  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:02 PM EDT
#atchat Do you work with students who are 2 or more grade levels behind in reading. If so, this case study is for you!
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:03 PM EDT
Looking forward to learning more tonight. I really liked uPAR when I tried it #atchat

    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:08 PM EDT
#atchat Q1: Based on this data, what types of support would a student like this get in your district?
  • KellyFonner Nov 2 @ 8:09 PM EDT

  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:10 PM EDT
Be sure to look at GE and IRL Grade level and Instructional Reading Levels. Remember this is a 3rd grader. #atchat
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1 IEP plan with pullout sped for reading... or Tier 3 intervention or Title 1 reading. those are the choices for us #atchat
  • darlaashton Nov 2 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: direct instructional interventions and I would be giving the PAR to if/which reading accommodation would be appropriate #atchat
  • KarenJan - Moderator Nov 2 @ 8:10 PM EDT
    What's going on there? #ATchat
    In reply to @KellyFonner, @mmatp, @possbeth, @SMarfilius

#atchat Thanks Maureen. Are these what other districts provide?
    In reply to @bcdtech
  • KarenJan - Moderator Nov 2 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1 - Text to speech with access to grade level content. Need to close the potential vocab gaps. #ATchat
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:12 PM EDT

In the classroom? Pullout? With an aide? Her levels were really low #atchat
    In reply to @KarenJan
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:13 PM EDT
#atchat If we look at your response & Maureens I see a lot of human supports, and intervention often pulled out.
    In reply to @darlaashton
  • KarenJan - Moderator Nov 2 @ 8:14 PM EDT
depends upon what she needs access to. In the classroom with an iPad. #ATchat
    In reply to @bcdtech

In the classroom? Pullout? With an aide? Her levels were really low #atchat
      In reply to @KarenJan
  • lrdichiara Nov 2 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Definitely consider TTS. Some younger Ss have access 2 scanning pen if not ready for higher tech. Also direct rdng service provided #atchat
  • darlaashton Nov 2 @ 8:15 PM EDT
w/ that data we would be having talk immediately on grade level text being read out loud to give access to curriculum #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Love this! So she has good comprehension when read to. Needs Learning Ally, or TTS in the classroom #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • possbeth Nov 2 @ 8:15 PM EDT
    #atchat Q2
    • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:14 PM EDT
#atchatQ2: Here is additional data collected by Ss teacher. Based on this data from uPAR, what is your recommendation for this student?
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:16 PM EDT
#atchat I also see modified text. Heck we might even be symbolizing the text.
    In reply to @KarenJan, @bcdtech
  • darlaashton Nov 2 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A2: human audio it is! #atchat
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:16 PM EDT
My only question with modified text/symbolized... who is providing this? #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski, @KarenJan
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:16 PM EDT
#atchat we can even quantify the difference accommodations make. At this point a Human Reader shows a 4 grade level difference!
    In reply to @bcdtech
  • lrdichiara Nov 2 @ 8:17 PM EDT
@rziolkowski Do the percentages reflect accuracy rates? Just double checking! #atchat
    In reply to @possbeth, @rziolkowski
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:17 PM EDT
#atchat So would you try to introduce TTS??
    In reply to @darlaashton
  • wernedat Nov 2 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2 with a jump in comprehension it's clear that some tts would benefit #atchat
  • KarenJan - Moderator Nov 2 @ 8:18 PM EDT
But a human reader promotes dependence. Need to think independence and move to high quality TTS #ATchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski, @bcdtech
    • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:16 PM EDT
#atchat we can even quantify the difference accommodations make. At this point a Human Reader shows a 4 grade level difference!

  • proudone2 Nov 2 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Hi #atchat. Sorry to be late.
  • possbeth Nov 2 @ 8:18 PM EDT
why symbolize text? Research doesn't support. Gear text to her level and illustration support #atchat https://t.co/HkJqMFqIN2
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:19 PM EDT
#atchat She has GREAT comprehension. She is ABOVE grade level. But the recommendation was pre-k text.
    In reply to @bcdtech
  • KaraGuiff Nov 2 @ 8:19 PM EDT
also needs to become more able to perform with text reader - unfortunately In Indiana most must use text reader. #atchat
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:19 PM EDT
I interpreted human reader to natural human voice TTS- vs robotic machine voice #atchat- not an aide reading to her
    In reply to @KarenJan, @rziolkowski
  • mmatp - Moderator Nov 2 @ 8:19 PM EDT
yes I would try introducing TTS also. #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski, @darlaashton
  • darlaashton Nov 2 @ 8:19 PM EDT
yes i would WITH the understanding that some sort of direct instruction for intervention is still needed. #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:19 PM EDT
#atchat I agree but if we did a 2 week trial, we might not see results. Plus the Ss might say they like human
    In reply to @KarenJan, @bcdtech
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:20 PM EDT
PreK text would be awful for her.... condescending #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:20 PM EDT
#atchat Agreed but when u get intervention recommendation of Pre-K text there is a high possibility of this or really boring text
    In reply to @possbeth
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:21 PM EDT
#atchat agreed-this is what people are so afraid of that we will stop intervention.
    In reply to @darlaashton
  • lrdichiara Nov 2 @ 8:21 PM EDT
If the need for accommodation is there then wouldn't T or service prov creates the modified work? #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski, @KarenJan, @bcdtech
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Q3: #atchat Why does the uPAR data provide such a different perspective than the Intervention Data?
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:22 PM EDT
#atchat behavior problems? This child was starting to withdraw. Self confidence going down the drain.
    In reply to @bcdtech
  • darlaashton Nov 2 @ 8:22 PM EDT
lol i hear/see opposite. "can some tech fix this?" tech will never replace a good teacher with good intervention. #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:22 PM EDT
The who does the extra work piece is always an issue. T has no time. Para is with student, etc. #atchat
    In reply to @lrdichiara, @rziolkowski, @KarenJan

Q3: #atchat Why does the uPAR data provide such a different perspective than the Intervention Data?
  • JudithSchoonov1 Nov 2 @ 8:22 PM EDT
re-wordify, text summaries with scaffolded vocabulary & picture support? #ATchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski, @possbeth
  • darlaashton Nov 2 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Q3: i love that it shows what a S can do with grade level text for comp when fluency barrier is not an issue #atchat
  • lrdichiara Nov 2 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Completely agree! A common misconception. There has to be a combination of supports in place for this S. #atchat
    In reply to @darlaashton, @rziolkowski
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:23 PM EDT
#atchat I totally agree-we need to see AT as all day long intervention!
    In reply to @wernedat, @KarenJan, @bcdtech
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Measures comprehension, not decoding. Depends on what you are trying to quantify. #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:24 PM EDT
#atchat I agree and I think it is a breakdown with Intervention alone. We miss what the students CAN do and lower expectations.
    In reply to @bcdtech
  • KarenJan - Moderator Nov 2 @ 8:24 PM EDT
We needs Accommodation + Remediation, especially at the 3rd grade level. #ATchat
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:25 PM EDT
#atchat why picture support, text summaries-she can comprehend at 5th grade level???
    In reply to @JudithSchoonov1, @possbeth
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:25 PM EDT
I know when I did a uPAR trial and saw that a Ss who read below grade level (6th) comprehended at 9th or 10th- stunned. #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • JudithSchoonov1 Nov 2 @ 8:25 PM EDT
I do like TTS with text highlighted as read. Research supports. #ATchat
    In reply to @KarenJan
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:26 PM EDT
#atchat I agree but until uPAR data there was no accommodation. Intervention was the only focus.
    In reply to @KarenJan
  • lrdichiara Nov 2 @ 8:26 PM EDT
TTS is ideal (pref w/ human voice). Also offer access to scanning pen. She can scan over words she is less familiar w/ #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:26 PM EDT
#atchat and how did this change the plan for this student?
    In reply to @bcdtech
  • darlaashton Nov 2 @ 8:27 PM EDT
also finding PAR helpful for Ts who THINK there is fluency issue and not comp. Intervention needed. Here's data to prove. #atchat
  • KarenJan - Moderator Nov 2 @ 8:27 PM EDT
We advocated for accommodation. Ts see need with the data. #ATchat

      In reply to @KarenJan
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:27 PM EDT
#atchat also cool is you can quantify the impact of the AT for this student! We see it but sometimes others don't including Ss
    In reply to @bcdtech
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:27 PM EDT
It was in the spring... so honestly- not much last year. I passed along info to Jr High and talked with T. Hoping... #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • KellyFonner Nov 2 @ 8:29 PM EDT
#atchat In class by cl basis-review of what reading mats T is using. what we know is that up to 75% of mats r non-text book They r T created
  • bcdtech Nov 2 @ 8:29 PM EDT
But realistically, I see it as more of a UDL issue. 85% of my students benefited by some audio support. Gve it to all #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Q4:More data-What does this data tell you? What changed from Nov-April #atchat
  • possbeth Nov 2 @ 8:30 PM EDT
For 3rd grader there still needs to be interventions, ALONG with accommodations/AT Don't give up on developing decoding that young #atchat
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:30 PM EDT
#atchat so for students like will they lower the readability to "help" the students?

A4: the more you use needed accommodations the more you might benefit from them. getting comfortable with the tool. #atchat
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:31 PM EDT
#atchat I agree but why do we need keep saying this. Why do Ss get 1 or the other?
    In reply to @possbeth
  • possbeth Nov 2 @ 8:31 PM EDT
we would still would be using leveled text--just not textbooks #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski, @KellyFonner
  • lrdichiara Nov 2 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A4: Obvious growth in comprehension skills. Can assume direct services were in place and TTS w/ human voice. #atchat
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:32 PM EDT
#atchat Yes, she was using Text reader more than read aloud. Mom said she doesn't read to her any more. Initial data was 20m/day
    In reply to @bcdtech
  • possbeth Nov 2 @ 8:33 PM EDT
I would hope that it is not one or the other! Tools and high quality instruction go hand in hand #atchat
    In reply to @rziolkowski
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:33 PM EDT
#atchat at what grade level? preK as intervention recommends or 5th grade as uPAR shows?
    In reply to @possbeth, @KellyFonner
  • rziolkowski Nov 2 @ 8:34 PM EDT
#atchat What is interesting to me is so many do trials of AT without building skill in TTS. For some TTS is an aquired skill.
    In reply to @lrdichiara
