Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
Hello, my name is Mikayla Smith and I am a pre-service teacher studying secondary social studies education at Indiana University. I am so excited to be participating tonight! #21stedchat
Next year we have adopted the Next Generation Science Standards, so I will be looking into finding resources to help me teach Earth and Space Sciences. #21stedchat
A1: I have 2--one is to use our technology more, the other is to make sure that they understand why they need to learn the content. #21stedchat#READ5305
A1: I just finished my first year of college, and will begin education classes this fall. My goals are to study more effectively, plan way ahead and better, and to develop relationships with students in my area by tutoring and substituting in my free time. #21stedchat
I want to better engage struggling students by employing texts that match their interests. I also want to push my high achievers to create more and spend more time thinking critically. Plus I want to use more games like @classcraftgame#READ5305#21stedchat
A1: My goal is to make writing relevant outside of the classroom. I'm looking for writing and publishing opportunities outside of the classroom to incorporate into the class. #21stedchat
A1 I have set several goals, have 3 parents days in after only two last year. Work on curiosity with the student more as we get into genius hour. #21stedchat
A1: My goals for next year include staying organized, continuing to build my PLN here on Twitter and not taking on too many things at one time. #21stedchat
A1: Integrating more critical thinking & creativity tech tools into my lessons, that will support all learners. Offering more digital citizenship PD to my colleagues that will support student online engagement in the classroom.
A1. As a student, my goals is to learn as much as I can about being a teacher. This will be my first year in the program so I wish to grow my PLN and grow under a mentor #21stedchat
A1: working toward pursuing excellent in every part of our organization. Also striving to give more positive affirmation & to continue to build our community/brand. #21stedchat
Just joining and have never done this before, so please bare with me. I my name is Kerry, I live in OH and I am currently going to Kent State For a Master’s degree in Special Education.
#21stedchat
It's great that students drive your instruction! I wonder what takeaways you have from last year or what new ideas you might have learned about that would help improve your craft. #READ5305

Welcome Susan! I hope you enjoy Twitter - there sure is a lot to learn from everyone here! Here are some hashtags - maybe one of them will be right up your alley? #21stedchat
Q2: I am going to read and sit by the pool while my daughter swims. Maybe I'll swim too. Not much rest this summer though, as I will be teaching summer school until the 13th and then moving.
#READ5305#21stedchat
A2: I'm glad this came up in this chat because this is one thing I have not allowed myself so far this summer with work and classes. After my summer classes are over I plan to relax by catching up on some reading and watching documentaries. #21stedchat
Q2: I'm resting (having almost nothing to do with school) for 3 weeks in July. I'm very excited to have 20 consecutive days with nothing scheduled. #21stedchat
A2: Tiling, installing trim and moulding, cleaning the garage? And whatever else my honey do list may involve. But home to take a trip someplace. We are prepping our house to sell. #downsizing#21stedchat
A2: I currently have one more week of summer camp left for middle-schoolers at West Hills College, Lemoore. Looking to have a relaxing July with my boys and husband with many beach trips! #21stedchat
A2: I spent the first 2 weeks of summer in Italy (didn't exactly relax--too much to see). Going to spend time with family and travel to some National Parks with my kiddos, husband and mom. #21stedchat#READ5305
A2: I am reading a lot of books for fun and sitting by/in the pool! I am also trying to be intentional about spending time with friends and family to refresh for next year. #21stedchat#READ5305
Books? Here are all of the books from the authors who have joined #BookCampPD so far. If you click on the book there are plenty of resources. Maybe some of them are in your "to read" pile? https://t.co/9CFlAawfNY#21stedchat

A2- We love to vacation. That’s how I relax. So far we went to the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Las Vegas, heading to Miami in July. I love building the memories with my kids.
#21stedchat
Thanks Judy :) I don't want to be caught completely by surprise as the summer winds down but I also know I will not have this kind of flexibility again for another year...might as well take advantage of it!! #21stedchat
A2. Relaxation for me always include a day at the beach or a pool. Luckily, there are some incredible movies out this summer too! Spending time with my family, especially my nieces and nephew brings great relaxation to me #21stedchat#EDU3161
Shiloh National Military Park, Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Mammoth Caves National Park, and Hot Springs National Park...my kids like to become Junior Rangers with @NatlParkService#21stedchat#READ5305
#21stedchat. #Read5305
A2: my relaxation is spending time with family and friends. Running with my sister. And lifting weights. Swimming in the pool or going to the lake. Love summer.
A3: I would have been less shy about using new and different technology. My fear was that I wouldn't know it well enough and that my Ss would lose respect for me...slowed my growth down a lot. #21stedchat
A3: Tough one! I would do more read-alouds if I could redo anything from the last year! I regularly read from a chapter book, but I wish I had incorporated more picture book read-alouds. #21stedchat#READ5305
A3: Not give up towards the end of the year as my students did. The last month of school was difficult and the kids wouldn't work at all, so I made them read and take notes...bad teacher here. #21stedchat
A3: I invited veterans to school for students to interview in order to create a narrative nonfiction based on a veteran's story. I feel like Ss needed more prep to "get a story." I also want to work on a way to share the products beyond the classrom. #21stedchat#READ5305
A3: I would definitely focus on time management. Balancing work and family is never easy. I am also working on making time for me and my husband and not feeling bad about it. #21stedchat
A3: I would use more technology in my class and use our journals more often to keep track of our learning. These are 2 of my priorities for next year in my classroom! #21stedchat#READ5305
A3: I would have continued to work hard in my science classes that I no longer needed due to changing my major in February by studying and going to office hours and trying to find something interesting in both to keep me going. #21stedchat
I would have taken more difficult subbing positions outside of my comfort zone to expand my learning. I would have also made sure my students had a strong grasp on material rather than trying to complete everything on the lesson plans that the teacher left.
#21stedchat
Many years ago, a grant I wrote funded an after school program. One of the activities was to create oral histories from the elders from the local tribe as many of them were passing away - and their stories with them. I still have the DVD we created. #21stedchat
A3: I would differentiate more for my students who were so very far behind. It's great having a rigorous classroom, but I never want to feel like I didn't provide for a student's needs again #21stedchat

I ran one my last couple of years teaching HS English. The kids chose what books we read and then we got together and had snacks and discussed the book. It was great fun! I like to do them like Literature Circles in my classroom too.
#READ5305#21stedchat
I like your goals. Love technology..such a motivator and you'll be teaching the new literacies. And I love journaling. Sounds great! #21stedchat. #Read5305

Yes, I taught HS English for 10 years; this will be my fourth year in elem. I mentioned it to some students and they ran with the idea. We ran 15-20 students for our book discussions. I miss my teenagers!

Our #cmspdl educators do a weekly podcast by teachers for teachers each week during the school year, you can find them on our new site here: https://t.co/9hEIaqM1Ln#21stedchat
A4: My vacation will help me get energized. However, I'm teaching only one subject next year and I'm excited about it, so that helps a lot.
#21stedchat
What technology did you implement last year and how? I am always looking for more ideas in technology! I am hoping to use Google Classroom next year... #21stedchat#READ5305
A4: By listening to my body when it needs rest, by exercising more, and by being more disciplined about my own personal PD and spiritual reading. Too easy to fall into the workaholic trap! #21stedchat
A4: Try to not be doing prep work the whole summer. Why was I up until 2 last night making math scoots? Have to remember that the more rested I am, the better I will be next year. They need that more than a math activity! #21stedchat
Hoping to get my house uncluttered before the start of school, finish summer classes so I can spend more quality time with my children and start eating healthier and exercising more.
#21stedchat
A4. Take time to reflect and hopefully come up with new, original, creative ideas to switch up #BookCampPD so educators don't grow weary of the "same old, same old" week after week. #21stedchat
A4: I will renew and reenergize myself this year by “detoxing” over the summer and letting go of bad experiences from last year. I’ll surround myself with positive, uplifting teachers. #21stedchat#READ5305
A4: I am going to take time for myself and my family. I have been so busy with teaching and going to grad school that my family has suffered. It is time to just be together with no distractions!! #21stedchat#READ5305
Q4. I always feel renewed when I travel to Pennsylvania to visit my bestfriend. It’s always a week where I can relax and not have to worry about a thing #EDU3161#21stedchat
A4: I will reenergize myself for this year by taking more time for myself. I want to start exercising more, reading my bible more, and reading more books by inspirational authors. #21stedchat
A4: Just taking July to rejuvenate and recenter will be amazing! I plan to just be a mom for a month and not worry about my teacher side until August 1st. Wish me luck! Haha #21stedchat
A4: Aside from renewal from summer, I am planning to collaborate more with other teachers in my building so that I have a continuous energy next school year! I have realized I can't teach alone and I need to start collaborating more. #21stedchat#READ5305
A4: I set goals to study or attend PD in order to learn something better or something new. I want to improve Projects-based Learning in my classroom. #PBL#READ5305#21stedchat
A4: One thing this week. My 4 yo grandson and I will be taking a vintage train ride on Wednesday. #21stedchat Maybe go look at some heavy equipment too.
A4: I'm going to move, leaving behind the stress of this last year. I'm going to create a budget and start planning some fun things for the future.
#READ5305#21stedchat
A5: I wish I had books on my reading list. This summer I am finishing up my Masters, so I am busy creating a portfolio and working on another class on social networking. #21stedchat
It's so important to connect eith positivity! Negative Nancies only bring people down. In such a demanding occupation like teaching, we don't have time for that! #21stedchat#read5305
A5: Hidden Gems by Katherine Bomer. Bought this as a suggestion from a graduate class. Excited to read it this summer for teacher growth. For fun I’m reading The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware. Love her books! #READ5305#21stedchat
A5: I wareading "The Reason For My Hope" by Billy Graham, but had to stop due to other readings for a research paper, so I'd like to pick back up on that one. One book I saw in my local library that I would like to read this summer is "The Murder of Adolf Hitler" #21stedchat
A5 Educational: The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google and Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls for personal. I read about a book a week so I know there will be others from my @goodreads list #21stedchat
Don’t have anything in particular, but seeing that I seem to be chatting with some seasoned teachers, can you recommend a good educational book as I continue with my masters?
#21stedchat
A5: I am reading The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon for school, in addition to my grad school textbooks. For fun, I have read three series so far and I am currently rereading The Chronicles of Narnia! #21stedchat#READ5305
How will you maintain that goal throughout the school year to prevent exhaustion (or even...burn out)? You're right about a rested teacher is a better teacher! #21stedchat#read5305
A5: Right now I am reading Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov (PD) and Fever of the Bone by Val McDermind (pleasure). But a lot more on the shelf, including a book study on Kasey Bell's Shake It Up this summer! #21stedchat
A5. No books on my summer reading lists except for my textbooks. Luckily I have a literature class this summer, so I’ll be reading Antigone and Annie John amongst some other plays and stories #EDU3161#21stedchat
@Edu_Thompson we are completing our 6th year of #21stedchat in August I think. Wow! We met a lot of great people (even @nathan_stevens ) along the way. Lots of good conversations. AND BTW Jill and I have never met in person and only once on a GHO.
A5: The Cafe Book to hopefully make my Daily 5 run smoother next year. My friend says that I NEED to read the Flavia De Luce series, so I guess that #21stedchat
A5: The Cafe Book and Daily 5 book to prep for my upcoming conference with “The Sisters” and for fun I am going to read Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls #21stedchat
A5: Professionally, one for me to read is "The Book Whisperer" by Donalyn Miller. Personally, I'm currently reading "Crooked Kingdom" by Leigh Bardugo. My "to read" list is too long! #READ5305#21stedchat
From Striving to Thriving for school (about helping struggling readers). And the new @sabaatahir book called A Reaper at the Gates (it's the third book in the Ember Quartet series)
#READ5305#21stedchat
I really like it. There are some books on there that I read many years ago and some that I really want to read. It's a great list of books. #21stedchat
A6: I need to refine by goals for the upcoming year. SO much I want to do but also knowing that I can't possibly do it all in any one school year! #21stedchat
A6: It’s 100% okay for teachers to rest and recharge! We’re better because of it. Take the time you need this summer and get back at it in the fall even better than before! #21stedchat
A6: this was my first twitter chat, and I loved hearing from other's experiences in education. I am definitely looking forward to the next chat as well as keeping in mind ideas from other's past experiences to implement into my future classroom. #21stedchat
A6: Teachers struggle to turn their work brains off, but we all now that it's important. It's nice to be reminded that it is a good thing for me to take these weeks to rest and recover #21stedchat
A6: Teachers need the summer to recharge not only our bodies but our minds as well to be ready to give our all next year. And it's okay to disconnect from our jobs for some time for ourselves!! #21stedchat#READ5305
#21stedchat will be off next Sunday. But join us Sun July 8 as we have open mic night. You get to ask the questions. Join @Edu_Thompson and I Sun July 8 at 8 PM ET US.
A6: Take care of yourself as a teacher. Students need and deserve you at your best. If you do this as a teacher, you’ll be better for your family as well. #READ5305#21stedchat
Q6- I made it through my first tweet chat. TweetChats have many smart people to collaborate with and valuable tools they can share. Also got some ideas for books. Enjoyed hearing teachers thoughts on their classes, their list to improve on and more.
#21stedchat
A6: It's definitely hard for teachers to stay in a state of rest! It's important to surround yourself with positive and caring teachers who will help remind you to take care of yourself. #READ5305#21stedchat
