#Edchat is a hashtag, a movement—it is a weekly organized Twitter discussion of educators and people interested in education that meet virtually from all over the world. #Edchat serves as a conversation thread on Twitter and is also used for organized weekly discussions.
How do you know if your lesson made an impact on students?
Did it:
Inspire them to act?
To create?
To share their voice?
To make a difference?

Time to discuss: If student voice is so important in education what involvement do your students have in the decisions about their own education? #Edchat
I've always wanted to connect stuff with red string! Ss all pickes different primary sources from a "mystery box." After doing individual research we worked as a class to find connections like pieces of a puzzle. Great way to visualize! #sschat#tlap#sstlap#edchat
Student voice is EVERYTHING at @teamAnastasis. Step 1: helping them find their authentic voice. Step 2: create environment where they can safely use their voice (build safe community). Step 3: inquiry where they can use it! #edchat
I think inquiry is so conducive to allowing student voice and agency because students become their own differentiators and it offers freedom with enough creative constraints to be productive. #edchat
Today @nickwanninger and I are announcing Beanz! — Helping teachers eliminate out-of-pocket spending on classroom reading materials. Check out our full introduction: https://t.co/D2dmzH8tr9
S voice is incredibly powerful IF we seriously LISTEN to what they say. Why? Because voice tells us if we r going in the right direction. Their voice is also reflected in body language. R the S puzzled? Do their Q indicate I should have explained a point more effectively. #Edchat
Time to discuss: If student voice is so important in education what involvement do your students have in the decisions about their own education? #Edchat
Quick brain breaks truly help our focus, stamina, and energy! This quick shake out takes just a few seconds as we get ready for our next class. ✨#brainbreak#edchat#backtoschool
Student voice is also a "gift" to educators if we pay attention (LISTEN/HEAR) to what they are saying. Their voice enables teachers to modify, tweak lessons, which means every lesson is unique, and fresh. Their voice brings excitement to each class! #Edchat
Time to discuss: If student voice is so important in education what involvement do your students have in the decisions about their own education? #Edchat
Also think it's crucial to give students language to help them reflect and emply metacognition on their own learning journey. Part of having authentic voice in the classroom is participating in the judgement of learning. #edchat
Provide students a chance to demonstrate how they will show mastery. Helps them learn to set goals. Also helps them learn to collaborate with authority figures if we mutually agreed on. #edchat
It seems like student voice is closely related to freedom in learning and guiding students in how they can properly manage the freedom they've been given. #edchat
Our reality is enriched (beyond theory) with student voice because student input strengthens ("fixes"??) the curriculum and creates a balance between subject centered classes and student centered. Great content "needs" students for relevancy. #Edchat
Good teachers introduce new thoughts.
Great teachers introduce new ways of thinking.
Good teachers care about their subjects.
Great teachers care about their students.
Good teachers teach us what they know.
Great teachers teach us how to learn.
#MondayMotivaton
Do they have an opportunity to create their own goals without input about what expectation you have? I've found that sometimes my learning goals end up limiting the learning that would have happened. #edchat
I write the vast majority of our grants based off what students ask for. They get a chance to research and see the overall process. Provides some real-world experience too. #edchat
Biology teachers. The only people on the planet cheering for cell division! Awesome group of dedicated teachers at our collaborative leading and planning session today! Hosted by @DwyerHS@PearsonPreK12@DianaFedderman@561Sdpbc
If you want critical analysis - voices to be heard - expect critical feedback. Students questioning what they're doing isn't an insult, it's a legitimate question that warrants answering. #edchat#restorehumanity
Student voice can greatly affect the culture of a school. Once it is supported it is difficult if not impossible to go back to a model of compliance. #Edchat
Texas school districts are turning away students requiring #sped in order to limit spending. Now, a mandate is ordering this to be undone. #edpolicy#edchathttps://t.co/8gLGIiApbU
How do we balance student voice with rich content, valuable curriculum? Is it possible to go overboard re: content or student voice? Overboard re: student-centered or teacher-centered? #edchat
Yes!! We hear this complaint from alumni who go from us to a traditional high school. They get super frustrated by lack of depth, connection, and ownership. #edchat
I ask students how a lesson went. Gives them a chance to practice feedback and gives me an opportunity to learn from them and both of us get a chance to reflect. #edchat
So, I hate to break it to you all. Unfortunately the only thing the typical student gets choice in at school (that matters to them) is their lunch. #edchat
On day 1 my students answer basic questions that will help us formulate the culture of the class. What have you enjoyed about your past English classes? What would you change and why? Etc. Then we will reflect as a class and move forward. #edchat
Here is our #Edchat Topic: If student voice is so important in education what involvement do your students have in the decisions about their own education?
The most important things about school are already decided: where, when, what, and most of the time how.
The question is, how much of that should we change and how much is necessary as a society?
#edchat
Balance is the key with so many things. Show them the objectives you must cover. They often come up with great projects/ways to prove to us the mastered them #edchat
Teachers, did you have fun today? If not, what are you going to do to make tomorrow different? Teaching is supposed to be fun! We really appreciate all you do and your heart for our kids! #edchat#education
What’s the first question we should be asking our kids after school? Did you have fun today? Next question...Did you (teachers) personally have fun today? If you didn’t then odds are high that your Ss didn’t either. Last question...Will you make tomorrow be different?
Today's #Edchat Topic: If student voice is so important in education what involvement do your students have in the decisions about their own education?
Student voice can greatly affect the culture of a school. Once it is supported it is difficult if not impossible to go back to a model of compliance. #Edchat
We have, as a society, decided these things. We have also decided that any learning that doesn't fit in to our curriculum has to be done by kids outside. (Of course it doesn't help that we fill their outside of school time with activities and homework.) #edchat
Public school was not made for kids to learn what they want, when they want, where they want, or how they want to learn it.
Is that ok? If yes, what is the problem? If no, how do you change the system?
#edchat
RT @chrisclinewcps I’ve posted this before. It’s a great reminder with the school year approaching- these are 5 questions we should all be asking ourselves every day #edchat#KidsDeserveIt#FailForward
Excellent point! Hopefully the effective techniques will "rub off" in the new settings. Michael Fullan labeled this strategy "lateral capacity building." It ain't easy!! #edchat
Yes!! We hear this complaint from alumni who go from us to a traditional high school. They get super frustrated by lack of depth, connection, and ownership. #edchat
"Student voice" is a buzzword ... we confuse "Options" with actual choice ... the voice of students is only heard if it fits into the parameters of the school/class #edchat
If you created your own school, would it be entirely skills based? Would you have no specific content that is absolutely necessary for all to learn? Would your idea scale to every kid in public schools?
This stuff is hella hard. We won't fix it here.
#edchat
If your school does not support #LGBT equality and #trans justice, but you promote or boast about having a social justice platform, then you’re a fraud. Activism and advocacy is never convenient. Check your policy. #TuesdayThoughts#edchat#educolor#education
I ask students how a lesson went. Gives them a chance to practice feedback and gives me an opportunity to learn from them and both of us get a chance to reflect. #edchat
Sometimes it's as easy as asking. I use #GAFE and specifically #GoogleForms to create surveys that I regularly have my students complete. I keep them anonymous so that students feel empowered to be as honest as possible. #edchat
Today's #Edchat Topic: If student voice is so important in education what involvement do your students have in the decisions about their own education?
Not sure that not having specific content is possible, however, I wonder if it's possible to adapt the way we teach those skills to provide multiple ways of reaching every child? #edchat
Places you'll see student voice at @TeamAnastasis: curriculum (no boxed it's co-created in inquiry), environment (designed based on who students are/needs. They choose where to work based on needs), assessment (about helping them reflect on their learning), culture.
#edchat
Self-confidence/positive self-talk is an important life skill. 4th/5th graders spent part of a beautiful morn outside writing positive things to themselves in a “mirror” to use whenever they need. 😍 #sel#myolatheschools#kstothemoon#selfconfidence#edchat
I think most teachers do a decent job of that. It becomes infinitely harder though, when the content seems arbitrary to the kids and adults (and that happens way too often) *cough-cough math*
#edchat
Yep. Change takes time. A great idea is not enough. We all have to understand that change is a process. Hey, maybe start with that lunch choice. (I would choose hot dogs and pizza each day--not a nutritious decision). #edchat
So, I hate to break it to you all. Unfortunately the only thing the typical student gets choice in at school (that matters to them) is their lunch. #edchat
It isn’t! The great thing is that the kids become great self advocates in the new space. Not always successful, but so proud of them every time they try! #edchat
Love seeing examples of districts thinking deliberately about their brands, ie stories. At end of the day, all districts are telling stories & most successful ones are actively/strategically telling theirs everyday thru wide array of channels/stakeholders. #edbranding#edchat
Indeed, but if we could leverage student interest and let them interact with things they like or connect with? #edchat Math is a known problem @Mathgarden has a great book on that.
We “learn” what we then want to buy or become from movies, TV, web sites, apps, etc. Same for how to communicate with others and behave towards others. #edchat
Balance is the key with so many things. Show them the objectives you must cover. They often come up with great projects/ways to prove to us the mastered them #edchat
Expressing empathy and meeting the students where they are does not mean we are lowering expectations. Rather we are scaffolding additional skills into meeting the same goal!
#mtedchat#k12#edchat
So, for you, how do you initiate change? Where do you begin? What strategies have worked for you? Margaret Mead said all change begins with just a few people...small groups. What do you think? #edchat
We have, as a society, decided these things. We have also decided that any learning that doesn't fit in to our curriculum has to be done by kids outside. (Of course it doesn't help that we fill their outside of school time with activities and homework.) #edchat
Keeneland Racetrack invites fifth-graders to participate in interactive tours designed to broaden their understanding of the historical, economic and cultural importance of the Thoroughbred industry in Kentucky https://t.co/Gk9UPz1F3b#5thchat#edchat#funlearning#learning
Inquiry is the way to go ... i do the best i can working through my mandated standards by getting kids to ask questions ... think beyond what is in front of the ... how would they do things differently ... how would they change that moment in history. #edchat
I am not sure that even that would work. I have a theory where I think schools have to be a)similar to each other in content and how it is run and b) consistent in that way with each generation.
#edchat
If you want to read about why media “learning” is more effective than what we do in school, see James Garvey’s The Persuaders. https://t.co/CBNo8L9Je5#edchat
It creates shared experiences that bind us together as a society that really cannot be done in any other way. Sure, it is a crappy way to do it, but I think that is why it has no real change momentum.
#edchat
Common library practice: denying students the ability to check-out books b/c of lost or overdue materials. How can this ever be equitable? Think about the challenges some of our students face. How can this be right by our most vulnerable students?
#tlchat#vsla#edchat#libchat
If you control the over-all context then the inquiry is more of a game though, isn't it? I mean, real inquiry starts with a question generated by the person doing the learning.
#edchat
Geeking out right now! I want to be in my son's #MNstudies class. Mrs. Meyer's class is based on perspective, primary sources... and a few random #socialstudies jokes. #mnlead#edchat
"A picture is worth a thousand words and our brain loves them. How good is your current strategy at taking advantage of this?" ~Eric Sheninger #LeaderEd#edchathttps://t.co/BMgki7hQhq
Everything falls within parameters ... my job is to teach US History in a manner that creates curiosity for my students. Not all of them will love History, but they will remember learning it in my class. #edchat
Yes. And what about the display cases in the schools? Do our displays reflect a balanced curriculum? Do our displays reflect diversity? Do our displays honor the work, accomplishments of all students? #edchat@ASCD
It is incredible to me that this isn't seen as an emergency. And not a "we need to teach the Supreme Court" emergency, but a much broader problem in what we value as a society. #sschat#hsgovchat#engchat#engsschat#civics#edchat
