Hello, Tom Ashley, Tech Coach TOSA @PalomaValley. Fav joke is a fable: The Scorpion, riding on back of frog across the lake, stings the Frog. Frog says: "Why would you do that, now we are both going to die." The Scorpion replied "I can't help it, I'm a Scorpion." #IEedchat

  • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:35 PM EST
Q1: Is there a specific routine you intentionally do to learn more about your students in order to promote better classroom culture? #IEedchat
  • Chrisjlara24 Feb 26 @ 10:35 PM EST
A0: Chris Lara 8th grade. Can’t really think of a pg-ish joke at the moment so I’ll leave this gif from a hilarious movie #IEedchat
  • jswilliams Feb 26 @ 10:36 PM EST
A1: At the start of the year, the students write about what makes them interesting. I learn a lot about them. #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:36 PM EST
A1: Mondays I always ask about what everyone did over the weekend and I try to remember little bits about each Ss, They are amazed 3 months later when I make a comment about what they mentioned #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 Feb 26 @ 10:36 PM EST
A1: First day of class I always handed out an "About Me" sheet that had several questions for students to answer about themselves and their interests. Gave me a good writing sample as well as what they were in to #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Feb 26 @ 10:37 PM EST
A1: Yes, thanks to my colleague, @MrBriggsclass, I use detailed and fun index cards that students fill out that become my equity cards for calling ons Ss. I share out an interesting fact about each student that they would have never learned of otherwise. #IEedchat
  • Chad_Shaner Feb 26 @ 10:37 PM EST
Chad Special Ed Coordinator checking in #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:37 PM EST
I always do that, it works out so well. #IEedchat
    In reply to @AshleyMSJC5, @MrBriggsclass
  • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:38 PM EST
Q2: How can you take time to have moments of levity with students and/or staff? #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee_Edu Feb 26 @ 10:38 PM EST
A1: Same as @JSynnott1 & @rguztec, an 'About Me' at the beginning of the year & asking about weekends, give opportunities to share about themselves. #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:35 PM EST
Q1: Is there a specific routine you intentionally do to learn more about your students in order to promote better classroom culture? #IEedchat
  • MathButler Feb 26 @ 10:38 PM EST
A1: I haven't done this myself - but ELA Teacher at my site has students fill out a Google Form survey first thing in the year; uses the trends to help shape tasks throughout the year. Keepin it 💯 #IEedchat
  • Chrisjlara24 Feb 26 @ 10:38 PM EST
A1: on the warm up every Monday I ask how their weekend was and every Friday I ask what their favorite thing from the week was also every day I ask how they are and if there is anything they’d like to tell me #IEedchat
  • judykaylane Feb 26 @ 10:38 PM EST
A1: this isn't funny necessarily...but can be...I greet at the door when possible and talk to them #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:35 PM EST
Q1: Is there a specific routine you intentionally do to learn more about your students in order to promote better classroom culture? #IEedchat
  • jswilliams Feb 26 @ 10:39 PM EST
A2: Honestly, the best thing for me is to have students share short video clips of things that make them laugh. Remember Vine? There is a method to compelling and funny Vines. #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 Feb 26 @ 10:39 PM EST
A2: Students are hilarious. Be willing to listen to what they are talking about with each other and you'll find they are comedians. They love it when you laugh with them. #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:39 PM EST
A2:There are moments in a class when you get a feeling that you just have to learn about them and not the content your teaching. It allows the Ss the ability to view you as a regular person and not just a Teacher #IEedchat
  • Chad_Shaner Feb 26 @ 10:40 PM EST
A2: always take the time to have conversations. Levity will find itself naturally #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 Feb 26 @ 10:40 PM EST
Agreed. So key; they need to see us as people and not teaching machines. #IEedchat
    In reply to @rguztec
  • MathButler Feb 26 @ 10:40 PM EST
A2: Raise your awareness. Wise neighbor teacher reminded me that kids in school still need to do some kidding. Don't fight the momentum of a laugh. Just make sure the subject of laughter isn't with harmful intent. #IEedchat
  • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:41 PM EST
    Q3 in 1 minute #IEedchat
  • judykaylane Feb 26 @ 10:41 PM EST
A2:how can you not? duh duh duh duh...the seventh inning stretch #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee_Edu Feb 26 @ 10:41 PM EST
A2: I had this posted in my room, "Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive." https://t.co/6bXZhPoaLe via @BrainyQuote #IEedchat
  • MathButler Feb 26 @ 10:41 PM EST
Very much agreed. Ss often ask, "Why do you teach?" "Y'all are entertainment. And it's like a new episode each period." Gotta learn to enjoy it. #IEedchat
    • JSynnott1 Feb 26 @ 10:39 PM EST
A2: Students are hilarious. Be willing to listen to what they are talking about with each other and you'll find they are comedians. They love it when you laugh with them. #IEedchat
  • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:42 PM EST
Q3: How can you appreciate those students more who seem to bring silliness into the classroom? #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Feb 26 @ 10:42 PM EST
A2: I use humor to bridge differences between me & my co-workers & students. W/students, I do "dad jokes" and make fun of how much older I am than they are. With co-workers, I'll make light of political differences to be able to show that we can all come together. #IEedchat
  • Chrisjlara24 Feb 26 @ 10:42 PM EST
A2: laugh with them. They say such funny things. I think they’ve made me laugh till I had tears in my eyes about 4 Times now this year #IEedchat
  • jswilliams Feb 26 @ 10:43 PM EST
A3: Students being silly can lessen student anxiety and bring down their shields. Try to embrace and focus the silliness. Maybe model things like play on words etc. #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:43 PM EST
They never dissapoint and you never know what it's going to be like #IEedchat
    In reply to @MathButler
  • JSynnott1 Feb 26 @ 10:44 PM EST
A3: Laugh at their jokes and antics (because you know you want to anyways); also, tell them they are funny - they don't often hear this #IEedchat
  • MathButler Feb 26 @ 10:44 PM EST
A3: /IF/ it is disruptive. Give the S(s) some kind of responsibility. Pass out/collect paper, scribe, echo another's response. IF NOT disruptive, mind your reaction. Show how to be comfortable with a little silly. Appropriate silly -> divergent thinking 👍 #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:44 PM EST
A3: I always enjoyed a good joke and a good time, the good vibes from a silly kid allow people to relax which in turn allows your class to be more enjoyable. #IEedchat
  • judykaylane Feb 26 @ 10:44 PM EST
A2: I might be taking this w/too much levity, but again, how can you not? I love my silly Ss ; love to be reminded not to take myself so serious #IEedchat
  • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:45 PM EST
Q4: What are some things other teachers have done to make things worst in situations that could of been handled very easily? #IEedchat
  • Chrisjlara24 Feb 26 @ 10:45 PM EST
A3: utilize their humor. I have one student who is awesome at making hilarious dank memes and using photoshop to make visuals pun memes for historical figures we are learning #IEedchat
  • Chad_Shaner Feb 26 @ 10:45 PM EST
A3: I acknowledge the humor as long as it’s appropriate and try to work it into the lesson #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Feb 26 @ 10:45 PM EST
A3: As a teacher, you have to control the silliness of fun/wacky students by reducing the acceptable opportunities for it by having a purpose-filled classroom. They'll learn to shift gears and crack jokes as they learn, and you teach them, proper comedic timing. #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee_Edu Feb 26 @ 10:45 PM EST
A3: I'd tell those students thank you, I needed a good laugh. It lightens the mood and brings happiness to the class. #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:45 PM EST
You should keep a record of those memes, you never know when you can use them. #IEedchat
    In reply to @Chrisjlara24
  • jswilliams Feb 26 @ 10:46 PM EST
A4: I saw a kid in discipline who was up there for "threatening" someone. When I asked for specifics I found out that he was doing a meme. "Come at me bro." Know your memes. #IEedchat
  • judykaylane Feb 26 @ 10:47 PM EST
    take a joke #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:47 PM EST
A4: They take it personal and hold grudges towards Ss, come on they are kids and their frontal lobe is still developing. Be the adult and let it pass, make every day a new day. #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 Feb 26 @ 10:47 PM EST
A4: I've seen teachers take Ss too seriously and get mad at Ss over silly things that really don't matter. Made me wonder if some of the adults forgot they work with children #IEedchat
  • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:48 PM EST
    Q5 in 1 minute... #IEedchat
  • MathButler Feb 26 @ 10:48 PM EST
A4: Over react. React quickly w/o processing the situation. Only exiling Ss off to discipline instead of attempting some restorative practices in class. Ss will respect the space and its people more. They'll also take criticism better. (https://t.co/hgPlglCf62) #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Feb 26 @ 10:48 PM EST
A4: Honestly, the most common mistake I see is when teachers let their temper get the better of them and further agitate a student instead of using tools to de-escalate the situation. #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee_Edu Feb 26 @ 10:48 PM EST
A4: Jumping to conclusions & assuming a person had bad intentions. Get all the info before making a decision. #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:45 PM EST
Q4: What are some things other teachers have done to make things worst in situations that could of been handled very easily? #IEedchat
  • Chrisjlara24 Feb 26 @ 10:48 PM EST
A4: I’ve seen teachers take a student way too seriously who was joking and turn the situation super hostile. Know your kids and their humor #IEedchat
  • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:49 PM EST
Q5: What are some tips or skills that you have used to brighten up a difficult situation in the classroom? #IEedchat
  • jswilliams Feb 26 @ 10:50 PM EST
A5: Self deprecating humor always works. #IEedchat
  • MathButler Feb 26 @ 10:50 PM EST
A4: cont'd Most times I've found that the kind of things that students do that drive teachers nuts, usually have something to do with life outside of class. Slow down, give the kid some time and space. Offer a break, and state expectation to return in better state. #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:50 PM EST
Even if the T overreacts, they should recognize that their actions have far more repurcussions and can affect students emotionally. Tell the Ss sorry and apologize about your reaction. #IEedchat
    In reply to @JSynnott1
  • Chad_Shaner Feb 26 @ 10:51 PM EST
A4: overreactions can lead to unnecessary escalation. Some students feed off that kind of energy #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:51 PM EST
They poke a bear with a stick, you gotta let it roll off your sleeves. #IEedchat
    In reply to @AshleyMSJC5
  • JSynnott1 Feb 26 @ 10:51 PM EST
A5: Smile, show on the outside that the difficult situation or scenario isn't affecting you on the inside #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 Feb 26 @ 10:51 PM EST
Yep, apologized to Ss more times than I like to admit, but it is so important #IEedchat
    In reply to @rguztec
  • MathButler Feb 26 @ 10:52 PM EST
A5: second this. Make the weird/bad cool https://t.co/FtOcP5jc17 Pee your own pants. #IEedchat
  • judykaylane Feb 26 @ 10:52 PM EST
A5: ok ...Ss... open the dictionary and write 10 sentences for the 10 vocab words...jk! #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:49 PM EST
Q5: What are some tips or skills that you have used to brighten up a difficult situation in the classroom? #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:52 PM EST
A5: I start singing or imitating a line from a movie, they kids get thrown completely when they hear me sing. There like "whoa, that was you Mr. G, you should do Ameican Idol" #IEedchat
  • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:53 PM EST
Q6: Drop some resources - posters, websites, videos, gifs, etc that can help brighten a dark day. #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee_Edu Feb 26 @ 10:53 PM EST
A5: Share how I am feeling & have Ss to do the same. Had a difficult class where Ss were mean to each other. Start of class each day Ss had to share one positive quality about a specific person by looking them in the eye & telling them. #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator Feb 26 @ 10:49 PM EST
Q5: What are some tips or skills that you have used to brighten up a difficult situation in the classroom? #IEedchat
  • rguztec Feb 26 @ 10:54 PM EST
Some of our colleagues don't realize this and it is something they need to remember. #IEedchat
    In reply to @JSynnott1
  • DeatraLee_Edu Feb 26 @ 10:54 PM EST
Yes! I always told my students I want to make your day better, not worse. If something is going in your life, let me know so I can help or give you some space. #IEedchat

  • Chrisjlara24 Feb 26 @ 10:54 PM EST
A5: I simply try to use humor or at least a smile. It’s a start #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Feb 26 @ 10:55 PM EST
A5: If your heart is not in the right place, there is nothing you can do to brighten a difficult situation. The #Charlottesville racist incident was handled in beautifully or horribly depending on what room you were sitting in... #IEedchat
