Welcome to #flipclass introduce yourself, subject, level, yrs flipping and favorite superbowl commercial.
Tonight we’re talking about the #flipclass shift in activities in independent and group learning times.
#Flipclasschat
A1 Ss ask better questions, having worked out the answers to their more basic ones themselves between watching the lesson and class time #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1: Students are able to get way more questions answered while they're in the problem solving process. I'm able to provide that support when they need it most. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1 cont’d - as a result, the in-class discussion is more fun/stimulating for me :)! Though you have to be prepared to say “I don’t know” when their Qs get really good!!! #flipclass
They didn't say a lot of particulars, but I think what they were getting at is the videos help them focus & I know they like going at their own pace. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2: A challenge I still have is having enough - and proper - things for the kids who understand the material quickly & get through what I have planned. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2 training the students to take it seriously - no, I’m not just going to teach it to you in class. You didn’t watch the video? Go watch it now, and next time come with it watched. #flipclass
A2 one of my challenges is to get Ss asking questions about the video lesson like they would in a lecture. The time shift is tough for them to adjust to. #flipclasschat#Flipclass
YES! I do enjoy the game of Ss trying to trick me into lecturing over video lesson content. I'll converse, answer questions, clarify, but not re-lecture. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2 training the students to take it seriously - no, I’m not just going to teach it to you in class. You didn’t watch the video? Go watch it now, and next time come with it watched. #flipclass
I agree with this. I have "Questions?" at the end of guided notes, and I rarely have someone ask a question about the video/notes. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2: Keeping students on task can be a struggle for me. With the extra freedom some of those good conversations can drift into other tangents and distractions #flipclass#flipclasschat
This is true, but I am SO much better at telling mathematical conversation from distractions since I hear it much more often now! #flipclass#flipclasschat
the idea here is that students can complete lower order tasks relatively efficiently in the independe t space while inversely higher order task require far more time. for me group space and teamwork make high order more efficient #flipclass#flipclasschat
A3 first yr we were glad to finish lab and get to the post lab. Now there's time for discussion, problem solving, student choice in how to show they learned. #lfipclasschat#Flipclass
A3 this is an area where I want to grow. I think though of a role-playing activity I had a class do last semester - would have run much better if the Ss had done necessary learning & reflecting in the individual space rather than diving into it off the cuff in class #flipclass
My college Ss are doing group challenge problems. We did ranking tasks and had some great discussion. There was time for everyone to have a voice. #flipclass#flipclasschat
#flipclasschat A3: Roy from Alabama. Arriving fashionably late tonight. Overall class time after starting #flipclass certainly touched the higher cognitive levels more routinely. Roll Tide.
A3 I also want to have chem Ss propose a pathway to synthesize a complex organic molecule, & argue with someone with a different pathway which would be better #flipclass
A3: I'm with Joy, this is also an area I want to improve. Students need enough time and practice to process the info they got from the video, but I want to develop/find more resources for students to take that understanding deeper #flipclass#flipclasschat
Mastery checks could help with this. Have students prove the skill is mastered w/a quick check and then move on to deeper stuff. Some will move sooner than others. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Ah, ok, or levels of organization in the body (cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism)...or larger for ecology...or even larger for astronomy...or smaller for atomic theory! #flipclass#flipclasschat
It will definitely add some extra beautiful learning chaos to your class, but Ss will get what they need instead of you guessing. #flipclass#flipclasschat
I really like that idea, but there are times where I feel like there is so much content to get though that I already feel rushed for time even with #flipclass#flipclasschat
#flipclasschat Amount of deeper stuff that happens will very from class to class. The processes of #flipclass usually grants more class time. Time gives Ts options to either solidify the basics or to delve deeper, depending on your circumstances.
I want to try mastery with the organic chem unit in gr 12 chem this year. I’ve been thinking of mastery checks as being really 2nd or 3rd level Bloom’s, though...but it opens up higher-order possibilities when enough people are ready #flipclass#flipclasschat

I have seen some unsuccessful attempts at providing important material in a video lesson but not using it and assuming Ss would value it. :( #flipclass#flipclasschat
Late arrival to #flipclass. Chris, Philadelphia region, High School #anatomy#physiology
A4: By having this student-made banner hanging in our room. Serves as ever-constant reminder of the importance of our work.
I love the idea of using mastery. I've been pondering it for a while...just not sure how to make it work best yet. That's high on my list of goals for the summer. #flipclass#flipclasschat

I used it most when we were doing physics practice probs. Took some kids 1 of each other more. It gave time back to the Ss who were quicker and gave a path for help to those who needed it. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A4 often I’m flipping question types that are complex enough to answer that I want Ss to be able to pause/rewind them so the natural next step is to have them practice that solution process in class - we can move to higher-order when they can do those OK #flipclass
Since you brought up mastery learning - Here's Q5 (courtesy of @matthew_t_moore ) #flipclasschat#flipclass puts a lot of focus on the independent space for preparation. However do we effectively utilize the group space as lead in for independent mastery?
That's probably how I should approach it too...test it out for a unit and see how it goes and then build from there instead of trying to go all in at once #flipclass#flipclasschat

Q5 I'm not full mastery, but #Flipclass has provided time to be flexible with Ss so their learning timeline is a better match with the course timeline. #flipclasschat
