  • dan_liebert Nov 14 @ 8:06 PM EST

A1) How does Personalized Learning compare with/relate to Differentiation? #AnsweringWithAQuestion #PBLChat
  • mousermed Nov 14 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: “Personalized Learning” is allowing students to have voice & choice in their lrng - exploring their interests while learning content #PBLChat
  • dot2teach Nov 14 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1 I see PL as tailoring the learning experience to meet the Ss individual needs #pblchat
  • AJBloom2pnt0 Nov 14 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: To me, personalized learning is an individualized instructional learning path that encompasses the whole learner. #pblchat
  • kimQED Nov 14 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: Personalized learning is responsive to the learner's needs, gifts, and affinities, attending to his/her zone of proximal development. #PBLchat
  • pattoneducator Nov 14 @ 8:08 PM EST
A.1 Giving students exactly what they need personally and connecting it to the standards that they need as well. #PBLChat

  • emma_weatherly Nov 14 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1 personalized learning involves differentiated activities and workshops. I also think student choice leads to better learning #PBLChat
  • MaryBellavance Nov 14 @ 8:09 PM EST
Q1 Personalized learning emphasizes student’s interest and readiness levels. Allows for collaborative learning opportunities. #pblchat
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:10 PM EST
Love the question with a question - what do others think about PL vs differentiation? @funkdaddytweet #pblchat
    In reply to @funkdaddytweet
  • dan_liebert Nov 14 @ 8:10 PM EST
A.1: I think a large part of personalization is student ownership of their learning and getting individual feedback on their work https://t.co/CMfUzPQrBT #PBLChat
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:11 PM EST
Differentiation is necessary, but is not necessarily personalization--can do DI for groups of students. A great start. #pblchat
    In reply to @newtechnetwork, @funkdaddytweet
  • inspirepassion Nov 14 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: Differentiation creates Personalized Learning. #PBLchat
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:12 PM EST
Not sure what it says about our #geekiness that we are on Twitter and not out at local watering holes! #pblchat
    In reply to @edutwitt
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:12 PM EST
Q2: Now that we've got some definition. How do we prepare Ss and adults to take advantage of personalized opportunities? #pblchat
  • dan_liebert Nov 14 @ 8:13 PM EST
I also think a large part of personalization is providing personalized pathways for Ss #PBLChat individualized ways for students to show what they know https://t.co/vBcrjswPOX
  • kimQED Nov 14 @ 8:13 PM EST
Differentiation sounds like the T is making the choices; personalization shld put learning in Ss hands. #pblchat
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:13 PM EST
Maybe, maybe not. IT's possible that you can have great DI w/out getting to PL. PL requires student ownership and agency, but DI can remain teacher directed. #pblchat
    In reply to @inspirepassion
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:14 PM EST
    Amen. #pblchat
    In reply to @kimQED
  • edutwitt Nov 14 @ 8:14 PM EST
We've got to own it! First we tweet, then maybe we take on the town! (Or go to sleep!) #pblchat #deeperlearning is exhausting!
    In reply to @lorimcewen
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:15 PM EST
Love that distinction - I like the idea that personalized learning is something that Ss have to do for themselves. #pblchat
    In reply to @kimQED
  • inspirepassion Nov 14 @ 8:15 PM EST
Good point, @kimQED. My mindset always assumes student voice and choice, a pillar of #PBL. Not everyone starts from that position. #PBLchat
    • kimQED Nov 14 @ 8:13 PM EST
Differentiation sounds like the T is making the choices; personalization shld put learning in Ss hands. #pblchat
  • pattoneducator Nov 14 @ 8:16 PM EST
Provide students and adults with choice to learning . Adults need to be able to choose what info they need and kids need voice. #pblchat
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2: Not sure that "opportunities" = personalization. That invokes teacher choice, not student. #pblchat
  • TanisSimoncelli Nov 14 @ 8:16 PM EST
Hello from St. Charles IL #PBLchat
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:17 PM EST
Love the thinking GSP is doing on personalization and assessment pathways. Check it: https://t.co/gBFvv98bAZ #pblchat
    In reply to @dan_liebert
  • MrOrabuttsClass Nov 14 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: Be able to adapt assignments and lessons. Allow for students to work in class so that you can adjust whatever is being worked on for each student. I think this will get easier over time but at first will require explanation for S's. #ssvpln #pblchat
  • inspirepassion Nov 14 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: Clarification, please. By "adults," do you mean those who work in the school? #PBLchat
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2:What we can do is create bounded choice as a first step, but true PL allows Ss to demonstrate evidence of mastery. #pblchat
  • kimQED Nov 14 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: lots of explicit coaching in goal management and other Habits/Dispositions. See https://t.co/MqoeYSR7zk #pblchat
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:18 PM EST
In general yes. I'm a fan of the idea that you can't give what you don't have. How do we prep Ts and other adults? #pblchat
    In reply to @inspirepassion
  • dan_liebert Nov 14 @ 8:18 PM EST
#PBLchat Yes! Voice and choice are critical to personalized learning, I believe there is ample room for v & c in well constructed projects that tailor work to Ss interests and needs
    In reply to @inspirepassion, @kimQED
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:19 PM EST
Love the idea of bounded choice to start and scaffolding for increased choice and autonomy. #pblchat
    In reply to @lorimcewen
  • dot2teach Nov 14 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2 My Ss struggled with "doing something different" than others. Now they are comfortable talking about what they need to improve. #pblchat
  • TanisSimoncelli Nov 14 @ 8:19 PM EST
What does this look like? #PBLchat
    In reply to @kimQED
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:20 PM EST
Agreed, but if not opportunities, what would signal personalization? #pblchat
    In reply to @lorimcewen
  • AJBloom2pnt0 Nov 14 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: A lot of coaching and support. Allowing time for exploration. Accepting failing forward and exemplifying positive experiences w/ Ts and Ss #pblchat
  • kimQED Nov 14 @ 8:20 PM EST
Ah, good clarification. My earlier answer is still relevant - teach how to problem FINDING (thank you @franklabanca), goal management, curiosity&wonder... #pblchat
    In reply to @newtechnetwork, @inspirepassion, @franklabanca
  • TanisSimoncelli Nov 14 @ 8:21 PM EST
It would be interesting to ask the S how they would show their learning before giving parameters. #PBLchat
    In reply to @dot2teach
  • kimQED Nov 14 @ 8:21 PM EST
sorry - my internet got cut off briefly; I lost the thread - what does what look like? #PBLchat
    In reply to @TanisSimoncelli
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:21 PM EST
Opps sounds like take it or leave it. PL demands that Ss create their own questions--right @franklabanca ? #pblchat
    In reply to @newtechnetwork, @franklabanca
  • MrOrabuttsClass Nov 14 @ 8:21 PM EST
Are you thinking of mastery in terms of a skill or content? Or both? #ssvpln #PBLchat
    In reply to @lorimcewen
  • inspirepassion Nov 14 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2: Ideally for adults by modeling #PBL framework in PD and other learning environments. For Ss, ASK them what their strengths/ weaknesses/ interests, etc. are. #PBLchat
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2: One way to prepare is to help them own stories of their learning: https://t.co/STvDl0UiFJ #pblchat
  • funkdaddytweet Nov 14 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2) #AnsweringWithAQuestion again... is there anyone with tips for using Personalized Learning to close performance and achievement gaps? #PBLChat
  • inspirepassion Nov 14 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2: For both adults and Ss, incorporate reflection as a step in every process. #PBLchat
  • NathanGeeting Nov 14 @ 8:24 PM EST
I'm really interested in what you meant by explicit coaching and goal mngmt. What does that look like for you? #pblchat
    In reply to @kimQED
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:24 PM EST
Like that! @HortonAlix often talks about opps that allow for vs those that require. #pblchat
    In reply to @lorimcewen, @newtechnetwork, @franklabanca, @HortonAlix
  • MsCSLow Nov 14 @ 8:24 PM EST
Sorry I’m late to the party, but I’m catching up quick! #pblchat
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:24 PM EST
Great thoughts on Qs 1 and 2 - Q3 on the way #pblchat
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:25 PM EST
Q3: How does instruction change or evolve in a personalized environment? #pblchat
  • dan_liebert Nov 14 @ 8:25 PM EST
#PBLchat Part of the signal of personalization are assessments that allow for accessibility, rigor, and transfer - giving students personalized feedback on growth towards mastery/proficiency/competency https://t.co/sI4JzskZx7
    In reply to @newtechnetwork, @lorimcewen
  • MrsDamianoWH Nov 14 @ 8:25 PM EST
Jumping in late #PBLchat ... A2: Talk through the messiness as much as needed! It's okay that it isn't what they are used to.
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:25 PM EST
Check out Lindsay Unified in CA. Just learned tonight that they've made tremendous gains after 10 yrs of PL. #pblchat
    In reply to @funkdaddytweet
  • MsCSLow Nov 14 @ 8:25 PM EST
A2: show encouragement & support for making unique choices! Praise effort to be different & try something new. Ask them to share their experiences w/ others. #pblchat
  • kimQED Nov 14 @ 8:26 PM EST
The link I offered goes to a set of rubrics for a number of habits, including ownership and self direction. Ss set daily goals, practice habits, get feedback on those habits, self assess, get assessed, reflect at end of day... These are essential dispositions. #pblchat
    In reply to @NathanGeeting
  • MrsDamianoWH Nov 14 @ 8:26 PM EST
A3: Instruction starts with asking Ss what interests them based on the learning goals you will be focusing on next. Simple survey to start off the unit, and go from there. #PBLchat
  • kimQED Nov 14 @ 8:26 PM EST
wow - so many characters to reply with!! #pblchat
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:27 PM EST
A3: Teachers facilitate. Sage on the stage, to guide on the side. Truly, it's about helping Ss to formulate the right, rigorous questions. #pblchat
  • TanisSimoncelli Nov 14 @ 8:27 PM EST
A3: I feel students taking greater risks when in a environment they create for themselves=problem solving|critical thinking #pblchat
  • inspirepassion Nov 14 @ 8:28 PM EST
Have you considered competency-based approaches? Allows students to work iteratively on skills/knowledge they lack until they achieve the required level of competency. #PBLchat
  • MsCSLow Nov 14 @ 8:28 PM EST
A3: Teacher role must change from dictator to facilitator, and rubrics must be at the forefront to ensure their choice results in academic & agency success. #pblchat
  • dot2teach Nov 14 @ 8:28 PM EST
Just curious, but how many are current classroom teachers? #pblchat
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:28 PM EST
A3: Love this resource from Great Schools on Summative Assessments that point to personalization: https://t.co/rlUfVJXJLA #pblchat
  • kimQED Nov 14 @ 8:28 PM EST
A3: My HOPE is instruction shifts to learning partnerships and collaborations. Ss ID problems, issues, research them, use design process individually and collaboratively. Take on real problems. Instruction becomes mentoring, managing ZPD. #pblchat
  • AJBloom2pnt0 Nov 14 @ 8:28 PM EST
A3- Reflection and revision becomes ownership of the student as where it should be. #PBLChat
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:28 PM EST
Yes, but must go beyond interest. That's one component of PL, but cannot be the only. Must demand rigor & critical thinking. Reach out to @franklabanca for more. #pblchat
    In reply to @MrsDamianoWH, @franklabanca
  • NathanGeeting Nov 14 @ 8:29 PM EST
A3: In some ways it means stepping back. Focusing on "overseeing" and guiding more than direct leadership. #pblchat
  • MrOrabuttsClass Nov 14 @ 8:29 PM EST
Instruction evolves as the students do throughout the year. After giving interest surveys and scaffolding some PL, instructors can begin to let students form their own questions and perform inquiry about personalized areas. #pblchat #ssvpln
  • krenier Nov 14 @ 8:29 PM EST
A3: Instruction is not standardized. Ts need to meet the needs of the Ss by teaching skills and concepts. #pblchat
    In reply to @newtechnetwork
  • newtechnetwork - Moderator Nov 14 @ 8:29 PM EST
Love this - thoughts on how to help Ss make that shift in ownership? #pblchat
    In reply to @AJBloom2pnt0
  • MrsDamianoWH Nov 14 @ 8:29 PM EST
So I was in another chat yesterday where many ppl disagreed with the rubric thing. I am glad I am not the only one who likes to use them. #PBLchat

A3 Instructional groupings vary depending on needs of learners. Once you have structures in place, it’s easier for Ss to manage. #PBLChat
  • lorimcewen Nov 14 @ 8:30 PM EST
Or what about assessments that are created by Ss? #pblchat
    In reply to @dan_liebert, @newtechnetwork
  • MrsDamianoWH Nov 14 @ 8:30 PM EST
Definitely agree. Just a starting point. Helps Ss form ownership from the start. #PBLchat
    In reply to @lorimcewen, @franklabanca
  • inspirepassion Nov 14 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3: Can be provided on an "as-needed" and "just-in-time" basis. Mini-workshops, one-on-one, trial-and-error, Ss helping each other, etc. #PBLchat
  • dan_liebert Nov 14 @ 8:30 PM EST
A.3: I think personalization is embedded in a whole host of instructional shifts - it is as much an adaptive change as it is a technical change https://t.co/fyHfBkKO89 #PBLchat

  • MrsAdneyCHS Nov 14 @ 8:58 PM EST
A6: We are going to be responsible for our own learning. School PD can't fit everyone's needs. We find our own PLCs, twitter chats, Yammer groups, Facebook groups, etc. We find what we need and collaborate with those who are like us. Learning from other Ts is key. #PBLchat
  • AndrewBiros Nov 14 @ 8:58 PM EST

  • MrOrabuttsClass Nov 14 @ 8:59 PM EST
A6: I hope that me and my PLC can mold our future units around PL. It goes very well with the new Iowa social studies/NCSS standards, and is rooted in inquiry. It gives my students control over their learning and can allow for multiple means of expression. #ssvpln #pblchat
