A1: What is this homework you speak of? Life is great in choir world.
Jack Reed, Assistant Principal
A1) I don't assign homework at all in my lab classes.
Amanda, 3rd! Doubt will claim me, but from a great district in western KS! Looking forward chat! https://t.co/TIxezp2rib
Letβs start with introductions: your name, your position, and school/district that (might) claim you!
sounds like your our official weather lookout
A1 I rarely assign homework & never for a grade. If I ask them to do something at home, it's to support a class assignment.
every time I have moderated an chat, the weather is bad.
Good evening !
Tonya Gaunt,Clinton Schools, ELL and Tech Integration
A1) Homework is for practice & only if necessary; not for a grade!
A1: Sort of. It's usually finishing up things started in class, or reading, etc. But some, yes. https://t.co/sH9iWymZ0u
A1: Generally, no but I donβt assign homework. Assigned twice this year. I have Ss determine if they need more practice
if all of these have Tombstone pictures I'm going to be fangirling out all night!! Great choice.
A1: I have assigned homework for a grade and probably will again someday!
ELD specialist/Edtech enthusiast East Central High School Public Schools
What's up with that??? Can you do a rain dance for western OK? https://t.co/TRBfNIdUAp
every time I have moderated an chat, the weather is bad.
A1 -- I DID assign homework...ususally to read a story or chapters of our book...with a quiz the next day.
tweets are my own 2nite & not represent my employer. Thought I needed to get that out of the way
A1 I try to make any "homework" be related to something they would already do, like watch Criminal Minds & look for story structure
April Stobbe, Shawnee Board of Ed
A1 I work with Ts...so I don't assign HW but I do help create next steps for my Ts to increase tech use in their classrooms
A1 no grading of homework; students get credit (or not) for completed assignment. I grade nothing. details https://t.co/LZAIePoK48
Beth Richert, Ed Tech Director, Clinton checking in.
A1) Early in my career I assigned for grades but after reading one of the books by Marzano I changed my policy.
why do you think so many teacher still assigned homework and grade it?
A1: I give my Ss time-management homework like college. I give them the assignment and the due date, but some do procrastinate.
A1 I think it would be fun to ask my S to tweet their "homework."
A1: When I was a classroom T I did NOT to a grade on homework
What in the Marzano book helped you change your mind? https://t.co/GxzTA7LT5j
A1) Early in my career I assigned for grades but after reading one of the books by Marzano I changed my policy.
A1 -- in ELA, if kids would read at home, we could have rich conversations & dynamic group projects IN CLASS.
Pre-service teacher at the University of Oklahoma. Glad to be involved.
A1: rarely do hmwk. We stay so busy in class, I want Ss to have some down time. If class time is wasted, it becomes hmwk.
A1. since I teach online, all the class work is homework; glad I don't have to seek that classroom/homework balance :-)
Anthony here! I teach math in Stillwater. Sorry for being tardy, I had to take care of a snake in our front yard.
Since my students are emailing me about it & completing it right now (due online at midnight) means...Yes! https://t.co/IJYRyCbWEb
A1: I did but I wouldn't if in classroom today. Would facilitate 'Work for Home (W4H)' instead!!! https://t.co/ZV7MhogOjK
A1: I don't in my current position, but I have in the past.
A1 All that said, I do ask some students to revise work at home for a better grade.
Glad to have you, good to see young and excited future educators joining.
A1: I confess I don't understand why homework has gone from sacred to anathema - need it be one or the other?
HM is practice for those who need it. I work on my student discovering if they need it & they assign to themselves.
...because they do what teachers before them have done & don't think for themselves.
A1: I do not assign any homework. The only work I send home is when they request it, and they do for extra practice.
A1: Every recent study of HW urges little/none in grades K-6. If given, should be 4 practice of new skills. https://t.co/96bPp1E3KD
Sorry, I'm watching Warriors make history...... What was Q1?
A1: HW was only given if the student did not manage their time properly. I did not assign hw, but Ss had to give ME bell to bell.
This brings up a good point - perhaps our responses should have included grade level :-) https://t.co/SPpJfm29bs
A1: Every recent study of HW urges little/none in grades K-6. If given, should be 4 practice of new skills. https://t.co/96bPp1E3KD
A1) Humanities rarely and for band, I give playing tests so if they want to play it well, they'll go home and practice for Hw.
those books drove me out of my mind
I never give a grade on homework.
A1: It is not a critical part of their grade, but the skill of keeping up & bringing back stuff is important https://t.co/2j3j7gpzSb
Rep. Montgomery tuning in. Consensus says I don't know anything about teaching so I'll sit quietly and read as the thunder rolls
Emily Ray, pre-service teacher and grad student at OSU. I'm looking forward to lurking tonight!
What about no grade for homework you do assign?
A1) Yes - although my students can get most of their work done in class.
A1 Our building has weekly practice sheets of 20-25 questions to help Ss with keeping math practice.
Hi there. Jayden Mills, Chickasha Junior ππΌ
A1: Assigning HW infers there is time and support. Are you sure both are there? My kids are little and we are strapped for time.
I know plenty of teachers who still assign and grade homework, lol. https://t.co/qHlYVngyK8
A1: I confess I don't understand why homework has gone from sacred to anathema - need it be one or the other?
The beginning of wisdom is the statement "I do not know"... https://t.co/kdSQQmdVKy
Rep. Montgomery tuning in. Consensus says I don't know anything about teaching so I'll sit quietly and read as the thunder rolls
So why do we keep assign students "busy" work to do?
we should do more homework.. Good to know.. lol and may agree.
I have assigned a grade when I made it mandatory for everyone. It is a small portion of the grade book.
Thank you for joining us and learning with us! https://t.co/NHDz8Zkhmz
Rep. Montgomery tuning in. Consensus says I don't know anything about teaching so I'll sit quietly and read as the thunder rolls
Ummm, I think it's dead in the street. It was right in front of our front door. They are the devil, it's in the Bible
Deborah joining tonight from . Sorry for being late!
A1) The last three years in my high school math class - 18 minutes of hw/night *maybe. Again most work could be done at school.
A1) Nope. Never did. If I'm the one who is supposed to give add support, I don't understand the point.
Hey . Amy Presley with Broken Arrow High checking in
We tend in educ to think that just b/c something is not the answer to everything, it must be to blame for everything.
A1 reading the textbook and one weekly writing assignment (brief); nothing else except wrapping up in-class work, usually.
Jump right in. We learn from pre-service teachers every week, some as young as 16. https://t.co/cC8MG18qR5
Emily Ray, pre-service teacher and grad student at OSU. I'm looking forward to lurking tonight!
Let's say we collaborated on this assignment! https://t.co/BHHLO5XWj0
thank you! I feel like I just cheated on a homework question! π³π¬
A1: My SS class was PBL, Ss chose to work more at home to extend not add to.
oooooh, I like those hashtags! "They have to write and each class."
See I'm old but a new teacher so I have NEW ideas! I may be 40 but my way of thinking is very new age.
A1)I orginize Kg skills into small lists, Ss work 1 list @ a time -when a list is mastered I sign it- then move on the to next list
A1 However, I feel that there are times that math practice needs to be done at home so that we can discuss it the next day.
So true. Many donβt have support or little time. Also many times the type is not deepening understanding
This REALLY should have been printed on April Fool's day because CANNOT be serious.
Hey, she keeps stealing my answers! https://t.co/sqOCr2CBAI
A1 All that said, I do ask some students to revise work at home for a better grade.
Wait - where did this come from? Did I miss a segue? https://t.co/S4ft7gCCHq
So why do we keep assign students "busy" work to do?
And that is where graded quizes came in. Kids figured out I wouldn't TELL them the story of the story. Had to read
Don't worry, I was late as well. Did you have a snake on your front deck as well?
homework equals parents doing it most of the time. I don't need to know what the parents know.
ahhhβ¦but what if the kiddo is stuck on question 3?
So why do we keep assigning students "busy" work?
A1) another reason for NO: it widens the achvt gap
A1 Homework was usually only if they wasted their class time and didn't finish
I think the important ? is why are you assigning the HW? Is it to get a grade for the gradebook? Purpose matters!
A)1 NO. "The Homework Gap means that many of our Ss lose connectivity the moment they step out of our doors" https://t.co/aOHvnBscqq
A2: I'd prefer an "incomplete", but community is very traditional. Change is hard when the new is in 11th grade
if they need extra help, it's my job to provide tutoring, not a worksheet
better late than never!! Always glad to have you!!
After the grade is in, we have their attention, huh? Teachable moment!
A2 I do give zeros for missing work. However, I expect S to do & turn it in for credit. The P and I hound them until they do.
Having internet issues with he weather :(. Going to have to jump off while I am up again
A2: via@justintarte: Do we really want to pass out 0βs like candy & say my students don't know anything after spending time with me?
That's a loaded reading of the Q? - "Do you assign HW FOR a grade?" = "merely to result in a grade?"
If they get stuck, I tell them "Good, it'll give you something to ask the next day."
Good evening!
Eager to join tonight's chat.
A1: Many Ss like and would spend lunches with me, voluntarily to get projects done
A2: I only give zeros to Ss who put in zero effort or don't attend performances.
I really want to read your answers for question 2 We are going to discuss our grading policy Friday, at inservice.
even if they donβt do any of the others??
I give very little homework. We do it in class and work from bell to bell.
A2: I think that Ts need to do everything in their power to get the Ss to finish, Ts need 2 grade their knowledge not responsibility
I read it to mean do I sometimes give homework and grade it. In which case, yes.
A2) Torn b/c if they can understand the material and/or objective without it, then what's the point? But it is accountability.
Now I'm scared! and are starting to respond in chorus!
A2 I have all kinds of additional assignments (reading, writing, commenting, tech) to use to make up missing work OR to get ahead
A2 I only take a grade on the writing...and students have a full seven days, so I will give a zero for that.
A1: I did assign 4 grade, but wouldn't. Research shows it makes Elem Ss dislike school & no acad benefits. https://t.co/0rwogSlogj
A1: I did assign 4 grade, but wouldn't. Research shows it makes Elem Ss dislike school & no acad benefits. https://t.co/727eOZshpm
Yes! My favorite threat:if you don't have time to do it now with me here when are you going to find time at home alone?
Thank you for joining! Grading like outlaws tonight!
A2: Ts need to state purpose of the HW. Busy work, grade book assignment? Can Ss pract correctly @ home? https://t.co/gPAma49bUU
A2) Our job is to educate & inspire; zeros are not an option. Whatever it takes to get 'er done!
This is a big concern in our building right now. If they don't turn in, I mark as "missing". https://t.co/qZ15Rm33QS
Every school needs an appointed weather lookout
A2 Mixed feels: They shouldn't win awards for missing work, but I still want them to do the work and learn. https://t.co/2BT375CSWC
A2: it depends, if the S purposely chose to NOT complete the assignment their grade should reflect that.
I'm getting so worked up, I'm forgetting to add !!
A2 HW is tough. So many of our kiddos aren't in control of their environments at home. Sometimes bad nights/weeks happen.
I think I'm the mean lady that gives zeros....
A1 3 or 4 times a week my reading s's take home a fluency page to read with their p's. Sadly many don't do it. No grade is given.
A2: Yes, for senior Ss. They have to get used to meeting deadlines in college and when working a job.
A2 cont. I mark it as "missing" to help the S remember to complete it. I always take late work, until the grading period ends.
So S's can choose to give 0 effort on assignments they choose not to do?
A2: I get in this debate on twitter often. Why are we spoon feeding Ss that chose to get the zero? There are consequences in life.
and believe the book was Classroom Assessment and Grading That Work by Robert Marzano.
I assume hw would track what my teachers did, who were the pinnacle of awesome. Likely volume increase with age
A2: In an ideal world, no - I'd ride all 150 of their behinds on each and every skill, bit of knowledge, etc. https://t.co/irvfbXmcBU
A2b: but "extra credit" is RARE. Purpose behind what we do - do that & we'll talk about revisiting concepts, no Kleenex points
A2 I always had a no 0 policy. Always had chance to make up and never a grade below 50
your involvement never ceases to amaze me!! Welcome!! https://t.co/Q91MEdfJKW
Good evening!
Eager to join tonight's chat.
Is the desire to teach a standard or skill? Then, no, allow the S to turn in the work!
the flipped classroom intrigues me.
A2 -- I told Ss if I assigned it, I was interested in their ideas & eager 2 read & grade. Then proved it.
A2: Phone calls to Ps work better than 0's, offering assistance to keep Ss on track. Ss lose hope w/ 0s
isn't finishing homework and turning it in part of learning responsibility? If teacher tells you to do it...you do it. For a grade.
Lol I was referring to a more universal "you" rather you specifically...
A2 having the additional assignments available as make-up OR for getting ahead is good way to promote time management choices
A2: Yes if grades are issued; better if keep e-portfolio and assess / defend their 'learning' - done or not! https://t.co/Xtvz15H3eu
A2: as a teacher in training I would never want to hand out a zero, but i also want to teach my students responsibilities.
If students learn that they still get a good grade even when they choose to not complete assignments why would they ever complete?
When I taught, I did too.
So if they have a high enough grade and they choose not to do a certain assignment thats ok?
-So great to have legislators like you join tonight's chat!
A2: The magic bullet is to "love" them into doing the work. Wish we could reach them all with the magic.
Which is why saying "do this tonight, no excuses, no make-ups" is the DUMBEST thing there is! https://t.co/Luq3fr5duL
A2 HW is tough. So many of our kiddos aren't in control of their environments at home. Sometimes bad nights/weeks happen.
A2: How many teachers are late on lesson plans and due dates... Hmm I KNOW I WAS!
I prefer to work w/ S on soft skills like deadlines via feedback, not grades.
A2) I think it depends on the student. Some students will respond to a zero and some won't.
Had my daughter create a today. I just cleaned up some minor things. Work was hers.
A2: No zeros, actually no grades at all, standards based, did they master the standard?
Oconners 15 fixes for broken grades is great resource for ne 1 wanting to revise grading policies
β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ https://t.co/6JcZorYPI2
was there even a better way to spend our lunch?? Lol your projects were always my favorite!
I tell them to skip the problems that they have difficulty. I have many who come with questions and we discuss.
that's true. I haven't ever really thought of that
A2 - Ss figure out quickly if we READ or skim or ignore their work. OUR response motivates their desire to work for us.
I give zeros to kids who refuse to sing. I even tell them just move their mouths and I'll give them a grade.
Hardest philosophy shifts is separating behaviors from learning. Traditional grades have both :(. https://t.co/YnLnSMIbuI
A2: as a teacher in training I would never want to hand out a zero, but i also want to teach my students responsibilities.
A2: Depends on how much HW counts as a % of the total. If small, a zero isn't all that bad. I preferred a 1-4 scale 4 HW/daily work
It seems that there should always be something to discuss in math. :-)
Agreed. Having grown up with a crazy parent...the unpredictability made it hard for me to had a designated time for HW
A2) I guess I'm just old. I thought the point of homework was to check to see if Ss got it upon delivery and could recall lesson
Sad learning that as seniors ... https://t.co/VuZRGdNI86
A2: Yes, for senior Ss. They have to get used to meeting deadlines in college and when working a job.
I use zeroes as place holders but keep in constant contact regarding progress. I always take late work. https://t.co/2hwNUEJCQB
A2) We should grade for understanding, not responsibility
A2 getting rid of disposable assignments is best goal IMO: save, revise, reuse, archive etc...but not trashcan
old policies requires so many grades a week
Kevin Hime superintendent checking in from Boston
20 years ago homework was to put a grade in the grade book
Zeros should not be permitted in if homework as value we must make sure every one is completely
There is, but they don't always know how/when to ask questions. Allowing work at home, helps them have talking points
A3 Parent contact, student conference, lunch w/T to make up work. Whatever worked best for that S
A2: I don't get a paycheck for having the potential to teach a great lesson. I get paid to show up on time most days ready to go.
Preach it!! https://t.co/UmnBU6VbsB
A2) Our job is to educate & inspire; zeros are not an option. Whatever it takes to get 'er done!
Can you elaborate on how that occurs? https://t.co/sj3IM3lhMD
A2) We should grade for understanding, not responsibility
need more chats like this one...I can't help but smile ear to ear when a new ? Is posted.
Lol generalizing is so much fun though! j/k. Sounding like a broken record...it's all about purpose of HW
Exit slips after the lesson, bell ringers the next day can measure this. All Ss have opp. to be successful. https://t.co/lOefmlG1v6
A2) I guess I'm just old. I thought the point of homework was to check to see if Ss got it upon delivery and could recall lesson
A2) Hard to answer b/c it depended on the assgnmnt and timeframe. Ss were graded on the knowledge they mastered not how they did it.
Some will turn in a half-assed paper and expect a min score. I don't want to reinforce that behavior either. https://t.co/3AvWyvrN1B
A2) I think it depends on the student. Some students will respond to a zero and some won't.
yes they do. What do teacher require/expect?
https://t.co/kE6P8M0xzu
A2) I always note an M in the gradebook then work with the Ss at lunch if it is an understanding issue. Will v. Skill sometimes means a zero
Glad you could show up! π
Then S has a reminder to complete. I take all work up until the end of the grading period (quarter)
A3: Try it ur own way. f u don't like my ways expln how you will show your work. Might be better your way https://t.co/ujg9x7MtwB
We should spend more time revising the same assignments, esp in ELA, feedback makes improvements, not zeroes.
A3: Well when a kid doesn't sing they do get a zero. It is choir. You gotta work hard to get a zero from me!
A2 IIf the work is important enough to assign isn't it important enough for EVERY S to complete it?
A2: I also did simple points. Ss always had options for alt assignments to make up missing pts.
A3) For playing tests, they have to play it off until they achieve at the level that is expected, for Human. it is a 0,
I have some S who won't respond to a zero, but they'll respond to lunch detention with our P. https://t.co/YQcRyl3d4L
Some will turn in a half-assed paper and expect a min score. I don't want to reinforce that behavior either. https://t.co/3AvWyvrN1B
A2) I think it depends on the student. Some students will respond to a zero and some won't.
A1: As a pre-service T, I definitely think that homework should be assigned strictly for practice
A3: call home is a pretty early first step. But it's best to prevent this from happening the best you can with meaningful assign t's
A2)Zeros=no individual conferencing, differentiation, or effort on my part.
doing homework brings the subject back up in the brain later on in the day which will only help to retain it better don't you think?
my boys know that Mom won't save the day if they forget to turn in homework. T's class/T's rules. :)
So is doing HW a part of getting prepared to be a productive citizen? https://t.co/LL20JKwIr5
A2: I don't get a paycheck for having the potential to teach a great lesson. I get paid to show up on time most days ready to go.
A2: For better or worse, if they go to college or get jobs, the whole 'whenever you're ready here's an 'A' thing doesn't fly
It is to recall the lesson, however, giving a strict grade is not always helpful for the student.
I approve this message :)
A3: We do a lot of in-class work time. its fluid... don't make "the score" more valuable than "the learning" https://t.co/THXnQX3tjS
A2 No 1 time shots. I may be 2 'new-school' but name many real-world scenarios where you don't get a second chance or a late notice.
I like having the students call, if youβre going to make a call, have them take ownership.
Too many times we dock kids because they didn't do something. But in the grand scheme, did they "get it"?
YES, exactly!!! All feedback, no grading! I do no grading... but tons of feedback, revising https://t.co/ueO9vnuxHy
A2: I always say that a 0 in the GB is a reflection that I've failed that particular student. What more I can do 2 reach 2 him/her?
A3) Students shouldn't be allowed not to do an assignment. Give them options and alternatives to show their knowledge.
Busy Work: Of no interest to S or T. Going thru the motions.
A3 is it fair that the consequence is they have to complete it with a penalty? They can't learn it if they don't do it?
A2) if I give up on them, they give up on me.
A2: I would never give a zero for unfinished work. This does not reflect if student knows material. I would make them finish it
A2: I've mixed feelings. There are 0's in college, but so difficult to recover. I do have Ss who won't work even w/ intervention.
Yes! So many of my HS students cared only about the grade...if it wasn't graded, they wouldn't do it! https://t.co/6802Adhk2Q
A3: We do a lot of in-class work time. its fluid... don't make "the score" more valuable than "the learning" https://t.co/THXnQX3tjS
Me too. I go back to "What's the point of homework in the first place?"
As a teacher in training, I am still unsure of what I would do. Something to think about..
A3: Having to go back & source correct answers is a big motivator to do well 1st time. They value their time
We have to make sure the work we assign is meaningful and authentic!
A3: Ss that returned homework out their name in for a bingo drawing, Ss that didn't sat with me to complete and a call home
So HW is less % of grade that other informal assessments?
would tell you feedback is one of the most key components to learning
sometimes, some sort of common definition for all of usβ¦
If I assigned it, I wanted to know what Ss thougth...I graded it...no penalty.
A ism. Responsibility isn't an OAS skill.
I'm with you. So, call me old-fashion, but I still believe in homework, the ideal of deadlines, and correcting mistakes.
I hand out treats to students who complete their work at home. We always discuss the next day. Treats mean more than grades to Ss.
A3) I kept parents informed,I allowed time for completion until I could not enter a grade any longer it was the Ss responsibility.
dislike the trend of not giving zeros until the no other choice point. They have an assignment, they do it. Learning to adult.
There are so many ways other than paper/pencil for Ss to show understanding!! https://t.co/N5A8cfVY5B
A3) Students shouldn't be allowed not to do an assignment. Give them options and alternatives to show their knowledge.
I accept late work and your grade gets docked slightly, I'm not here to fail you, I also accept corrected work, but not refusal.
A3 Phone call to Ps, To be honest, usually that solved it. My Ss had several choices for wrk and assessment Ss had no excuse
If I'm liking your tweets, I'm pushing the little heart REALLY hard cause I REALLY agree!
I dunno. I didn't assign HW. I was all about formative assessments.
The Supt just agreed w/ me, so (a) I win, and (b) the Apocalypse nears https://t.co/ewoqDyOvkG
I'm with you. So, call me old-fashion, but I still believe in homework, the ideal of deadlines, and correcting mistakes.
A3: as a parent, they lose "screen" time which they've accumulated from doing chores and table time (hw/reading)
A2: I'd rather give no grades (esp. for compliance) & focus on skills, improvement, etc. But, Ss & parents live for grades.
But, adults rarely get a zero. Millions will fail to file taxes by April 15 and will have a 5% penalty.
On a side note, TOTALLY digging the Tombstone gif's.
A3: My kids are in H.S. Me chasing them around begging them to play school is no longer in their best long-term interest.
A2: 0/100 doesn't make sense; an F should have the same 10pt range as ABC and D
A4 Some S learn responsibility from zeros. Others learn to give up & stop caring. You have to know your Ss.
Q4-Zeroes teach Ss hopelessness & helplessness. Too many figure we don't care...so why should they?
A3: I took not doing what is asked personally. My Ss didn't like to disappoint me. They knew I took risks for them.
but as adults, is there anything such as a hard deadline anymore? A penalty, sure. But a hard deadline?
A3: Some seniors lack time management skills & work ethic. Even when I give time in class. I have some who turn it in early.
Got to sign off. Good night (early), Gracie!!!
Late joining tonight! Had to catch up on the masters. I use he as a reward. You get dojo points for completing (5th gd)
and grades are worst forms of feedback ever invented. ugh. Tarzan-speak, 5-word vocabulary ABCDF
I have a senior in HS, she will tell me so so teacher is "impossible", i say what work did you not turn in? I know kids!
A3) My calculus class morphed into a no homework deadline class. Yet most students were right were they needed to be.
A3: I had competitive groups that earned incentives for # of points on each person who turned in work, read books etc.
A2 i wouldn't give a zero or 100 always room for improvement and you can't start from nothing
A2: 0/100 doesn't make sense; an F should have the same 10pt range as ABC and D
A3) They have to do it at another time. Our school philosophy is that "the consequence of not doing the work is doing the work."
A2: Really hard for Ts to assess S learning when they don't turn in work. Zero may not be perfect answer but neither is no penalty.
I know it already so why practice it? I don't know it so why do they want me to do it alone?
My daughter will say I want to stay home today I'm sick, I say what test are you trying to avoid? Get your butt to school!
A4 for a select few, it may. Not all and with my young ones, not really at all.
Where in adult life can you a=have a requirement that you get out of doing because you didn't do it on time?
A4 IMO, zeroes teach nothing. They destroy semester grades though. It's a vicious cycle, Ss can't recover so they give up
A4) It teaches them how to get out of doing work and how not to be responsible.
Agree. Know your Ss. Fair doesn't mean equal. Most of my Ss are teens. Disrupt their social time https://t.co/a5UX6rRmgT
A4 Some S learn responsibility from zeros. Others learn to give up & stop caring. You have to know your Ss.
If grades represent what a student knows, Iβm not sure a zero says much about classroom efficiency.
A4: No. But I have had some kids realize that they were failing choir and they changed their tune and started working.
A4: If a T fails to sign in, turn in lessons or misses a staff meeting, should we dock them a day's pay? Answer is NO for both.
Is the increase in homework for the lower grades due to the implementation of high stakes testing?
speak privately with the student and I usually learn enough to do what I need to do for the S.
A4 Late to ...Jimmy H, Future T Extraordinary...Im not one 4 absolutes. can a 0 be informative maybe. can HW be good? sometimes...
A2: not a zero fan. Zero (if for failure to complete) grades responsibility not standards mastery.
A3 this is a tough topic for me...my dream world would not consist of grades but feedback and communication that leads to growthπ
A4 Zeroes teach that students can just move on from learning they choose not to do.
don't get my products to a rig on time they lose 75K an hour, I lose a customer. There are absolutely adult deadlines.
I usually hear this combined with "more collaboration" - which sets up impossible contradictions https://t.co/TKdpua1FJM
A3) They have to do it at another time. Our school philosophy is that "the consequence of not doing the work is doing the work."
A3 Zero till it's turned in. Lunch det. w/ P until it's turned in.
Met someone at raving about . Good national recognition!
so much emphasis on valedictorian and things like that. Especially now that we can have 60 of themβ¦
but we can have homework, deadlines, and correcting mistakes (like in real life) but WITHOUT punitive grading
It was great to read all of these responses to the questions. Unfortunately, gave me homework and now I must go π
Linda Reid. Site Principal, Jenks East Intermediate. Hi, all!
Sometimes all HW and no in class assessments is the way to go....it depends...
love this! Got to see him in Edmond once - definitely challenging thinking!
We want every kid getting around to everything whenever ready, but ALSO working w/ others on everything.
Seems to me that we often set up false choices. We can base our work w Ss on their actual learnng while also teaching responsibility.
Side note - many in have district policies for auto zeros. Culture shift needed. SBG is well researched, but not supported
Late joining! Lauren Dill currently supporting the work of OK Districts and
A)4 Grades demonstrate a Ss respons. And ability to complete guided practice - ultimately doesn't show mastery level of concepts
More collaboration from who?
So true. In many cases, Ss have lost the love of learning. It's depressing to see
Many Ss have such a bad home life, HM is their last concern. We must carry them until they can handle a deadline.
A3) If an assignment isn't completed, the S has to move to the "help wanted" table until it's complete!
A4) Zero scores make it 5x more difficult to overcome than using a 50% scale; makes it easier for Ss to give up
A4) should we teach responsibility or read, write, add, subtract, multiply and divide?
A4- no, most of my students don't care if I give them a zero. My admin prefer we give 50's for incomplete work... Less penalizing
A4) Depends on the kid. Some will be concerned, some need to be reached in a different way.
A4: if your definition of responsible is you didn't do the job you were supposed to do - now you don't have to do it at all...
A3 I won't assign zeros either, after grading students will receive an I for incomplete and I will take late work.
A4 My s's couldn't understand the meaning of 0's and how many 100's it took to make them up. I always graded on improvement.
A4 Zeros teach NOTHING except how to be a failure. I can't make that zero up? Cool, I won't do anything for you.
A4: By in large, zeroes donβt teach responsibility, they just create more of a relationship gap between teachers and students.
True, but it isn't usually the collaborative projects that don't get done.
These may be great mindsets in elementary or middle school. By H.S. they all translate "just pass everyone somehow no matter what"
A4 Zeros give students permission to give up...communication gives them the encouragement to grow!
Big fan of personalized learning! Ss are unique and each learns differently. Collaboration can still happen https://t.co/HxgNDK8Rfz
We want every kid getting around to everything whenever ready, but ALSO working w/ others on everything.
If they don't get one thing done they can't properly move onto the next part which throws everything off.
Should they be able to choose not to do certain assignments?
Exactly! https://t.co/p4iXlp4E9U
A4 Zeros teach NOTHING except how to be a failure. I can't make that zero up? Cool, I won't do anything for you.
Some teachers do not send digital homework home because of students lack of wifi but send homework home to parent less kids
A4) Zeros give Ss the option to be lazy. Not on my watch....
A4: Some students would respond to receiving a zero but it should be a last resort.
A4 no. Zeroes teach Ss they can just skip the learning & take the F. That's not teaching or assessing standards
A4) 0 is an out for not working-how is that teaching responsibility?
A3) if a S forgets homework folder with lists on it they still have to be assessed. I forgot it at home doesn't work with my system
Just out of curiosity, for those who assign HW, how many get P buy-in prior, or do you just force it on families?
And Ts institutionalize that gap with their policy. https://t.co/U3E7FbAYbD
A4: By in large, zeroes donβt teach responsibility, they just create more of a relationship gap between teachers and students.
I like ELA because it is recursive. Same skills, concepts, more complex/indepth over time. https://t.co/YsqIllV6Xp
If they don't get one thing done they can't properly move onto the next part which throws everything off.
That pressure is def out there. Ss do get placed with "worksheet mavens" v "think teachers" based on this https://t.co/cOwqK4a00m
These may be great mindsets in elementary or middle school. By H.S. they all translate "just pass everyone somehow no matter what"
A4: What about having Ss set goals for the work that they have to do? Have them plan it out and work on it.
If memory serves, a calculus teacher at my high school did this.
agreed! feedback is good for growth; grades are vague AND scary, not good for growth... more feedback, less grading
A4) We have standards based grading. Zeros are useless for everyone.
Not if we are not running a factory line. We have to do what it takes not just keep them all in line
Do we expect children to understand the balance of what should and should not be relaxed on deadlines?
A5 None of what we do should be about punishment. Our goal is to facilitate a love of learning. Won't happen w/that mentality
I totally agree with you on this! https://t.co/SAzLWuFvMD
If an assignment wasn't important enough to let them make it up, it wasn't worth doing in the first place.
That said, the recursiveness makes SBG hard when you grade a skill in August, and a S gets it in April. https://t.co/YsqIllV6Xp
If they don't get one thing done they can't properly move onto the next part which throws everything off.
Now, now did we just switch to Wyatt Earp? Itβs the lesser of the two between it and Tombstone.
Thanks! A4: Zeros teach consequences. Accountability. I didn't give up on them, they gave up on them. Oh I'm making some mad!
1st we ask what is the purpose of homework. Is it to reproduce the exact info or to apply what was learned in a meaningful way?
A5: I think we need to get out of the of punishment in . Authentic lrng needs to take center stage. https://t.co/42832YHNXp
A5- it's more punishing to their gd to give zero, but more punishing to Ss time with time to redo. I like the later.
Not gonna lie. Sometimes homework feels more like a parenting test than a growth opportunity for children.
Sorry I was using you as an example of Q4.
Q4 Do zeros teach responsibility?
Sorry I've been with some upset Oklahomans tonight. Outside my district but they deserve an ear. I'm here now! Rep. Wood, HD 26
A5: It shouldn't be about "punishment" if you sent homework home it should be about learning
A4 most Ss who would struggle w/ 0s are ok w/taking them. In giving them we say it's ok not to learn. We r fine w that
A5 Are we really wanting to punish S or teach them they can learn and succeed?
We must acknowledge that there is a serious digital divide b/w Ss who have access at home & Ss who don't https://t.co/F8QodlbPtq
Some teachers do not send digital homework home because of students lack of wifi but send homework home to parent less kids
Again, what adult responsibility can you completely get out because you didn't do it on time?
so learning to meet expectations is Orwellian?
A5: We shouldn't be in the business of punishing, but Ss need accountability. Find the happy medium.
Glad to join in and follow along to tonight's chat! As always, I'm proud to support
student choice is powerful way to build curriculum: YES to choice; Daniel Pink: AUTONOMY, mastery, purpose
A5 Better lesson is to have the expectation it's getting done no matter what. It's what we do in the real world.
A5) Zeros punish the teacher because we can't measure Ss knowledge.
A4: when a student has a ton of zeros- it is time to ? Have we done all we could? Or did we right them off as lazy
That depends. Are you a normal person or a wealthy corporation? https://t.co/MBvGehZuYH
Again, what adult responsibility can you completely get out because you didn't do it on time?
A5 Having Ss who skip work come in at lunch time to complete is more of a punishment. They lose friend time. https://t.co/ov5s4vzoPn
If Ts don't know their students, and don't know their resources at home, then bad on the teacher. https://t.co/Kw3JiFFEex
Some teachers do not send digital homework home because of students lack of wifi but send homework home to parent less kids
A5 Hello...completing the assignment! A zero requires absolutely know thing of the students.
Right?? But are we really??
A5) Punishment is the wrong word. We give students opportunities to learn and we don't want them to miss out.
I don't know if that is what I'm thinking, I'm thinking is there different ways for them to show mastery.
Q5 hmmm it can't be about punishment. That's why we have a "zer
and I have had some cool disc on Achievement vs grade levels...but this req funding... https://t.co/el1YPiXcDf
A5: We shouldn't be in the business of punishing, but Ss need accountability. Find the happy medium.
A5: sometimes "life" is enough punishment on our students. Zeroes or having to complete an assignment is the least of their worries.
A5) Who cares about punishment? I'm concerned about learning
A5: If the assignments was worth assigning, it is worth completing. A zero lets the kid off the hook. We do it out of convenience.
True, that does sound back. Is consequence better?
A4: Since our new standards are recursive, we will build on what the Ss know, & repeat the skills the Ss don't understand.
I think we have facilitated a gross distortion of what grades are and what they mean! https://t.co/eoARcEdirh
Right?? But are we really??
They (students) should be able to have a voice in alternative ways to complete assignments.
Would love to see districts working w/ community orgs & libraries to provide more access outside of schools! https://t.co/SVTbW9342a
If Ts don't know their students, and don't know their resources at home, then bad on the teacher. https://t.co/Kw3JiFFEex
Some teachers do not send digital homework home because of students lack of wifi but send homework home to parent less kids
Hahahaha I hope my assignment isn't a punishment! Maybe that day I was absent and assigned pages 200-300! https://t.co/Wj9IBquGkg
Yes. It's a sign of failure for both of us - T & S. But I revile the touchy happy PD claiming magic fixes. https://t.co/EJkZ2HxqQy
I agree with that. I just still believe a zero is quite imperfect.
Welcome ! Glad to have you here tonight!
can I get in on this discussion?
A5: Giving a zero is a punishment to both T and S in the end. Defeats the purpose of the work if they never have to complete
A5: punishment is anything that reduces behavior... so the answer to this depends on how the kids repsonds.
I've only given 2 zeroes ever. So I sound tough but it rarely ever even comes up.
So you had something out of your control happen and that's why you didn't see the Q? Interesting. . . https://t.co/aO3gTvDSUk
and I accept that zero. I had it coming! I had a fellow teacher that private messaged me questions. So I was working!
exactly! enough punitive grading. give students THE GIFT OF SLACK and room to learn & grow: https://t.co/faeTOtPvRa
A5) 0s r usually result of not wanting to work or poor time mgmt. doing it is teaching Ss life skills as well as content
ummmβ¦not sure. This is a tough question. I am not really a fan of the zero. More of a revise and resubmit.
If we are fighting S's to do work maybe we should rethink the work we are asking them to complete!
A5: depends on kid. I believe 1 teaches Ss more. A 0 says I'll let u give up, finishing says WE got this. https://t.co/lDl0kzEFyn
A5 it can't be about punishment. That's what got education in this "zero culture" mess to begin with.
Actions like modeling and discourse help to teach character, not grades.
I think grace is a life skill, as well. It's one that I can demonstrate. https://t.co/pfpS6JzLlF
A5) 0s r usually result of not wanting to work or poor time mgmt. doing it is teaching Ss life skills as well as content
A5) But how do you actually get a student to DO the assignment if they didn't care enough to take the 0?
A5) I don't want a punishment or a consequence. I want them to learn
Soooo...can I just come clean and say...I was THAT kid, the underachieving zero kid. Zeros are easy.
A5 should we ever "punish" S's for academic problems?
So we relax all expectations? Just hope that they got what they will be tested on? Genuinely asking.
I think we are seeing the gap from what grades are to what they should be - big question - how do we bridge the gap?
https://t.co/UPCLwxKNwv
If we are fighting S's to do work maybe we should rethink the work we are asking them to complete!
A4 Too many times Ss are okay with the zeros as long as it doesn't kill their grade too much, I know I'm still there...
Right, that's why I pull them in at lunch to make up their missing work if they refuse to do it themselves.
Some public libraries check out a wifi hot spot to families for a school year. LOVE that idea!!
A5) An educator doesn't punish students with a score or work. A student not completing work may be saying something about the lrning
Agreed. The question was based off of a student not completing an assignment.
A5: Most often kids who get 0's are actually reinforced by them -they dont do work to escape doing work -getting a zero enables them
There's a magic fix? Where?
Zeros teach nothing academic or life skill wise. Sometimes, they still happen though.
A5) Why consider finding away for Ss to show mastery a "punishment?"
No, I totally got your point. I was making another point that some Ss don't complete homework because life happens.
A5: Again, w/ teens the "pain in the (er) neck" factor of having to take MORE time now is a big motivator. Redo usually sticks info
Q5 that's tough! It depends on the S in question. Lame & noncommittal, but honest. πππ½
No. We expect them to do the work. Sometimes, we hound them. We don't give them 0s and let them give up. https://t.co/QltED64yb1
So we relax all expectations? Just hope that they got what they will be tested on? Genuinely asking.
If they are at school, with a teacher that cares, they will get it, regardless of the amount of zeroes.
Then we need to shift our thinking!
If my kids don't have what they need done, they are removed from the group until it is. Then they rejoin.
That's the unanswerable Q? isn't it? I can justify any policy by constantly changing the answer to this one.
Sometimes I think we have. Measuring learning - but what is the most equitable way to do that? Tough Question.
Good question. Is punishing really our job? I don't like that word... https://t.co/BhZdrBfqAP
A5 should we ever "punish" S's for academic problems?
Feel as if my point was missed entirely. Maybe I'm the only one with obstinate students. When they refuse, and Ps don't back U,
It helps to have a systematic method to allow S's time to make up all missing work! https://t.co/U6NOQcaQQI
A5) But how do you actually get a student to DO the assignment if they didn't care enough to take the 0?
right? Teachers can get into knock down drag outs over to zero or not. What are we measuring?
always natural consequences for not completing your work. Our goal should be to find out why it is incomplete
assign 2 grades: 1-mastery of concept (SBC/assignment) 2- citizenship( per GP) Keep kids accountable for mastery & deadlines
You change the assignment, you chunk the assignment, or change the deadline. listening to Ss will help solve the issue.
Evaluate the situation...why don't they care? Have we given them a reason to care? https://t.co/PgyZ7Y1GJR
A5 should we ever "punish" S's for academic problems?
We make HW compelling & interesting. AND we grade it with respect.
I can respect that and bless you for doing it.
or offer more CHOICES: lots of students, lots of possibilities - curriculum diversity
I'm here.a)1-4 I do believe in O's in certain situations, they help with some but not with others,be consistent & fair
is rolling out 1:1 next fall. Supposed to have wifi hotspots for SS to check out if needed. !
Very true. Should there be a natural consequence like the S has to work during lunch to finish the work? https://t.co/zOqM96OM0U
always natural consequences for not completing your work. Our goal should be to find out why it is incomplete
I found my students solidified learning by correcting their own mistakes. Takes extra time, but pays.
A5) the answer has to center on engagement and real world relevance to what they are learning - 0s are a sign of no Buyin by Ss
That sounds amazing! https://t.co/281zQil9zr
is rolling out 1:1 next fall. Supposed to have wifi hotspots for SS to check out if needed. !
A5: reinfircement > punishment. Our goal should be to reinforce good academic behaviors more than punishing bad ones
I've found that Ss respond better 2 me asking 4 HW when they know I care & I've built a relationship w/ them https://t.co/MuhyPiZ2HI
A5) But how do you actually get a student to DO the assignment if they didn't care enough to take the 0?
So what about college? Will they be prepared?
A5: I don't give my Ss worksheets. Sometimes, I have them choose what they will do to show what they know and can do.
And that respects the process of learning...not just the grade.
A5: Maybe the goal should be to try to get students to commit to and own their learning instead of punishing when they don't comply
1.) F=0-19 D=20-39 C=40-59 B=60-79 A=80-100. 2.) F=50-59 D=60-69 C=70-79 B=80-89 A=90-100. ?
yes! student "carelessness" can be very valuable message to us: their boredom is not just their problem; is ours too
Whatβs home life look like? Do kids have care enough to do it? School is where learning happens.
love giving them options and ownership...
Ss learn HOW to learn & expect T to be on toes = yes
Not unless we're also going 2 punish 'em 4 their home-life & parent support. https://t.co/GgzFZMtuP8
A5 should we ever "punish" S's for academic problems?
This outlaw is losing track! I'm getting so wrapped up in the convo! Are we on Q6 ?
Some SS need more time for solidifying the lrning. Maybe do oral answers, discussions, etc instead of pencil paper assignments?
Sure, I can teach a kid responsibility with no homework or zeroes.
Exactly. We ask our Ts to provide revision opps until mastery is achieved. Yes. MUCH more work but worth it
As my friend says sometimes there are natural consequences for our actions.
YES!!! Citizenship (being on time, participation, work turned in) should NOT be a part of academic grade. https://t.co/B2ha13IJks
assign 2 grades: 1-mastery of concept (SBC/assignment) 2- citizenship( per GP) Keep kids accountable for mastery & deadlines
Agreed, however there will be Ss that will be a challenge regardless. Making a connection is a key.
Great answer. They expect learning to make sense.
Isn't about the learning not the process? https://t.co/Im4OTEUpm9
And that respects the process of learning...not just the grade.
This! Give them ownership and buy in! https://t.co/UaI8wTy0rO
A5: I don't give my Ss worksheets. Sometimes, I have them choose what they will do to show what they know and can do.
positive reinforcement is POWERFUL! see What Shamu Taught Me About a Happy Marriage
https://t.co/I597N4Ua9B school too!
Agreed. Busy work kills engagement. I'm a big fan of project based learning https://t.co/drXVZGw8gv
yes! student "carelessness" can be very valuable message to us: their boredom is not just their problem; is ours too
Late but I'm in...oh...Marvel's here!
I don't punish for academic reasons. I don't punish for not turned in assignments. Even my 0's can be made up.
Just like we demand contradictory things of Ss. "Think, be individuals, and do everything just like everyone else."
A5) if I know my students and their needs, I try my very hardest to make adjustments...not by GIVING a 60% instead.
I use to stay after school and the students were assigned academic detention to come until they finished.
Lol must be my personal baggage that makes me nervous about that word. I'm all about helping students see consequences
and those are the students who really help US to grow as teachers! (we need to grow too)
Q you have to ask, how meaningful is the work you are giving zeros for? If it's busy work, the means doesn't justify the cause.
also helps those who learn at different rates. Maybe they needed that extra time
A6 I provide feedback & opportunity to revise. My S can revise anything as often as they like -- just like in the writing process.
Target = easy to measure/spot; Ss know path to reach it + how to measure success. T = guide, not magician https://t.co/8csI11D1aL
Great answer. They expect learning to make sense.
I like it but I also try hard to make sure we do not assign it as punishment. It's an opportunity. https://t.co/7FATm1lpwd
I use to stay after school and the students were assigned academic detention to come until they finished.
Solutions for apathy? S's who refuse to attempt completing assignments. Can't assess air.
busywork is word I fear most: when it shows up in student course evals, I know I have changes to make for next time!
Or student driven - how can they show you what they know? Make it different!
A6 coaching, reworking, extra help, whatever it takes to root out the underlying problem
A6 Actually, revision is also a very important life skill -- perhaps more so than deadlines...
A6 go over the work with them, see if it was a failure to follow directions or unclear on concept. Give them chance to fix it.
A5It took having a child w/ dyslexia and exec function delays to learn BETTER ways to assess Ss!
A6: Bring them over to my table and discuss, correct together, learning opportunity
A6: HW should provide Ss a way to master the skill being taught, if they fail it's not mastered. Need 2 reteach, maybe 1on1
I ask my students if they think their zero's are a reflection of their knowledge or work ethic.
True! it also send a strong message of how important the work we assign really is! https://t.co/kJ0Tk96nQr
tricky when Ss need the physical & mental break of recess/jam packed after school activities. My struggle is WHEN?
A6 I'd rather bust a deadline than publish a bad article.
They do matter, & the 1st time they are pulled from a group & lose their voice they realize it.
A6) Reteach, one-on-one tutoring, celebrate the attempt; do over
Q6 usually a private conference to see what the problem was, then usually I offer feedback and another chance to submit the work
A6) I found other ways for Ss to demonstrate mastery. When Ss have choice they also have buy-in.
A6 If I think that was really their best efforts, then I haven't done my job. I teach it again and again until they get it.
I did find that I fought less of a battle with 0's when I went PBL. It's hard to give a student an absolute 0 if they showed up
Homework can be practice but if a student does not how then homework reinforces a bad habit
Love that you're reflecting on your practice! Ts aren't perfect, we can always make assignments better! https://t.co/sBbGiK7qiQ
busywork is word I fear most: when it shows up in student course evals, I know I have changes to make for next time!
A6: If they bring me effort and the work they don't get zeros in my class.
Homework doesn't need to require hours. These are opportunities to build responsibility, routine, and skill.
A6 Revisit and Reteachβit's my job to teach all students all the time.
If we are doing it right it would be part of RTI & we need to respond to problems we learn about https://t.co/kJ0Tk96nQr
tricky when Ss need the physical & mental break of recess/jam packed after school activities. My struggle is WHEN?
Exactly! I learn more from revision than rushing to meet a deadline... https://t.co/U4iSYWP4n3
A6 go over the work with them, see if it was a failure to follow directions or unclear on concept. Give them chance to fix it.
It's so hard to get a zero in my class that is why I get so frustrated when you say I'm not going to do this. Usually PBL.
a6: Reteaching isnt RE TEACHING if you are only doing the same thing louder and slower
On the contrary. The group part is the important part, and that's what they want to do.
and revision should not be punishment... we all revise all the time: that's the point, that's the work, how we grow
A6) If a S is truly trying there's other ways of allowing them to show mastery. Some Ss freeze on tests or have other issues.
A6 Allow time to retract, correct, and the continuation of learning! Maybe modify the assignment? https://t.co/5ve95azQ7G
A6: Students are in their prime, craving mastery and feedback. Revisit the same work until it's their best. https://t.co/BbWVlKyThn
A6) determine why they failed and what DOK level that are at then change teaching strategy, concept delivery, type of activity, etc
A6: For 9th grade, I would have them revise and edit their essays if the essays were not good enough. Different for each grade.
A6) relationships and feedback are crucial. Find ways to help the students get and retain the knowledge and master the skill.
A6-I give partial credit, CAR (correct and return) which is optional, and meet with them about it to see if they get it or need help
it's hard to fix apathy. On several levels.
we all do. If it's something we would appreciate, offer it to the Ss as well.
This depends on the Ss. For some, they have the home support. Others do not. https://t.co/Hkg95RdQ1V
so homework just isn't a practical reality anymore is what it's about
A6) They have the opportunity to revise and redo and turn in for full credit. Doesnβt matter hw/quiz/test. https://t.co/rvOaQzXVKY
Yes! Choice matters to Ss and Ts. When you get to choose, you take ownership!
Q6) provide addtl opps to meet objectives; that's our purpose as Ts. If they didn't learn, we can't quit trying
A6) Question them. Where are the gaps? My goal is to have them learn the concept not get a grade.
More that it needs to be focused. HW should make reaching target easier w/o being "busy" work. So...know Ss https://t.co/t2opiZ0Vva
so homework just isn't a practical reality anymore is what it's about
Q6 I also ask if they had questions....and if so, why didn't they get with me, since usu my kids have a few days to do assignments
I use a "grow your writing" revision challenges approach: let students choose revising focus https://t.co/iVswzuwLbR
My students have 20-25 questions/week as homework. I use to have that per night. That's building responsibility
Right! I rarely have to pull anyone from a group.
True dat. https://t.co/7V7it3QNNL
I did find that I fought less of a battle with 0's when I went PBL. It's hard to give a student an absolute 0 if they showed up
I teach online and something I love about online is way it leaves a trail, great chance for Ss and Ts to REFLECT
A5: Hopefully assignments and grades aren't about punishment. Hopefully they're about learning. That said, a zero is more punitive.
A6 Sometimes our best learning comes from reflecting on and learning from mistakes.
A6) reteach! I do BringUpGrades (bug day) and work w/ individ Ss while the others work on whatever they need even if 4 another class
A6: They always have the chance to correct and return. Please correct it, see what you did wrong, and learn from it.
A6: If students are setting their own goals, theyβll want to avoid failure. But failure is just fine initially.
Stereotypical but females are going to perform much better to structure and turning in assignments.
It also allows them a week to complete the work, letting them find the time when they can.
A6: Let S redo it so they don't miss out on what they're not understanding. When they fall, we should help them back up again
my Ss are old enough to drive, so they're also old enough to refuse to do work. Work we did in class w/ me giving personal help.
yup. And it's unfair to put in at end. I also write comments on each 0 to "justify" grade & document my effort.
Confused...did we say that?
Well, the cure for voter apathy seems to be hitting rock bottom as a state. How to apply to students....? https://t.co/IzL94ifZPK
it's a societal problem - how do we fix it?!?!
A7 if the extra credit supports effective learning on the information being studied, no problem with that.
A6: Am I crazy 4 saying that this shouldn't even be a scenario? I never failed a kid that tried.
A7 I would prefer a S redo the original assignment than come up with some extra credit busy work
A7: Elementary S no, HS S yes
It (homework) has a place, just not a prevalence.
A6) An "assignment" or classroom task should be viewed as a diagnostic tool. If the S isn't "getting it", intervene!
is working on incorporating blended learning into our schools, it's giving us a lot to reflect on!
A7: I hate it and I don't give it. If you don't sing the first time around or even care too, you aren't getting extra credit.
A6: Again, with the recursiveness of the standards, this issue can be improved. Build upon what they know.
Ok, I'm going to throw this out there. We all know Ts who are routinely unprepared for class or waste class time. THIS, we must fix!
A6) speaking of responsibility -as a T its my responsibility to ensure Ss succeed no matter how long it takes
I think it's one of the most powerful things we can teach students is how to reflect and grow!
that is exciting to hear! I've been teaching fully online since 2002 and LOVE it: time/space for all Ss
A7?! The heck, people - I'm still throwing down with and over Q3 or something!!!
A7 I'm not a fan. If EC exists, it should mirror the kind of work/expectations from other graded work. https://t.co/Hx3wUL5Zf9
Extra Credit doesn't normally reflect what a student truly has learned
A7: in my STEM class I give extra credit if the S does an outside project & presents it to the class. Then we can all learn from it
A7 meaningful EC is fine but I don't give lots...my kids are in all pre-AP/AP and it just seems to put more pressure on them
I value the PROCESS more than product, for sure!
agreed!! has been huge breakthru for me, FINALLY giving Ss way to think about learning, not just grades
agreed! it's all about meeting the Ss where they are and helping them grow to their potential!
A7) I'm not big fan. It has nothing to do with mastery of a skill.
A7: No extra credit! My Ss choose to take a zero because they don't want to do the work. Choices of consequences.
Depends on why they're asking for extra credit. Don't like the grade? Maybe. Didn't do the work? NO! Don't try? Sorry!
A6) All work For me is try it once on your own, then I help correct it. That's true if they miss 1 or all. What goes home is a 100%.
A8 I'm fine with it. Also fine with giving replacement assignments for tests/major project grades. https://t.co/HXMBBorL6W
A8 Only way to check for mastery is to allow them to be assessed on the material again.
a7: "Can i do extra credit?"
"Yes - learn the stuff I taught, and show me evidence that you learned it - here are some resources"
A6) We stay focused on that set of skills at home and school until we pass!
I would be lost in a classroom now; I've gotten used to NETWORKED space, not seats in straight rows! :-)
A7 Rather than extra credit, I like the idea of where students can get extra learning and stretch themselves!
A7)Extra credit to overcome missed work = extra work for me. Extra credit to enrich lrning is always welcomed. No meaningless grades
A8: As long as it is not an EOI or alternative to Gr. 3 OCCT, I believe in retakes, just like School Pics. https://t.co/ziaAzRYGvB
Xtra crdt simply for raising the gpa? SS may correct and redo. That said, some SS have buy in w/special proj showing mastery.
A7) if grades reflect respons. Most will say no - if grades reflect learning and the work reflects growth in DOK then answer is yes
Non-teacher growth in Oklahoma public schools outpacing student enrollment as needs change, https://t.co/P69HwiVm4F
A7-pain to gd, but if a S asks,I give. Also randomly offer projects for EC, but rarely taken up on it except Ss who don't need it
I value the PRODUCT more than the PROCESS...but the PRODUCT should just be a grade in the gradebook
Yes! I try to over justify assignments with rationales. I value meaningful work that has transference.
A7) no need for extra credit if you allow Ss to keep revising original assignment w/o big deduction
I resent the assumption we give zeroes b/c we're simply too lazy to make all of them learn.
A7: first Q - did they revisit assessments/ missing work? Q2: Which Target did they want another shot at? Q3: what's their plan?
A8: I think that re-takes are great. Average the two. Because mastery is the goal here.
A8) Mine correct every test. No need to retake since we grade on standards, so a grade doesn't matter.
meaningful is so important. If it's not relevant or meaningful, what's the point?
A8 -- My policy was U can correct anything on a test U missed, w book or other resources, for 1/2 points back.
A)6 do not mind allowing to redo as long as the effort is there. but cannot continue excusing lack of effort https://t.co/eB7SbP28jU
A7: it can have its place... But think it moves convo to pts and score and not learning i use is sparingly https://t.co/U7fZGu6DLc
A7) I graded for mastery. Extra credit doesn't make sense in that schema.
My thoughts exactly! The original assignment is generally more beneficial. https://t.co/Bej7lfhcWz
A7 I would prefer a S redo the original assignment than come up with some extra credit busy work
sadly, grades focus on product, not process, "final" exam, etc. so much stress for no good reason IMO
A7 I give extra credit for extra effort -- getting published, writing a letter to a school leader.
A8: yes, absolutely, but a mirror version. Same Targets, asked different way
A7) I offer it in various ways for various reasons but not often.
A8: Doesn't this go to T reflection on practice?
A7: No need. If S exceeds expectations, give pos feedback. Write them a note. Call a parent. Give them autonomy on next assignment.
if E.C. = more busy work then no. If E.C. = more learning/expanding horizons/more opprtunities/more insights, then YES, and YES
A8) YES. if objective is to master objectives & Ss are willing to retake - that's victory!
A9: I never discourage trying, so I don't have a cutoff ( see I can b nice), I only get angry when you don't try at all!
A8) All students don't learn at the same pace. Some may take longer to learn important skills. Let them re-take re-do anything.
Again we have to be more concerned with what a students learn not how you complete a test
I give the option of retakes and alt assignments. My retake is always a different version. I am from MO what you know
*high five* We stand united!
A7) We celebrate ALL credit; it's about learning! It doesn't have to be about a grade.
A7: At some point, Ss have to take ownership of their learning. This is what they need to know, so how are you going to learn it?
Oh man missed out on chat dear to my heart! Look forward to reading sorry I didn't get to add my two cents...
I failed tons of times learning new stuff. Especially games. Always had the chance 2 start from a save point https://t.co/8FHOmyYxAC
A8) if Ss are willing to put time/effort to improve mastery level and demonstrate it - hard to say no
A7: In H.S. "extra credit" is code for "I don't really feel like doing things your way - can I do something easier for all points?"
A9 When the term ends is when I quit taking grades. Once I am cut off, they have to be.
A8) yes, but must be fun, zany, interesting and must prove you mastered the objective. Usually by Ss who didn't need it anyway.
A9: no limit until last week of grading quarter - for full credit..
scary thing when GRADE becomes the point; students don't even think about possibility of meaningfulness
Should we every "just move on"? I know it get's logistically hard but we should never leave S's behind. https://t.co/GyMits2JIx
A8-only retest if I know they can do better. If not, just a waste of Ss time. Reteach and try something different to assess
&that is 1 way I changed my grading: 1st essay- all writing process gets graded. Later essays- final.
I think and can also help improve engagement, HW, and extra credit
A8: if Ss do not master a standard they should have intervention for a reasonable amount of time then reassess
A8) I always gave Ss opportunities to demonstrate mastery so redoing an assessment was allowed.
A9: If they do it, I'll review it...but I cut it a few days before grades are do so I CAN give them credit
Right! I just saw Q8! Slow down!
A9a/b yes, I'll accept it until grades are due for report cards.
A9 -- 160 kids a day...even one late paper per kid made last-min grading a nightmare. . But I still accepted late work.
I am glad I'm not the only one who does this. https://t.co/bqlrSzagSC
&that is 1 way I changed my grading: 1st essay- all writing process gets graded. Later essays- final.
A9: there is no late work in my world.
A9: forever, as long as it takes
Are you referencing your ongoing struggle with the original Mario Brothers again?
Was so great reading my Ss writings on what advice they would give my next yr Ss. LOL! Apparently, I'm strict! but they love me!
If we had system in which Ss moved based on a combination of their progress & readiness, we could have them decide when to take it.
A9: I take late work b/c it's a losing battle, but it does my kids no favors...
A8) I'm fine with retaking tests. I just want the kids to learn, it doesn't really matter when it happens.
A9a- yes I accept late work! Better than no work at all!
A9) when grades are finalized and due
I have created a process to help me manage this. Will have to share on my blog when I have time. https://t.co/8OnSN84OA8
A9 -- 160 kids a day...even one late paper per kid made last-min grading a nightmare. . But I still accepted late work.
Grade hungry students make me sad. We've trained the growth mindset right out of them...
A8 All Ss can have a bad day/do poorly. I would rather know what they can do, not what they can't . Retest.
that darn turtle on the stepsβ¦
. Willing to help, but have to be realistic too https://t.co/TBVMOCFgnr
A9 -- 160 kids a day...even one late paper per kid made last-min grading a nightmare. . But I still accepted late work.
A9 in 1st I don't have late work...we're all working all the time. In 3rd yes, I accepted it. Never 2 late 2 learn!
YES, process, transference, meaningfulness, etc. ... grades are more about compliance, not the long-run
seriously...why couldn't I have had ANY of these teachers with these zero and retake views?!!
A9) No time limits. If it's worth assigning it's worth grading.
A9: Kids who aren't organized fall further behind, refusing to ever 'cut it lose' b/c it's never 'too late'.
A9b I have a cutoff every 4 weeks, but will work with any S who is struggling.
A8) If it will help the S, sure. Who knows what they could have been through. Some Ss have some stressful life situations.
A7) and A8 were switched. I'm gonna need another chance to prove I can. I failed initially...oops
A9b: Until the last day of the 8th week of the quarter.
A8) If the objective is for Ss to master content, why wouldn't you let them retake it?
If you allow redos/retakes, be sure not to average assessments for a combined grade. Recent & consistent evidence is priority.
A7) I don't assign busy work, & allow redo. Shouldn't be need for EC. If the goal is mastery, grade isn't focus, EC is grade driven
A9a) Always accepted the late work.
A9) if the work has enough value to assign it has enough value it must be completed
If your Ss realize your high expectations of them, they will live up to that, or at least try, and trying is all we can ask.
I teach college seniors mostly: after 16 years or more of grading, compliance itself IS the problem argh
A9a I accept late work because I want S to learn. I can't make them all learn at the same time.
A9: Grades finalized and due.
A8: Do NONE of us have jobs or lives that require us to at some point suck it up and do something on time?!?
A9 -- had a friend who had Ss write an explanation of why work needed to be turned in late...she took that into consideration.
I remember classes with required notebooks with all assignments. fall behind impossible to get back up. Terrible.
Think about the ownership that Ss would have in the learning process! So powerful! https://t.co/9BflXMO0WM
If we had system in which Ss moved based on a combination of their progress & readiness, we could have them decide when to take it.
A9) Yes, I'd rather see it late than not at all!
A7) Ahh the age old? Do Ss need EC if we're giving them the time & chance to master the skill? Enrich - yes, remediate - yes EC - NO
Big paradigm shift but what a concept! https://t.co/bUBDkukwpK
If we had system in which Ss moved based on a combination of their progress & readiness, we could have them decide when to take it.
A8: Where are these fictional Ss trying so hard and falling short b/c mean Ts won't let them try again?! That's NOT A THING.
Ditto. I need to time to review their work and get it in the grade book. https://t.co/MJI8EpzgL3
A9b: Until the last day of the 8th week of the quarter.
Missing work, late work, failing grades - are all symptoms - to be effective we need to find the cause and address it
I have literally gone to Ss & asked, "Did you submit your work? No? How can I help? Nothing? Let's see what you have." Blah blah.
I've known teachers that say " If you pick up my room, I'll give you a free 100!"
A8) The purpose of schools is for Ss to master content, not assign "fair grades." Let 'em retest!
Tell me about ! Been preaching that for ever! https://t.co/WGTupaWXfS
A9) if the work has enough value to assign it has enough value it must be completed
Aside from not having your passport when you step onto the plane, most of life has wiggle room...w/ conseq https://t.co/Z1SGDEWq52
A8: Do NONE of us have jobs or lives that require us to at some point suck it up and do something on time?!?
mentality today: one and done!
ha ha, I am trying to be the teacher I wish I had had back then...being bored OUT OF MIND most of the time in school...
I agree, there have to be some parameters, plus you need time to grade and enter it all.
A8) Tests should be retaken. A failure on a test means the student doesn't understand the concept.
One way to support it is to have a process and product grade. If the process is 100% then devalue the product not the hope
A9: Personalized learning where Ss are shown what they need to accomplish, some ways to do it, and choosing their due dates.
but as adults, is there really such thing as a hard dead line anymore.
And if I assigned it, I saw some value in their work & answers. Otherwise, Why?
Yes, but we have control of our lives outside school, and years of experience. Many of our S don't. https://t.co/0FuuGHMjMa
A8: Do NONE of us have jobs or lives that require us to at some point suck it up and do something on time?!?
A9b) I accepted late work, or alternate assignments until the grades are finalized (Semester or Quarter)
The pursuit of grades adversely affects student lrng and narrows thinking. Ss chase high grades instead of deeper learning of subj.
I never got the notebook obsession. If I've done all my work and aced your tests, why?
I can't believe the number of teachers who say "After 3 days of being late, no make ups."
Yes! And technology can assist teachers in making this happen! https://t.co/gsBWszbrOR
A9: Personalized learning where Ss are shown what they need to accomplish, some ways to do it, and choosing their due dates.
A9) When I did grades I took them whenever they turned it in, I told them the later they were, the less likely they'd get graded.
"Is this for a grade? Will this be on the test?" Least favorite ??
A9: Mastery doesn't have a due date. If I stayed on Ss, I could get 60% effort out of them. No one said I had to give an A.
A9 Not accepting late work is like giving zeros...giving up. Keep encouraging students to grow & achieve. Never Give Up!
A9) Yes I accept late work. I will until we move on to a new concept. At that time I will need to make other plans for the S
A8) In my class we retake every week until mastered.
I don't appreciate you backing up your argument with logic.
A10) all Ss care about something. We have to find that thing.
What is the point of an assignment or test? An end grade for the student or a starting point for teacher reflection?
Would love to ditch the almighty A-F system. I want to know what the S's know, I don't care about the grade! https://t.co/urqargUDVe
The pursuit of grades adversely affects student lrng and narrows thinking. Ss chase high grades instead of deeper learning of subj.
Especially those of us that suck at note-taking...
I will NEVER forget 8th grade science at Monroney and that NOTEBOOK FROM HELL.
A10 Show them you care. Try to connect. That's all nice, but there's nothing reliably effective. https://t.co/JN7eKyrGrT
A9: We have to start teaching the child & not just the content area. Ss are not on the same level, & some will take more time.
I give XC in the form of extra recognition:they can extend their learning (usually in a silly, fun way)&share https://t.co/SOwrLCgfGb
