A1 We need to provide PD to teachers the way we teach students. PD should offer choice, should be formative, allow time for mastery, provide feedback and support. #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
A1: I would change the following about PD: 1) No more one & done PD; it is ineffective, 2) Balance district PD goals w/ teacher choice PD goals, and 3) create PD that is tangible and helps inform instruction; don’t tell me, show me. #satchat
Good Morning Everyone on #satchat. I'm Ron, Digital Learning for Durham Public Schools. Looking forward to participating in @ScottRRocco#satchat on the future of Professional Development in Education #education
A1: Just like in our classrooms, PD needs to be relevant - I need to see the purpose of it right away. Also, PD should be collaborative, it should be personalized, it should be something I can leave the session excited about implementing. #satchat

Morning all from central Va - I’m back wearing a Prof learning development hat @scl_va after 13 years as a supt among others I’ve worn over the years #satchat
A1: I think many educators would say that time needs to change for pd to offer more relevant topics that offer ongoing support to ensure high quality instruction #satchat
A1 Let's first look at our why...and our words.
Why do we "do PD"? Is it about "development" or "learning"? The best way to inform good teaching is to start with a *learner's mindset* (for both students and teachers).
#satchat
A1: I really think PD need to focus on curriculum and instruction, the basics of formative assessment, and curriculum development. I know this isn't a "sexy" answer, but I think we need to focus on the basics! #satchat
A1 PD should become more focused on individual needs, no longer being a one size fits all. If we scaffold instruction for all students, we should scaffold PD for all staff. #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
A1. PD should b content focused, job embedded, support collaboration, provides a clear vision of what the practice looks like, provides coaching & expert support and offer feedback & reflection.#satchat
PD should be differentiated ... don't make teachers sit in sessions they do not need ... sitting in a PD about software i can't access/doesn't apply to me is annoying #satchat
Brittany from SC. 8th ELA. Sorry for being a little late. Trying to get ahold of my grade level team about if we can all return to work next week here in Horry County. #satchat
A1) I think PD is trending to be more personalized to adapt to an ever evolving educational culture. Maybe more in school/class training/modeling. #satchat
A1: PD needs to happen over a period of time so Ts can try out the new ideas, reflect and adjust. It (PD) also needs to model what we want to see in classroom and sit and get is not it! #satchat
A1. Educators need to recognize students learn different today - student engagement, empowerment and voice/choice must be part of instruction- this must be modeled in PD. #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
A1. This graphic explains the professionally driven model by @jbormann3 from his book #ProDriven. Love how it begins with research and continues with sharing. #satchat
A1: High quality PD needs to focus on what THESE students need at MY school at THIS time. We cannot just jump on the bandwagon with the trending topic of the day. 🤦🏾♀️ #satchat
A1 PD should meet Ts where they're at, should model good teaching strategies - hands-on interactive, relevant. Should also be part of a cycle of observation, feedback, & support. #satchat
A1 If we want high quality instruction in the classroom we should offer high quality PD in the classroom. Put the PD into action for Ts so they can learn how to use the learning w/ Ss! #satchat
A1) Empower teachers with personalized options. Create truly engaging opportunities that are collaborative, hands-on and applicable to the classroom. #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
A1. I’m finding it harder to offer 1 hour sessions on isolated topics - I see more gains from ongoing opportunities through PLCs, topic specific cohorts and flexible time for personalized PD where the teacher sets the agenda #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
A1: High quality professional development should mirror high quality instruction. Focus on how people learn, recognize the needs of individuals and the group, and create meaningful learning experiences with opportunities for application. #SatChat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
Want PD to support & promote “high quality instruction” in the classroom? Then let’s start by defining what “high quality instruction” looks like & then work backwards from there to design professional learning opportunities. #satchat
Yes, I always laugh at this idea. Let's have a hands on approach. My favorite laughable moment was when someone presented all day with an interactive worksheet. It was a good worksheet, but there was no active interaction with is. #satchat
A1: High-quality instruction needs to be modeled to teachers during PD. Demo different ways to present something and then provide time for Ts to work it into their pre-existing lessons. #satchat
A1 To have a purposeful impact on instruction, PD needs to shift from segmented, un-aligned, outside-the-classroom meetings to active, applicable, inside-the-classroom learning for Ts and admins that will directly benefit Ss #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
A1 Good PD starts with understanding the audience and time constraints. Is it in-house PD, or outside workshop? And, for me, I want presenters to model good teaching, not preaching.#satchat
SBPD? (Standards-based professional development) Check out these distinctions among pedagogy, andragogy, heutagogy: https://t.co/dAfQAkKa1X
Morning, #satchat. I'm also Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado.
A1 We need to provide PD to teachers the way we teach students. PD should offer choice, should be formative, allow time for mastery, provide feedback and support. #satchat
A1: teachers need to be given more time to ask questions about what was effective and to share ideas with each other and professional development. Less time being told what works and more time figuring out what works. #satchat
A1: I think quality pd occurs when teachers have input into what the PD is! Professional development teams can make that happen.
Top down approaches are meet with compliance and professionalism, not passion, buy in and enthusiasm.
#satchat
Great to be back with SatChat!
A1. PD needs to be ongoing. I think peer observations can help kick up the quality of instruction if organized properly and followed up with dialogue. #satchat
A1 Hi, #SATCHAT, Kelly here, elem librarian, Charleston. No more passive sit-and-get PD! PD must model the practices Ts are expected to implement in the classroom.
Yes, but more to the idea that if you validate what is already being done, and then offer improvements or enhancements based on school/district vision, it is a win win. #satchat
A1: PD needs to be relevant to the here and now. PD needs to be personalized to meet the needs of all. A one size fits all approach doesn't meet the needs of everyone. #SatChat
A1 PD shouldn't be all staff in a room hearing one voice. PD should be ongoing and happen in classrooms with coaches, mentors, colleagues, and administrators. #satchat
A1: We must work with teachers on methods that promote collaboration and critical thinking. It has to be a shift from consumption of knowledge to active participation so planning has to look very different. #satchat
A1 Effective PD #satchat
Is intensive, ongoing, job-embedded and connected
Focuses on student learning
Addresses teaching specific curriculum content
Aligns with school improvement priorities and goals
Builds strong working relationships among teachers
I love the optimism that all teachers (we) teach students the way you describe in your tweet @BrianHerb17 , “choice, formative, time for mastery...” Moving towards this type of learning environment should be #goals#SatChat
A1 We need to provide PD to teachers the way we teach students. PD should offer choice, should be formative, allow time for mastery, provide feedback and support. #satchat
A1 Educators need to be able to choose training that fits their needs. The training needs to be high quality with follow up activities for the educator to continue to improve. #Satchat
A1: I think the best PD comes from T's or leaders who are forward thinking. PD should not be an afterthought, but should be driving the innovation. #satchat
#satchat
A1: I believe PD needs to be transformative for the participants. If we're facilitating sit and get PD how do we expect our classrooms to look any different #satchat
If we want PD to be effective, sustainable & transferable to the classroom, then the professional learning opportunities for Educators must resonate on a personal & professional level; basically, the PD must matter to educators! #satchat
A1: I love cookies but mandatory cookie cutter PD has got to stop! We know good teaching is engaging, hands on, & differentiated, so why isn’t teacher training this way? I seek out content based PD that forces me out of my comfort zone & grows my PLN #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
A1: I think quality pd occurs when teachers have input into what the PD is! Professional development teams can make that happen.
Top down approaches are met with compliance and professionalism, not passion, buy in and enthusiasm.
#satchat
Great to be back with SatChat!
I think the assumption that teachers need PD to achieve high quality instruction is a bit of an over reaching statement ... i see many teachers achieving high quality instruction without using stuff learned in required PD. #satchat
A1: PD needs to be sustained and embedded into the classroom. That is where the real work happens. Instructional coaches are so important for this reason. #SatChat
A1: Listen to educators...so many are very good at expressing their professional learning needs...they seek their own support or need ‘providers’ who can differentiate support based upon need...not ‘laid on’. #satchat
A1 key for me to quality adult learning opps is still true after a career in this work 1) engages participants 2) includes transfer strategy followup 3) personalizes choices 4) challenges status quo and leads to ?s 5) creates efficacy path 6) keeps focus on S learning #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
Indeed, and I think educators sometimes make the mistake of waiting for PD to come to them instead of taking the first step. The waiting approach isnt sustainable #satchat
I wish there was a way to monitor those things that are compliance based and sometimes important, but without taking time away from growth. #satchat Efficiency is something I always think about.
A1: PD sessions should be times where relevant instructional practices are modeled for teachers with resources that account for different learning preferences. Time to practice what we preach and have less “sit and get” #SatChat
A1: I would like to see a shift towards conversations/soft skills and less “EdCamp model” with 35 edtech options. I think the latter is overplayed. #satchat
A1: It’s just like I learned in my methods class in 1988. It has to be concrete, relevant, hands-on with opportunities to reflect and plan/ revise. #satchat
A2 I have several PD sessions that use recorded video split into sections. They are accessed online with breaks for users to try what I just showed them and then respond to open-ended questions. They can always re-watch and I'm available for Qs and face to face support. #satchat
Your thoughts about recognizing the needs of the group are spot on, Michael. PD facilitators must be prepared to meet the changing needs of participants, even if it means making a shift from traditional delivery methods and content @MikeAudevard#satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
Active engagement on high quality materials where teachers learn HOW to use them and HOW to make strategic adjustments (not random extra stuff or Pinterest worksheets)—warranted by student work #SatChat
Learning in PD or any learning environment is a mindset ... if a person is closed off to finding information on their own they are often the same person who is complaining about PD wasting their time. #satchat
A1: If high quality instruction involves choice, differentiation, and takes learning styles into consideration, so should high quality PD. These articles are helpful: https://t.co/QIPc3siEQj, https://t.co/uU6SVbwKt5#satchat
A1. We were fortunate to have @jbormann3 and his book during this past summer's FAR - Friends and Reading. His book and all of the others are here https://t.co/9CFlAawfNY with resources and messages from the authors. Take a look! #satChat
It’s the difference between training and PD. Training is the districts responsibility, PD is a partnership, and Ts owning the PD is a good start #satchat
A2: I think we need to get away from the "PD day" as our only opportunity to learn - if we want our Ss to be lifelong learners, let's let Ts do that, too thru coffee cohorts, focused meetings, book studies - PD does not have to be so stuffy... #satchat
GM, Bruce from NJ. The best PD gives educators tools they can use tomorrow in the classroom. The best PD gives educators time to learn and try PD tools with students and then time to get more PD. Sharing and learning should be ongoing and not a one day event. #satchat
Hi everyone, Ryan from NYC jumping in late this morning. A1: We need to differentiate & personalize PD for our educators so they can build on their strengths and feel confident to try new ideas in their classrooms. #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom? #satchat
A2: To design relevant, hands-on, sustained PD, need to look at PD days as a whole & focus on the PD that would impact S learning most. Also, incorporating PD thru media (vid, chats, etc.) can help supplement limited PD days. #satchat
A1- This year I want to start all of my building PD unplugged. If relationships R the foundation of our work, it seems best to make eye contact over starring into the Chromebook abyss. #satchat
A2 Add ongoing coaching or mentoring. Require admin to give more meaningful feedback and suggestions. Encourage reflection by providing time in school. #satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
I have to disagree. The organic conversation of Edcamp is unlatched in traditional PD. Edcamps are participant driven and full of choice. I agree focus on the learning first, then apply edtech #satchat
A2: Relevant PD has to be stategic. We have instructional coaches in our district, formerly teachers, and they meet and plan with curriculum directors. It is not one and done. Connections are made throughout the year or over years. #satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A2) I think PD starts in the building but has to be extended out at times. We don’t become better in a day. Mapping out your plan and your growth is essential to all learning. #satchat
Yes -- timely! It should make me want to take a strategy and make it my own. PD shouldn't hand anyone a pre-packaged lesson plan. Yuck! I wouldn't want someone standing over my shoulder while I cook. I want freedom to make a recipe my own. #satchat
A2 - There is not such thing as limited PD days - think of PD as a collaborative learning time. PLCs, shared planning times, morning stand up learning (with free coffee), after school snack sessions, academic coaches on staff all can be PD w/out 'taking a day off'. #satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A1 1st... it has to be by choice, 2nd it HAS to reflect the est practices. Great ideas poorly look resented are a problem for kids AND adults. 3rd. It has to he interactive with take away and follow up. #satchat
Agree, I think shifting from idea of "days" to vision, focus, methods of improvement, whatever you want to call it. I love how teaching is called a practice, but we rarely treat it that way. #satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
Think outside of the box.
Staff mtgs, grade level mtgs, team mtgs, prep check-ins. TIME will always be the barrier so what are we doing to overcome the barrier? #noexcuses#satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A1 Ts should be able to attend PD they find important with the support of the school. If it is truly worth attending and it will impact my instruction and Ss, I shouldn’t have to use a sick day to attend.
A2: As an instructional coach, I have the flexibility to provide what Ts need. Small group sessions, grade level, one-on-one, after school, quick screencastify updates, etc. We make it work! #satchat
A1. In my mind, we need to stop treating teacher PD differently from what we know are best practices for students. Why aren't all of these provided to professional, educated adults as well? Especially when you can do it for free by using a #geniushour format for PD? #satchat
A2: Professional learning can't be limited to PD Days. Utilizing faculty meetings, department meetings, and independent work for learning is important. Much learning can happen informally through observation, feedback, and conversation about teaching and learning. #SatChat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A2: Planning year-long PD has look like planning a unit of study. What is the outcome we are looking for? Then design experiences that build to that. #satchat
A1: professional development needs to be engaging, relevant, and differentiated. So many times I have attended PD where I am being told all about how we need to involve students in learning and make it engaging meanwhile I have sat silently watching for the last 3 hours #satchat
Oh -- we can all be guilty of staring into a device instead of engaging! That impulse to "produce, produce, produce" is ironically counterproductive sometimes! #satchat
A2: I’d argue one and done TRAINING is ineffective. PD? I’ve seen a one time PD inspire and motivate a teacher to do more. Just something I’m chewing on. #satchat
A1: Twitter edu chats are great places to find useful professional learning support...timely, practical, challenging, growth mindset-oriented. #satchat
Agreed, but here is a plot twist ... i had to complete days of "New Teacher Induction" because I was new to the district ...after 12 years of teaching ... I could have led the training for 80% of it ... #satchat
With a limited number of days teacher input is key to relevant PD. When we have a good PD session the conversation naturally continues after the session without a presenter or structure. #SatChat
A2. Educators must have a common vision so there is a focus to PD that allows it to be personalized within the vision and relevant to teacher needs; some of best PD is “designed for teachers by teachers” #satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A2: Everyday should be considered “PD days”. Watching and learning from students, fellow staff, social media, reading, podcasts, etc... Time & money are two “easy/lazy” excuses that fixed mindset people use. #satchat Everyday provides an opportunity to learn
This is an awesome approach Stephanie and we have coaches in our district. They become trusted friends to me and other teachers. Educators need that and they need support! Way to go! #satchat
A2: As an instructional coach, I have the flexibility to provide what Ts need. Small group sessions, grade level, one-on-one, after school, quick screencastify updates, etc. We make it work! #satchat
It could be if you are speaking about things that are relevant to all educators like "how do we want students to think?" Or "How do you plan for diversity in lesson planning?" #satchat The work may be different, but still needed for all.
A2: Less is more. Give your team of educators one district goal & one choice goal per year and then build the time in the schedule. If you don’t make time for it, what are you implying about PD? #satchat
A2 I'm a strong believer in freeing T schedules for weekly individualized PD, but if that's not possible, I think instructional coaches become even more important. Admin should be in the classroom giving ongoing feedback #satchat
A2 well my former district built a coaching model to support work embedded learning that builds from workshop and deep Institute focus / also flipping faculty meeting time helps #Satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A2: I think a lot of this depends on what you value. Good lessons including lots of checks for understanding, small chunked instruction, and well designed assessments to me are all more valuable than the newest tech for PD. Vision makes a huge difference here. #satchat
A2. The OLD model of only using PD days is about to be long gone ... if it isn't already ...
Ongoing learning that continues throughout your career, focused on goals educators selected is the future. #satchat
A2 Educators who are dedicated to continuous professional learning recognize that they are not limited to the traditional times & days. Asynchronous PD allows participants to participate and contribute to PD sessions at different times, while keeping the theme of the PD #satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A2: PD does not have to be conducted solely on designated PD days. Social media platforms and collaborative technology allow for the sharing of materials and ideas 24/7 - even in my PJs on a Saturday morning! #satchat
A2 We need to get creative with follow up methods. Set up fishbowl lessons so others can learn, use a google hangout or classroom to connect, provide resources & meet virtually, offer voluntary after and before school meetings. #satchat
I have loved my department Genius Hour PD for the past three years. It's been so fulfilling to work on my own project and then "deliver" the products to colleagues at the end of the year! #satchat
I think Admin needs to know their people and who needs the guidance/training vs just making sure everyone signs their name on the sign in sheet. #satchat
A2. Working through a second year of a cohort #ftpolaris19 where we meet over the course of the year and use design thinking to change specific pieces of practice - this month participants are shadowing a student and reflecting #satchathttps://t.co/hJ7apk29Tp
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A2) We only have a handful of days with the whole district. We create opportunities for smaller groups of teachers to connect and learn together throughout the year. We also stay connected through Twitter and @voxer . #satchat
A2: When I am presenting a PD I try to work in things that I would do with Ss to have Ts try it out from the S end (That's where PD tends to fall short for me) and then have them work it into their own lessons. #satchat
A2: It can’t be about designated “days” or district-wide PD. Educators today have numerous opportunities for PD and the role of school leaders must change from chief PD organizer to one of coordinator of PD mapping. Lead and “guide” teachers to endless possibilities. #satchat
A2: The continued 1x PD trying to solve a perceived problem fails because their is not continuity, no theme, and no buy in. PD has to be part of a vision that is being built for sustainability. #satchat
A2: working on that now w/ school leadership- looking at the year’s calendar and strategically placing days where I can revisit my initial ideas w/ Ts. Similar how we spiral back with kids, but planned out and reserving calendar space. #satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A2: In the same way that we personalize & differentiate #learning for Ss, we must ensure that we do the same when it comes 2 #PD for teachers. Seek to understand their interests, strengths, weaknesses, & passions then plan accordingly - w/o engagement, there is 0 buy-in. #satchat
Q1: High quality instruction is essential for effective student learning. What needs to change, adapt, and/or adjust in professional development to assure high quality instruction in the classroom?
#satchat
A2: Follow up, feedback, a time and place for reflection, and continuous coaching and support allows for PD to be sustainable. Model during PLC. #satchat
#satchat A2 PD should be planned with an end goal in mind, part of PD should be flipped the way classrooms are today. Somethings will need to be accomplished on their own time to get the maximum benefit. Passionate educators and learners will do just that!
A2: PD can be sustained throughout the year by reinforcements. Share articles! Post images that relate. Devote time at faculty meetings and other mandatory meetings to keep the topics fresh and relevant.
#satchat
A2: One of the best forms of professional learning, that can be sustainable and impactful, is team teaching or mentorship opportunities in classrooms. Creative planning of time is helpful. #satchat
A2 How can the connective abilities of technology make PD more interesting and relevant beyond a chat? Can PD be organized across different districts? So teachers learn from other teachers? So @ScottRRocco holds a PD across time via Skype, for example.#satchat
Too often schools give too much for teachers to focus on, so all of becomes one and done. Narrow the focus to few topics and constantly revisit those; make them a part of all discussions #satchat
A2.1 for beginning of the year PD Academy, I offered a number of introductory sessions to create awareness around topics, then offered a call to action that included booking me to come work with the teacher and their class #satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
I love flipping EVERYTHING! If I know I am going to a PD, I will look at the posted agenda and often, the links are available. I can actually look at slides, handouts, and think about the PD before it happens. MUCH more engaging!
#satchat
A2. When our school was a SIG school the District's required PD days seemed to almost get in the way of the professional learning steam train we were moving along with. #satchat
A2: Planning a year long PD plan with a goal in mind is necessary to make systemic change. Also utilizing unconventional ways to keep the conversation going is important. Social media, teacher leaders be creative! #satchat
Want to personalize PL? Chk out data wise cycles. Have conducted these w Ts, and made great strides in practice & achievement #satchathttps://t.co/D8dhEnx8W5
A2. I like when there's been a great PD and then follow-ups in the classroom to meet for demos, co-teach, small PLCs, so it's ongoing through the year #satchat
#satchat
A2: I recently designed a five month blended model PD plan thanks to my friend @hollysking that has some face to face and classroom walkthroughs but most is self-paced and online through @Seesaw. Also w/ optional times to get live help 2x a month. And badges! #SatChat
Thanks for replying. I find schools use the term “EdCamp style” but it’s not, because like U said, EdCampers choose to B there. This completely changes the dynamic & misuses the term. #satchat
I think you definitely have to be creative and adaptable/agile. Time is very valuable. Empowering teachers as leaders in schools can help create a micro-professional learning community. #satchat
A2: When a consultant/speaker comes in, that is the start of the process. The process and transformation need to be on going for the remainder of the year/years. Building up each day. There is no magic “one time PD” that does it for you or fits all teachers needs. #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
A2: PD must be sustainable. So it can't be a one-hit-wonder.
Best way is to think in longer terms - try to create learning circles, networks. So that learning can be supported by such network knots. It's like a neurologic system with synapses.
#SatChat
A3 Teachers need an opportunity to practice using new #edtech tools, but more importantly, they need to decide how it fits into their curriculum and how it can change their current teaching.Teach them how to hold a brush, then let them figure out what they want to paint. #satchat
A2. A lot of our staff have done such a nice job with before school and brown bag lunch PD opportunities. Technology is also another obvious way to keep PD ongoing with limited PD days. #satchat
Follow up is a big one for me, too. I at least like to have a way to contact the presenter if I have questions or want to say how great it worked. I include my email and twitter account in my presentations for this reason. #satchat
True point, Carla. Our ICs are an invaluable resource that some of us have in our buildings. Their on-the-spot knowledge and instructional support helps us as we make real-time changes to instruction that benefits our Ss @carlameyrink#satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A2: A wise man (Kevin Costner ❤️) once said, “If you build it, they will come.” Ts want this opportunity even if it’s outside the school day. Offer a PLN that meets, supports, grows, & challenges each other over time! @FridayTracy is doing just that & it’s amazing! #satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A2) We leverage learning for teachers through our connections with @remakelearning and @BeaverCountyILC . Our educators can benefit from professional learning in creative and engaging opportunities. #satchat
A2 What visionary lens(es) are created by leaders and/or learners that enable learning experiences to be connected/threaded purposefully over time? What's the *story* of our learning that crosses between & extends beyond PD days? #satchat
A2: We also must consider the use of the faculty meeting as a way to continually reconnect with year long PD. Those weekly meetings ought to be designed with a focus on year long learning. #satchat
A2 Professional LEARNING (as opposed to "PD") must be a central component to everyday conversation. We have to model it, make it accessible to teachers in various forms, and build in personal accountability, for immediate classroom-based application. #satchat
A2: PD should be planned in a meaningful way - pick one or two things and focus on doing them well. This involves creating long term plans (5 years) for roll out of curriculum and programs, especially for elem teachers who do it all! #satchat
A2: Tiffany Moutis, Mansfield, Superintendent: We find our PD to be personalized this year for our staff. We are leveling the workshops to allow those proficient in a topic not to be held back from staff that need to learn the basics. #satchat
A2 If we are thinking PD only happens on designated days then we are doing a diservice to ourselves, our staff and students. PD is not an event. it should be rooted in everything we do. #satchat
I think time is our biggest obstacle with PD, and choice is our biggest request. We’ve got to think outside the box to get it all done. I offer quarterly #TwinTwitterNights & monthly #TechPlaydate evenings for edus in my district. Of course, we encourage #edcamp, too! #SatChat
A2: I’m hoping to create alignment of PL with 4 EQs of a PLC. Identifying high priority standards for teachers, formatively assessing and intervening appropriately will provide clarity, chance for growth and extension! #satchat
Q2 RESOURCE: Read a 2016 article on Change the Odds by Reimaging Teacher Professional Development: https://t.co/Lvjyl1kdvI

Flipping the "imboretant" PD would be helpful, like putting the faculty meeting agenda in Google slides, recording a screencast with all the items, uploading it to EdPuzzle to guarantee that teachers have viewed, and asking some comprehension Qs at the end. #satchat
A2: This question is confusing as it denounces one and done and then refers to them as being limited number of days. - So I would not refer to PD as days at all I guess. #satchat
A3: Specific apps come & go, but use of tech in schools is here to stay. Ideally, time needs to be built into school year to tinker w/ new apps & teachers need PD that builds in time for discovery & practice. #satchat
A2. I was lucky w a school that had a PL where Ts came during one planning a wk. If u don't have that, do small PLC groups around a topic connected to PL Plan. Let Ts facilitate it. Give them Recert points for coming & facilitating. #satchat
Q2: One and done PD is ineffective. Relevant, hands-on, and sustained over time PD shows the most benefit. How do you design such PD with a limited number of PD days? #satchat
A3: #edtech PD needs to meet the teachers where they are. PD needs to show them how to use the technology in their classrooms tomorrow, and build upon this foundation. #SatChat
Principals do more harm than good to teachers if they waste their time. This should be in the front of their mind for everything they require teachers to do outside of the classroom. #satchat
With a limited number of days teacher input is key to relevant PD. When we have a good PD session the conversation naturally continues after the session without a presenter or structure. #SatChat
A2b) I also recently designed some “choose your own adventure” type PD using google sites. Ts answer questions and it guides them through the process of learning, understanding, applying. And it doesn’t have me standing in front of them for hours. Engaging and practical #SatChat
A2. You ensure that the PD has intrinsic value to the teacher and is personally significant to them. By allowing them autonomy in learning what they feel will benefit their classroom, the school or the community most- along with sharing w/the world- you'll get that. #satchat
A2. The importance of a PLC Districtwide...Something has been introduced, training took place, now school teams come together...What's working..what's not #satchat
A2: One thing you could do is provide release time for your teachers to visit one another. They will need time to process, implement new practices, and reflect on how the approaches worked in their own classroom. #satchat
Even working brief turn and talks about the PD topics at meetings and allowing 5 minutes for share-outs would be good to keep that continuum in mind. #satchat
Great coaches make all the difference! And part of that is making sure that our coaches are also getting strong training. Not always easy to be in this position! #satchat
A3: I mean this in the gentlest way...but before putting #edtech in the hands of teachers or students we need to make the case that not only is it effective, but that it's more effective than what we are already doing. Edtech can be great, but is prone to fads! #satchat
A3: I will say that teachers are overwhelmed and they "seem" to walk away from those #edtech opportunities. What does work? When they see it modeled in your own classroom. See it. Want it. Will try it. It requires a sales pitch for some reason. Not sure why. Anyone? #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
A2) I give PD every day. If a colleague needs help they email me and I either help them with email or go help them when we both don’t have class. We don’t have tech coaches, so I end up helping this way. I also will send links to tools I find for other teachers. #satchat
A3: Quite honestly, I don't ever recall #edtech PD other than learning the testing software or intervention software. Districts need to hire coaches for authentic learning. #satchat
A3: #edtech PD needs to be more hands-on... Let me actually use the tech while we're discussing.. Also, I would love to have #edtech PD by department so I can get ideas focused specifically on math instruction #satchat
A3: #edtech PD needs to be more than how to use the tech and focus on how to impact S learning that's not always clear with all of the #edtech being pushed into schools. #edtech PD needs to also be relevant and sustained over time to be effective. #satchat
A3) #satchat when I present #desmos to teachers I think it is important to show how to use the tools, teacher moves, and model how to effectively use it in the classroom.
A3: The problem is the PD is focused on #Edtech How about if the PD focus is “effective teaching” instead? What if we change our mindset and put learner goals first? Good solid instruction might possibly include #EdTech or not 🤷🏼♀️ #SatChat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
A2.3 this year in PLCs I will be working with a 4Cs theme - each team will use a self assessment to identify one are of growth and we will goal set and develop in that area. After school PD sessions will be designed with 4Cs in mind #satchat
A3: lots of times teachers get “trained” on a new tech program but that training often includes just the basics of how the program works. Teachers need to see not only how it works but what it would look like in the classroom. Many ts are afraid to put the book away #satchat
A3. Schools that have students trained to operate "Help Lines" so educators can have easy answers quickly, guide them to upcoming, scheduled PD for the bit more challenging topics or send a tech to their room quickly if needed, are amazing!! #satchat
A3 First we need to move away from the notion that PD means Professional Development; it actually means Professional Discussions. When you start having ongoing meaningful discussions about our profession everything else will fall into place #satchat
That's best way - activate your own resources at school - by far-reaching, PLCs.
It's not always necessary to look for starters from outside.
Often you know your circumstances and problems and solutions are easily found by working together.
#PD#SATCHAT
A2. I like when there's been a great PD and then follow-ups in the classroom to meet for demos, co-teach, small PLCs, so it's ongoing through the year #satchat
A3. Edtech PD must focus on blended learning- helping educators know when to use tech and then how to deepen learning thru rigor and relevance #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
A3: First, schools need a clear plan as to what the #EdTech focus will be. Is it Google Classroom, Schoology, Class Dojo, etc. Then attack it together...you can then move to other things with confidence. #satchat
A3 Most importantly the #edtech PD has to fit the needs, skill set, and tech available to the Ts. Find out where Ts are and meet them there. Then it needs to be something that will enhance the quality and level of instruction. #satchat
My personal definitions; training = how the district wants you to do the job. Onboarding = getting you acclimated to district culture. PD = OPPORTUNITIES for Ts to decide how want to grow and DEVELOP as a professional #satchat
A3: I think that #edtech PD needs to be centered around a skill or concept and include a few different programs that can help with this so Ts have the ability to choose one that could work best for their Ss or incorporate a few to help differentiate. #satchat
A3) I believe TechPD has to be hands on & modeled for instructors. Teachers need to feel comfortable with the tech & how to transfer their knowledge to their lessons & their students. #satchat
A3: we had a #flipgrid session a week ago & my ELA counterpart used it in her next PLC With Ts. Using tech w/in PD to showcase its use would be one way #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
A3: Teachers/staff need to feel that they are allowed to iterate/try new tech out during the year, instead of feeling that they will be “written up”. Leaders need to model and empower staff. #satchat
Spot on! w/o a vested interest in the content / subject there it will be hard for teachers to have ownership, thus leading to little or no buy-in. #satchat
A2 autonomy seems like a core design principle of growth and development work at the individual level but I think it demands an alignment of professional values and behaviors to make autonomy central to adult learning / #Satchat
A3 If the #edtech prof learning is based on learning strategies for students rather than. The newest shiny thing, then it will be purposeful for classes, students. and Ts. #satchat
We did this a lot of my previous school. Peer learning walks are a great way to share practices & get a pulse of the school's performance. But you need to have the right environment for it. Trusting, collegial relationships are key. #satchat
Keep on Learning! I use #OneNote as a way to help faculty/students with what I call "Learning Prescriptions" (Lx) that are a written recommended learning path, with Class Notebook those can be hyper-individualized #satchat#MIEExpert
A2: It can’t be about designated “days” or district-wide PD. Educators today have numerous opportunities for PD and the role of school leaders must change from chief PD organizer to one of coordinator of PD mapping. Lead and “guide” teachers to endless possibilities. #satchat
A3 It's vital to model how #edtech improves learning for students and staff. Once that is done, the use of technology gains importance and PD can be individualized for staff. #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
#satchat A3 people at different places with tech, therefore they need customized professional development to enhance what they Know or don’t know. In the classroom coaching would be the best model so they can help facilitate the use of tech with students.
A3: Maintain the focus on two areas: instruction on the #edtech tool and opportunity for exploration and implementation. Too much #edtech PD is 1-and-done. The tool should be shared, explored, and revisited later on for feedback and reflection. #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
A3 Stop teaching Ts #edtech by showing menus and buttons. START showing GREAT lessons, interactions, and engagement activities. Ts can ask Q's. Curiosity about HOW/WHY! Let them explore as part of the process. #satchat
A3: Edtech PD must be embedded during the instructional day with a full time technology integration specialist. Assuming that "teachers will just help each other on the fly" is not supporting effective PD practices. #satchat
A2. To keep PD alive it needs to be job embedded. We can’t expect Ts to make a permanent change in their thinking until they had time to experiment, play, fail, tweak and reflect. #satchat
A3 Perhaps sessions where Ts bring in lesson plans & brainstorm ways that tech can enhance their lessons, rather than teaching tech tools in isolation #satchat
A2 It is very difficult to offer relevant PD for teachers as they are constantly booked up. We offer training but very rarely get a chance to run it. We offer dropin's but if we can't explain what we are about no teachers turn up. Catch 22 #SatChat
A3: It helps to have an Ed tech who is or recently was in the classroom. Design edtech pd to tackle issues that teachers are facing everyday!
Give teachers concrete ideas and and tools, not theory.
Make it available multiple ways (before school, after, 1-1, etc).
#satchat
A3: This is a tough one. Most of the time, where Ts are with #edtech is waaaay behind where Ss need them to be. For that reason, I will push you outside of your comfort zone b/c #KidsDeserveIt. 🤷🏾♀️ #satchat
A3 We have found that #edtech PD is most useful when it is segmented into easily applicable steps in classrooms & when the PD session is used with actual Ss. This allows Ts to see the #edtech resource being used & anticipate ways to support Ss if they have difficulty #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
Interesting. If those are your definitions I would break PD into 2. Opportunities to decide and then Accepted practices that need to be shared. #satchat Not everything someone "wants" to do is worth doing.
Well, #LearningInTheLoo has been another idea to make the most of PD time! If you’d like to use start this in your district, I have a global crowdsourced Padlet of ideas...borrow or feel free to add: https://t.co/GZvR4Zzpgi#SatChat
A3: In a freelance/gig economy self learning is on going- YouTube, Twitch, Internet, podcast, etc.... We need to focus on teaching in a WiFi world and not be using landline phone methods... #satchat
A3. How about doing coaching cycles around an instructional challenge where #edtech is leveraged as the tool. The #edtech shouldn't be the focus; the #learning should be the focus. #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
A1: PD should be designed much like a high engaging classroom with hands on experiences that put educators in the learning seat where their students would normally be. They need to experience what each level reflection feels like so that they can better reach students. #satchat
A2: PD can be a launching point for a larger question or theme that is then taken on weekly by PLCs and/or teams of teachers throughout a cycle. All staff weekly meetings can be an opportunity to share teams’ learnings throughout then cycle. #satchat
A3 Before wasting time on Ed tech, we need to make sure schools have the tech resources to actually use the training. 4 computers in a classroom is not cutting it. #satchat
A2: One of the best forms of professional learning, that can be sustainable and impactful, is team teaching or mentorship opportunities in classrooms. Creative planning of time is needed to support this! #satchat
A3. I think the best #edtech PD happens between people with relationships. Tech can be intimidating and confusing. PLNs within schools (between among teachers) or on Twitter let you learn at your own pace with people you trust and know care about you and your growth. #satchat
A3: this PD has a digital learning component; Ts learn about and practice one new digital tool per month w/ Ss. And @Seesaw is a new platform Ts are navigating through so they can learn more with it also. #SatChat
A2: I recently designed a five month blended model PD plan thanks to my friend @hollysking that has some face to face and classroom walkthroughs but most is self-paced and online through @Seesaw. Also w/ optional times to get live help 2x a month. And badges! #SatChat
Absolutely! If you can't show the benefits of a tool, why would anyone want to use it? I like my microwave, but I'm not cooking filet mignon in there. It's great for defrosting frozen bananas to make a banana bread. Different tools, different purposes. #satchat
A3 Our Ts find PLAYdates to be helpful. They can choose the tech they want to learn and then spend time "playing" with it. This seems to lower anxiety. #satchat
Learning new tech skills requires time to practice. If the PD is about how to use the tech, then teachers need opportunities to use what they learned. Maybe assign "homework" and revisit later to review successes or challenges. #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
A3) Differentiate for everyone you are teaching. I will do a short demo and then work the room and talk to each educator and discuss how the tech tool can help them. I’ve done PD where the class has k-12 teachers and support staff. One size fits all won’t work. #satchat
A3 I am finding that #edtech Pd is 1,000x more effective when it’s just in time, meets the teacher where they are, and is aligned to a larger instructional goal. Because teachers are all over the board with skills, teacher initiated is most effective #satchat
think we learn tech by using it. it's abt inspiration. we need to be inspired by the 'why" of what it can accomplish. Can kids access info or connect in ways they couldn't without it #satchat
As I read all these great ideas, I still have one nagging question which applies to both T's and S's. How does one spark a love of learning in people who desire one, done and a grade? #satchat
A3) teachers who use #edtech and who are patient and kind need to lead PD on it and need to invite peers into their class to see it in action. Needs to be on-going, focused and persistent PD - one and done won’t stick. #satchat
A4 When I taught a weekly #edtech class, I always started with a simple tool that was easy to use but had a high impact. One minute to demo it and a few minutes for teachers to try it. It got every ready for more complex stuff. #satchat
A3: I get so frustrated when the focus on edtech is procedures of "use of tech" in the classroom. Ex: Checking out the cart. How and when and why. Argh. #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
A3: edtech PD cannot be sit and get, it has to be hands on with time for exploration and discovery during the session, PLAYDATEs. Also planning for individualization, and not supplying a one size fits all approach to teaching and learning. #satchat
A3 use in house experts like your school librarian. Not only do I know about up to date tech I can come to your classroom, teach it to you and your students. Collaboration that not only saves you time but helps you to learn too #SatChat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
A4: Extreme rock, paper, scissors is super fun. https://t.co/UhtkxxnO9l. You can also create your own Mad Libs with the goal or objectives of the PD session and allow participants to fill in missing words. https://t.co/RKc6wI3SFr Very funny. #satchat
A3: #edtech PD should meet learners where they are. Leaders need to model, model, model. If I’m expecting a T to be using a particular technology, I’d better be willing to use it for PD #satchat#4OCF
A3: From skimming the report itself, there are some suggestions within. Personalize the learning and be ready to adapt to new and fast-changing technologies. My addition: embed platform “agnostic” skills so teachers can transfer to other/new products. #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
A3: Also... Technology is part of culture, not an extra! When leaders model/use, the expectations are clear.
I was blown away at my principal's use of our new interactive board at our recent faculty meeting. He was genuine, interacted and used it purposefully.
#satchat
A3 Empathetic purpose-setting, based on understanding of context (including teacher readiness; helps/hindrances in learning environment) bolstered by ongoing support = fighting chance for enhancing teacher tech skills over time #satchat
Agree that #KidsDeserveIt, BUT u can’t push too hard, otherwise people can become defensive, info will be blocked, and the day is wasted. When dealing with people, it’s an emotional balance. #satchat
A3. We gamified PD based on ISTE standards by creating a Grove Board. Teacher completes on activity in each column and they submit their board with evidence to win fabulous prizes ($5DD gift cards, classroom supplies, etc..) #satchat
A3: The PD has to be designed with teachers' goals in mind. For adult learners, if it it doesn't speak to their goals, it won't be used after the session. #satchat
A3 Our technology integrationist, @maryiwanski, is in classrooms all the time to support our staff.Because of that she can individualize training for the needs of each staff member. #satchat
A3: Esp during #edtech PD, don't talk about it--DO it right there on the spot. While doing, also literally and intentionally plan implementation together. Much sit-and-get PD doesn't translate efficiently, isn't easily recalled, understood, or applied in learning spaces. #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
As a Coach, this is the hardest part of the job. I love learning--reading, exploring, watching. But not everyone does. How do I transfer my enthusiasm for growth to others? #satchat
As I read all these great ideas, I still have one nagging question which applies to both T's and S's. How does one spark a love of learning in people who desire one, done and a grade? #satchat
A3 Why are we discussing TECHPD as a separate item? If we do that aren't we creating more silos? Yes, we should have discussions on specific uses but it general tech usage should be modeled everyday by administration, teachers and students #satchat
A3: Edtech needs to be relevant. Sometimes I feel like we are so much Edtech being tossed at us that I don't get to use anything to its fullest. #satchat
A4: I know this is a bit different, but I think starting with the WHY is really important. Why are we here? Why is this important? Why is this meaningful? #satchat
A3: I want an instructional Ed Tech coach in each school. You get 30 minutes per week to meet and they are there for you as you jump in with both feet! It would be such a fun job for someone who is tech savvy and PD would be personalized & hands-on.#satchat
My favorite edtech gives ample time for teachers to create. If you only showcase new apps or sites, we won’t always get the support when we are trying to use them. Give time in the PD to play around and use them. #satchat
A4: I've always enjoyed PD that starts with getting to know the other attendees. I like using relevant videos to help engage educators in a PD session #satchat
A4: Stand up, kinesthetic, problem solving, random grouping, jigsaw or gallery walk, with personal engagement based on objective; Such as T's responses to question. #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
A3 I sometimes think..we see tech as a tool but is more than that? We need to look at how our kids use it...its part of their lives. Its a staple #satchat
A3: Start with the root of the problem...Why is #edtech PD not impactful? Is it sustainable? Is it practical? Does it help Ts with more seamless integration? Is it starting where they are at? Is it differentiated, based on need? #satchat
A3 I would love a show-and-tell #edtech pd where my colleagues share what #edtech they use, how they use it, examples of when to use it. Again...the idea of Ts learning from one another. #satchat
Q3 Resources: Read a 2017 study on Supporting Change in Teacher Practice: Examining Shifts of Teachers' Professional Development Preferences and Needs for Technology Integration: https://t.co/MJfsT9OzzQ
All Q's & resources posted for future reference: https://t.co/K84yty7NR3
Agreed. If tech doesn’t Enhance, Engage, or Extend learning goals in an authentic way, then its just getting in the way. Don’t allow tech to cause a roadblock in instruction #SatChat
A2: Quality sustainable PD is derived from staff needs. If the building initiative is high quality instruction, PD should be installments of each component; quality feedback, reflection, taxonomy, acceleration. It should leave us implementing change immediately. #satchat
A4: I like to have teachers engage in a game or activity they could use with the students. It is fun and important for the Ts to simulate what the Ss would experience. Then discuss what challenges or misconceptions might come up #satchat
Agree with your point, Oona. Our district is the beneficiary of support from @GoogleForEdu where they have supported the incorporation of instructional tech specialists to aide the professional learning of our Ts and grow our Ss @oonziela#satchat
Doing PD IN the tech you want teachers to use is key. If you want teachers to use Google forms, survey them in advance of the workshop. Give them an EdPuzzle to do. Once they see the end product, they'll want to go behind the green curtain and create #satchat
I also think that the classroom is not the only place where kids are growing and learning. #kidsdeserveit yes, but also not #100percent on the teacher. #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
A3: Jumping in on this one...The problem with most #edtech PD is that it focuses on a specific tool and not the teacher/classroom using it. PD needs to be individualized to the point where coaches/specialists are working side-by-side with each teacher, in the classroom. #satchat
A3. Our adult learners are no different then our younger learners. We know that tech skills very and we need to acknowledge this and meet people were they are at. #DifferentiatedPD#satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
Yes. And for an aging population of educators, myself included, may don't get the "why?" I just happen to love it. But you can't make a people fall in love...they say! #satchat
Teachers are skeptics. The proof is in the pudding as the saying goes. How many new initiatives are teachers having to implement every year while being held accountable for the almighty test scores? At some point...it becomes not about the kids.
A4. We did Tchr shoutouts or Tchr Features where they highlighted a strategy that modeled the learning from the last session. Colleagues then asked ?s and gave feedback. It built trust & tchr efficacy in our building. #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
A4: I have done ice breaker activities like Take Flight/Touch Down and Corners to learn about them, what they want to learn in the session, their school population, etc. Music playing as they enter is a good way to get them to relax before the session gets going. #satchat
A3: enhance teachers tech skills - for me it's always a question of usage and the own #workflow.
- Give examples
- Support if there are questions
- Show opportunities (detailed and feasible )
- inform about advantages & disadvantages
#SatChat
A4: Humor and videos are great hooks to get a PD session off and running!!
Ice breaker partner tasks are not!! Ugh
A game is another great way to start!
Right @LisaMeade23 ?
Sharing a shout out or good news is another way to kick off a great PD session!! #satchat
A4 A demonstration of impact. A good story and reason to use the tech. I start with a funny quote that they are not expecting. Give them chance to do rather than sit and listen. #satchat
So true. When we started individualized PD, some of our Ts just didn't want to do the work. Over the past 2 years we've tweaked our methods & as Ts start to see results in the classroom, most of them have become more positive. It takes time to change the culture. #satchat
A4: Always start with music...just something about the electric slide that puts people in a good mood. Don’t force it...just create a playlist and watch the magic happen. Better yet, let staff create a PD playlist. #satchat
A1 Context-specific, in-house PD led by those sharing their experiences and resources from external PD helps sculpt high-quality instruction for our school's students. #satchat
A3. It's important we have the same tools being used in a PD. But I think co-teach model in classroom/school with the edtech company would work. #satchat
A3. We gamified PD based on ISTE standards by creating a Grove Board. Teacher completes on activity in each column and they submit their board with evidence to win fabulous prizes ($5DD gift cards, classroom supplies, etc..) #satchat
Sales pitch - I’ve never thought of it like that but that seems awkward. Maybe because it’s sometimes hard to get started - there are so many variables with tech and so many ways it could fail. Maybe teachers need quick wins with it to build confidence #satchat
A4: When I teach PD on #edtech I'll always start by making the case for it through video and info. I love talking about how the different generations perceive its use and how "into it" they are.
#satchat
On February 19, 1968, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood debuted on PBS Television. During that first episode, Mr. Rogers taught us that change leads to new ideas. Fast-forward 50 years later. In education, we would do well to heed this lesson.
A4) @Think_Collab has some great strategies centered on PD and connecting to your audience. I utilized their “Check-in” format often to welcome guests and initiate them to the PD/Meeting. #satchat
A4: People need to see immediate relevance and this year we used @Mentimeter opening day to create word clouds about makes our school special, get feedback, etc. #satchat
A4. Must model for educators what we desire in classrooms- do engaging things (scavenger hunts, Design challenge, breakout box PD) and help them to know their “why” (thru stories, short videos, former kid panels) #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
A4: Lately our district has been training Apple Classroom! Get your people in a class, group them, send them GIFs/challenges! Tech becomes secondary to design — but they are so intrigued so then they ask how they can do it too! #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
A3: Start by having teachers reflect on where they are on the #SAMR model. This pinpoints specific #PD needed for each individual T. Personalize & scaffold at an appropriate pace. Realize that #tech is only the tool & that Ss #learning always takes precedence over trends #satchat
Q3: In a 2014 report, teachers stated #edtech PD did not support their use of technology in the classroom? How can #edtech PD be designed to enhance teacher tech skills and their effective use? #satchat
Coaching and feedback! YES! I would also like to see less of having us determine why students are not growing to more REAL solutions from educators that have bridged that gap. If I knew what I was doing wrong or what I could do better, I would have already done that. #satchat
A1. PD should b content focused, job embedded, support collaboration, provides a clear vision of what the practice looks like, provides coaching & expert support and offer feedback & reflection.#satchat
A4 I like to start with a short getting to know you game and I end with giving e/one a chance to share any good news they have. I also provide candy, b/c who doesn’t like a treat?! It’s a bit like a morning meeting... but with candy! #satchat
A4: Just like in the classroom, participants should "participate" within the first couple of minutes. Ask a deep question and have learners share with one another or give them a challenging task to complete in groups. #satchat
A4: Since I’m a math T, I like to start out sessions w/a good “math fight” a task that creates discussion. It’ll tie in to the PD thatwe’re doing that day. #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
A3 tough question Scott - I think a model for ed tech learning development that scaffolds expertise is key- that begins w end in mind for S learning to drive adult learning shifts -#Satchat
A4- Take a page from communications specialists: Who is the audience? Starting PD with people who know one another and doing PD for strangers should dictate the engagement. When I teach, I start by asking two people to play together with toys.https://t.co/lNIeclT3wi#satchat
A3: It is imperative that teachers foster and support the #edtech standards. We have diverse learners who need technology at their fingertips. The only way we lead is by allowing students to take the drivers seat to explore, create, and apply. Trust is imperative. #satchat
A4: activity, activity, activity - get the participants involved and let them be part of the process of planning and creating (quizzes, games, breakout, surveys, ...)
#SatChat
I'm feeling tension here: Collaborative efforts encouraging learners to pull in common direction vs. downsides of expectation that one-size (one tool) fits all or most. Alternative: Tighter agreement about learning goal + looser expectations about various ways to pursue #satchat
A3: First, schools need a clear plan as to what the #EdTech focus will be. Is it Google Classroom, Schoology, Class Dojo, etc. Then attack it together...you can then move to other things with confidence. #satchat
A4 engaging provocations, maker hands on stuff, collaboration. In this case its allowing participants in an Inquiry workshop to discover concepts and dispositions they use from the lens of a learner https://t.co/2N7hQtTeQG#satchat
A4: Survey staff prior to event, make sure PD people know your district vision, talk with association reps for their input, and have a vision of the day(s). Allow Potluck Breakfast, Coffee, music, let staff dress down (no need to look “good” when putting in hard work) #satchat
A4: mindful reflection/goal setting helps bring purpose & a STEM challenge involving communication & a team effort can put a group in a mindset where they are ready to take risks, support each other, & think outside the 📦 #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
I get the desire to create an energetic atmosphere and do those bonding ice breakers, but if the PD is still crap why does the "fun" breaks/starts even matter ... #satchat
A4 some of the best I’ve been in are playing music before anything actually even starts - it sets a tone. I admit I’m going to be stalking this thread for more ideas #satchat
A4 - unpopular opinion -- I don't necessarily want the bells and whistles during PD...just give me an expert telling me how to make my classroom better. Then let me think about how I can apply the knowledge to my classroom. #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
I think: Start with what you have invested in. If a district has invested in G-Suite, then begin there. Admins should be using the methods for Google Classroom, for example, in their meetings. I try it at sub-meetings, and Ts ask a lot of "why" on my method. 😢#satchat
Sales pitch - I’ve never thought of it like that but that seems awkward. Maybe because it’s sometimes hard to get started - there are so many variables with tech and so many ways it could fail. Maybe teachers need quick wins with it to build confidence #satchat
Q2: when PD events are planned, check credentials of presenters. Several former teachers and administrators (even terminated ones) have become “consultants” selling PD without any work history to back it up.
Be sure they can walk their talk. Credibility matters. ✌🏼
#SatChat
A4. Stories//pictures/videos connect to the emotional parts of the brain & lead to connection. Words, data, articles typically fail to connect to personal significance. Make people laugh, feel, connect, talk through the work. They need to feel something positive. #satchat
A4 With our PD days, we like 2 start off w/ unplugged conversations. It reinforces relationships first! Topics: Can our Ss pass the 2-marshmallow test? How to encourage our Ss 2 B the ones who return the shopping carts? #satchat
A4: A memorable story might stick, but nothing beats doing something together right there on the spot. Being active and engaged in many can unite energies. It's important to have a meaningful experience attached to PD, because that's what learners will later recall. #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
My school is trying to differentiate- every Friday we’re getting options (which are voluntary but sorta not). I’ve been enjoying theory of knowledge and I’m not an IB teacher. #satchat@jennyktechin
My thoughts on PD...
- don't measure seat time. Wrong end.
- empower ppl w knowledge to share
- learn what you want, when you want... Consuming podcasts lets you do that.
Check out awesome podcasts on @EduPodNet#satchat
A3) the problem with #edtech PD is the same as the problem with any mediocre or bad learning experience for kids or adults: not specific to what the learner needs, not connected to previous learning, not relevant and/or not followed up on consistently.
#satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
A5 Online PD needs to be more than watching a video (although being able to re-watch is a nice benefit). There still needs to be time for participants to practice new skills, consider what they've learned, and apply it to their own classrooms. #satchat
Q5: Online and virtual PD have gained in popularity. What are the key aspects of this type of PD that make them effective, engaging, and worth an educator's time? #satchat
Q5: Online and virtual PD have gained in popularity. What are the key aspects of this type of PD that make them effective, engaging, and worth an educator's time? #satchat

A4: It’s gotta be Ultimate Rock Paper Scissors! I learned this from @MsMagiera at ISTE a few yrs ago and it has been my go to ever since! #satchat#4OCF
A4: I like using a good video and have a small discussion about why this particular video was used with the people around you. That way it is a low risk way of getting to know other educators at the same PD. Helps if the video is funny. #satchat
A3: Continued: Knowing that our students need the #edtech there has to be opportunities for staff to do the same. Blended Learning PD and teacher lead PD sessions are crucial in this process. Let teachers guide others through tech that they are implementing. #satchat
A4: Teachers need to know that they are appreciated for their tireless dedication & for their commitment to our kids! Start every session by recognizing them for who they are and what they do...and thank them for their willingness to be life-long learners! #satchat#gratefuledu
Yes! Music is a great way to get them hyped too. I often play Motown or 80's pop. They would dance and sing as they came in. Lots of smiles. Oh, and chocolate helps too. :) #satchat
A3. We gamified PD based on ISTE standards by creating a Grove Board. Teacher completes on activity in each column and they submit their board with evidence to win fabulous prizes ($5DD gift cards, classroom supplies, etc..) #satchat
A2 Each faculty meeting aims for 10 min of need-to-know business for upcoming dates/deadlines, then 40-50 min of themed PD. For example, Homework (How much is too much?) & Intrinsic Motivation, Feedback & Evaluation, Character Development & Emotional Intelligence, etc. #satchat
A5: Time is so important. Virtual PD and resources need to be short and to the point. They need to show Ts how to use the strategy in the classroom #SatChat
A4. It’s important that everyone sees the connection within their current work. We need to understand that this is not an add on, but something that supports our strategic plan, board learning plan and school learning plan. Knowing the “WHY” is critical to engagement. #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat
Q4 Resource: https://t.co/TfbUvsZl34
A1: grade level meetings with teachers from other schools within our district. Meetings once a month to collaborate and share ideas and strategies #satchat
You make a valid point. We are all different. Just like kids, we don’t all want to be taught in the same way. Perhaps a menu of PD options would be ideal if possible... #satchat
A5: Online and virtual PD can offer flexible scheduling on topics that may not be included in traditional local PD offerings. It can also offer an organized and convenient way to go back and review resources later #satchat
A4 We start PD by avoiding sage on stage route. Having discussions with seats in a circle. People will learn more by both talking & listening (Just like our Ss!) #satchat
A4: Richard Byrne @rmbyrne has tutorial here to create a Jeopardy-style Game in Google Slides https://t.co/hFPkSxPNsY
A good way to engage participants in the beginning of professional learning sessions #edtech#satchat
For sure. I appreciate getting down to it as well. Ive been to so many workshops.....I appreciate workshop leaders telling me what Im going to get out of a task..and reflecting on it, how and why its useful. Then its more enjoyable. #satchat
A5. Studies say Learning is Social. I think connection and collaboration around the reading is important. It's when I am participating in a chat group or Twitter feed around the topic that I grow the most. I have a small online PLC where we do this often #satchat
Q5: Online and virtual PD have gained in popularity. What are the key aspects of this type of PD that make them effective, engaging, and worth an educator's time? #satchat
A4: The best PDs that I have been apart of mirror the teaching and learning framework for best practice. It begins with a hook, i.e. minute to win it challenge that relates content or initiative for the day. Starts the communication process. Gives staff high energy. #satchat
A5: I WANT IT! I need it! And I need it now. I love a webinar but I prefer short. If I see 1:01 hours, I ponder. Anything over an hour is too much. I look for 15 minutes, max. Also: Series of lessons Blog attached. Social media connections to speaker. Products available. #satchat
Q5: Online and virtual PD have gained in popularity. What are the key aspects of this type of PD that make them effective, engaging, and worth an educator's time? #satchat
Q5 Resource: Read the Edutopia article Can PD be Virtual? https://t.co/p0EvTcl2Ko
A5 a clear demonstration of online is a great hook. I attended a training session in Arkansas via Guernsey, UK via Google hangout. It went down really well because the training was about using hangout in the classroom. #SatChat
A5 We have to be careful with virtual PD. Our ind PD started out as Google classroom modules that Ts could choose from. They liked it to some degree, but felt isolated. We're now moving towards group choices - Ts use the online info as a resource. #satchat
A5) #satchat is a form of online/virtual PD. Many of us are learning this morning from across the country in many different ways. Those that can’t make it and follow the # and learn when time is available. Adds personalization!
A5: Yes, because you can surround yourself with folks who are striving to get better and have similar values and attitudes towards education as yourself. This does tend to mean that people don't disagree or dissent as much though! #satchat
A5: I'm really liking this from @ClassTechTips@edutopia so far: "Virtual PD, when combined with face-to-face PD, is an option that's gaining traction thanks to the growth of the education technology sector." I'm a HUGE fan of the hybrid model, learning online AND F2F. #satchat
Teachers also need it to be relevant. Sometimes districts purchase tech products teachers never asked for and sometimes districts never purchase the tech products teachers are always asking for.
A5 I agree - I like how I can engage and learn from others in a twitter chat and share ideas and get feedback- it’s also highly reflective in nature which helps me self direct #satchat
A4: Hooks like authentic connections to the content being covered, humor & engaging icebreakers that involve movement. Also, utilizing a flipped classroom approach for PD / meetings / workshops. This removes any tensions over new or unfamiliar jargon / systems / content.#satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat

A4: Richard Byrne @rmbyrne has tutorial here to create a Jeopardy-style Game in Google Slides https://t.co/hFPkSxPNsY
A good way to engage participants in the beginning of professional learning sessions #edtech#satchat
Saw this in action at one of Rich’s sessions - a great way to get people up, engaged, and knowing a few new names/faces before the session starts! #satchat
A4: It’s gotta be Ultimate Rock Paper Scissors! I learned this from @MsMagiera at ISTE a few yrs ago and it has been my go to ever since! #satchat#4OCF
A5 It is all about the way in which the online is designed. If done correctly, online can be engaging and allow educators to access the PD 24/7. #Satchat
A5: I believe virtual PD can be appealing because the learning can happen at any place or time; however, I'm not confident this approach is effective for truly transformational learning. #satchat
A4: The best PDs that I have been apart of mirror the teaching and learning framework for best practice. It begins with a hook, i.e. minute to win it challenge that relates content or initiative for the day. Starts the communication process. Gives staff high energy. #satchat
A4 I'm fan of perplexity as described by @ddmeyer: potentially pleasant feeling of queasiness that comes from identifying unresolved problem that's a puzzle worth facing. Then, focus session on facing it. Inquiry as escape room of the mind :) #satchat
Food, family focus, and something funny. Teachers need to feel relaxed and motivated to engage, and ready to roll up their sleeves and learn with each other. #satchat
Q4: A key to a successful professional development session is a good and engaging start. What are creative, engaging & fun ways to start a PD session with educators? #satchat

#SatChat A5: @BlackRocketLLC trains all of their staff virtually. Their instructional videos are very explicit and can help non tech teachers learn how to use different tech in their teaching. I've taught their tech camps for the last three summers!
I am very excited for you and your colleagues! Watch the impact over time! I’ve been at this for over 28 years and I have witnessed what a difference this approach to professional learning can have on a staff! 😊👍 #BASDpride#satchat
Started my @GoogleForEdu training this evening, but was quickly distracted by the #satchat going on! Intriguing discussions happening about how to optimize PD for educators
A5 What makes these effective are that you can do them on your time in your space. It’s important that they have an interactive aspect and it’s not just s/one reading me something I can do myself! #satchat
For sure. I appreciate getting down to it as well. Ive been to so many workshops.....I appreciate workshop leaders telling me what Im going to get out of a task..and reflecting on it, how and why its useful. Then its more enjoyable. #satchat
@ReWireYou - last night we stopped registration. People who register today and near future will be put on a waitlist and notified of an opening if it comes about. Does hurt to try #satchat
A5 For me, I don’t have to use a sick day to participate. Not to mention, the convenience of having it online means I don’t have to travel. Both reasons are huge for me!
Online learning is convenient, but it still needs to be good ... it should be more than read this and post here... respond to another student's post #satchat
A5: I like online and virtual PD because I get to make it fit into my schedule. It also allows me to learn from teachers that aren’t based on location. #satchat
A3 Tech Dept observes teachers and asks teachers about specific needs. Tech-savvy teachers run PD for others who would like to implement specific tech for specific types of lessons and help troubleshoot. #satchat
A4: Teachers need to know that they are appreciated for their tireless dedication & for their commitment to our kids! Start every session by recognizing them for who they are and what they do...and thank them for their willingness to be life-long learners! #satchat#gratefuledu
A5. It’s important to know what are the needs of the staff so virtual PD can be effective. Also to have teachers modeling or leading it is essential. #satchat
Q5: Online and virtual PD have gained in popularity. What are the key aspects of this type of PD that make them effective, engaging, and worth an educator's time? #satchat
A5) key to Success mentioned by the author is building a relationship with teachers irl before working with them through a screen. Relationships are critical, even with virtual. #satchat
Like: "Hey hey hey... we need to sit down and be quiet..."
or
"Good morning, I'll try to make this quick b/c there are lots of other things you'd rather be doing but we have to get through this.." #satchat
Well-said, @KelleyKolpitcke. Where I wrestle with webinars is that they're usually 2-3 people yelling an incredible amount of info for an hour with no processing time, interaction, and little-to-no doing/applying time. Once the webinar is over, much info is forgotten. #satchat
A5: I also love having the option to do virtual in the summer! It does not feel like work to me. It's engaging and NOT boring. If you choose correctly, that is! #satchat
A5. The clear advantages of online PD are the availability of the world's leading experts/presenters in your field, delivered on your own timeline for learning, 24 hours a day and available to you anywhere you are at a reasonable price. #satchat
Q5: Online PD has been a game changer for me. Because of the endless choices that are available. I think that same ideal needs to be fostered and applied to on site PD. There has to be choice from a series of sessions that will directly benefit educators at their pace. #satchat
A5: online learning is great when it is optional. I am motivated to participate and engaged. Mandated PD I see Ts using as more of background “noise” to check the box. I love that I can be engaged in #satchat and getting breakfast for my family at the same time!
My problem is that I am in forever learning mode ... always trying to suck up new knowledge from anywhere I can ... then I sit in a PD covering something I learned about/used/moved on from a year ago ... #satchat
A5. I loved the online course a teacher and I took together from UW decades ago about community development. We had a terrific time learning together! #satchat
A5. I think it's powerful because there's so many people at different roles in edu, with different ideas, viewpoints, experiences...That can be brought back to my school setting #satchat
A5 We did a twitter book chat with @burgessdave on #TLAP. It also brought in many more voices than or own. Let the staff see the power of social media. #satchat
A4: traditional icebreakers are a no-go. Either do an activity that can be transferred to the classroom or just start with some reflective questioning activities. Once I began a session on differentiation by showing Ts this and asking them to read it.
#satchat

Right? I prefer one person. I like screencasts as well as their voice or face. I like follow up resources to use. I LOVE if it's connect to products I can use in the classroom. And practicality. Shouting and talking over...a big NO! 🤪#satchat
Well-said, @KelleyKolpitcke. Where I wrestle with webinars is that they're usually 2-3 people yelling an incredible amount of info for an hour with no processing time, interaction, and little-to-no doing/applying time. Once the webinar is over, much info is forgotten. #satchat
A5: We have 1 of the best facilitators around. Some ways he's made online PDs effective: 1) ask authentic, interesting questions 2) practical exercises
2) other teammates manage the chat window, responding immediately to q's, sharing specific examples, link to resources #satchat
No doubt -teachers learning from teachers and principals learning from principals is the way to go. It’s not just “show me what to do” but “show me how someone who does MY job is doing it.” #satchat
I agree, @DennisDill. Online PD needs to integrate interaction, processing time, and maybe even an opportunity to apply something from what we JUST learned, as well an assignment for the future to demonstrate an prove that what we learned matters and is meaningful. #satchat
A5: Here are some key elements of effective PD...virtual OR face-to-face. Shouldn’t this be the reality for any form of professional learning? #satchat
A3: teacher CPD should be easily generalizable (retrieval practice/spaced repetition, like Quizlet) or subject specific assure that teachers can apply the CPD
#satchat#edtech
Online learning is good for training because you can share information to a large group of people and ensure they are all getting the same training. It is a challenge in most cases for ENGAGEMENT which honestly marks good professional development (IMO) #satchat
A1: We stress the importance of quick formative assessment/feedback/student choice to determine what needs to be taught for our Ss. People designing the PD need to do the same and survey their learners in ADVANCE so everyone walks away professionally developed. #satchat#edchat
A5 Virtual PD let's staff learn where and when they want. Also gives them choices @CharmaynePolen has started using micro credentials with her staff. pick up skills that will benefit the teacher and students. #satchat
I agree - autonomy and efficacy come naturally from sharing professional values and goals in a learning community / professionalism must be grounded in a willingness to make changes that lead to the organizational outcomes - #satchat
A5: Virtual PD needs to have asynchronous options so teachers can access on their own time. Embedded assessments and tie ins can ensure closure and accountability. There also should be some sort of credit/time offered for units of online PD, e.g. badges, CTLE, etc. #satchat
We are trying micro-credentialing this year, but I am building in some collaborative opportunities so that participants have the social side so needed in learning that lasts #satchat
A5. The article mentions online learning which can be perfect for a small group of educators who want to learn together about a topic without having the entire school/district head that direction. FIRST identify goals and research! #satchat
Q6: Personalized learning, EdCamps & CoffeeEdu's are a central part of the future of PD. Describe how this type of PD can happen and take root to personalize educator learning. #satchat
A5: Substantial tasks, engaging people, people who participate, and a platform that is versatile, like @zoom_us b/c I can almost interact w/ my@peers as if I’m there in person. #satchat
Q6: Personalized learning, EdCamps & CoffeeEdu's are a central part of the future of PD. Describe how these types of PD can happen and take root to personalize educator learning. #satchat
Q6 Resource: Read How Teachers are Learning: PD Remix: https://t.co/TghnDX7V0Y
A5 Asynchronous allows for viewing without missing class. Allows for revisiting information and rewinding. Post PD follow-up through chats, etc... Brings GREAT speakers and high quality educators to places that may not always be able to afford it. #satchat
A5 Meta moment: This Q's combo of article w/backchannel via #satchat permits learners to proceed at different rates from disparate locales. Tweet-based convo may prove shallow or disjointed, so transcript could be revisited in smaller f2f groups for greater depth/cohesiveness.
Thank you! Already Ts are grateful to have professional discussions with our newly implemented #Eureka#math. It is our second and I #getit 😁 thank you Mike Stoudt #BASDpride#satchat
A5: I think it’s helpful because the myriad ideas that you see/explore/receive through online PD you can quickly dive further into. At the very least you start thinking about how it can apply for you as an educator. #satchat
A5) I use Tweetdeck and view streams from #googleedu, @wevideo and #njed. I will check these out several times a day and this keeps me up to date with ideas and new tools. The smartest person in the room is the room and Tweetdeck is my daily room I visit every day. #satchat
I’ve never really found ‘gimmicks’ to be all that helpful...teachers want to know what they do is appreciated by others...that gets their attention! 😊 #satchat
A5 (cont). That being said, I wholeheartedly believe that for educators, building and reading through a quality PLN on Twitter daily is, by far the best PD available anywhere. And it is 100% free. EVERY great educator in any content area is here to connect with you. #satchat
A5: I'm old enough to have experienced the isolation of rural teaching, where PD with a community of purpose was at best biannual. Social networking rescued my professional practice through email, communities (Blackboard, Ning), Skype, etc. #satchat
A4 Fun videos that show teachers and students interacting in (+) way help start meetings on a strong note. Our music teachers led us in song to this one: https://t.co/9cYxdntDsj#satchat
Chats are certainly engaging, resources to explore later abound in the feed, but do ideas expressed here translate into better classroom experiences? I would be interested in knowing that answer. #satchat
In reply to
@danieldmccabe, @ToddWhitaker, @wkrakower, @ScottRRocco, @TheBradCurrie
Teachers want to be good. They will embrace PD if they think it will help them improve. If they don’t, though, they will hate it. And probably be mad at whoever is making them do it. #satchat
Virtual PD must have the same features of meaningful live PD to be engaging & effective.
Fink’s Self-Directed Guide to Designing Courses for Significant Learning & UDL principles are my favorite resources
#satchathttps://t.co/sOK8WCxDcGhttps://t.co/nFTAUS1NuG
Q5: Online and virtual PD have gained in popularity. What are the key aspects of this type of PD that make them effective, engaging, and worth an educator's time? #satchat
Q5 Resource: Read the Edutopia article Can PD be Virtual? https://t.co/p0EvTcl2Ko
YES! @geekyteach and I start one of STEAM session with giving everyone, popsicle sticks, rubber bands, a spoon, and marshmallows! Everyone needs to figure out how to make a catapult! #Satchat
When I was an instructional coach, once had a Principal announce over the loudspeaker, “that mandatory training that you have to go to is about to start in the Cafeteria led by Rich.” Great. Thanks. Not a way to start! #4OCF#satchat
I agree on all of this, and yet I still think the golden ticket would be opportunities for meaningful interaction and application right there on the spot, even beyond Q/A. Example: Here's my template, create something in the next 10 minutes and share it to our hashtag." #satchat
A5: Why is PD only for educators? How can we implement PD at the student level where they receive the essential skills they need to be successful students, collaborators, leaders? Instead of no school, can we have PD offered for both teachers and students? #satchat
A5: As stated before- “I only need to do my required 100 hrs per year PD” says a lot about the individual. Learning is ongoing and could exceed countless hours... #NoExcuses#NoFixedMindsets#satchat
I agree - autonomy and efficacy come naturally from sharing professional values and goals in a learning community / professionalism must be grounded in a willingness to make changes that lead to the organizational outcomes - #satchat
We started offering online PD this year and I like the flexibility of when it takes place. A few people and I did Learning Walks-seeing the inquiry based instruction and literature circles in classrooms. #Satchat
I will say this; if you are trying to build a campus culture, and build trust among staff; there are team builders and icebreakers that could be great. For example; breaking up into groups of five: design the perfect 10 week course on a topic of your choosing #satchat
Totally agree with this. I'm not a huge icebreaker fan. Show me why we are here. Some of these suggestions here I wouldn't be too thrilled with! (design challenge, music, rock paper scissors challenge) #satchat
A6: Personalized learning, edcamps, & coffeeedu benefit from a grassroots approach of by educators for educators. The topics are relevant and offer variety to personalize PD for diverse attendees. The informal nature also may appeal to some over formal PD #satchat
A7: Anyone can start one! That is what I love about them. Having said that, I have NOT started one...yet. In my area, I still feel most are talking about things I already do. But they are amazing at building relationships with virtual PLN's when you can meet up!
YES! @geekyteach and I start one of STEAM session with giving everyone, popsicle sticks, rubber bands, a spoon, and marshmallows! Everyone needs to figure out how to make a catapult! #Satchat
A6: EdCamps are great for personal choice in learning but require a lot of organization from passionate educators and support from senior administrators. It’s important for T’s to not over-book during EdCamps and allow time for reflection and debriefing between sessions #satchat
This is exactly what we tell each other as fellow educators NOT to do in our learning spaces. Much more, webinars usually find me after dinner hours, after kids are down, where I'm nearly drained from the day and my processing might take extra grit. #satchat
A6: There is nothing more powerful than giving educators choice in PD sessions. Edcamps are awesome! Encourage and reward staff members who are willing to take a risk sharing their talent/expertise with colleagues. A PLC results! #satchat
A6 First and foremost, the admin of the school or district must participate in the learning. If they don't model the expectation, it won't catch on for all. #satchat
Q6: Personalized learning, EdCamps & CoffeeEdu's are a central part of the future of PD. Describe how these types of PD can happen and take root to personalize educator learning. #satchat

A6. At #BookCampPD our weekly chats are extended by resources on the website. Here are the upcoming books https://t.co/bcIF6eE8r3 that were selected by the #PLN = voice and choice. Please consider dropping in on a Sun PM 7:30 EST #satchat
A5: price and convenience male virtual PD popular, but even with video chat functions they will lack what physical PD can offer. As long as that is acknowledged, virtual PD can be great (see #satchat and others on Twitter!)
#satchat
A6: There is something about being with a group of people that feel like you do about education that just helps reenergize you. Creating the “choice”of what you want to talk about is a big draw for Ts also #satchat
I agree and depends on how the virtual PD is set up. If it traditional "sit and get" PD set in a virtual world it's not worth it. But if the PD is set up correctly it could have huge impact #satchat
A5: I believe virtual PD can be appealing because the learning can happen at any place or time; however, I'm not confident this approach is effective for truly transformational learning. #satchat
A6: Participants have to be willing to actively participate in the discussions and learning. If they are just there to fill a seat or requirement, it will not be effective. #satchat
A6. Must have educators who want to learn and grow - this type of PD allows personalization as it takes you from where you are and move forward. This happens anytime, anywhere due to SM #satchat
Q6: Personalized learning, EdCamps & CoffeeEdu's are a central part of the future of PD. Describe how this type of PD can happen and take root to personalize educator learning. #satchat
Yes. If people knew what a # was. And I am not kidding. 🙄#satchat So they do it, but they don't apply it. And they don't understand what they are doing. They just copy from you and then get out of the PD to get home. 😢
I agree on all of this, and yet I still think the golden ticket would be opportunities for meaningful interaction and application right there on the spot, even beyond Q/A. Example: Here's my template, create something in the next 10 minutes and share it to our hashtag." #satchat
A6 - These 'new' types of PD can be fruitful...my main worry is the vetting of information being presented. I know there are many well meaning edcamps out there still proliferating the learning styles myth. #satchat
Yes! Was really setting me up for success with staff! Luckily I worked in ten buildings at the time, and had a chance to learn from all ten principals who took very different approaches to my role with PD! #satchat#4OCF
Have to leave early from this amazing conversation. But thank you to our amazing #PLN for another awesom #Sathchat. Thank you to my co-moderator and co-founder of #Satchat@ScottRRocco for making the awesome graphics!
I'm cranky, I get that, but if we want to be called professionals, we need to act like it.
A big part of that is individualized personal professional development--know what you need, find it, practice it. Even when no one is handing out hours or credits or cookies.
#satchat
A6) EdCamps have been a huge addition to my growth as leader! It is personalized, learner driven, and individuals are passionate about what is taking place! Edcamps can be started by anyone almost at any time. Organizations have been developed to assist in the process. #satchat
Q6: These types of PD focus on interest, readiness, and motivation of each individual educator. That is why it is successful. It is the opposite of one size fits all or sit and get. This is how I try to run my classroom too. #satchat
A6: Using lists in Twitter allows me to organize my #PLN into different PLCs. Also Tweet Deck & IFTT allows me to filer, absorb, and push out appropriate out content that I find useful & benefitcal as an educator. #satchat

Q6 Resource: Read How Teachers are Learning: PD Remix: https://t.co/TghnDX7V0Y
Yea! I started a YouTube channel where I do screencasts on digital tools my Ts want to use. Helps take the pressure off them of getting to know in a large group setting! #SatChat
A3: A lot of #edtech focuses on the TOOL & is taught to the whole group. We need to facilitate collaboration where Ts learn a tool together in a job alikes session where they can share ideas for integration. Ts need to leave #edtechPD with IDEAS and not tools. #edchat#satchat
A4: I like to know the purpose/focus/target of the session. After that, if the info is relevant, the session is successful. I don’t need a song and dance—respect my time. I’m also not 6—treat me like a professional. #satchat
A6: Work alongside staff as an educator, not as their boss, just like an edcamp setting. Empower staff the opportunity to create something they’ve always wanted. #satchat#trust#respect#autonomy#WeB4Me
While whole group instruction to 20-35 students for an entire period might be easiest for teachers, it often times isn't best for students. This issue will focus on some strategies and sites to help you with breaking it up! https://t.co/9fsRIrso3g#satchat#miched
A5 Well-made online/virtual PD are great for at-home enrichment, but they are not for everyone. Departmental recommendations are best, and they should be optional as interest and time allow. #satchat
A6: I think choice is really powerful for PD, but my worry is that by only doing choice style PD we lose a central guiding focus as educators. Not sure if that is expressed well. #satchat
A6: We are hosting an @edcampsport in October, but I think the power of learning and follow up through Learning Walks(teachers visiting teachers) is a must to support actual implementation. We shared our learning with ASCD NY https://t.co/BSSikPvZok? #Satchat
I agree on all of this, and yet I still think the golden ticket would be opportunities for meaningful interaction and application right there on the spot, even beyond Q/A. Example: Here's my template, create something in the next 10 minutes and share it to our hashtag." #satchat
Which is why I love the options of SUMMER! I just love long lazy days but engaged in something so meaningful to me and relevant. During the school year, I demand sleep too much! 😂#satchat
This is exactly what we tell each other as fellow educators NOT to do in our learning spaces. Much more, webinars usually find me after dinner hours, after kids are down, where I'm nearly drained from the day and my processing might take extra grit. #satchat
A6. These often are attended by your first followers, your Ts that want change & growth. It empowers them! But, how do we leverage them for our more reluctant practioners? #satchat

The Coolest People I Know:
Do not respond to negativity
Do not speak poorly about others
Show up on time
Give without expecting a get
Are kind and humble
Do not nitpick or brag
Show gratitude
Have good manners
Make no excuses
Love random acts of kindness
#satchat#edchat
A4: to make PD engaging, ask about problems they experience in their work context (or their weaknesses as teachers) then work together to create a plan to solve/improve them.
#satchat
A6: Just look at what happens here every Saturday morning...grassroots, responding to educator needs, ‘listening’ and responding to each other, challenging thinking, welcoming the learning, celebrating together! #satchat

A6 I love edcamps but feel like they are being overused in some settings. I've even been to "PD sessions" where the topics were decided for us. That's not an edcamp. That's a predetermined roundtable. #satchat
I once wrote about CME done by UNC-Chapel Hill physicians. The school would fly specialists to parts of North Carolina to teach and treat in clinic sessions. Amazingly effective and a win-win for rural docs and patients. #satchat
A6. Our website has resources to help guide educators who would like to move forward with their own professional learning - here are some ideas https://t.co/vT4XVAvgL1 or book resources https://t.co/9CFlAawfNY#satchat
Online is good for sit and get, but I think interactive discussion, especially on education topics, is important because there are so many possible answers/solutions #satchat
Yes! And also... how many times can you “reflect,” knowing that it’s just for you and no one will read it? I had a whole training where I was just supposed to journal thoughts to boring info on @Penzu. That was rough, and it felt forced. #SatChat
That's the end of the chat
AWESOME... AWESOME... AWESOME chat today!
Thank you PLN for all the info, convo & collaboration
Next week's #satchat is unique. It's about gamification & we are gamifying #satchat w/ @MeehanEDU guest moderating. Game piece available later this week.
It all starts and ends with Leadership. Unfortunate we have many replicas of second rate leaders that learned what to do from poor mentors and previous experiences. Need leaders who are strong enough to be different, rise up, lose ego, and better for their staff! #satchat
A6: Teacher voice is crucial. You have experts for diverse topics in your building. Instead of one size fits all PD, have these classroom experts offer sessions for critical topics; relationships, feedback, etc. Let teachers pick what they need. #satchat
A6: Using lists in Twitter allows me to organize my #PLN into different PLCs. Also, TweetDeck & #IFTTT allows me to filter, absorb, & push out appropriate out content that I find useful & beneficial as an educator. #satchat

A6: What I especially appreciate about #coffeeedu and #edcamps is that they're a hybrid model (my favorite) of F2F to establish personal connection on the spot, resulting in long-term learning opportunities together in the future. #satchathttps://t.co/rpEgPmUoNg
At every conference, unconference, or education event where you have a nametag--Just make it your twitter handle. It saves time during introductions & establishes long-term connections to keep the relationships, learning, and growing going after the F2F experience. #EdcampWake

A6: It comes down to building a culture of learning, allowing teachers to try new things (and not be afraid to do so). Principals and administrators allowing the time and space for some lessons to fail. #satchat
A6. I think it starts with offering and inviting an opportunity...(Saturday for coffee to talk abt a topic/learn) With invite and opportunity, many start "joining in and following" #satchat
A6 In-house EdCamps have been great when they happen. Teachers loved self-identification of needs and collaboration about specific books/topics. #satchat

#satchat A6: Edcamps are awesome! I hope they stick around and aren't just another education fad that comes and goes. These types of PDs can be much more engaging.
A6 Choice, choice, choice! There are things we need to know. Researched based, child-centered, and engaging. It doesn't always have to be in a formal setting. Encourage Ts to find their Choice by sharing as many opportunities as possible.#satchat#satchat
A6: ultimately it comes down to educators taking responsibility for their own learning. These types of PD sessions allow for those invested to engage with other passionate educators about topics that are relevant to them. 🔑= Taking it back to Ss the next day! #satchat#4OCF
The problem is districts provide the 20 per year. Perhaps if districts only provided 10 and it was up to Ts to go out and learn and find those opportunities it would be more valuable.
Plus...anybody know what happens if you don't reach the mark? #satchat#njed

A6: Personal choice is fantastic—not only the choice to pick the area of focus, but also the choice to walk away from PD that is not applicable/helpful/relevant. Too often PD becomes a checkbox of “completed for this year” #satchat
Thanks @KentPolen ... just so happened that #satchat was going down the same time I send out my weekly support newletter to my district!
Hope its helpful!
Love everyone! Have a blessed and happy Saturday! It's a great day in Boise. Sunny. Warm. Heading out to XC Bob Firman Invitational! You all are amazing and remember...you matter! #satchat
A6: a plus-People attend and take away what they can use; I become concerned w/ content based discussions b/c who is there to vet the info? And I’m mostly thinking of math. How do we avoid a TpT sharing in place of actually understanding the math to be taught? #satchat
Q6: Personalized learning, EdCamps & CoffeeEdu's are a central part of the future of PD. Describe how this type of PD can happen and take root to personalize educator learning. #satchat
Personalized learning can be accomplished thru a variety of strategies, inc:
1) Id Individual learning style via assessment & develop lessons based on learner preferences
2) Choice of assessment methods
3) Opportunity to give & receive peer feedback
4) Reflection
#satchat

That's a great point/question: maybe by encouraging Ts to spread the word about their great learning throughout the PD on social media, those not in attendance will hear about it and that might plant a seed to start conversation rolling towards change/growth for all? #satchat
A6 Rich, varied learning menus -- offering topics as well as modes -- permit organizational prioritizing while fostering flexible differentiation. See grassroot fruits of crowd-sourced #edcamplongmont session board from last week: https://t.co/fKXP3mV65s#satchat
