#BadgeChat was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChat was born.
Hello- Aimee from Buffalo, NY. I was just introduced to @participate at #FETC Looking forward to learning something new. Can't stay for the entire chat though! #badgechat#newbie
I'm Noah in Denver. I ask a lot of questions and like to share my learning with others. Trying to change the world with Badges in K-12, Community orgs and workforce readiness #badgechat
Hello #BadgeChat! I'm Kyle. My "badge journey" began with scouting, traversed through video games, and on to grad school and verified digital microcredentials. Currently designing a badge-based employee training program.
A1: I think teachers should earn badges for different websites/tools that will help them be comfortable with various forms of technology in the classroom. The technology used should help them save time, and make learning easier for the students #badgechat
A2: Teachers can display the digital badge credentials they earn through social media, or perhaps blogs/some other way to communicate with parents of students (particularly for elementary school students) #badgechat
Mos def connect with Don! He's one of the most knowledgeable and collaborative people in this geeky space. Plus, he helps keep us international:) #badgechat
A1 Teachers earn badges for what they know about instruction/teaching, tools they use, and things they apply in their class-One thing to know Docs, another to use w/ Ss #BadgeChat
A3: Teachers should want to display their badges because it shows that they are comfortable with different types of educational technology/websites, and that they have the tools necessary to help students succeed in the classroom #badgechat

A1: I think the type of badges teachers should earn should reflect 1) the school district's vision and mission and 2) aligned to their pedagogy and teaching practices. #BadgeChat
A4: Badges can empower teachers to drive their own learning because it gives them the confidence in themselves to tackle challenges, as well as make learning easier for their students. This allows the teacher to have more control over what is learned in the classroom #badgechat
Randy Macdonald, Program Manager for Innovation Academy, CS & STEM program for MS & HS students in Oregon. Also program manager for #SuperQuest, the @OregonCSTA PD program for K-12 CS Ed in OR. I also currently manage the digital badges platform for @OregonCSTA PD #badgechat
A1: I get most excited about #teacherPd badges that help teachers adopt new apps to use in class with students. I wrote a blog post on the subject! https://t.co/I3vk75ZHLA#badgechat
A1: Teachers should earn badges for any self-directed learning or formal PD (#MOOCs, Workshops, etc.) which would add more knowledge and skills to their teaching.
#badgechat
A2: If a teacher has a Website, Blog, or LMS it should absolutely be there. I would also like to see my teachers either wear them on their name tag lanyards and/or outside their classroom door! #BadgeChat#ShowWhatWeKnow

New thinking here!!! Is it solely the earner's job to display her Badges? Dig idea of schools celebrating teacher accomplishments by sharing in the newsletter... #badgechat
A2: Display on their "web presence tools". We also acknowledge not all Ts understand "digital badges" so we also display badges as stickers on a board outside of the classroom. Top says "I'm a..." bottom says "Ask me how!" Mid is blank for Ts to place badges #BadgeChat
A2: Teachers can display their badges online in place like in the @OpenBadges backpack Or their personal web pages. I guess it would depend on school policy whether it's okay on their own classroom websites. #badgechat
@AJBloom2pnt0 brings up impt point: Display can be of physical representation of the Badge, not just the Digital. Hanging Teacher Badges outside classroom doors can contribute toward a CULTURE around credentials... #badgechat
A2 Our GSuite badging is rooted in the prinicpals of Monopoly - We've created a Googopoly Board to display badges - levels are represented by little green houses and red hotels #BadgeChat#GeeOpolyPD
A3: Teachers should want to display their badges to ignite the power that they are a lifelong learner. This simple act alone can spark a flame in another teacher. Hopefully, it will bring the world of education into PD flames. #BadgeChat#NeverStopLearning
A3: Teachers should want to display their badges because they represent the ability to connect their classroom to others online and their knowledge of production tools in a digital world #badgechat
Eh.. no. I'm still waiting for them to get to v2. They did upgrade recently, so now you can have more than one email, for example. See #OpenBadges Google Group #BadgeChat
A2: Yes! I like this idea a teacher's displaying their credentials to reinforce the value of continual academic achievement and learning to their students #badgechat

A3: Teachers sharing their badges and associated learning evidence can help to foster a climate of "collaborative competition" wherein teachers will get #PDinspiration from their colleagues #badgechat
A4: I think badges, along with certifications, give teachers a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. It is sometimes not enough to say “I learned XYZ.” But, give me a badge or cert? Something that I can show? Man- I feel proud! #BadgeChat#BadgeBling
Totally! And what about the educator for whom "you should be intrinsically motivated to learn" isn't enough to make them want to earn Badges? #badgechat
I LOOOOOVE this example so much! One value can be providing ourselves with a sort of "talent heat map" to let others know they can lean on us and to know who to seek out when we need help #badgechat
A3: The first thing that comes to mind is what we're doing here @oregoncsta , where were linking digital badges to the professional development units teachers earn as part of licensing requirements
#badgechat
A3: I've seen a couple districts dabble in recognizing credentials by using them to open doors of opportunity like funding their trip to a conference or pre-qualifying them for new tech in the classroom #badgechat
A4: Badges empower teachers to drive their own learning because there is a desire to gain more and expand knowledge and skills. Badges are useful for teachers personal growth because they encourage them to become more digitally competent #badgechat

YesYesYes!!! Love how you put this. I'd add in the elements of "Choice PD"...granular level Badges can allow for an unbundling of learning and putting it back together in ways that best meet individual needs #badgechat
A4: I don't know if they can drive teachers learning but they can certainly facilitate by helping teachers recognize learning opportunities and be recognized by a professional community #badgechat
A4 Yes - I set expectations for my staff to earn some, but not which ones- they get to choose that - positive peer pressure and friendly competition helps #BadgeChat
A4: Badges already do allow teachers to pursue #personalizedlearning goals. When you can choose the #PD that's right for you and your students, everyone wins! It creates a lot of positive energy #badgechat
A4 Our focus with badges is not on which training you completed, but which concepts you mastered and implemented. About more than just training - the follow-up #BadgeChat
Keep up with latest Badge reads with the free Badge Chat @flipboard magazine. It's collaborative so let me know if you'd like to be added as a contributing editor! https://t.co/HDRmDW1OSm#badgechat

A4 Well thought out flexible badge systems, shared competency frameworks and standards like Open Pathways will enable Ts to drive their own learning. But for traction, *badges need an audience* #PrepareTheBadgeConsumer Even get them get them to co-create #BadgeChat
Don touches on super mega muy important point here: we can dream about changing the world but MUST be sure that the world (audience for Badges) is included in designing so that Badge earners aren't excitedly sharing their Badges with an empty room #badgechat
