For the final time in 2018, we say #dojochat starts NOW π Come join the conversation, RT to remind your friends, and let's get hyped about making 2019 our best yet! Take it away @MrsFoxs5thgrade π
Hello everyone! Make sure you introduce yourself. I am so excited you are here to talk all about positive mindsets! Make sure you use #dojochat during our chat tonight.
A positive mindset involves being willing to give something a go -- even if it seems complex or out of reach - a willingness to try new things, and to continue trying even after "failure" #dojochat
Slow internet because of all the snow, but I'm here! Hi everyone, Caitlin a former elementary teacher living the dream with ClassDojo now! Excited about this #dojochat π
A1: Having an open mind, unafraid to take a risk even if that means making mistakes. Making mistakes and learning from them, seeing that it's all about trying and growth! #dojochat
A2: posters, daily affirmations, modeling, our class promise. Everything we do incorporated a positive mindset in one way or another because we're all learning and trying new and difficult things #dojochat
A2 Ss are encouraged to make mistake, "get dirty" and try new things. Creating a safe environment allowing for out of the box thinking is important. #dojochat
Hi everyone! I'm Noa from Israel. I work at the Technological Innovation Unit in the Israeli Ministry of Education. It's been a long while since my last #dojochat
A2 I try to keep introducing new things -- and one thing that has really helped is for me to try new things in front of my students -- they see me try and sometimes "fail" and it makes them more willing to give it a go! #mojowontquit#dojochat
Or when they can teach you! My students loved being the first to know something, or being able to bring me music, or teach me how to do origami, those are special moments β€οΈ #dojochat
A1: I can't think of any difference between "positive mindset" in class or out of it. Maybe something here is lost in translation from English to Hebrew .#dojochat
A2 Also, promoting a positive mindset also involves listening. I try not to shut a student down when they've got an alternative solution. #maybeitcouldwork#dojochat
A3 Check out Carol Dwek, you can find some great Ted Talks to first get yourself educated, the cool thing is you'll not only see this as applicable to your students, but to yourself as well #dojochat
A2: I think it's a bit similar to growth mindset. I give formative assessment, helping Ss realize that they can fail as many times as they need, and not be scared. It's an essencial step towards truly learning from failure. #dojochat
A3 and for the record, I can be as sarcastic as all get out, but it doesn't work in the classroom, and the longer I live, the more I see -- it doesn't really work in life #flowersneedlovetobloom#dojochat
A2 - I go out of my way to make sure each teammate KNOWS that they are valued as people not just students. Personal individual secret handshakes, nicknames, attend outside events, etc. #dojochat

A4: (Sit back, and get comfy because we been doing amazing stuff) I convinced a kid to read a book. TRUE STORY. My reading class has improved from 27$ average to 80% on their latest assessment. I stepped away from the free donuts in the staff room TWICE. #dojochat

A#2-#dojochat - I use read aloud directly related to growth mindset. Students practice using their new vocabulary which includes βperseverance & not yet!β
A4: And if you want 22 minutes of entertainment you can watch this documentary about my classroom -- also you can spot MOJO -- he makes a cameo

A4 - That βtroublesomeβ kid that no teachers wanted and was put in your room for a strong male role model becomes a ROCKSTAR member of your classroom!! #dojochat
My students have filled a whole bullentin board with positive statements! Every morning they write one positive statement. Our classroom is way more positive because of this! #dojochat
A4 - That βtroublesomeβ kid that no teachers wanted and was put in your room for a strong male role model becomes a ROCKSTAR member of your classroom!! #dojochat
A4 Also, a kid who was a known bully, has attached himself to one of our differently-abled students, and sees himself as his protector and defender. He's got no time to bully now. #dojochat
A5: Don't participate in negative talk -- don't say thinks like, "I'm not a math person" or "That's not my thing" . BE OPEN And show your work -- don't hide it and don't hide your mistakes either. BE THEIR CHAMPION and BE YOUR OWN CHAMPION TOO #dojochat
A5-I model the respectful way to correct others. When I make a mistake, students know how to appropriately let me and others know that they have spotted the problem. Being helpful, not disrespectful is the key! #dojochat
I saw him step in ONE TIME to support the other student and then awarded him our very rare Empathy Badge (my class is gamified) -- It completely shifted his own definition of himself #dojochat
A6 -- YOU CAN'T LEARN IF YOU ARE PROTECTING YOURSELF. If you fear ridicule or teasing, you spend all your energy protecting yourself, and nothing gets in! Building a positive community where mistakes aren't just okay, but necessary is the only way LEARNING will happen #dojochat
Some really good questions in #dojochat tonight, a lot to share and learn π Since there is no chat next week, we're inviting everyone to keep on answering these questions over the next week π We'd love to read and retweet your answers! #dojochat
A6- Ss don't reach their full potential if they are fearful of failure. Having that positive mindset makes failure a part of the process of learning. #dojochat
Dear @ClassDojo
We all adore you, and hope that you are celebrating your little Mojo-heart out. 2018 was pretty good because of you. Thanks for all you do. Keep up the good work, and remember all the sweet, smiling up-turned faces that you encourage every day. #dojochat

I want to mention good natured teasing. There has been some negative comments about this but in my room it has built a strong team and has added lots of fun. Obviously it isnβt hurtful or mean and it is critical you know your kiddos well enough to know who can handle it #dojochat
A7 That ONE kid... you know him. Anytime he admitted defeat and smiled, giggled, or allowed himself to have a moment of vulnerability. Those moments melted my heart β€οΈ #dojochat
A7 but honestly the instances of a positive mindset positively affecting my students is innumerable. Once they realized that there isn't A+ or Fail, that they are always growing and learning, and mistakes are just stepping stones, they are capable of ANYTHING! #dojochat
Thank you @MrsFoxs5thgrade for a #dojochat full of positivity π We'll chat next in 2019, until then, enjoy some time off to recharge for the new year π
