Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
Welcome to the first #LATICchat of 2019!
Tonight we are talking Student #GoalSetting to Support #SEL ...
Introductions, please... and add in your one word to describe student-driven learning!
A1) Learning is social; working well together is critical. Learning is enhanced by those who know themselves as learners and can manage themselves. Strong decision-makers can push learning farther by finding and solving problems. It's all there ... and all #LATIC!!!!
#LATICchat
#laticchat understanding SEL helps build opportunities for Student collaboration and opportunities to learn and become global citizens who have confidence to change the world
A1: SEL skills are based upon executive function skills - which underlie success in navigating both school and life. Students who are self-aware, socially adept and problem-solvers will be positioned to take on any academic challenge! #LATICchat
A2: Having students schedule their instructional time provides them with ownership over their learning. At the same time, it creates a structure for ongoing goal-setting and authentic feedback to those goals. #LATICchat
#LATICchat as humans we are social and many aspects of our lives rely on our ability to collaborate. Intentionally developing that life skill through learning is important.
Agreed, Julie! I love how teachers leverage the analytic rubric to make this happen. Gives students a visual and clear expectations for goal setting. #LATICchat#SEL@CWTESPrincipal
A2 goal setting is something we really strive to discuss with students during conferencing. We also kicked off our new year discussing setting goals vs resolutions as well as “one word” for the new year! #LATICchat
A3) I think Table Journals are so important for a group of students to reflect at the end of a group session. Let them self assess and set goals on how well they work together as a productive, consensus-oriented team. #LATICchat
#LATICchat also, the earlier we can develop this skill in students, the better. The time that can be recaptured in adulthood when you know what type of learner you are and you are comfortable with who you are as a person.
Yes! The ability to connect and collaborate with others is SO important in all aspects of life. We can build that skill in school so meaningfully. #LATICchat
Yes! These are the skills we hone in preschool and kindergarten ... the recent overemphasis on academics (ignoring SEL and executive function) is doing a disservice to students in the long run. #LATICchat
A4 when they can put themselves in others’ “shoes,” they are able to think about the impact of their decisions and evaluate prior to making decisions #LATICchat
CA my group of students this year seem very used to right/wrong questions and are unsettled when you ask them higher level questions thinking they’re “wrong.” My goal is to get them more comfortable with taking risks and really grappling! #LATICchat
So true! They'll be more invested in making quality decisions in the classroom and so will have a strong 'felt need' to learn the content as well! #LATICchat
A4 when they can put themselves in others’ “shoes,” they are able to think about the impact of their decisions and evaluate prior to making decisions #LATICchat
Thanks for joining us tonight, #LATICchat Friends! We will keep the #SEL convo going next week with #PBL through the #SEL lens! I can't wait! As always, thanks for the inspiration!
A2 on a daily basis S’s set goals and monitor progress with pacing guides. Choices allow them to further develop EF skills. During ALU launches I like to provide foreshadowing activities that allow S’s to predict and also set goals. #LATICchat
Thanks @Tanya_IDE and @fhillmanide for your ongoing moderation of #LATICchat ... and thanks to all for your thought-provoking ideas. Have an awesome week. See you here next Thursday at 8! Change The World!
A3 I like to use Yable Journals for individual and group reflections. I also like to encourage peer review and peer edits for each step in the design process as we work towards our goal. #LATICchat
A4 developing empathy in our S’s forces them to seek, look at and respect multiple perspectives. This will make our S’s more informed decision makers and problem solvers. #LATICchat
Love the "One Word" I used it at the beginning of the year and revisit it after midterms. Let them use dry erase markers and write the words on the windows. #LATICchat
