Karin - I produce documentaries for National Geographic and run an educational nonprofit. It's my first tweetchat so please forgive me in advance for any breach of etiquette! #TeachSC#5thchat

A1: To be frank, limiting student ability by placing them in a box of what we “think” they can do. How about we give them the opportunity to show us what they CAN do?! #5thchat#TeachSC
A1 - What grind my gears ⚙️ is when there is a lack of follow through on someone in the school community (Admin, T or staff). Also when PPL are not committed to the mission of the school. I also can’t stand gossip by anyone! #5thChat#TeachSC
A1: Steven took the words right out of my mouth. I'm constantly talking with my students about growth mindset. Sometimes children are limited by the adults around them. #teachSC#5thchat
A1: To be frank, limiting student ability by placing them in a box of what we “think” they can do. How about we give them the opportunity to show us what they CAN do?! #5thchat#TeachSC
A1. I am tired of .....
following educators on Twitter and then viewing their political tweets.
I love learning about education every day but a person's political beliefs? No thanks. #5thchat
A1- I'm TIRED of worksheets for science. How does a reading passage on wolves with 5 questions help me with inquiry and the design process? #teachsc#5thchat
A1: I am tired of not being able get to everything I would like in a day. I don't have time for ME! (Until super late at night... which then in turn makes me sleepy the next morning because I am up so late!) #teachsc#5thchat
Q2: Show grace and mercy by replying to that extra email from the parent struggling to support their kid from home, even though you have already provided support in your newsletter #teachSC#5thchat
Teachers need to be compassionate and extra loving towards all Ss, especially the Ss who do not look forward to the holiday season. We are having our thanksgiving lunch and will be eating with Ss tomorrow! #teachSC#5thchat
In reply to
@JuliePJones, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz
I wrote these quotes in my journal- pulled from @rydercarroll 's new book on Bullet Journaling #bujo It totally applies to your thoughts on paperwork. #teachsc#5thchat
In reply to
@HistoryKimma, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz, @rydercarroll
A2: Remember that we are all dealing with the stress that comes with the holiday season. While it is a time a cheer, it can be a time of trauma for some. Keep your heart soft for others. #teachsc#5thchat
A2: There are many children that this time of year is the hardest due to finances, family support, etc. the holidays can be very difficult for many of our children. Let’s remember that social-emotional needs are just as, if not more important than curricular. #5thchat#TeachSC
To show grace and mercy all educators need to remember that the holidays are not always pleasant or fun for students so be extra patient with S’s this time of year. We rarely know all of the trauma and drama going on in their lives. Increase your empathy! #teachsc#5thChat
Struggling w/this one. 1 kiddo who's on a mission to steal my religion. She's a force of nature that all the kids follow. I pray for her daily. I greet her warmly when she comes to my class. I don't raise my voice when she acts out...but it's tough. #teachsc#5thChat
In reply to
@JuliePJones, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz
A2. Educators can work toward increasing their knowledge of cultural awareness about Native Americans. The graphic below is NOT something to display. Please take a minute and read this https://t.co/mZJcp4DXqN#5thChat
A1: To show grace and mercy we need to remember that school is some children's happy and safe place. We need hug, high five, and listen a little more during this time of year. #teachsc#5thchat
They notice tone before all else. So true. We need to be mindful of so many things when talking to children. In the end, they want to know their teacher loves them and likes them. #teachsc#5thchat
A3: The students that I have currently are adults, but they have room to grow as we all do. A little love and patience helps growth more than condemnation. #TeachSC#5thChat
A2: Ts should be cognizant of their students' actions/reactions to certain topics that are discussed during this time of year. Everyone's holiday experience is not the same. #TeachSC#5thchat
Yes. When we count down the days, some kids see that as counting down until we don't have to see them. How sad a message. Can we instead celebrate their time and give them count down calendars for the break so they can look forward to coming back to school? #teachsc#5thchat
I think we often lose sight of the needs of students...even as they get older. My students label it as me "therapizing" them...but the hope is to focus on growth and scaffolding...at any age #TeachSC#5thchat A3
A3: Reminding them that making a little progress is better than no progress. We try to find the littlest of things to celebrate. If we spend time celebrating the little things, pretty soon we'll be celebrating the big things! Mistakes are part of the journey! #teachsc#5thchat
Feed them everyday with encouraging words, give specific feedback to what makes them amazing and give them a pack of crackers if they’re hungry #teachSC#5thChat
Now that is something to remember! We both say almost the exact same thing to each other and the tweets show up on my Tweetdeck right next to each other. Go figure! #teachsc#5thChat
A3: we have many opportunities outside of the classroom that give students an opportunity to grow! Bike club, robotics, volunteerism, athletics, student ambassadors, and many more! #TeachSC#5thchat
A3- Like @mrdearybury I also teach adults, and at this point in the semester, we are in the heat of those two weeks before exams. They are stressed out <--understatement. Giving them encouragement is essential to their whole "self" right now #teachsc#5thchat
Whole child ED is crucial, especially with ACE scores of students so high. Be fully present. Care about them, honestly care. Listen, seriously, to them. Challenge them academically. Help them solve real world problems BC they will have a ton as they mature. #teachsc#5thChat
A3: Lots of conversations around growth mindset. I also let them see when I make mistakes and that I'm always learning. There are great mindset books that we read throughout the year to reinforce their change in thinking. #teachsc#5thchat
Try to avoid presenting my historical figures as saints. Look for funny or gross (it's middle school) connections that children can attach to. Encourage independent thoughts & divergent opinion, as long as it's not offensive. #teachsc#5thChat

Yes- for sure creds on all these questions goes to collaboration of caffeine at @LRRcoffeebar with my buddy @mrdearybury Stuff happens when we get together. This one was ALL HIM :) #teachsc#5thchat

Great question... My biggest pain point is enabling/scaffolding meaningful collaborative discussions and peer feedback in online learning spaces....but the tone/tenor of this conversation is making me think more about making learning more authentic & accessible #TeachSC#5thchat

A4: Can we please provide aspiring teachers who are sincere in their desire to teach and who have demonstrated capacity for this profession with college degrees with alternate forms of certification that do not include expensive and random Praxis exams #TeachSC#5thchat
A4- my help call would be for strategies to raise reading scores, differentiate, and enrich the learning experience for students all at the same time. #teachsc#5thChat
Such a good point- also fighting for this with conversations at the state level. @Ms_Toal are there more rumblings? I know this was brought up at SCATE. #teachsc#5thchat
A4: Hello Helpline! Is there a way to minimize the amount of meetings we have to attend, especially when information can be shared through email? #TeachSC#5thchat
A3: By promoting whole child practices, working to provide our state with our first @SCASCD Whole Child Conference, creating opportunities to engage teachers and students with school gardens, focusing on social emotional health and teacher wellness #teachSC#5thchat
A1: Of the tendency to point out problems without offering solutions. People aren’t problems, problems are. Let’s spend time promoting progress. #5thchat#teachSC#TeachtheChange
All the YES. Use of @Flipgrid@padlet, even @Twitter are public forums we need to employ so Ss are able to work in a collab space & can seek support in that space once they leave us. My Ss are required to be in 3 Twitter chats across the semester- they do more. #teachsc#5thchat
In reply to
@wiobyrne, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz, @Flipgrid, @padlet, @Twitter
What can I say to encourage parents not to forget about their middle schoolers? Ss come to me & parents suddenly disappear. Children need support in MS more than ever! #teachsc#5thChat
In reply to
@JuliePJones, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz
A2: We can choose to model that giving is more powerful than receiving...giving understanding, acceptance, intentional acts of kindness without expectation of a return to students, parents, and colleagues. #teachSC#5thchat
A1: Charging Laptops! It’s petty, I know, but the whole process is a pain. That’s all that I’m tired of. I have other things that could be better, but I’m not tired of those just yet. #5thchat#TeachSC
This is the easiest, yet most difficult thing about being a foreign language T. I want my Ss to make meaning of the language and not just rehearse phrases, but we have to start somewhere. I start rehearsed but then let Ss run off on their own! #teachSC#5thchat
In reply to
@JuliePJones, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz
Helpline response: tell them the story of @Uber and how we are preparing them for jobs that don't exist yet. Then explain the concept of the 4th industrial revolution. Mic drop. #teachsc#5thchat
Absolutely...need to build these critical digital, media literacies and practices...and students need to give educators the latitude to test, play, and iterate. #TeachSC#5thchat

@JuliePJones, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz, @Flipgrid, @padlet, @Twitter
A5: By providing them with compelling topics and texts, noticing and wonderings, and following up to their responses not with correction but with active listening and further inquiry. #teachSC#5thchat
My fav word here is PLAY- the room to take risks and grow. We seem to lose that in #higherED Let's lead the revolution to bring it back #teachsc#5thchat
In reply to
@wiobyrne, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz, @Flipgrid, @padlet, @Twitter
A5 - In my school getting Ss to talk is easy... on topic is another thing. I have found when you build a relationship with them, ask them real world questions, and give honest constructive feedback kiddos are more likely to participate and not just be compliant #teachsc#5thChat
A5: Being in K, they have A LOT to say ALL OF THE TIME! We have been fine tuning our turn and talks, with a mix of table chats before sharing our ideas to the whole group. Sometimes reading books about things they like or new ideas gets them going! #TeachSC#5thchat
tough one. Ss chatter beyond 1st week - not a problem. Keeping discussions going in a positive, growing, productive direction - Oh, My!!! #teachsc#5thChat
In reply to
@JuliePJones, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz
A6 - I love choice. Choice is essential. I give students choice on everything - summative, enrichment, formatives, etc. Too many ways to list! #teachSC#5thchat
It totally can be done if they find meaning in the content. Meaning from empathy... how do we put a human face on what we're teaching? #teachsc#5thchat
In reply to
@HistoryKimma, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz
Yeah that needs to change! Play can happen all day long. Unstructured play is all most people consider, but real PLAY takes so many forms. #teachsc#5thchat
In reply to
@TigerMolly11, @wiobyrne, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz, @Flipgrid, @padlet, @Twitter
A6: Choice in product but also choice in process. I am also learning about choice in creating different learning pathways. I am learning a lot this year about personalized learning through a cohort led by our state dept personalized learning dept. #teachSC#5thchat
A5: We use lots of notices and wonders, inquiry, and exploration of real world examples. Relationships are key! My kids are comfortable talking because we have established a collaborative culture where we are safe to talk. #teachsc#5thchat
A3: I high-five the band kids and advertise for the academic team. I look for the spaces where I can encourage their natural gifts. Sometimes that’s giving the fiction book with drums on the cover to the struggling reader who is a percussionist!
#5thchat#TeachSC
A6: Learning menus provide choice and they cater to all different learning styles and to each child’s unique gifts. I also love when my Ss select their flex seating choice for the day. #5thchat#teachSC
A5: Connecting what students have to learn with their interests & culture. Allow students to engage in interactive learning opportunities with their peers. #teachSC#5thchat
I’ll assign a conversation, but instead of everyone doing the same exact questions, I allow the students to choose their questions and their roles! Also I’m working on new choice activities for my early finishers! #teachSC#5thchat
In reply to
@JuliePJones, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz
A6: I let my kids choose which writing tools they'd like to use to complete seat work. I have a "free choice" center that is full of different materials that they can freely explore with their groups. Their play hasbecome more meaningful as the year goes on! #TeachSC#5thchat
A6- We talk about Makerspace and PBL as if it's a special area- like art, music, etc. Do you all feel that you've incorporated a maker- mindset? Does it permeate all you do? #teachsc#5thchat
Curious- asking for a friend :)
A4: Where is the coffee? Does Chick-Fil-A Deliver?
If a kid geninly needs individualized instruction, but hates the stigma of a resource class as a 7th grader, WHAT AM I TO DO???
I’m talking beyond Learning Contracts etc. This is a 10 second attention span #5thchat#TeachSC
A6: Flexible seating and different writing tools. Experimenting the choice in test format. Some of my kids really like open questions of tell me everything you know about ____. Other kids need a structured test. Still trying it out. We'll see what happens. #teachsc#5thchat
When teaching resource in middle school, I always stood at the door so I could see my Ss, but they could be "late" (friends didn't see them enter my room). They also left on the bell so no one saw them leave. Same instruction- saving face. #teachsc#5thchat
A7: Sleep! Spend time with family. Take time for me. Spend some much needed time with my hubby. Maybe a little lesson planning mixed in there, too! #icanthelpit#TeachSC#5thchat
A5: PHILOSOPHY FRIDAY! (This book is amazing! https://t.co/4uZqEAqq4H)
They LOVE to argue...with me. Granted, I poke the fire a bit, but they enjoy the push back/critical thinking. #5thChat#TeachSC
A7- I recharge every night with no screens. I put my girls to bed, turn off devices and read. Paper. Real books. I'm much more pleasant. I get more done. I feel like progress is happening. #teachsc#5thchat
A1. I’m tired of trying to be “everything” to some Ss because they are not getting everything they need. I’m not tired as much as I am sad about it. #teachsc#5thChat
A6: Allowing students to choose how they want to learn, how they want to convey their understanding, who they want to work with, where they want to learn, etc. #TeachSC#5thchat
Eating all the mashed potatoes so my parents have to break into the ones they hide!! Also, spending a spa day with my mom and my SIL (also a T) during the short break! #teachSC#5thchat
In reply to
@JuliePJones, @mrdearybury, @PaulSolarz
A7: I have to get go to the gym and recharge! Mental clarity, picking heavy things up, and putting them back down is a great way to get back to neutral :) #TeachSC#5thchat
A7: Two words... church basketball. For those of y’all who have played church ball before and have the scars and laughs to show for it you know it can offer way more than exercise. Elbows and Jump balls #5thchat#teachSC
That makes sense! I’m trying to figure out how, as his “Reg Ed” teacher, to get him the help he needs during the school day. He has potential, but even with pref. seating, and refocusing cues, we’re still not as productive as when I stand over his shoulder etc #5thchat#TeachSC
I don't forget about the wonderful resources you create! I am learning more from you on LinkedIn these days rather than Twitter. Great to see you here this evening. #teachsc#5thchat
I once took an elbow in the face from a teammate playing basketball. Got a big black eye. Told my Ss I’d gone looking for Sasquatch and found him. They fell for it (for 5 seconds 🙃) #teachSC#5thchat
Many Many thanks to @JuliePJones for moderating tonight's #TeachSC! Thanks to @PaulSolarz for letting us jump in to #5thchat too! What a great night of collaboration!
A3. I try to pretend that I’m in their shoes and ask myself......would my 8yo self enjoy/like whatever I’m doing, would I WANT to participate, how would it make me feel? I am 🤪 #TeachSC#5thChat
A8: Find your marigold. Someone who can instill positivity and possibility into your day when you need a little boost. Someone who will openly and effectively collaborate.#TeachSC#5thchat thcha
Thank you for joining us tonight for the special edition of #5thChat and #teachSC
Here's how you can continue the TURKEY TALK all week long...
@mrdearybury@PaulSolarz
A8- You don't have to be the sage on the stage anymore. They need you, but they also need to know their ideas matter. Empower your Ss to do more than the curriculum ever intended. #teachSC#5thchat
Thanks so much to everyone who participated in this evening's #5thchat and #TeachSC chat! Thanks especially to @JuliePJones for moderating!!
Please join #5thchat next TUESDAY at 7pm Central as @teachchoice moderates "Creating and Leading Change through Transparency."
Goodnight!
