#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
@Flipgrid is definitely a great tool for storytelling. I love that the download feature can give you multiple S's videos and they can be pieced together. #FLEdChat
Yes! I love blogging. Had my students blogging on a platform last year which is now out of business. "sad face," I am using @FreshGrade for their posts now. #FLEdChat
One book that changed my entire life was: "Please Stop Laughing at me: One Woman's Inspirational True Story" by Jodee Blanco. I was a Media Specialist when I read it and met her. Changed the way I saw my students. #FLedchat
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George from when I was a kid. Helped encourage my love of nature. More recently, Yes, Chef: A Memoir by Marcus Samualsson--encouraging sharing of food. #FLedChat
Q3: Diversity & Community: Stories make us think, question, and act. Explain how something you've read has caused you to think, question, or act. #FLEdChat
A3.2 I also like how Stanley Yelnats and Hector Zeroni in Holes by Louis Sachar, from two different cultures become great friends through obstacle. #FLEdChat
Another book that had an impact was pure fiction but the main character and I shared a birth date. "Can't Wait to Get to Heaven" by Fannie Flagg. #FLedchat
A3. OMG! The Liberal Redneck Manifesto: Dragging Dixie Out of the Dark. Just finished & even though I don't consider myself a redneck, I was born & raised in TN, so it really resonated! #FLedChat
#FLEdChat Gifted Hands - Ben Carson. The book itself didn't necessarily change MY life, but it was the first book I used in Baltimore City moving away from TERRIBLE textbooks in an attempt to be more culturally responsible... Never looked back
Oh my! This post tells me that there is value in reading, even if it may not be completely down our alleys. And likewise writing our stories. #FLEdChat
Jodee Blanco's book made me change my entire outlook about my role in the lives of my students. It was an Epiphany. I actually asked God for forgiveness for the person I had been before that. Pivotal moment in my life. #FLedChat
There is certainly MUCH to be said for the context of the pages that bring about new awareness and decision making man, thanks for sharing this! I need to add this to the list. #FLEdChat
Yes Dennis, I think the power is in it all though. I've read some powerful fiction stories, even historical fiction like "Esperanza Rising" and I get chills. #diversity#FLEdChat
#FLEdChat: I'd love to know in what ways others are addressing the diversity issues at their schools, i.e.: ELLs, NES, culturally biased assessments, gender inequalities, the egregious effects of tracking which in math in Florida is REQUIRED, etc... What are we doing to our kids?
A4. One benefit is that your Ss begin to see you as a fellow human. It helps create bonds, especially when our Ss are able to find common ground with us. #FLedChat
A4: I think it's good for students to role-play how they can respond in a situation. Sometimes it's difficult to act, when you are caught off guard. #FLedChat
#FLedchat I model a writing story about myself growing up as a young Mexican American girl. My Ss are always amazed because I donβt for the stereotype.
It is hard to say any one book or story changed my life, but it seems that the right story is almost always there at the right time in my life, if I but read/listen/see. Furthermore, most stories have at least one βtake awayβ element for me. #FLedchat
I've blogged about so many things. I don't know why I've never blogged about this. At the time, I didn't even know anything about blogging. Maybe it is time. #FLedChat
A4: children benefit when they can relate to the educators in their lives. When we tell our stories they are more empowered and more likely to succeed because we are a positive reflection of the community. #FLedChat
I went to a writers group, won the last drawing so got the last pick of books on the table, met the author there and felt the subject matter so timely. A Southern girl myself w/ Ps & Grandparents who lived thru this.. #GreatMemoir#FLedchat
I hear you. I will have to get to work on it. It's tough to share about the part of me that I don't like. But it is important to show that we can all grow and change.
#FLedChat
Yes Christopher and I believe they will perpetuate the storytelling too, because of us taking the step to share. Almost building that storytelling culture. #FLEdChat
A5. I still love Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr, Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, and Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. All for different perspectives. #FLedChat
#FLEdChat: while I think stories of Jackie Robinson, Dr. King, Rosa Parks, etc are important, there were/are other influential African Americans, Latino Americans, Native American, stories we all (including or kids) need to read/know
Those are great ones Timothy. I think you and I can also be on the list because we have experienced diverse paths, events, in life...that could help others, students, no matter who they are #FLEdChat
I found this one, while not particularly looking for any book, in a library, checked it out & how relevant it is almost 20 years later has really motivated me to work for #PositiveCulture today! #FLedchat
A6. How the White Teacher Became an Honorary Peanut Head. The story of my teaching in the same neighborhood for 15 years. (I was called this by a parent & grandparent, so I consider it an honor!) #FLedChat
Perfecto! We definitely need to teach kids the art of constructive argument, seeing reason, hearing sides and formulating opinions while respecting the opinions of others. #FLEdChat
Sometimes it takes reading history and feeling the need for change/difference then to realize we still need that change/difference now...and weβre here in the now w/ opportunities to do something about it! #FLedChat
Folks I would like to thank you all for your participation tonight, I have to go back and grab all the titles and books, would be so cool if we together could START something big! #FLEdChat
Please follow the Padlet to add any resources you may have, or gain any ideas. I love love love this chat and I am so glad I can moderate with your presence! #FLEdChat
