A1: I see personalized learning as allowing each student the chance to morph a lesson or assignment to best fit their individual needs whether that be life skills, concepts, or content. Making teaching flexible for Students. #ssvpln#pblchat
A.1: I think a large part of personalization is student ownership of their learning and getting individual feedback on their work https://t.co/CMfUzPQrBT#PBLChat
I also think a large part of personalization is providing personalized pathways for Ss #PBLChat individualized ways for students to show what they know https://t.co/vBcrjswPOX
Maybe, maybe not. IT's possible that you can have great DI w/out getting to PL. PL requires student ownership and agency, but DI can remain teacher directed. #pblchat
A2: Be able to adapt assignments and lessons. Allow for students to work in class so that you can adjust whatever is being worked on for each student. I think this will get easier over time but at first will require explanation for S's. #ssvpln#pblchat
#PBLchat Yes! Voice and choice are critical to personalized learning, I believe there is ample room for v & c in well constructed projects that tailor work to Ss interests and needs
A2: A lot of coaching and support. Allowing time for exploration. Accepting failing forward and exemplifying positive experiences w/ Ts and Ss #pblchat
Ah, good clarification. My earlier answer is still relevant - teach how to problem FINDING (thank you @franklabanca), goal management, curiosity&wonder... #pblchat

@newtechnetwork, @inspirepassion, @franklabanca
A2: Ideally for adults by modeling #PBL framework in PD and other learning environments. For Ss, ASK them what their strengths/ weaknesses/ interests, etc. are. #PBLchat
#PBLchat Part of the signal of personalization are assessments that allow for accessibility, rigor, and transfer - giving students personalized feedback on growth towards mastery/proficiency/competency https://t.co/sI4JzskZx7
A2: show encouragement & support for making unique choices! Praise effort to be different & try something new. Ask them to share their experiences w/ others. #pblchat
The link I offered goes to a set of rubrics for a number of habits, including ownership and self direction. Ss set daily goals, practice habits, get feedback on those habits, self assess, get assessed, reflect at end of day... These are essential dispositions. #pblchat
A3: Instruction starts with asking Ss what interests them based on the learning goals you will be focusing on next. Simple survey to start off the unit, and go from there. #PBLchat
Have you considered competency-based approaches? Allows students to work iteratively on skills/knowledge they lack until they achieve the required level of competency. #PBLchat
A3: Teacher role must change from dictator to facilitator, and rubrics must be at the forefront to ensure their choice results in academic & agency success. #pblchat
A3: My HOPE is instruction shifts to learning partnerships and collaborations. Ss ID problems, issues, research them, use design process individually and collaboratively. Take on real problems. Instruction becomes mentoring, managing ZPD. #pblchat
Yes, but must go beyond interest. That's one component of PL, but cannot be the only. Must demand rigor & critical thinking. Reach out to @franklabanca for more. #pblchat
Instruction evolves as the students do throughout the year. After giving interest surveys and scaffolding some PL, instructors can begin to let students form their own questions and perform inquiry about personalized areas. #pblchat#ssvpln
A.3: I think personalization is embedded in a whole host of instructional shifts - it is as much an adaptive change as it is a technical change https://t.co/fyHfBkKO89#PBLchat
It seems to me that it is much easier to tell someone how to be PBL teacher than actually being one. How many in here are actual PBL educators? #pblchat
We just wrapped up a #PBL on cells, mini-lessons included a discussion and act-out activity to demonstrate cell size, a graphic organizer, etc. Short, to the point and when needed #PBLchat
Media skills are a favorite. Many Ss know some apps, not others, can teach each other. My addition to the conversation is often related to good digital citizenship. #PBLchat
A4: Late to this chat, but I think Ts need to take advantage of designated intervention times in order to deliver personalized instruction. Our RTI block is a perfect time to enable PBL differentiated by readiness, interest, and learner profile. #pblchat
Will do. Currently mulling over a unit on photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Tough content, want it to mean something to them! #PBLchat#whatkeepsmeupatnight
RTI is not just for struggling Ss. Addressing the needs of your high achievers and gifted learners is also an intervention that can be delivered through PBL. #pblchat
A4: Using technology to better understand individual Ss understanding. Then strategic grouping & targeting those who need more to grasp concepts/skills. #pblchat
A4: Strong rubrics give Ss something to use as a foundation for personalization. Reimagining “assessment” allows Ts to test skills/standards in a personalized way. #pblchat
A.4: In short, culture that embraces ALL students and their myriad diversity, leadership that supports teachers in personalizing learning, and a little bit of technology that helps individualize consistent (and continuous!) feedback to students #PBLchat
A4: Using technology to better understand individual Ss understanding. Then strategic grouping & targeting those who need more to grasp concepts/skills. #pblchat
It's also a waste of a teacher's time & skills to lecture at a whole class in person. Screencast that direct instruction & use time w/Ss to facilitate thinking! #pblchat
A4 (cont): campuses need to offer space & support for collaboration at gr level & subject to provide feedback, inspiration, ideas, & depth of meaning in projects. #pblchat
A4: Its been mentioned by a few people, but so far this semester my S's have appreciated rubrics that align with state standards to inform their projects. School libraries and historical societies have also been very helpful for my U.S. history classrooms. #ssvlpn#pblchat
Right? I would love for my district to offer credit for/a list of scheduled twitter chats. I learn so much, & I’d do them anyway, but I’d love to see districts promote them! #pblchat
Yes, PLCs and good teacher culture, and in those PLCs an opportunity to consider how personalization is one of the most important elements of effective instruction https://t.co/sSJvUIuiGi#PBLchat
JoDee from Clinton OK here. Our Makerspace has been awesome. Ss participated in a "Shark Tank". They designed, developed, created products then marketed the products to a panel of business people. AWESOME! #PBLchat
As a leader, you need to make yourself vulnerable. Take risks for your Ts & Ss. Follow through. Share your passion with your team. Ask for feedback. #PBLchat

Everything. Every word, every action a leader makes makes or breaks good culture... recruitment, training, and ongoing support, etc. #NoPressure#PBLChat
A5- Correct me if I am wrong- isn't this what we are doing now? Life-long learners who thirst to find creative ways to create their own personalized learning environment? I know it is for me! #pblchat
1. Here people that love kids & their content. 2. Give them what they need. 3. Set high expectations. 4. Listen when they talk. 5. Remove obstacles & streamline the high expectations. 6. Celebrate them often. 7. Honor their sacrifices and efforts. 8. Serve them humbly.
#PBLChat
As a principal , personalized learning happened for me when my performance was measured against a common rubric for indicators of high performance, and then had the opportunity to show growth in those indicators: Standards, Assessment, Feedback led to Ownership (PL) #PBLchat
A6: We are going to be responsible for our own learning. School PD can't fit everyone's needs. We find our own PLCs, twitter chats, Yammer groups, Facebook groups, etc. We find what we need and collaborate with those who are like us. Learning from other Ts is key. #PBLchat
A6: We reckon w/the truth that young people come to school w/various strengths & needs depending on their home & community. And that we invest in the resources Ss from low SES communities need, so that they can truly realize opportunity. #PBLchat#equity
A6: I hope that me and my PLC can mold our future units around PL. It goes very well with the new Iowa social studies/NCSS standards, and is rooted in inquiry. It gives my students control over their learning and can allow for multiple means of expression. #ssvpln#pblchat
A6: My ultimate goal is to help Ss develop into critically thinking, curious, engaged members of our world. With some exceptions (e.g. math facts), they can find facts in milliseconds. They need the skills to analyze/decipher/critique. #PBLchat
