We chat every Tuesday night at 8:30-9:30 pm CST. All are welcome, especially EarlyEd teachers, leaders & experts. Co-founded & moderated by @techwnancy @JessicaCabeen & @VealHeidi
Hello #ecechat colleagues! I am Rachel Page and I am an Early Childhood Specialist @Region12 in Waco, TX . I am honored and excited to connect with you about what I believe is one of the single most important components in a preschool classroom - Read Alouds!
Jessica, Ed Specialist for Digital Innovation and Social Studies at ESC Region 12 in Waco, TX...I love literacy, read alouds and the magic of @rpageou! #ecechat
Hello! Iām Stacy and Iām a child development/ early learning specialist, trainer, & consultant from the DFW area. Excited to join in tonight. #ECEchat
A1: Read alouds provide the opportunity for teachers to pass along their passion for reading and expose students to vocab and situations they may not be familiar with. #ecechat
A1: The greatest benefit is helping to instill a love of books and reading with my students. I love when they get excited for read aloud time. #ecechat
A1. for me watching teachers cultivating sparks, engaging learners, and sharing their passions was a highlight for every classroom observation I have been in-Read Alouds spark so much energy and excited for learning! #ECEChat
A1: One benefit from read alouds is Ss get to hear the book, language, emotions, dialogue, vocabulary...so many skills read alouds have to offer. #ecechat
A1 Read Alouds provide golden moments of time that can instill and encourage a lifelong love of reading. Donāt underestimate the power of the Read Aloud #ecechat
A1: Watching stories come to life before the kids eyes. Read alouds are a time where the magic of reading can transform 4 walls into anything! #ECEchat
A2: Research supports 3 read alouds per day and repetition is critical! I typically do one intentionally planned interactive read aloud daily with two others to support the learning theme and grow the love for literacy! #ECEchat
A2 I have a specific time each day devoted to read aloud. I will also read to them during center time, during and after meal times. I've also incorporated books into my small group activities. #ecechat
A2: My goal is to read at least 1 read aloud a day; however, life happens and sometimes it does not work out that way. I use read alouds to introduce new skills. Yesterday I read Chrysanthemum to introduce comparing length of names during math. #ECEchat
A2: I encourage intentionally finding 2-3 times a day for read alouds with big group but donāt discount spontaneous opps with individual children and small groups. #ECEchat
A2: 3 a full day at a minimum, Intentionally plan 1 each day. Also, so important.. informal reading with a few or one on one. Great for relationship building/connecting. #ecechat
Ts commit to reading one picture book aloud per day...180 books on average per year...post a tiny picture of the book cover when read. It was started by @donalynbooks ...encouraged for all grade levels, especially older Ss #ecechat
1 on 1 is AWESOME! But as soon as you plop down in the library center, or simply pick up a book you are bound to have a few cuddle up next to you asap! #ECEchat
A2 This year, Iāve been creating Read Aloud videos and sharing on social media. Families can then watch together. I love providing these opportunities. ā¤ļøš#ecechat
I was reading a book to a child waiting to be picked up after school today to address a certain skill she needs help with...4 kids slid down the bench to listen in. They really crave being read to. #ECEChat
The counselors at @WISDMontessori are doing a read aloud for the for 25 days leading up to Christmas on FB live...so excited for this...great way to share new books w/Ps & Ss #ecechat
#ecechat also repetition helps children learn to use books as a resource. We were debating where carrots grow today. One student knew exactly which book to get off the bookshelf to find out... a fiction favorite Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!

A3: I am a huge fan of books that support #SEL skills...books like The Bad Seed, Stick & Stone, Drawn Together, After the Fall...beautiful images, amazing messages #ecechathttps://t.co/CLc3NQ6P21
A3: I loved teaching with Fairy Tale Twists like The Bid Bad Pig and the three little Wolves; great way to laugh at the differences between the original and the twist #Ecechat
A kiddo was reading me this in Reader's Workshop in a classroom today! He was not yet reading the words but had memorized and was changing his voice and loving it! #ECEchat
A3 I have so many I love to read, but my favorites this year have been books with no words. My kids were dumbfounded when I pulled out the first one and told them there were no words. They had the best time doing a picture read though. #ecechat
A3 A lot of my kids struggle seeing themselves as readers because they can't read words yet. I've seen a boost in confidence in this area since we started the wordless books. #ecechat
A3. I lovvvve fairy tales. I could spend a ton of time doing different versions! I also love If You Give... series! The kiddos love these and there is so much you can do with them! #ECEchat
These are great books to really get kids to pay attention, compare - contrast, and predict using what they know from the traditional versions. #ecechat

Greetings! I'm a developer who specializes in early math education. I'm looking for beta testers to try out my newest subitization app. Take a look: #ecechat
Q3: so many favorites. I Want My Monster, Grumpy Bird, Seven Hungry Babies, fairy tales and twists on fairy tales, Gruffalo.....stories where the characters can come alive to the kids #ecechat
This is definitely a struggle. @Mattglover123 is my go to professional resourcesare to help me help teachers help students see themselves as readers and writers before they are fluently reading and writing #ecechat
A2: At least one read aloud per day. My students have been bringing favorite books from home and having me read one book at the end of the day just before bus release. We are trying to make that work and are doing okay at it #ECEchat!
A3: I love Robert Munschās books! Amazing sound effects! The children always love to join in during the story. Wonderful for phonological awareness! #ECEchat
A4:Repetition! A read aloud becomes intentional when you plan to use the book to teach a specific skill, strategy, or concept. I use sticky notes to plan my think alouds, comprehension questions, and vocabulary within the text. And don't try to do it all in one reading! #ecechat
A3: more... I love using systems thinking tools to help students visualize events in a book. Hereās an example of a Behavior over Time Graph looking at the EFFORT of the characters #ecechat
A3 So many! Ish, or The Dot by Peter Reynolds. Art & Growth mindset to go with them. Gingerbread books, compare contrast, code the sequence, engineer a gingerbread man trap. #ECEChat
A3 I like Read Alouds that have surprises or an unexpected twist. Itās so fun to read them over and over watching the students responses. Throw in a costume, accent or prop and Iām good to go! #ecechat
It's important to use books with repeated patterns, rhyme, movement, etc to really engage our listeners - and future readers. Also, this helps make the PA, phonics, and print connection. #ecechat
A4. I start with vocabulary, and also try and plan questions. As it is my first year in PreK I am learning some of the tests and finding ones I like and others I want to change... itās important to keep in mind the needs of the learners and keeping them engaged #ECEchat
A4: Know your text and intentionally plan the skill that you want Ss to grasp. I highly encourage Ts to preplan questions as much as possible and to anticipate what Ss might ask abt when reading. #ecechat

If my teachers are not familiar with this idea of pre-planning, I encourage them to select one book a week to plan and prepare in a way that works for them. Then they end the year with a collection of planned read alouds - and they can grow that collection each year! #ecechat
A4: Preread!!! and consider...What are the assets of the book? Rare words, problem/solution, predictable text, areas for prediction, connections to feelings? #ecechat
A4 We read the same book for all 4 days for our read aloud. Day 1 is reading for enjoyment and prediction, Day 2 is vocab, Day 3 is comprehension, and Day 4 is retelling #ecechat
A4: I pre-read the book and jot down questions using depth of knowledge levels. I try to identify any words I think my students will struggle with and plan ways to act out those words. #ecechat
#ECEchat A4:. I make quick slide shows with real-life pictures of vocabulary words that Ss will hear in the book and the word used in the sentence from the book to help preview the word. We talk about the words before the book is read and touch on the words again later
A3 "The Emperor's Egg" M. Jenkins Kids can figure out the large words on the pg while I read the rest. "Wodney the Wat" H. Lester (This story is magical already!) At this moment, we're doing Doreen Cronin & Betsy Lewin's "Click Clack" books. Kids convos on them - magical!#ECEChat
I was working with a 1st grader today on an Informational Writing about her chosen topic - Zookeepers and all she wanted to do was tell me the story of Goodnight Gorilla! It was wonderfully frustrating :) But, I loved the connection! #ecechat
A4: Intentionally planning ahead of time. Make notes before reading: thought provoking questions to ask, unfamiliar vocabulary to discuss, opps to predict and recall elements of the story. #ECEChat
A5: Let the book live in centers for independent interaction and extension! Use the book to invite students to extend their learning while they play. #ecechat
A4 Base it off of the standard we are focusing on, build background knowledge with introducing vocabulary, build their lesson from the comprehension skill and bring in higher order thinking & thinking maps. #Ecechathttps://t.co/ssInj2sDOE
Aw, precious! I'm sure her informational writing can be relative, too. ;) (By the way, I love your chat! I'm so glad I bumped into it. I'm heading back through to get caught up on it all! There's something perfectly wonderful talking about great books and little kids!) #ecechat
This is why it is so important to pre-plan. We will be stuck at the bottom levels if we don't use our resources - DOK, Bloom's to build deeper understanding! #ecechat
#ecechat A3: My Ss love books that incorporate repeating or rhyming sound effects into the story. They really get into predicting the sounds and reading along with me. Ex. Tiger Can't Sleep and Old McDonald had a Workshop
A5: I love the power of the read aloud in #makerspace and #STEM ...using the characters and the message to help Ss become inspired and excited abt the possibilities of creation. #ecechat
It takes time and patience. And really a mindshift change classroom wide! But, you can do it! #ecechat Already Ready, I Am Reading, and Engaging Young Writers are my faves #ecechat
This is why it is so important to pre-plan. We will be stuck at the bottom levels if we don't use our resources - DOK, Bloom's to build deeper understanding! #ecechat
Another reason repetition is important! As a story is retold, it allows different layers to unfold and lends itself to deeper discussions and understanding of the story and characters! #ECEchat
A5 Non-fiction books really help me extend to the rest of the curriculum. In addition to story books, I will read non-fiction books as well. Our latest non-fiction obsession is space, so we'll read a lot a books about that subject. #ecechat

Love how you stated that your classes latest obsession was space so that's what you're reading. We have to be flexible to read what interests our students to build a love for literacy! #ecechat

A5 Itās often easy to extend your read aloud with math activities. Counting, finding patterns, identifying shapes are just a few basic concepts that can be included w/ most stories. #ecechat
A5 STEM activities! Coding or engineering. Here is an example of both: engineer a chair for baby bear & use ozobot or beebot to sequence & code the story in order and retell. #Ecechathttps://t.co/Tm3xTMkFjm
A5: Make the book available for the children! Place materials that relate to the book throughout the classroom. This will allow Ss the opportunity to experience and extend the story in a child-guided way. #ECEChat
A6 New book ideas and the list of questions to ask kids about a particular book (totally blanking on the name of the person, sorry!). I love these chats! #ecechat
A4 Honestly, my process is choosing the best read-alouds I can find. Those brilliant wrtrs & illustrators help me teach anything - if I'm open to finding it. We're pulled into the fun adventures of D Cronin's farm animals while enlightened by her huge vocab (negotiator!) #ecechat
A5: For social studies, we are studying community helpers. I am using read alouds to help my students explore various community helpers. In our writing center, they have community helper picture cards to help them write about community helpers during reading centers. #ecechat
There really is math in every book - just like math is all around us! We have to be intentional and make those connections for our young learners. #ECEchat
