  • nsulla - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1) Learning is social; working well together is critical. Learning is enhanced by those who know themselves as learners and can manage themselves. Strong decision-makers can push learning farther by finding and solving problems. It's all there ... and all #LATIC!!!! #LATICchat
  • CWTESPrincipal Jan 10 @ 8:08 PM EST
You have to address the whole child before you are able to teach them. Basic needs come first! #LATICchat
    In reply to @Tanya_IDE
  • speducator15 Jan 10 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1 Ss need to feel comfortable and confident in their own skin/learning environment before they are ready take risks and grow academically #LATICchat
  • Tanya_IDE - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:09 PM EST

#laticchat understanding SEL helps build opportunities for Student collaboration and opportunities to learn and become global citizens who have confidence to change the world
  • nsulla - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:11 PM EST
so true, Paul ... Ss can take advantage of a rich, collaborative learning environment if they possess strong SEL skills #LATICchat
    In reply to @MrLepore1
  • CUrayIDE Jan 10 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: SEL skills are based upon executive function skills - which underlie success in navigating both school and life. Students who are self-aware, socially adept and problem-solvers will be positioned to take on any academic challenge! #LATICchat
  • Tanya_IDE - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: When Ss are efficacious, they can do anything, learn anything, and achieve EVERYTHING! #SEL is key to that happening. #LATICchat
  • Tanya_IDE - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:12 PM EST
Yes! And welcome back, Paul! Great to see you here at #LATICchat
    In reply to @MrLepore1
  • CWTESPrincipal Jan 10 @ 8:12 PM EST
#LATICchat First and foremost they need to learn how to set a goal, start small and make it achievable in order to celebrate often in the beginning.
  • Tanya_IDE - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:14 PM EST
    Q3 is up for #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Jan 10 @ 8:14 PM EST
Felicia from NJ excited to join in #LATICchat for 2019. My word is efficacious!
  • CUrayIDE Jan 10 @ 8:14 PM EST
A2: Having students schedule their instructional time provides them with ownership over their learning. At the same time, it creates a structure for ongoing goal-setting and authentic feedback to those goals. #LATICchat
  • snbeauford Jan 10 @ 8:15 PM EST
#LATICchat as humans we are social and many aspects of our lives rely on our ability to collaborate. Intentionally developing that life skill through learning is important.
    In reply to @nsulla
  • nsulla - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:15 PM EST
A2) The Great Student Rubric could be written to include all of the SEL components. #LATICchat
  • Tanya_IDE - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:15 PM EST
Agreed, Julie! I love how teachers leverage the analytic rubric to make this happen. Gives students a visual and clear expectations for goal setting. #LATICchat #SEL @CWTESPrincipal

  • speducator15 Jan 10 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2 goal setting is something we really strive to discuss with students during conferencing. We also kicked off our new year discussing setting goals vs resolutions as well as “one word” for the new year! #LATICchat
  • snbeauford Jan 10 @ 8:17 PM EST
#LATICchat I agree! It’s important to note that as educators we are developing citizens that will be required to be productive members of society.

  • nsulla - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:18 PM EST
A3) I think Table Journals are so important for a group of students to reflect at the end of a group session. Let them self assess and set goals on how well they work together as a productive, consensus-oriented team. #LATICchat
  • snbeauford Jan 10 @ 8:18 PM EST
#LATICchat also, the earlier we can develop this skill in students, the better. The time that can be recaptured in adulthood when you know what type of learner you are and you are comfortable with who you are as a person.
    In reply to @speducator15
  • Tanya_IDE - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:18 PM EST
Yes! The ability to connect and collaborate with others is SO important in all aspects of life. We can build that skill in school so meaningfully. #LATICchat

  • nsulla - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:19 PM EST
Yes! These are the skills we hone in preschool and kindergarten ... the recent overemphasis on academics (ignoring SEL and executive function) is doing a disservice to students in the long run. #LATICchat

CA my group of students this year seem very used to right/wrong questions and are unsettled when you ask them higher level questions thinking they’re “wrong.” My goal is to get them more comfortable with taking risks and really grappling! #LATICchat
  • CUrayIDE Jan 10 @ 8:28 PM EST
So true! They'll be more invested in making quality decisions in the classroom and so will have a strong 'felt need' to learn the content as well! #LATICchat
  • Tanya_IDE - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:29 PM EST

A2 on a daily basis S’s set goals and monitor progress with pacing guides. Choices allow them to further develop EF skills. During ALU launches I like to provide foreshadowing activities that allow S’s to predict and also set goals. #LATICchat
  • nsulla - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:31 PM EST

A3 I like to use Yable Journals for individual and group reflections. I also like to encourage peer review and peer edits for each step in the design process as we work towards our goal. #LATICchat
  • nyackwiz Jan 10 @ 8:34 PM EST
A4 developing empathy in our S’s forces them to seek, look at and respect multiple perspectives. This will make our S’s more informed decision makers and problem solvers. #LATICchat
  • Tanya_IDE - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:35 PM EST
We cannot emphasize the significance of empathy enough! #LATICchat
