Welcome to the #ISTE#ETCoaches Chat for January 2018! I am Robin Pence, EdTech Coach at the Adelson Educational Campus in Las Vegas, NV (otherwise known as @rpencetech). I am so excited to be your host today!
Today’s Chat is New Year, New You, New Mindset: Helping others work towards a Growth Mindset with the ISTE Standards! Remember to add the hashtag #ETCoaches as you chat with us today!
Please introduce yourself and let us know where you are joining us from, and something you are looking forward to during 2018. Q1 will be posted soon. #ETCoaches
A8: Keeping the focus on the content is the main goal. Also, SAMR gives Ts a framework for how to move beyond putting a worksheet on the computer. #ETCoaches
Since I already introduced myself, I'll share something I am looking forward to this year is an exciting ISTE 2018 Conference - and presenting there!
#ETCoaches
Steve Wick - Science Teacher and Technology Coordinator in Naperville, IL. I am looking forward to growing as a learner & educator whenever and wherever I can! #ETCoaches
#ETCoaches - Melissa from PA. I am an online ETCoach. My big "theme" for 2018 is slow down. So I guess I am looking forward to more time doing the simple things: playing games, baking cookies, reading, etc.. Oh and a cruise in March - and of course ISTE 2018 :)
A2: We like to dabble here and there. Right now my two favorite topics we are modeling in our PD is formative assessment and HyperDocs. #ETCoaches#ETCoaches
A5: Ss are actively learning when they talk about what they are doing, asking questions, and get creative how they sho what they know A6: Co-use is when ss work together on the same project.Students have conversations about how complete the project and can share ideas. #ETCoaches
A1: I created an in-house badging system for my teachers. They can earn them at their own time & pace and they have choice! https://t.co/Ghjlf9HGKU#ETCoaches
At my school, I have been working with educators both 1:1 and by putting together some special events like this one in the picture I posted. Educators were able to select between different sessions - 3D design (pictured here), App Design, and Digital Media Design. #ETCoaches
Q2: What are some activities that you have had educators participate in to help them understand how to participate responsibly in the digital world? #ETCoaches
A2: We had our teachers participate in a Twitter Chat but we really didn't focus on how to participate responsibly. I would love to hear how others have done this! #ETCoaches
#ETCoaches A2: When I model digital, co-use activities, I model class conversations around digital citizenship.
Strictly for teachers?? I still have some thinking/growing to do around that.
Q2: What are some activities that you have had educators participate in to help them understand how to participate responsibly in the digital world? #ETCoaches
A2: We model our favorite communication tools during our PD Sessions. Having educators post & respond is a great way to open the door to thinking about digital literacy. https://t.co/bHrBTCy1cg#ETCoaches
#ETCoaches A2: I also spend a lot of time talking to teachers about my Intercom Rule: "If you wouldn't say it on the school intercom on Grandparents Day, don't post it on social media. EVERY audience I speak to about social media hears that message.
A2: Great resources through @CommonSenseMedia, @seesaw, @GoogleEDU & our LMS. I've created Seesaw PD groups/LMS Groups to give Ts an opportunity to experience 1st hand what it is like to participate in online discussions & manage their own communication practices. #ETCoaches
A2: We have also hosted some sessions connected to the ISTE Standards for Teachers as a conversation starter. The Citizen and Collaborator Standards connect well to this question. https://t.co/5fxNUntD8f#etcoaches
Q3: What are some ways that you encourage/help educators you work with to collaborate with colleagues/students to improve their practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems? What needs to be in place for this to be effective? #ETCoaches
#ETCoaches A2: On my way to work this morning, I was listening to the "10 Minute Teacher" podcast. Today's episode was all about digital citizenship and how to make #digcit instruction active learning. It was a good listen! https://t.co/QuiBeNzQc2 cc @coolcatteacher
A3: Give Ts the opportunity to do so! Use @BreakoutEDU sessions to get them started collaborating, sharing, & problem solving naturally together. Then have them create their own!
#ETCoaches
From all that I've researched, positive impact is seen most at the early elementary level. We're still grappling with the details and logistics. #ETCoaches
A3: Few things are more powerful than face to face conversations. Lunch and Learns, Target Teams, Future Ready Teams, PLCs, and EdCamps are a few of the things we do to facilitate these conversations. #etcoaches
A3: I find the more we give educators the time & encouragement they will take advantage to ideate & create! Which makes me think of another resource - Design Thinking for Educators! Be sure to check out IDEO: https://t.co/uQF20uMaAN
& https://t.co/1i3DgBNuP2#ETCoaches
My math coach and I created a 12 day Twitter challenge. Each day we had a challenge for them to share what they do in their classrooms, share how they grow their PLN, etc.. We have great success! We also encourage our staff to attend Edcamps! #ETCoaches
A3: Another awesome resource developed by a collaboration between Apple Distinguished Educators from around the world is The Joy of Professional Learning Series https://t.co/bLpXipDtzb
If you haven't found this yet, be sure to check it out! @joyofpl#ETCoaches
A3: we set 9 day, 9 week and 9 month goals which then become the basis for my face-to-face conversations with Ts and form the basis for my work and our collaboration and PD #ETCoaches
#ETCoaches A3:
1. Model what digital collaboration looks like
2. Provide face to face and digital structures (PLC meetings, workshops, G-Classroom discussion boards, etc) to help facilitate collaboration
3. Follow-up with teachers and offer guidance as needed
Q3: What are some ways that you encourage/help educators you work with to collaborate with colleagues/students to improve their practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems? What needs to be in place for this to be effective? #ETCoaches
Q4: Do you have educators facilitate Professional Learning/Professional Development sessions? If yes, how do you guide them through the process? If not, how would you guide them through the process? #ETCoaches
a4: yes, we put out a form asking Ts what they want to learn (with suggestions) then ask other Ts if they can teach certain sections. we've done all-district trainings and small group sessions this way. after school PD too. #ETCoaches
A4: The ASCD article at https://t.co/dKWEqYN90A discusses ways to get Ts to engage other Ts. We have regular PLC meetings & time set aside during staff meetings for Ts to lead Ts. #ETCoaches
A4: We definitely utilize a Train the Train approach and use Classroom teachers and EdTech Specialists as our trainers. We have PD for them so that they are prepared with the content and let them utilize their Teacher Leader skills! #ETCoaches
Q4: Do you have educators facilitate Professional Learning/Professional Development sessions? If yes, how do you guide them through the process? If not, how would you guide them through the process? #ETCoaches
A4: sidenote - this looks like a great, free tool to host an event https://t.co/sXVOP8onmt combine it with Google Forms to get initial interest and off you go #ETCoaches
Our teachers have the opportunity to host Herd Hours, in-house PD that is provided after school. If they earn 6 Herd Hours they get the Friday before Memorial Day off! Teachers who host Herd Hours get 2 hours, that's our incentive. #ETCoaches
A4. I'm teaming with teacher leaders to offer evening webinars for our staff. I co-plan with them; structure must include certain elements such as interactive learning activities. #ETCoaches
#ETCoaches A4: Since my district is so big and there's only 1 of me, having Ts facilitate learning is a must. After attending a conf/workshop, Ts focus on implementing 1 new practice, workshop it, then share their practice & results during PD
Q4: Do you have educators facilitate Professional Learning/Professional Development sessions? If yes, how do you guide them through the process? If not, how would you guide them through the process? #ETCoaches
A4: Ts all have great things to share, & we can learn so much from one another if given the opportunity. We also have been looking into the ways that we can better share resources electronically through our existing tools of GSuite, LMS, and Apple products. #ETCoaches
A4: We have done EdCamps in the past that are teacher-led. This year we are working with our Future of Learning Teacher Group to plan for sessions on a SIP day. Just getting started with this. #etcoaches
A4: When we work with teachers teaching teachers our biggest focus is helping them model learner-centered classrooms. The goal is not to show them, but instead engage them in the learning enhanced by tech. #etcoaches
Q5: How do you foster a culture where educators take ownership of their learning goals & outcomes both with individual & group settings? And…how do you help them then transfer this to the classroom setting for students to take ownership? #ETCoaches
15 minutes left of our chat!
#ETCoaches - A4. Yes, many of our PD in your PJs sessions include teacher-lead segments. We usually have a main "host" that transitions between the activities and other moderators.
A5: goal setting, face to face collaboration, reflection, resetting goals - use #flipgrid to verbalize them; works the same with Ss - build the relationship and use that capital to grow #ETCoaches
A5: This can be challenging, but encourages Ts to set goals, to look at different resources that match their learning styles, & take time to reflect on their practice. I help them connect this to Independent Performance Tasks that they can do with their Ss.
#ETCoaches
A5: I have also had Ts complete SWOT Analyses to help them identify where they want to focus their energies. These can work well in the classroom for Ss project work as well. I adapted questions from the following site: https://t.co/Xr6xDgAomn#ETCoaches
A9 “Technology tools should add value, such as supports (scaffolds), to enhance students’ learning experience in ways that could not easily be done without those tools.” #ETCoaches
Excerpt From: Liz Kolb. “Learning First, Technology Second.” iBooks.
#ETCoaches slow chat: Started a book group before school with free breakfast paid for by principals. Currently reading Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain. New starts!
Q5: Definitely a challenge sometimes. Our best advice is to place yourself in the role of the student. What works in your classroom? How do you learn best when you are on the student end? How can you model this when you are teaching the teachers? #etcoaches
#ETCoaches A5: After Ts attends PD with me, they fill out a PD follow-up form to share what went well, what action they plan 2 take & by when, and what concerns that have. After the action date, the T gets another email to see how it went.
Q5: How do you foster a culture where educators take ownership of their learning goals & outcomes both with individual & group settings? And…how do you help them then transfer this to the classroom setting for students to take ownership? #ETCoaches
15 minutes left of our chat!
A6: There are numerous ways that I have gotten educators reflecting using technology - great tools for this purpose that I have used with educators: @Seesaw, @Flipgrid, @Tumblr or other Blogging sites, @LinkedIN, or apps like @SlackHQ and @Voxer. #ETCoaches
Q5: This is a challenge for me as well. We have started a Learning Library for our teachers, we are encouraging our teachers to see who else has checked out the same book so that they can have a discussion about it. #ETCoaches
A6: Some have also felt comfortable enough to use Google Calendar, Google Sites, or for a more private approach Notes on Mac (could also do with Evernote or other types of tools in the cloud as well). #ETCoaches
A6: Great article from @edutopia on blogging with Ss, can apply to Ts too - https://t.co/DVbyI3faVv
I also got involved in the ISTE EdTech Blogging Buddies group since I needed a little help myself to start blogging. Find this resource here: https://t.co/V4CvPlnlki#ETCoaches
