A1: They guide our planning and resources used in the classroom.
Lemarr Treadwell, 4th Grade Teacher, Fresno, CA
Welcome Alysse! We're on Q1
A1: Our beliefs about student potential frame how we interact with that student. It's huge.
A1: sometimes our belief is all they have to rely on. Trust and empathy are strong traits to hold and share
A1: I believe in opportunities and growth, both of which strongly factor into potential.
A1: Our expectations influence our students! We have to believe they can surpass what we think is normal!
OMG...Jacki hosting too???? :)

So great to see you here!
YES! I am so excited! More than that is that I get to finally meet
A1: It defines how much we challenge each individual student. If we don't think they can do much, we don't challenge them.
you too!!! Hope you are having a great year!!
Wow! We've also got Bethany in the - epic!
Wow! We've also got Bethany in the - epic!
A1 Our students are astounding, astonishing learners. They are amazing. We should let them know every day.
A1 Beliefs beget actions. Ts can't fake true caring, enthusiasm, or commitment. The kids already know who really has their backs.
A1 for me it is what energizes me. We have to champion the children. If not us then who?
A1: Kids know whether or not you have faith in their ability and them as a person. It is a feeling and a vibe that we exude.
YEAH! Glad to see you, Jason! I'm ready for your next blog - bring it!
Our expecations resonate loud and clear even when we dont say them allow. We need high expectations for all, each & every S
A1: I've heard too many people say, "well, they're.....maybe it's too hard." That's total BS.
A1: They know. Our Ss know how we feel. We aren't great actors, we are great Ts. Believe in them. It matters.
A1 if I didn't believe there was potential then why teach? I have to believe in them bc a lot don't believe in themselves
Hi, Stacy! Glad you are here!
A1 Our students reach for the bar we set for them. Pre-conceived notions are a dangerous thing...
A1 Our belief about students sets the tone in our rooms and schools. It matters to the students. Each and every one.
A1. The moment we stop believing in our Ss = the moment we have failed at our job
Hey, Chris! Great to see you again!
Hi, everyone! Jodie - math teacher from Hilliard, OH. Excited to join tonight's chat!
wish I could be there! Best wishes friend!
A1 “One person expects of another can come to serve as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Pygmalion Effect.
I forgot...Shane, math teacher from the Cincinnati area
Love it! And, thanks for allowing me to co-write with you for - I am on cloud 9!
A1) Whether you believe or don't, you are right...
Our beliefs create the culture of our classroom! https://t.co/Ef9UmLbtUk
A1 Our belief about students sets the tone in our rooms and schools. It matters to the students. Each and every one.
Lori, curriculum supervisor
A1: Ss can perceive our perceptions and live up to those expectations; Ss must know that u know how much they can accomplish
Patrick Miller, West Holmes High School Math.
Hey! How could I resist when I logged in and saw your smiling face?
A1: B/c they know when we believe in them and when we're just going through the motions. If we don't believe, why should they?
So true!! https://t.co/Qa405rHiyF
A1: Kids know whether or not you have faith in their ability and them as a person. It is a feeling and a vibe that we exude.
YES! Great connection! This video does support the question - absolutely!
A1: There's too much self doubt & negativity our Ss are often faced with - we have to be the driving force that says "you can"
Hi all, I'm Meghan from PA. A highschool ELA teacher.
A1I believe all ss born creative. Some r encouraged & flourish, while others r not. We need 2 encourage ss innate creative mindset
A1: When we expect great things from ALL kids, we will have the ability impact. Their families need to know we believe as well.
Awwww, shucks! Alabama is my new favorite state!
A1) How many coaches won championships believing their players couldn't succeed?
A1: Believing in our Ss shows that at least one person does, they may not get the support elsewhere.
A1 Many Ss only hope is our dream for them to achieve! Our belief in their success should be the mantra they hear every day!
A1 Deeply wrestling with our beliefs is very important - for ourselves and for our students.
We were talking about this today in a meeting. https://t.co/KrNTBBfQXe
A1 “One person expects of another can come to serve as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Pygmalion Effect.
A1: b/c Ss listen to us, look up to us, respect us, & take what we say to heart. We need to believe in all Ss to support ALL Ss
Great quote for this question!
A1: Someone tells you everyday you're a ditch digger you eventually get a shovel & start digging. Believe in more.
what's up Shane! Glad you could be here! #513
all good, Shane! You are here now!
you bet! You need to be their champion!
They listen to everything we say & react to our actions!
A1-we must reflect on the messages we send to Ss. They are watching us! Our Messages Matter!!
A1: Our beliefs shape what we ask of Ss and what we expect from them.
YEAH! Great to see you, Lori! Where did you hide
Thank YOU for co-writing with me! Loved working with you. Very exciting, indeed!
One one hand it seems highly apparent that our beliefs matter.
Yet, have we written down our beliefs? Have we posted them?
***Q2 is coming up in 1 minute.
No problem big guy. I may start hosting every Sat morning at Clark Hall for weekly PD/networking
A1: We must believe in our Ss, encourage them to take risks & build their confidence. Small things make a difference in a Ss lives!
A1: Our belief in kids and what they are capable of doing is directly related to our WHY. We can't impact if we are misaligned.
I'm in awe at the folks on tonight! We are a powerful presence in their lives. a difference!
They say Coach Eric Taylor is up for the LSU job.
Thanks Neil, I just have to get through homecoming week and then its on! !
I was talking about a state with cool Edleaders like you and
The risks we choose to take in front of our students - for their sake - communicate what we believe. https://t.co/FnH0upNQtL
A1: We must believe in our Ss, encourage them to take risks & build their confidence. Small things make a difference in a Ss lives!
Be there for them and simply have an ear for them to talk to. So many kids need this but never get it.
A1 And so many of our perceptions are grounded in systems of oppression over centuries.
Maybe a blog on Surviving Homecoming!
I agree! They are watching us AND repeating us! https://t.co/oKvWwAhcRe
A1-we must reflect on the messages we send to Ss. They are watching us! Our Messages Matter!!
A1: Ss will always achieve at the level we as their teachers & adults believe possible... they can do so much more if we let them!
Sooooo true. https://t.co/2cKXIaQNiY
Be there for them and simply have an ear for them to talk to. So many kids need this but never get it.
A1 because so many good teachers see more potential than kids believe they have & help achieve more
A1- shares the importance of posting our beliefs in -take time to write down beliefs-gives your beliefs power
Expectations are key. If we can get Ss to expect success, it's a start https://t.co/erDPporNxo
A1: Our beliefs shape what we ask of Ss and what we expect from them.
Love this visual! Thanks for sharing!
A1: In some cases our belief is the ray of hope in a student's life.
A1 we believe in their potential because all students have the capacity to succeed. Ts need 2 provide learning space 4 whole child
So true. We impact Ss daily, even when we do not realize it! !
so true. I am about halfway through listening to Start With Why by on
There is no way one can 'fake' true caring! https://t.co/rn8a1VsQj5
A1 Beliefs beget actions. Ts can't fake true caring, enthusiasm, or commitment. The kids already know who really has their backs.
A1: We also need to show Ss parents/guardians that we believe in them. Make the phone call/email
A2) I tell them early and often. Clear communication is key!
A1: Listen to them. Give them a voice. Allow them to guide us. Be a part of our culture, own it. Teach us. https://t.co/4r1bxGvfDi
A2: I tell them, point-blank. Also keep focus on learning: 2nd, 3rd, even 4th chances if necessary. Let's LEARN.
No doubt. Small things mean a lot more to Ss than adults. Ss still sweat the small things https://t.co/CR7gZWuY8n
A1: We must believe in our Ss, encourage them to take risks & build their confidence. Small things make a difference in a Ss lives!
Fantastic book! MUST read for all educators. https://t.co/LnlSf8bgN5
so true. I am about halfway through listening to Start With Why by on
My dept. is talking about this a lot. The evidence of this is out there and real. So how do we combat it?
A1: too often Ts feel Ss fail because they don't try..if Ts believe in their potential they will gain trust from Ss.
A2: You care about them first.
Greg from Hilliard. Jumping in late.
So true! Have to bring out that "You've got this" attitude! https://t.co/JwcIoSOOWs
A1: Someone tells you everyday you're a ditch digger you eventually get a shovel & start digging. Believe in more.
I was hoping someone would take it there. I lightly did so...
Hi, friend! I am great! Hope all is well with you!
Hi! Kristi from Texas! Jumping in late!
A2 tell them, walk beside them on their journey, encourage, redirect as needed, support and be present
A2-We're training our Ss in R Factor this year. Each Fri we have an assembly-last slide each week says- "We believe in you!"
A2 Our beliefs...
our expectations...
how students view their potential...
It all intersects in our relationships.
A1: High expectation is the first thing that will help your student ticking. Everything else comes after that
A2 Tell them. Tell them again. Show them. Show them again and again.
A2 build T - Ss relationships built on trust
hahaha! Well, It's football season!
A2: You spend time with them and show a genuine interest in their passions, hopes, and dreams!
A2:the little things count..REAL conversations...listen and encourage.
one of my favorite Ted Talks
What a great answer https://t.co/k5DGzCvMLu
A1: They know. Our Ss know how we feel. We aren't great actors, we are great Ts. Believe in them. It matters.
A2: When struggling, Ss need to hear they may not know it YET, but I know they will. Be explicit, tell them directly!
A2: One of the most important things I do to let kids know I believe in them is to TELL THEM, and tell them often.
A2: Getting to know their interests, developing a strong rapport, & ultimately, helping them to establish goals for success.
A2: You show up in their school life. Talk to them in the halls. Be personal with them. Show them we are human.
I know what you mean..... O - H !
A2: tell them! Show off their work! Tell other Ts! Give them recognition and encourage them to explore on their own!
A2 When visiting building having convo with students to allow them to share their successes
A2: tell them, sit beside them & show them what they're doing well, celebrate and highlight, look at them and tell them your proud
A2: Specific praise. Tell students what it is in particular that you like about their writing, drawing or work.
A2-and they know you won't give up on them https://t.co/ttMg1uXehL
A2: I tell them, point-blank. Also keep focus on learning: 2nd, 3rd, even 4th chances if necessary. Let's LEARN.
A1 Not all Ss have someone who believe in them and it is imperative that we believe in their potential as that is all they have
A2: Slow down when I find myself getting frustrated. Thats usually when they need me to show them I care the most.
A2) I ask questions about life outside of class. They need to know I care about them as people.
A2 Encouragement, inclusion, attention, empathy &invitation tell Ss you are on their sides & know who they are. Sincere praise too
A2: Observe what they know or can do and push them just a little further. Vygotsky's ZPD is a nice model for this.
I agree. It's about our WHY - why do you go to work everyday? Some go for the wrong reasons https://t.co/eJrogF4bs9
A1: Our belief in kids and what they are capable of doing is directly related to our WHY. We can't impact if we are misaligned.
A2: You talk to them like people, give them choices. With that, you give them hope.
Great to see you - haven't seen you in a while! Hope all is well!
A2 asking my Ss about them. Their interests. Their dreams. Show Ss it's about more than the grade book.
A2. Ensure that I find a positive to give them everyday. No matter the behaviors displayed
A1: Even a simple 'wow' from you can go a long way in making a child bloom https://t.co/GamdrFoTWa
A1: We must believe in our Ss, encourage them to take risks & build their confidence. Small things make a difference in a Ss lives!
I build relationships first with all learners so they know they matter!
A2: in the words of , I'm present for them -- a couple T's from my school and I attend their after school events.
Arriving late - what's the topic??
A2: Build relationships with Ss. Get to know them and their interests. Build on their strengths.
Do you have a link that you'd recommend on the ZPD?
A2: you praise them & BE REAL with them! Give substantial feedback & quality advice while leading them with love & compassion!
Great message to build a growth mindset!
A2 invest, invest, invest. I'm building relationships with my teachers so that they trust what I'm saying. Support with compassion
Glad to finally be back again. New school, still in Masters, almost new child.
A2 The power of YET https://t.co/Ta2To6DTli
A2: When struggling, Ss need to hear they may not know it YET, but I know they will. Be explicit, tell them directly!
A2: Give kids opportunities to contribute and to lead. This speaks volumes.
A2 build those ever so important relationship with students. Get to know their dreams. Celebrate their growth throughout the year
I love the idea of showing off their work. There is not better endorsement for learning! https://t.co/8GbsqLLROV
A2: tell them! Show off their work! Tell other Ts! Give them recognition and encourage them to explore on their own!
A2: Listen to them. Tell them you believe in them and that they can do it!
A2 I traveled through many years of being a passionate educator without posting my beliefs on the wall, without telling the Ss.
A2 You celebrate their successes and be there when they struggle
Congrats! You got the trifecta!
John from the ILC. Just jumping in.
A2: if you want Ss to believe in themselves it is our place to believe in them 1st. Find their strengths and build on them
A2. Every Monday morning, we share our weekends with eachother. Very powerful!
"What Matters" - and are co-moderating
Not knowing something YET is fine! Give Ss the opportunity to SHINE -powerful words from
A2: Talk to them and show them they are important and noticed. No matter how small an accomplishment or big!
A2: By knowing when to bring the heat or the light. Either way, I support each student unconditionally.
YES! Relationships first. !
I have to remind myself to "Be a human" often. Connections and relationships are everything
Arriving late - what's the topic?
A2: Tell them what they need to hear wbut do it through pure kindness & desire 4 their success!
A2: I have personal conversations w/ them. Spoke w/ a Ss today & let him know "Real leaders create followers, be the model."
A2: Support them - be available when they need me, not just when it's convenient for me. They have to know they're a priority.
A2: Greet them in the mornings, call them by name, make eye contact...sends the message... "YOU MATTER".
A2 It's my 1st rule, and I am like the king of selfies. Take a selfie with a kid and you e… https://t.co/UScHwb4ha3
So true! https://t.co/fGlGTiGTL1
and how many players in championships don't believe in each other? To believe is to achieve!
A2: Hold them accountable, inspire, guide, more accountable, sprinkled with Coach Wooden-like pep talks...and robots
Our Messages Matter with as co-moderator. Welcome to
A2 Ss understand subtle more than overt; small stuff matters. Talk to Ss about sports, jobs, aspirations, desires! Listen more!
***Q3 is coming up in 1 minute.
A2 Prove to Ss through little acts that we care. They have had many people in their life say they care. Fewer have proved it.
Joining in progress.
Brian, HS principal from Mass.
Where have you been! Glad you are here, Brian!
Mark here from outside D.C. A2: I realy try to laugh with them. Show them Its ok to make mistakes, laugh, learn and move on
Small stuff is so important---we can also explicitly share our beliefs with them-powerful too! https://t.co/zhTTsk8owB
A2 Ss understand subtle more than overt; small stuff matters. Talk to Ss about sports, jobs, aspirations, desires! Listen more!
A2.2: listen to them and then be an advocate for their voice! Believe in not just their work, but their ideas! Believe in them!
A2: When I see kids outside of school, I try to go out of my way to notice them and their familiy, connect, etc.
A2: Work with your students as though they are your partners in learning than participants.
THIS! https://t.co/4CTPHtMMm7
I have to remind myself to "Be a human" often. Connections and relationships are everything
You know above all else, we need to SMILE !!
I really appreciate these insightful and caring answers!
that is true. They know they matter when you drop what you are doing to pay attention to their needs
what are some of your favorite little acts? I use sticky notes of encouragement!
A2: Every Monday we have a "family meeting". Share weekend stories, goals/events for the week. Have a success board too this year
spent time today in a PD talking about deficit vs asset-based thinking - makes a big difference
It's all about the students!
the belief that you will win & the positive talk that goes with that comes before the win. Criticism loses games!
The belief we have to punish black children so they can learn is evidenced in out of school discipline rates
always good to have B-Mac in the house! Welcome!
Show them you're a person, just like them. Love it! ! https://t.co/BmgaNefIdZ
Mark here from outside D.C. A2: I realy try to laugh with them. Show them Its ok to make mistakes, laugh, learn and move on
A2 I encourage ss 2 bring their life into content. I believe in you as a person, not just a ss. I let them have choice & ownership
We are. A lol of "G's" in G'town - great Ss, great Ts, great parents, great community
A2: I let Ss know that I am here to help them. That it's ok to need help or more time.
A1: this one is easy... I tell them! Real relationships = authentic concern
A2.1: be present. Be real. Be real present! Show up to events and activities!
absolutely! Glad it was applicable!
Thanks! I'll have to check this out!
A high-five and a fist bump go a long, long ways for many students! Celebrate together!
A3: Relationships are everything... If a child perceives a real valuable relationship, he/she is able to learn anything from you.
authentic and sincere... with kindness and knowledge of the students and their personalities... be cognizant.
A3: Relationships based on trust and care will melt fear, insecurity and doubt. That's when true potential can begin to shine.
A3 It's our chance to model how life is. Kids can begin to build their network so as they grow the know who to go to for support
sounds like a Lombardi quote!
A3: if Ss don't know me, they don't understand how I teach! If I don't know Ss, I don't know how they learn! Need relationships!
A3: if you don't have relationships you do not have the solid foundation on which to build bridges and sustain student success
A3 relationships period are important. invest in the value of another human being to empower that person 2 b their very best
Q3-Relationships are everything-but they have to be real and authentic-we have to be truly invested-Ss can tell
A3 We all want to do better for someone we have a + relationship with - S better for the T and T better for the S
A3: A good rapport can make a boring lecture or class all of a sudden seem interesting.
A3. Relationships are the foundation of what we do. Without them, we tinker with collapsible frameworks
A3: the relationship in the classroom may be the only positive relationship they have.
A2: Always start with askikg about them first. Give out 👊 and 🖑 Have Motivation Monday and Fun Fridays.
A3: when Ss feel valued they value what the teaching and learning Relationships bring value and connections last beyond a lesson
A2: Write students encouraging or affirming notes on postcards (Disney, Pixar.. ones w pictures that are colorful).
A3: Relationships are important everywhere! Ss feel valued and put forth more effort when they efforts are noticed & appreciated.
I heard a student say:
"If you care...we will care"
Powerful words.
Busy lives = disconnected lives. True and powerful interaction happen when we make a point of connecting and caring. Someone has 2
Oh boy! Now look what you started
A3: Relationships first. It can be the one thing that makes the impossible, possible. !
It is really enlightening to look for our hidden biases - we all have them, like it or not, but need to be aware of them
A3. When relationships are prioritized, good things are easier to achieve. Better instruction. Better learning. Better culture.
A3 relationships are everything. We need to be connected to have that sense of belonging. To feel like we matter.
A3: Teaching doesn't get very far without a good relationship! You see it all the time!
The first Big Idea I post on my wall was "Learning is about making connections." I learned it was describing relationships.
A3.2: once relationships are built, Ss will excel! They trust methods...they want to ask questions...they want to learn!
A3: The kind of learning that happens in my classroom depends on the kind of relationship I foster with my students
Not from OH... I'm from VA. Seemed like an interesting chat so figured I'd jump in.
A3: You must reach them before you can teach them. Connect, inspire, motivate, help them discover their genius.
yes! That's my life. And, worth every down, pass, serve, goal, song and tune (and more).
A3: It is what builds community. A sense of belonging is crucial for success.
So true! Ss can tell when it isn't authentic!
A3: I ensure students see pics of me and my family...let them know, positive relationships are ok/encouraged...it's ok to care.
A2: Tell them. Even when doing discipline Prove not holding it against in the ways I interact w/ the students in my next encounter
A3 Relationships are so important - for so many reasons - that I post those messages on the wall, point to them, read them often.
awesome! We use a boombox with music in the hallway!
A3: We are in a "people" business and every S comes to us with different backgrounds & experiences.
There is nothing wrong with black children that ending racism can't solve
A3: If there is connection/relationship/mutual respect and s's feel empowered, they will go above and beyond.
A3: adjust the topic, method, prioritizes the needs of the students- is this a good day to assess?
A3: We accomplish very little without relationships - they have to trust us first.
A3: today a S stopped me in the hall to tell me about her new couch. She was so excited to share that with me. How awesome is that?
I like to say:
"What is on my heart is posted on my wall."
A3: They lead to openness, trust and at the very least a small period of time that your student feels loved and can be themselves.
A3: How we run: when we know others care, we feel secure & are willing to risk more, do more, invest more.
A3 relationships build a safe space to learn and take risks. Ss need 2 know they can make mistakes and b supported.
I agree that the relationship is a foundation - we want those to be solid!
A3 I don't want to be quietly passionate. I want it to show through to my students all the time.
I think in the past, being teacher was enough. Ss respected the position. Now, they have to respect us as people 1st, teacher 2nd.
Too funny! I'm going to be keeping my eye on you!
A3: may have the "X's & O's" when it comes to content, but if Ss don't respect you & know you care, your knowledge is worthless
A3: Nobody wants to learn from people they do not trust or look up to!
We have good intentions but many of us just don't realize our underlying assumptions and stereotypes
catching up and got your message.
A3 "Every child needs a champion." Rita Pierson
today students face timed me to share they had won their sectional golf tourney & asked me to come watch them play fb

Absolutely - students can tell if you're faking it!
***Q4 is coming up in 1 minute.
I'm a firm believer that a student knows what kind of a day they will have in class before they enter the door
Healthy relationships in the classroom leads to personalised learning! https://t.co/iKNCe99R2I
There will be no long term educational impact without it! Learning has to be personalized for the student to succee… https://t.co/ZVZ2Q4J8Zc

It's scary to uncover and admit that we have biases and stereotype students and families
A3. Feeling wanted is important to us as humans. Relationships are power. People will do anything for people they care about
"Advise, don't criticize." Powerful! https://t.co/EiMG2zcbOb

At the elem. level... creating secret handshakes with Ss is my favorite. My room looks like an NBA pre-game warm up everyday.
I'm from MO and I crash this amazing chat almost every week!
But if we don't recognize our assumptions we can't ever truly believe all students can succeed
As a first year teacher, I've realized that relationships are classroom management.
and they'll call you on it, too!
A3 "Students buy into the teacher before they buy into the learning" I see positives DAILY ! So glad
A4: Starting with my Ss was a big risk. New strength: letting my Ss take a bigger lead in designing learning.
I may have just defined my coaching philosophy!!!
Q4 is my favorite question!
A4: Convinced co-teaching partners to infuse digital elements into our courses, we have connected much better with our S.
So true! We have to really dig deep sometimes in order to help us move forward.
I think teacher ed would be the first place to start

A4: Took a risk transferring to the HS level from ES! Love it! Best decision I've made. Connections w Ss are genuine!
A4: Going back to school to do an Indigenous Studies degree. I love learning and applying the learning to my classroom planning.
A4: went from teaching high school down to middle school! Never thought I'd teach there, but I wouldn't change it!
Nice going! I'm dabbling with that, too!
took a risk many times in expanding how I view education which has allowed me to learn & grow with students
A4 The lesson here is that it was never a risk at all. It was a change that had some unwarranted worry attached to it. Be brave.
A4-I took a risk 12 years ago when I trained to be a literacy coach-I developed many strengths from this and then took more risks.
A4: I'm living it now - I'm putting a class together and gonna work with students on global fluency with
A4: Jumped into PBL implementation--Allowed me to become a district leader as a teacher.

The quickest route to exhaustion is not taking risks - not pushing the boundaries of personal growth.
https://t.co/RlWydx5H9S
I resonate with this. So worth it! https://t.co/RPOJeM3SHe
A4: I took a risk becoming a teacher. Was climbing the corporate ladder but didn't feel fulfilled. Was not working within my WHY
A4 Just like a first tweet...
Just like a first blog post...
The first time I posted a belief on the wall made me nervous.
Teaching is rocket science. Most of what it makes it rocket science is about fostering relationships
Great point-I've stepped out of my comfort zone many times in my career-developed new strengths each time https://t.co/rcoH3f1oOE
took a risk many times in expanding how I view education which has allowed me to learn & grow with students
A4: 1/2 Deciding that anytime I found myself "disliking" a S, that would spend MORE time and attention on that S until I changed.
A4 It took me a long time to decide to get into administration. Lots of people encouraged me to do it. Now it is the best job!
A3: students are like most people.they just want someone to see them and for their voices to be heard.Relationships provide that
knows the truth https://t.co/F7IaxjOaRp
I truly do believe this; relationships are the foundation of all the things we do in .
A4: when you're putting students first you're constantly taking risks. Each risk is tied to a new way to create opportunities
A4. I moved from a to a class. Re-energized and on my toes after 16 years of teaching math
A4 I left a school I was comfy at to a school after an annexation. Worked with best PD model I could have had
Completely agree w/ this. Settling leads to boredom and lack of direction--and eventually burnout. https://t.co/60Z8fyLm5K
The quickest route to exhaustion is not taking risks - not pushing the boundaries of personal growth.
https://t.co/RlWydx5H9S
A4: 2/2 Hasn't failed me yet. Inevitably, I understand that S better, like them more, and am a better teacher for it.
Love love love my middle schoolers! They're awesome.
A4 The territory of true learning is riddled with risk.
That's where we ask our students to travel every day. We should, too.
A4: changed 2full inclusion model as a HS spec ed teacher w/ HS principal 3 days before school started! Best subgroup scores ever!
This should have been implemented years ago

I can relate to that challenge.
A4: risk #1 I'm going to attempt to start blogging... hopefully
A risk.... diving in and becoming a connected educator. No explanation needed!! 🙌🏻

Well said https://t.co/1Cw6zXBa2S
A4 The lesson here is that it was never a risk at all. It was a change that had some unwarranted worry attached to it. Be brave.
A4 -I never use the word "no." I love to expand my brain. Sometimes it works out better. Never stop inquiring and pushing.
I seriously thought I'd only do high school. Took a risk and got into middle! Love these kids! Days fly by!

totally agree about blogging. Definitely feels like a risk to put yourself out there so to speak.
A4: he trusted us As IS to change all schedules and redesign our approaches & it paid off big! Great leaders trust their teachers!
A4: giving it ALL to my staff...communication, consistency, caring, collaboration on a daily basis. No excuses. Everyone grows!
A4: I presented at a conference & began to realize I can help people by sharing the things I do. On the flip side, I grew as well
I think switching schools, levels, subjects, classes, etc,is part of growth & learning. More educators should do it!
yep didn't start teaching until I was in my late 20s.
thanks Josh! We need to get together soon!
A4: Moderated a Twitter chat last week. It was fun and I learned tons! Next is in November for NCTMs PtA.
presenting at conferences has provided me with powerful learning experiences as well. I seek those opportunities.

I started blogging a bit too...was encouraged by so many on Twitter to do it! It's a great outlet!
A4: Pushing boundaries with the structure of many building team meetings. Challenging "the way it has always been done."
And we are so glad you realized that - because we have a lot to learn from you!
thanks. Surrounded by great educators.
My first year was grades 7, 10, 12. Loved 'em all but saw my strength was with those middle school kids.
A4b: no such thing as a true risk when it comes to our Ss. We have to go for it and do whatever it takes to improve their lives
A4 When I realized that I didn't have to control the learning and let the Ss have a say in what we did in class.
we each find the kids we fit in with best - middle school is where I fit & where I understand students best
I often think I learn more through presenting. Plus I get to meet some super awesome people.
A5: We all learn best from our mistakes. Our charge should be creating an environment where Ss feel safe making those mistakes!
it's definitely worth the fear. Reflecting and growing are more important than anything to me
This is a powerful growth moment, and it leads to even more amplified learning. https://t.co/ynaJ2xXURA
A4 When I realized that I didn't have to control the learning and let the Ss have a say in what we did in class.
great stuff, Jodie! Make sure to promote and tag others throughout the week!
A5 most I've ever learned was from struggling and mistakes
A4 Agree with . Every time I present I realize I am taking a chance. You learn as much about yourself as others do.
A4: went back to teaching after a 4 year hiatus (mil. spouse). So glad I did. New town &school, old profession I've always loved.
A5: The struggle is where the learning actually happens. We coast on easy. Easy is comfy. Comfy places aren't learning zones.
A5: We find that we tend to learn more when we are out of our comfort zone into the risk zone!
I'm at 5/6 but I interact with 7/8 too...just a wonderful age group now that I'm used to their mentalities!
A5: The struggle is when learning occurs as you make sense of things. Cognitive dissonance with growth mindset in action.
A5: What doesn't kill us makes us better - we can always learn from struggles and mistakes.
Exactly. https://t.co/A1eWwmsLuc
I often think I learn more through presenting. Plus I get to meet some super awesome people.
post it! Even if it's not perfect! Fail forward! You got it!
I literally take a chance each time I present - I always try something new-always tell about my risk.
I hear you!!! I had to be a principal, but So much easier & more focused to make a difference in my current role!
for sure. I am amazed at how much thinking and reflecting I do during the writing of a blog post.
Q4:success & growth are built on the # of times we took risks and came out the other side and lived to tell about it!!
and if need be, I'd be happy to look over it and give you feedback! Lmk!
A5. When was the last time you grew as an individual from taking the easy route?
Relationships allows us to take more risks because we know those will jump in to support those risks to accomplish our goals
A5: The struggle makes the sacrifice that much sweeter.
I really appreciate hearing about all of these risks! Thank you for sharing!
Oh Yes! A variety of experiences fills the toolbox I think. (maybe I just convinced myself since I've taught k-12)
A5 I shared with many stakeholders a time I failed this year and what I did with it. Vulnerability makes us human to others.
laughter is the best...sometimes it's hard to not laugh! Ss love to share and I love to listen!
Go for it! We need teacher leaders to participate in the process, especially as we move into
get results not excuses everyday- love it!
hard to "heart" that tweet due to the last 7 letters. fan here. Heading to Wembley in late October.
We all have future risks / learning opportunities waiting for us...
it's far less about other people reading my blog! Which is good for a small timer like me!
A5: The best part of facing struggles is that it makes us really think about who we are and define our beliefs.
A5: When we struglle with something and never give up, we really learn a whole lot!
A4c: not caring what others think about our passion for Ss and education. It's a profession that must be lived with exuberant love
A5: If we're not struggling, maybe we're not working hard enough? It shouldn't be easy! It's dedication, trials, errors....
A5: Reflecting on challenges and how get over barriers helps us to grow and get better the next time around.
Love this visual! Thanks for posting this! - make sure to capture this in the archive!
A5 stress forces evolution. It is only through struggle we can adapt and evolve.
A5 Struggle provides us with both challenge and clarity.
A5: It teaches us NOT to fear failure. It shows that its ok not to get something YET, as long as we keep trying.
A5: Struggle makes us pause, reflect, consider different angles & strategies. It's not comfortable, but it's GOOD.
it is that productive struggle!
A5 I think struggle is important if student driven. Then the powerful learning comes from a place passion/interest not compliance
A5: Learn more and retain it when you struggle with it. Kind of motivating too.
A5 the struggle/mistakes. Students should analyze the journey
KaBoom! This attitude will take us far! https://t.co/0P28YQpXgD
A4c: not caring what others think about our passion for Ss and education. It's a profession that must be lived with exuberant love
You hit it right on the head! https://t.co/VdANoAJwSs
A5: The best part of facing struggles is that it makes us really think about who we are and define our beliefs.
A5: Facing a struggle brings greater effort (physically, mentally and emotionally) and makes us reach out for help from others!
A5: if we don't struggle we don't grow, learn, or change. It's not easy, but pushing through reaps endless rewards!
A5 It reminds us what learning is like. Ss struggle to learn new concepts, and the empathy gained from struggling helps me relate
A5: struggles challenge us which leads us to be our best! We appreciate the learning we encounter and model how to face it for Ss!
A5: Uncomfortable learning helps us to grow as learners. We need to step out of our boxes to learn new things.
like spelling...its struggle!!!! LOL!
A5 struggle can help us evaluate our beliefs & priorities. I struggled buying in initially to but had powerful impact on me
A4) decided to “go for it” despite risk of failure - why learning to juggle took 12 years & 45 minutes, https://t.co/8OG9M2NXYv
I found my purpose is not to evaluate and manage. its to take hands & guide through relationships not compliance.
A5) Positioned like an arrow in a bow...temporarily held back, inevitably to be shot forward!
I agree. I also admit I'm the hardest on myself. I have to do better at that. https://t.co/B8PNBqCo7G
it is that productive struggle!
A5: it creates the ability to grow & learn. It also prepares us for life. Nobody gets it right every time in life
I love the idea of analyzing the journey. Great opportunity for student self-reflection. https://t.co/8tOxwauENr
A5 the struggle/mistakes. Students should analyze the journey
A5: facing struggles lead to the most growth. Overcoming fears and complacency don't happen with taking the first step
This is the mindset we should be instilling within our Ss!
Outright failure is rare. Teach that struggles, setbacks & stumbles are common steps to success. https://t.co/O8K1ilDgYe
I. LOVE. THIS. https://t.co/i8S43MMMax
A5) Positioned like an arrow in a bow...temporarily held back, inevitably to be shot forward!
Q5 struggle is proof of life! from struggle we can show & share growth!!! To walk away from struggle shows no work ethic
Sometimes we have too many "learning opportunities" in a week - it can be exhausting https://t.co/T8Tvoya2Xk
We all have future risks / learning opportunities waiting for us...
A4 asked Ts 2 come up w/new electives. Early results, greater student engagement
So important to model this for Ss!
I have been & will continue. , , & many others have helped me find & use that voice.
****Q6 is coming up in 1 minute.
A5 if you're struggling, you're probably out of your comfort zone, which is the best zone👌 deeper learning & deeper reflections
Waukesha , , , , , , Bryan Mitchell , Blake Barnett ,
A5-Steve says Ts have 2 choices when Ss struggle-soften the challenge or embrace the fact the the travel is demanding-pg 77
thanks Stacy! You're the best!
A5: if we struggle and fail, it's an opportunity to learn and grow
A5 Failure IS learning. If you never struggle, you aren't doing anything new.
Love how some of the biggest challenges brought the 3 of us together!
A5 struggle is where we learn. We learn about ourselves, how to overcome challenges. We learn we are capable of greatness
My ELA dept. is trying to find ways to teach this to our Ss - trained for years to fear failure, avoid risks.
sharing vulnerabilites is the best wway to build relationships. simple as saying 'I don't know' let's look up the answer together.
This is totally what our presentations are all about: what we learned, how we struggled, how we succeeded.
plus, you become a model for your students as they see you take risks, learn and be successful
A5 if you're struggling, you'll either find a way or you'll find an excuse... ( 😉)
Do you have some suspicions about what might work well?
A5 in order for purposeful struggle, we need 2 slow down. Let learning take root & grow instead of speeding standard 2 standard
A6: No matter what you say or think, you're not "bad". No matter what you do, you are not "bad". YOU have gifts. I believe in YOU.
Struggles often lead us to working with others/asking for support. That's how it should be. Education isn't an island!
A5: a struggle gives you the choice to sink or swim. I'm a swimmer! Sinking a bit every now and then makes me kick harder! 🏊🏻♀️💪🏻
We need to work together to amplify the voices of Ts, Ss, parents - happy to do that with
it's a gift....a possible useless gift. But none the less a gift I tell you.
Q2 what about letting our staff know we believe in them, good moral for teachers equals positivity passed to students
A6: don't try to be everything to everybody. You have great things to share. Help others to grow with you. Don't slow down.
A6: I know things are tough right now outside of school. I'm thinking of you & here for you. Please let me know how I can help.
A6: Your circumstances do not define you. Your drive, brilliance, will sustain you to go further than you EVER thought possible!
A6: A S threw out a challenge today, to see if I could find his Twitter account (we bet a small bag of chips) I will inspire him!
A4 and another thing. Self directed PD for staff. 1 size does not fit all take away
A6 let them to know how much you believe in them. That they are uniquely special and that they matter!
A6: "you're smart. You've got this & I believe in you!"
So true, I love having conversations with students in a real tone and manner. They need to hear our life's story
A6 YOU. CAN. DO. THIS. I teach all freshmen, and they need to hear this. Believe in yourself, work hard, and succeed!
Q6: It's OK to get mad...but then get over it. Use your anger to effect change and improve situations!
There are some powerful messages here - I challenge you to consider posting them, and sharing them aloud!
We r talking a lot about assessment. Returning things w/o grades. TIME given for revision, rethinking. Big changes.
We learn when we sink every now and then
A6: "When you get to middle school... keep your head on straight or I'll find you"... (just kidding).... or am I 🤔
A6 Success takes many forms. Make sure you know what makes you feel successful, and strive for that, not what others say it is.
yes, reasonable challenge (when struggle can --> success) improves "ability to grow & learn,...prepares us for life."
A6: ALL of them. Deliver true, genuine messages that show you listen to them and that you truly want the best for them.
Put your messages on your classroom walls! https://t.co/F4EBJ5CUbd
There are some powerful messages here - I challenge you to consider posting them, and sharing them aloud!
A6: "We can do this! I will be your learning partner; all you need is a little boost." Students need hope and support.
A6.2: hardest part is to just pick one student. I'd like to write one for each student I have! Maybe I will!
A6: help student understand it isn't about what you're doing for the you of today but what you're doing for the you of tomorrow
A6 - I care about who you are and how you're doing the other 23hrs of the day too. https://t.co/Die8CYE4jw
Q6 Think of a student (no names) that would benefit from a powerful, positive message from you. What will your me… https://t.co/NCPLC7blVs
A6 I know it said S, but 1st in my head is a specific T-glad to say I wrote thm a message earlier tonight. To sum up-we need you
I see what you mean. Time for student reflection is very important.
Spent tonight helping to capture stakeholder voices around
A6: Your future is not already defined. You can do what you want to do. You can do it.
A6 No sarcasm intended... But I could list every student. All Ss need a powerful positive message from a T.
A6: I talked w/one today who now understands that there r many adults that care for them & will support them & provide resources.
A6: Dream big and take a risk.
A6: Nobody is dumb, everyone can succeed. They are better at things than I am, and I am better than they are at some things.
A6: What can I do to help you have a better experience in my class? Give Ss time to think, reflect, and wait a day for response
Absolutely! That may be why I posted them on the wall for the classroom community.
A6b: have affirming statements for other staff would also go a LONG way in achieving greatness that will overflow to our students!
A6: I am seeing so much growth & strength in you. You've become such a positive leader. I'm cheering you on!
This message exemplifies how what we post for our students speaks to us as well! https://t.co/9AXDjd4AI1
A6: Dream big and take a risk.
A6 - most kids won't remember everything you say... they will remember how you made them feel. THAT is what counts.
***Q7 is coming up in 1 minute.
A6 You belong here. Your ideas, insights & opinions matter. You count; you are important. We want to hear from you. We will listen
A6: I care about you. I'm here to help. Let's have some fun.
A5: we're really emphasizing with our S that important learning comes from struggles, emphasizing summative and formative assement
Thank you for investing that time! We appreciate it!
You don't want to battle Riley in the GIF department.
Powerful, important messages from passionate educators to students who need to hear them.
Challenge repeated: Post your message.
A6 u r a creative thinker. U r smart & thoughtful. You may struggle n ur classroom, but u r a star n the artroom. u will succeed!
Great message for children and adults https://t.co/douUGnYYgy
A6: Your future is not already defined. You can do what you want to do. You can do it.
We do this @ our school. Hardest part is keeping the board loaded w/ messages! I've even stolen some focus once or twice
Thanks, Steve! I can honestly say I say that to my own son! I don't worry about him "doing school" - so take risks!
I think there is a space on your wall right now...
...that you could fill with a powerful message tomorrow.
I really think I'm going to write each student a note this weekend. They need and deserve a boost from me.
A7: The future is awaiting your arrival!
A7: Each and every one of you is important.
A7: You are important. You matter.
SO AWESOME!!! DO IT! LET'S ALL DO IT! https://t.co/9HWvsplPlX

A7 Mistakes are welcome here; students are learning together!
If you post a Big Message on your wall, you will soon hunger to discover the next message. A new journey will begin.
A7 I am so honored to be here with you and thankful that you are here too
A6 School is important, but not everything. Take care of business, but make sure you have fun. Be a kid while you have the chance.
A6: Students need to know they are more than enough. Never quit. Always be better than yesterday. https://t.co/cj5frFEfES
A7b: The future will be impacted by the choices you make today! Make excellent ones!
A7 learn how to learn effectively. It is the greatest skill you can acquire. It is total and absolute freedom.
yes, good Ts (who think/feel with empathy) realize "all Ss need a powerful positive message from T," do it.
I hope you will have a chance to share this every day. Beautiful.
https://t.co/eVc8I3tdR8
A7 I am so honored to be here with you and thankful that you are here too
A7: we struggle! We fail! We move forward! We succeed! Key part of this is WE! We need each other! We learn together!
A7. My Fail Better poster.
I like that you added fun!
A7: The simple statement that serves as mantra...
YOU MATTER.
Et tu, Spiri? Don't encourage him! Ha!
This question challenges us to move from what COULD I post all the way to what WILL I post and share with students.
what if they wrote encouraging and supportive notes to each other?
A5 working on a huge project now, out of my comfort zone, will help students. Growth coming.
A7: my "one word" this year is . I tell my Ss all the time to believe in themselves, their dreams, their goals! I do!
Teach someone how to be creative. You are the experts:)

Ray - I had a parent night for Global Scholars last night! I can't wait to lead this work!
A7. I care about you. Really.
I am a better T because I heard so many dift voices raised in support of high standards
A7 Forget about yourself for a moment and focus on being kind, generous, and accepting of others.
Thank you to everyone for joining and me for !
Do it!! Then post pics of your celebrations!!! https://t.co/s4FcNtIN5h
