
A3: I made it a practice to have lunch with my Ss, particularly Ss who have been exhibiting attention seeking behaviors in class. Eating together and having a conversation strengthens relationships and helps me understand what issues they are facing in life. #tlap
A4: RP is not for the faint of heart. Every person must be brave & willing to reflect while facing uncomfortable truths about themselves. RP takes courage as you must be willing to explore harm done to you & to address any harm you have inflicted. Trust is a must. #tlap
A4: We need to grow away from sending Ss who make bad choices away to a mindset that keeps them, listens to them, coaches them, gives them grace, holds them responsible and lets them repair and restore things they've harmed. We must value a culture of 2nd chances! #tlap
A2: Someone who is calm, approachable, non-confrontational, humble, non-defensive, apologetic, self-aware, empathetic, able to hold others and him/herself accountable, makes an effort to maintain relationships, resolves conflict and de-escalates, positive attitude. #TLAP

A3. I use a lot of yoga and visualization techniques to help Ss. We start many days out with deep breathing, setting intentions and visualizing reaching our goals. I teach the 7 habits to Ss as well. #tlap
A4: I think that one of the main elements that has made Restorative Practices effective in my school this year is that our principal, @diane_mackinnon, built daily time for it into our master schedule. We also have support and buy-in from the entire faculty & effective PD. #tlap
#tlap A4: For restorative practices to be effective there must be agreement both implicit and EXPLICIT that our goal is the young PEOPLE we are working with, not the content they learn or the test scores they earn.
Students are not the MEANS, they are the END.
A4: The district I’m in now really focuses on praising when good RP is happening with coworkers and the whole staff, which makes me feel like more people care, support, and love me as a person, not just an educator! #TLAP
#tlap
A weekly homework assignment to my 5th graders is to commit a random act of kindness and sharing it with classmates on Monday. We write them on daisy chain slips and link them together in an attempt to go wrap our room in kindness, as many loops as possible.
A4 To have RP working school wide all staff need to be trained, use a consistent language with S's, and a consistent tool box to apply like Restorative Circles etc. #tlap
A4 more time to digest materials and Learn. More Training! There is a willingness to try new approaches, we clearly see that punitive does not work. #tlap#sd113a#oqms
✨A4: ALL HANDS IN! For restorative practices to be truly effective you need total buy-in. If all hands are in your school's culture and vibe will reflect it!✨ #TLAP
I believe in all my heart, students really want to know how to help themselves. Assuming that's something they "should know better from" is the misconception. Behavior & how to respond to our problems needs to be explicitly taught. Then things will move forward & we all grow!
I am learning a lot tonight, but RP seems similar to love and logic. Are those approaches similar, and what book would you recommend for me to read to get more information about this? I want to learn about this especially as a soon to be 1st year teacher. #tlap
#tlap Q4 We are building a culture of teachers watching for whatever families & kids need. We use Bucket Filler program to encourage kind acts. We work to be problem solvers. Is that part of RP?
ABSOLUTELY. It sounds like your school may be implementing restorative justice, which is one component of this work. Restorative Practices has to include your community. #tlap
A4: There are no barriers for me to implement in my room, however there are other staff involved in recess and other parts of the day that use other practices. My admin is experimenting with the older grades, I think a shift is coming! #TLAP
A4: It has to be an "all-in" approach. We have to believe in each and every child's potential and carry the weight of responsibility for helping them through the process. Doesn't matter whose class the Ss is assigned - we must all work together! #tlap
A4 For RP to really be a game changer it has to be consistent and add value. All stakeholders should be involved and healing has to happen. Our Ss (and Ts) need to learn from the process and heal. When that happens it's magical. Then you have to keep it going #tlap
#tlap

A3: I done have formal experience, but I feel like I know some. I really like to use a 3-part apology when something happens 1. What happened. 2. How it affected the person. 3.What you are doing to do to fix it. I also like classroom meetings to discuss group issues. #TLAP
Leadership matters. Being a model matters. Kudos to your principal, she is creating a system in which RP can reside and grow. #Leadershipmatters. #TLAP
A4: I think that one of the main elements that has made Restorative Practices effective in my school this year is that our principal, @diane_mackinnon, built daily time for it into our master schedule. We also have support and buy-in from the entire faculty & effective PD. #tlap
A1: RP open a doorway to reflection and repair. It also allows each party to embrace their role and to assist in the process of growth and development. #Tlap
A4. Collaboration, Community, Culture, Trust- where everyone is responsible, reflecting, trying to do better, become good listeners and learners! #tlap
A4. A platform to explain the process to the entire learning community. When folks understand the purpose they can become a part of the solution at a deeper level. #tlap
A4: I would need to make sure that every student notices that he/she matters and that the classroom is truly a safe space for ALL of my students. #tlap
A5: The education community needs to come together under the uniting belief that positive relationships foster growth & success. Discipline practices then need to shift to involve meaningful conversations where all stakeholders are involved in the conversation to improve. #tlap
A4: We need to grow away from sending Ss who make bad choices away to a mindset that keeps them, listens to them, coaches them, gives them grace, holds them responsible and lets them repair and restore things they've harmed. We must value a culture of 2nd chances! #tlap
A3: Circle talks and Restorative conferences with students. In the classroom, circles have fostered a strong sense of community where students feel comfortable sharing their feelings and speaking their truth. #tlap
A5 generally getting all of our staff on the same page. We’ve been talking about rest. Justice all year, but that’s usually where things sit at my school. We talk and implement some aspects of it, but nothing else. #tlap
A5: A barrier I’ve observed & faced is adult comfort level with facilitating circles. This can be overcome by providing training, resources in the form of prepared questions, practice and feedback. It’s helpful to have co-facilitators. Build training time into budget. #tlap
A5 people being Brave and vulnerable enough to share their feelings. It can be done but will require modeling from admin and lead teachers. It all comes back to people and culture #TLAP
A4 Courage! I believe for any positive growth, a District, school, classroom needs leaders with the Courage it takes to face struggles with heart, challenges with compassion & successes with celebration!! #tlap
A5: The biggest barrier in my classroom is me making the time for it and reminding myself that it is equally important to Ss as is the curriculum. The barrier outside my room is getting all on board with the need for RP. #tlap
A5: There's only so much I can do in my classroom. When I have to ask a student to go to the office for us all to get a little break, there is very little admin follow-through. It's just chat + lunch detention, not really RP :( #tlap
#TLAP A5
I think getting buried in minutia is the greatest and most difficult barrier to overcome. If we are busy with the drudgery of daily work, we may forget to look up and actually see the people we are teaching. They are the reason we are there, but it's easy to forget...
#tlap A4: For restorative practices to be effective there must be agreement both implicit and EXPLICIT that our goal is the young PEOPLE we are working with, not the content they learn or the test scores they earn.
Students are not the MEANS, they are the END.
A4: Punishing Ss often feeds the shame cycle. Restorative practices empowers Ss to understand not only how to repair relationships but to also help restore belief in themselves, and, therefore, hope for their future.
And hope is everything. #TLAP
A5P2 Here is a sample of an agenda, with prompts, that I've used in this work with staff. This meeting was mission critical as we were experiencing fractures impacting relationships & work. #tlap#LeadLAP
A5: Biggest obstacles will be to get all players on the same page and come to a common belief that all kids want to do well and be good and it is our job to teach them, not punish them #tlap
#tlap A5: The biggest obstacle to restorative practices is the misguided attitude and implicit belief that Ts and Ss are merely the givers and takers of tests. To change: Ts who act on this belief cannot continue to be rewarded and recognized for tenure.
A close second is HIPPA.
I do a check-in with Google Forms, too! It’s a great way to keep track of students, but it also helps them to stop and focus on their own environment! #tlap
A5 People misunderstanding the framework and assuming it's just a way to decrease suspensions. People also don't believe that students should be left to lead this work. We must educate everyone. The best way to do this is to lead a circle & invite people to experience it #tlap
A4: Recognize that while it feels uncomfortable and unnatural, it saves relationships. I gauge how well I am doing by how freely my ss talk to me. If they openly admit I made them angry, etc. I feel like I’m doing a good job. It tells me lines of comm are open. #TLAP
A5 The greatest barrier is in not training all staff, everyone needs the courses and practice to implement RP. It is essential new staff get Inserviced too continue the consistency across the building #tlap
A4: Punishing Ss often feeds the shame cycle. Restorative practices empowers Ss to understand not only how to repair relationships but to also help restore belief in themselves, and, therefore, hope for their future.
And hope is everything. #TLAP
A5 The greatest barrier is fear of/rejecting change. Some educators are “by the book” policy followers and until restorative practices are written and mandated - they won’t be practiced. #tlap
A5: Time, antiquated policies/procedures and a muddy understanding of RP with no support for the T nor S. We must develop a collaborative culture focused on supporting ALL Ss where we share a common language on how to make it happen. #tlap
A5: Helping the community understand that it is more than just reducing suspensions/expulsions...it is a way to save kids, and to empower them to become who they are meant to become. #tlap
✨CONSISTENCY IS KEY. For restorative practices to become part of your school's culture, you need buy-in and consistency. All staff must consistently walk the walk AND talk the talk, in and out of the classroom!✨ #TLAP
A4. A mindset shift need to happen. Ss need to be part of the solution and need to know that ts believe in them and aren’t giving up, even if the Ss has. Sending them out of the room further solidifies negative feelings. #tlap
A5 I see an obstacle being changing the mindset from a culture that recognizes the punitive aspect as a primary option to one that values the people within the culture and instead starts to recognize that sometimes the consequence to a situation is restoration itself #tlap
A5: I feel like more information should be provided especially to pre-service teachers like myself who will be the next generation of teachers. I am inspired by all of you and feel like I learn from some of the best, but I am not where I want to be in regards to RP. #tlap
A4: EVERYONE must take ownership of learning and growing together. PD is imperative so staff feel supported & be willing to shift their mindsets! #tlap
A4: An understanding of its effectiveness through training and practical application, a total district commitment to the process as well as consistent support from every level. #TLAP
A5 The greatest barrier is fear of/rejecting change. Some educators are “by the book” policy followers and until restorative practices are written and mandated - they won’t be practiced. As with most things, gentle persistence will overcome. #tlap
A4. A mindset shift need to happen. Ss need to be part of the solution and need to know that ts believe in them and aren’t giving up, even if the Ss has. Sending them out of the room further solidifies negative feelings. #tlap
A3: We discuss our feelings and daily goals during Morning Meeting each day. I also use the 2x10 strategy to build a relationship with each of my kids. #tlap
A5: There is a mindset of "kids who are bad need to be punished". They are quickly labeled as bullies, problem children, etc.
I have never met a child who wants to act out. There is always way more to the story. This is the message we need to share. #tlap
🙌. A5 - Everyone in the school needs to be receive the same training in order to successfully integrate RP throughout the school. In an International school where teachers are constantly moving, there needs to be continued training! #tlap
A5 The greatest barrier is in not training all staff, everyone needs the courses and practice to implement RP. It is essential new staff get Inserviced too continue the consistency across the building #tlap
It's hard to get some people to believe that all kids (or Ts for that matter) want to do well. Education has such a deep rooted punishment system, it's hard to change that mindset but it is so worth it. #tlap
A5: The adults have to be patient and willing to invest time in the process. It isn't easy, and there will be stumbling blocks along the way for these kids. Sometimes it may look like two steps forward and one step back, so people have to be trained to look forward. #tlap
A5: TIME. It’s my nemesis, enemy, swash-buckling Scallywag. There’s so many other things mandated in so little time, I would LOVE to spend more time on relationships! #TLAP
A4: I love that when I started this year at Old Quarry RP circles were something teachers were already comfortable with and implementing day 1 to get to know students. Buy in is so important! #tlap
@canicke this was 💯 for navigating the giphy website and how to make the actual gifs. Then Ss copied the link of the gif they created and uploaded it on #padlet
I love this...we used this @CentralCabotpK4. Teachers spend 2 minutes a day for 10 days with an individual, and talk nothing about school...just chatting and learning each other. #tlap
#tlap family-My apologies for missing this special chat-I have so much to add about #restorativepractices...I'll try to catch up a little tonight and this week! Stay tuned!
A5: I think the biggest barrier initially is the change in mindset. The shift from simply assigning consequences to truly learning from our mistakes. Also, being willing to take the time to build trust. RP can't be effective until you have developed a trusting relationship. #tlap

A3: I’m a little late to the chat, but we have instituted the BIST philosophy which is all about grace, accountability, and teaching students who have missing skills (ie behavior). It also includes processing w Ss when they act out. #tlap#323learns
A5. The biggest obstacle is the inappropriate attitude, the improper behavior, the person who just doesn't get along with anyone, etc. To change we all need to trust, coll., part., learn, listen, improve, etc. #tlap
One of the greatest pitfalls in education. The training one and done. If it's important to the system then we train-implement-monitor/assess-adjust-train and so on..#tlap

A6: Check out @2ndStepProgram for Early Elementary! I’ve used it at multiple schools and feel like it’s a great way to explicitly teach social and communication skills that set students up for success as they grow up and work with different people. #TLAP

Two words: Google Keep
Awesome way to grab resources and label them. Trying to encourage more Ss to use this as they do research for junior & senior papers #tlap
✨A6: CHALLENGE THEM! I try to challenge my students at least once a quarter to do a #RAK to enhance their learning and promote a culture of kindness and restorative practices. We reflect a lot during the process about how it feels to help others and be kind.✨#TLAP
I’ve just had the privilege of studying RP for the last four years. Feel free to ask questions or to check out my work here: https://t.co/tfmfpgPiXD#tlap
We do what we think is the most important. Period. You are doing amazing work with your kids and they need you to connect with them. Thank you for your work. #tlap
A5. Inconsistancy with implementation and lack of buy in. This has to be a complete mind shift in practice in order to work successfully. Ss will look for gaps so everyone needs to be involved #tlap
Yes! Participating in kindness activities or RAKs can open the door to some incredible conversations, and cultivate compassion and empathy for others in the process! Love this! #tlap
#TLAP a6
We share food. It is a small thing, but a big thing, because we can share recipes, and flavors, and praise each other's contributions, and feel a little more like family around a table. We can show care by making sure our food is appropriate and safe for all. plus fun!
A7: What makes a good friend? // What is your ideal way to spend an afternoon? // If you had a million dollars, what would you do? // Do you feel safe at school? // If you could change one thing about our school, what would it be? #tlap

A7: I saw this and liked it. What happened? What were you thinking at the time? What have you thought about since. Who did you hurt? How can you make things right #tlap
A7. My first recommendation - integrate circles into everything you do… novel studies, geography discussions, math problem solving… make RP a part of what you do as opposed to in addition to what you do #tlap
#tlap A7: Tell me about a time this year when you felt "successful." Discuss what elements or scenarios came (were brought) together to support your success.
What obstacles did you overcome? How?
How can set yourself up for success going forward?
A7: If you could have a superpower what would it be and why? Describe a time that you felt voiceless. How have you been hurt or harmed by our educational system? Discuss a time that you caused harm and your response to what you did. Describe a time you felt truly loved. #tlap
These are the questions for a restorative conversation. Great for individual convos, small group, and whole class. I have my Ss write their answers first, for extra processing time. #tlap

Heading off to bed. As always thank you for an informative and INSPIRING chat looking forward to buying some RP books and next week's chat 💕 goodnight! #tlap

#TLAP A7 In the past, when I was teaching younger students, I would have them write "I am the one who" poems and share them. Poetry can give students freedom to share difficult and complex things. The sharing allows the rest of us to listen and really understand...
A7: I’ve been using this! It models a mix of questions that lead to discussions naturally that I can ask, parents can use, and students can practice with each other. #TLAP
A7 Who is a role model in your life? What characteristics do they possess that you admire? What are qualities in yourself you are proud of? Who can you inspire? ☺️ #tlap
A7 Describe a time that you felt you had no voice? What are the consequences (to you and others) of being voiceless? Have you ever felt harmed by your educational system? How do you handle that? #tlap
A7: I've seen Principals ask students to write what happened from the other kids' perspective; I wonder if that would work in a RP circle, too, to build perspective and nurture empathy and compassion. #tlap
Special thanks to @mreruchie for guiding this critical and empowering discussion on #RestorativePractices tonight in #tlap. Please give her a follow & add her to your PLN. She is a fantastic resource for all things RP and more. Plus...a family friend!!
I used to do a similar activity with MS students. We would write it anonymously and share. It made students realize we are all similar and share common experiences. #tlap

#tlap is the best way for me to start off my week. The infectious optimism helps me stay in a positive mindset all week! I hope you'll consider joining me as @ToddRisser and @misskoplin guest host #waledchat this Thursday at 9pm ET. Reflection is always better together!

A7 RP is an opportune time to practice empathy & theory of mind - I love asking Ss “How do you think those actions/words made _____ feel?” “Why might we have reacted like we did?” “What do you think is the best way to do better next time?” #tlap
I would agree with that statement 100%! There is no one queen of kindness! We all share the joy and beauty of kind hearts shining for the world to see! ❤️ #tlap
✨A7: ZONES OF REGULATION can be used help students recognize their own feeling as well as anticipate when others might be having a rough time and how to help them. #TLAP✨
Tired this morning? Feeling exhausted, overwhelmed?
Just imagine how some of our students feel after a week-long break with no parental support, shortage of meals, and lack of conversation, hugs, and love from peers and their teacher.
Take time today to care and support.
#TLAP There's a version of this that expands it a little. What headwinds have you faced, and what tailwinds have moved you forward. That's if you don't want to limit it to people who helped or impacted the Ss in some way...
You can also have students bring in talking pieces, or change them periodically. In some situations (cautiously) you can have more than 1 talking stick #tlap
Thank you @mreruchie facilitating a great conversation around #RestorativePractices! Your passion and commitment to R.P. was evident in every tweet tonight #tlap
I love that parents are included in the resources. Having all community stakeholders on board to understanding common language/practices makes a huge difference! #tlap
Thank you thank you for a wonderful chat. What a wealth of knowledge and resources to work through for the rest of the week! Thank you, #TLAP chatter and moderators!
