Any recommendation for new language teachers for planning and ?
. -an interactive platform for lessons and is a great way to do newsletters
Q1: InstagramELE, Thisislanguage, Quizlet live
A1 My Ss enjoy & are competitive when it comes to having the most XP. Many play a lot on their own time
I still love pollanywhere for live online polling
And as an A1 aside , those came so fast, I'm gonna have to scoll back and start opening tabs!!!!
A1 did this a teacher orientation, but is a scavenger hunt with questions and clues within
Can you talk about how you use Quizlet Live in a meaningful way? Saw your Tweet on this earlier...curious.
A1: ThatQuiz, Today's Meet, Socrative
A1: and
I had a couple of Ss volunteer to make the questions for this last year. really fun to watch them play
A1 Adding to what others already mentioned, YouTube videos :
YouTube. Check out list of .
Ooooh havent heard of either of those, tell us more
I create Spanish cards with target vocab on one side and Spanish explanations on other or Cloze sentences
a1: How could I forget on 1st and 3rd tuesdays????
When Ss request something, you KNOW it's enjoyable.
My classes also LOVE live! They would play the entire period if I would let them
A1 My Ss love for brain breaks.
Quizlet live. You can use pictures, or descriptions, not just word to word. Works great for engaging energy building!
I want to look into this more!
Ok, 'bout ready for Q2, ?
rocks! Definitely check into these.
My kids mentioned FINSTA today, apparently a 'fake' Instagram, they want to use it in class
oo, how do you set up the class accounts?
A1: Treasure hunts around the school with QR codes that give clues using lots of prepositions.
RT A1: Treasure hunts around the school with QR codes that give clues using lots of prepositions.
Q2 Q2 Q2: : Which ONE of the webtools that your Ss like are the best for their TL acquisition? https://t.co/7a1khouZN2
A1: forgot about pacman on https://t.co/7Xk85svNL6 my ss asked everyday for it last year. Great way to review during a novel
Ss can write, put photos, or video...its like a bulletin board where Ss can collaborate and see others' posts
I make it an English forbidden activity so they'll yell out things like "yo lo tengo!" or "quién lo tiene!
A1: Can I be a debbie-downer and comment that “fun” isn’t necessarily the goal; but rather engaging and immersive should be?
I made a separate Gmail and then hooked them up from there! And, it worked out that the handles are all the same.
A2: I really do think Quizlet and Kahoot are really good for language input and interpretive mode.
A2 ask mention..Quizlet & Quizlet Live can do a lot..I also forgot about (it has audio now)
Hypothes.is chrome extension allows for "social reading" so ss can annotate and otherwise "uptext"
A1: Don’t like the word “fun” when having edu discussions because it tends to draw attention to things that don’t promote transfer
Also have students write a bio and use QR code to get the answer. Love displaying S work in a meaningful way!
A2:Duolingo You can also use edmodo in the TL
We spend lots of⏱figuring how to assess our students' but when it comes to our performance we are all evaluated with the same tool
well, it kind of WAS the goal of the suggested/voted on topic!
A2: Anything that promotes AUTHENTIC use with
A2 please clarify...use QR code for which answer? *intrigued*
A2: Mine love Nearpod and Kahoot
Late to ! Elisabeth from Texas:)
A2 I don't know how fun it is, but my kods love the immediate feedback from
Stackup gives credit for time spent reading online (like FVR). Ts and ss who sign up now get free accts FOR LIFE.
A1: quizlet! doing Snapchat like "assignments" bc they are asking for it! Interested if anyone uses Snapchat with their Ss?
Q2: Quizlet Live is extremely successful at vocab recognition - esp in the early stages.
A2: I am a tough critic of tech for class. If I can't make it work in one of the 3 communicative modes, not worth my class time.
Blog post about both (and 3 other tools) almost ready to post
A2 I think Twitter can be useful for Interpretive mode. Ss search for vocab chunks to find comprehensible tweets.
I also enjoy using padlet for brainstorming
Kids write a mystery bio. The QR reveals who the person is. PM for link to my GoogleDoc.
A2: is awesome formative assesmt every so many slides. You can totally "circle" info & Ss draw to check 4 comprehension
A2: Lots are great for Interpretive, I wonder about interpersonal and presentational? Any ideas?
Q2: I'm going to go on the social media end of things again, my ss really enjoy the class Snapchat.
A2: There are so many! Qr codes are priceless they can contain teacher created, authres and student created items
I'm excited to read it! Added Stack up just now...
StoryboardThat for presentational.
we're using Snapchat to make presentations about school. They're going to snap diff locations & talk about each one
I love zondle- T inputs questions so more customized and SS love games
Yes! The ones by are clean and funny!
Q2 which level is this for? love it!
A2: Lingro is a cool tool for interpretive. It allows u to click any word on page for definition/translation
what's something that isn't even interpretive? Maybe coding?
do they have diff accts for class?
Speaking of, & check out ! (Sorry for creeping- I'm super busy!) https://t.co/yVqtTgRP4G
A2 I think Twitter can be useful for Interpretive mode. Ss search for vocab chunks to find comprehensible tweets.
I know does. I'm still scared to make the snapchat leap!
Amanda from Lawrence, Ks Spanish. Joining late!
GoogleHangouts is safe and uses Interpersonal mode.
how is your class using Snapchat, I'm curious too :)
Nice! Let me know if you ever want a webinar about Stackup, I'm here to support!
have to stay away from interpersonal and (most) presentational due to district restrictions. Tough having 5-10yr olds
Aren't Google Hangouts going away?
A2: really like edPuzzle for comprehensible input
I have been using Instagram, we are a laptop school and we use discussions in Schoology.
Yet if it is perceived as "fun" affective filter is lowered & natural acquisition is enhanced. https://t.co/GpdDZTMMfs
A1: Can I be a debbie-downer and comment that “fun” isn’t necessarily the goal; but rather engaging and immersive should be?
A2 one tool I love is Pinterest. But not so much for the kids to use of course
I'm loving these answers to question 2. Learning/remembering so many valuable resources!
We were just discussing that at our PLC meeting today
A2 my lone Sp 3 student is trying out eBooks. Great for both int reading & listening though I prefer hard copies
Q2: Without this man, I'd never have known that Spotify had the charts by country and lyrics that pop up. https://t.co/CqoZ10LnZw
I'm loving these answers to question 2. Learning/remembering so many valuable resources!
Tried for AP convo practice today! Loved it.
A2: anyone using readability? Just learned about it as tool to identify the reading grade level of a given site...
I use EdPuzzle a lot with Spanish commercials. Breaks it done for the Ss so they can understand.
I just got Google Certified and it was on the test - so I have no idea.
My district is pretty strict w/Ss privacy laws. No apps that require students to use personal e-mail. Can't put first & last names
they save the videos and upload them later to a diff format. I use it as a student choice thing
A3: Not just filming me explaining things on my whiteboard.
Q3: One thing I've done this year with EdPuzzle is use videos from filming class, not just YouTube videos. Handy to recycle!
my kids LOVE playing on Pinterest in the TL
Q3 One thing I've done this year is use filmed class stories and role play for our EdPuzzle videos w/ harder ?s. i+1 but meaningfl
A3: and Blendspace are helpful
A3 Online teacher here-to make it engaging use differentiation in the tech and in the assignment type.
Whoever just shared Lingro in , you are a legend. What a great tool to learn vocabulary on sites in a different language.
What I loved about them was in the Cloze set kids had to know how to use the word, not just what it meant.
A3 we're trying out nearpod this year! I haven't used it yet, but it seems to be a great flipped class tool
videos are good for Ss who missed class or need to hear a lesson again.
oh yeah:) Speaking of which, I've slacked of late but here's my Música Gozadora 2016 playlist https://t.co/VDSQmNHvco
DUO is the new thing. And YouTube Live. My husband keeps me apprised of these things :D
youtube also can be played at a slower speed by clicking on the cog symbol. Helps some Ss.
That'd be !!! He IS a legend! https://t.co/1Jsujjc7Ld
Whoever just shared Lingro in , you are a legend. What a great tool to learn vocabulary on sites in a different language.
same here which is why we're limited to mostly interpretive activities. Sucks b/c limits Sa to be consumers, not creators
anyone played with Duo yet? I tried YouTube Live...very similar to GHO
my kids are really digging lately for being able to replay and pick the parts THEY can get
I like it! Can you give us an example of a caption challenge?
I forget about that! (Slower speed on YouTube)
There is an instant message feature that saves everything the Ss write.
thankfully they're starting to reconsider some of their stricter policies and giving us a little more trust.
A3: I like to use to make vids more comprehensible. My questions are designed to help comprehension.
I use it too , I used to use educanon and it works well when I leave lesson plans when away.
A3 I try to give them choice. Make them choose how they learn a concept.
Sr. Sexton called me sitting next to me...it showed him making faces b4 picked up
Q3: Make your own videos. try also a combo of and iMovie. keep short & 2the point
so for personal passion project stuff Pinterest is perfect to collect novice resources!
, if you are like me, you are going to need to scroll back through this feed at a more human pace.
There is also where you cause YouTube videos to pause when a question pops up. Promotes interactive listening/watching
A3: Screencasts can be a quick and easy tool to provide direction AND differentiate by sending diff casts to groups of ss
A3: also set up google classroom awesome LMS
at what level? I feel like my babies wouldn't know enough to know where to begin
Wish there were a way to on computer- interpretive and interpersonal!
A3 con't | for example, one group gets screencast giving feedback to review prev day activity, another group gets next step
it is a great too indeed! Works well for flipped classroom
really is a great way to sneak in hints! I like adding my own simplified audio sometimes too!
Yes! I'll let you know how it goes, you do the same. Seems like a much better alternative to "take notes on this thing"
A3 I went to a session at on nearpod this summer. I really want to try it too.Very Interactive.
ALSO a good work around for video you can't download
Just walking back through the great posts from folks and realized...ooops, supposed to be moderating. I LOVE you people!
If you have your own class site, check out Captain Up for insane engagement tools (learned this one from )
Awesome! Yeah, I forget how handy such a short time limit is to force them into talking
A3: Recap is an awesome ipad app and web 2.0 to ask questions & have students record response
Scrambling to find paper since all YOU AMAZING PEOPLE have so many great ideas, there are now too many to rely on my memory alone.
hands down kids' favorite tool last year--seeing each other's Q responses, immediate feedback on theirs
. To give choices have been making Symbaloo collections.
Are you ready to tackle Q4???
dude! Where are you getting all of these tools I never heard of before!
Screencastify is super easy and friendly chrome extension that saves straight to Drive or YouTube.
My "new tab" button is about to wear out, too!
is web-tool Jedi master. https://t.co/oQ5oFbFRyJ
dude! Where are you getting all of these tools I never heard of before!
We at should be following - lots of overlap!
Please give me your wisdom on this tool. Nvr heard of it but I feel like I NEED it
A3 saw on another chat this afternoon that is using Voxer
Nice, I'm excited to try it out. Our Ss FINALLYYYY get their Chromebooks tomorrow
Q4 Q4 Q4: How can we encourage Ss to use technology to find/interact with outside of class? https://t.co/bwnp48Kxxq
Did I share something that's Mac specific?
A4: One thing I've gotten better at this year is compiling people for them to follow online, not just sites to go to to 'study'.
I wonder if the free version is just as good as the subscription though?!?
A4: I want to do a better job of this. Honestly, I think I need to really regroup. So much going on I forget to do this!
A4 Previously I'd encourage them, but now I've gotten better about having concrete ppl they can look up and follow on social media
A4: This is where the word "fun" plays in. If they enjoy the acquisition, feel good and feel motivated, it sells itself.
If "jedi" is Spanish for "Noah has no life" then you nailed it:)
A4: I need to do more, too. Choice homework for starters!
I use it often. It is great for a presentation tool or blended learning but not ideal 4 flipped in my opinion.
Q4 Just created Fun w-Phones. Students hook up phone to projector-tell what they have been using. It went well today
A4: I love SEC MUSICUENTOS post on choice homework and simply reporting back
Yes!!! Jump right in! One PLN! One community! We love ! Thanks, Elisabeth!
A4: I've encouraged my students to follow Hispanic people/photographers/cities on Instagram to see great photos and comments in TL
A4 has finding as an option on their RealWorld Homework assignments
A4 I do the choose your own adventure hmwk. I know a lot you all too. I feel it helps connect Ss to
A4 And themed bellringers especially Jaja Jueves and Música Miércoles have encouraged them 2 find things 2 send me for those days
A4 Showing snippets/teasers of engaging things but making sure they know HOW to get back there.
Right on the money. https://t.co/FFsAh6lN7G
A4: This is where the word "fun" plays in. If they enjoy the acquisition, feel good and feel motivated, it sells itself.
A4: . Check it out . create student twitter chats and moderate!!
Give Ss a menu of things to do (bring a menu, summarize movie, etc) and Ss must complete 5/10 ideas or so. S choice!
A4: "Here's a link that video that was playing when class started..."
A4 Sparking interest in a topic. Last year after a lesson on the 43 students killed in Mexico, Ss found & RT protest tweets
yes, but they limit features. I buy gold levelt totally worth it!
Sitting out on the balconey, glass of rosé in hand and lurking on ! Thanks for mod-ing
A:4 I present people, ideas & places out there in class and give them their handles for them to follow, chat, send msgs.
A4: I use real world homework for this
A4: Helping them to feel like partners, co-travelers, not passive tourists, co-guides seeking things to bring to share w/ me
I am starting each Yr1 class (in week 2) with a Japanese commercial ...we stop to try to read characters too!
jajaja. Try Screencastify chrome extension and you'll join the club on any device running chrome
A4: I'm super chicken about this. Like, beyond nervous 1 of my Middles might stumble across something inappropriate
A4 I will usually show an authres on a Spanish-speaking holiday/festival if I think it will pop up on Snapchat Live that week
me too! It is a start to the Ss connecting to TL
A4: I had the idea last year of visiting a focus country or city through the eyes (aka: Instagram) of others.
Having a class group might be a good idea as well...
A4: it starts in the classroom but I allow students to also bring what they know into the classroom and share.
Ok, crew, the hour is ticking by. Let's take a look at our final Q5...
A3 They make memes, send tongue twisters, snapchats from class (usually w/ me, lol) and captions etc in Spanish, songs, and I use.
Same, but I try to give them tons of different options. Lots of my middle school Ss aren't allowed to be on social media
A3: I have a friend that just used this. She loves it!
A4: Through Others Eyes: search tags on IG. What photos do they take? What tags do they use? Do you understand in their posts?
A4: Latin Grammys coming up soon, you can set up a todaysmeet and live chat the show with ss
8yo going for 100 days in a row on violin. It's day 2.
It gives EVERY kid a voice! perfect.
A5: When I used the tech to save ME time and effort instead of to facilitate/broaden the TASK at hand. [hangs head]
I also love how it reveals perspectives! https://t.co/vkYrhpMcQc
I've been following different travel photogs and it really is a cool way to spark discussion
A5: when the wifi goes down.....
A5:IMO Interpersonal is better face to face, better visual body lang cues
Yeah, we still gotta have chops when there's no connection, right?
A5 Lower levels can get frustrated when they can't understand much of . Really have to scaffold tasks and expectations
Wonder if we could use hashtags to find students taking pics in school or other things like that.
YES! I have actually used a bit less tech in the last year or so.
A5: No internet for almost 10 weeks last year. We're a 1:1 school. WTFlamingos https://t.co/QcN10oKO3p
A5: when the wifi goes down.....
Q5: Grading essays online with is a nightmare. Too much clicking/loading.
screencasts are recordings of what's on your screen...like the tutorial vids on a lot of web sites
I prefer using the Question feature. They can write a good deal and I can see them all in one page. https://t.co/PzWULy6xLF
Q5: Grading essays online with is a nightmare. Too much clicking/loading.
Q5: When Ss get bogged down my the accuracy demanded by nonhuman technology. (textbook wkbooks, quia, GoogleForms, etc)
Q5: Web tools can't replace good teaching. Don't use tech just to be cool.must be intentional to support creativity & acquisition
Q5 Or forgetting YET AGAIN to make individ EdPuzzle codes by class. Every time, inputting grades and they're all together. Ugh.
That's a great idea! How do you ensure Ss don't say anything inappropriate? That was my challenge when 1st using todaysmeet.
A5: Yes! For all their marvel, web-tools sometimes lack the reach to understand https://t.co/TPXmJJRp9J
Q5: When Ss get bogged down my the accuracy demanded by nonhuman technology. (textbook wkbooks, quia, GoogleForms, etc)
A5 i try to use tech as a supplement, a piece of our learning. I try not to make it the center
A5: my school has 1:1 and wifi is in and out constantly. It makes it difficult cuz I always have a back up plan without tech
A5 when you have a tech fail and the plan B- no tech -works better!
We "ran with the bulls" today in Pamplona w/ green screen - intro to our year in Spain- gr. 1-4. https://t.co/5O8Vf1QHAN
Hi after baths & bed! 👦🏼👶🏻 A5: relationships before web tools
absolutely. It must be purposeful
Yes, but text messages, tweeting, snapchat are all important interp. skills. won't always be able to see nonverbal.
Valid question. It's classroom mngmt, pre-teaching expectations. And embracing the uncertainty...they might disappoint
A5: Great advice! Gotta have a backup plan. Even for Ss at home practice, too, I guess. . https://t.co/6ih3QbgdIn
A5: my school has 1:1 and wifi is in and out constantly. It makes it difficult cuz I always have a back up plan without tech
Q5 Yes! Relevance is the engine, planning is the gas, teacher as tires, acquisition is the destination, tech is just the car frame
A5: tech should always be a tool - use it when it is the right one for the job
my students really are loving so far this year! 😊
A:5 interpersonal oral skill - still better off technology unless we use skypeclassroom or goggle conference with guest speakers
omg that is adorable. well done
Q5 Amen! Too many times we use a popsicle stick app when a dry erase roster would do, etc. What's best for the JOB?
Does anyone subscribe to slow Spanish?
Tech tangent: highly suggest getting the Fox Sports VR app and checking out Ohio St game on Sat. Mind blowing!
TA: I wanna try it all! But will head the sage advice of many and do a little at a time
Using Questions for easy grading. Trying .
TA: I get nervous w/ too much tech. I'm a visual learner & need to see it being used. Hard when no one else near is doing it
No those r interpersonal skills because one can ask for clarification to understand.
TA cont: I need to just pick something & try it. Go for it!
My TA: We are better together. I now have probably 50 new tools to try, and reminded about how cool another 50 are!
Thanks @ ! Time to put kids to bed!
TA: I hate that Thursday nights are the toughest for me to make this chat! Love hanging with y'all!
I will learn to use 1 new tech tool proficiently & let Ss teach me how to use others.
TA: lots of new tools tonight! Thanks everyone for the awesome collaborative time!
TA: Need to steal 1 million tech tools from , use tech with intent, and read blog post on nearpod :)
All are welcome to join us next Wednesday at 7 to chat with pre-service teachers!
