Hey hey join us for where we’re talking about athletics and other anti-educational activities /s
Q1-What math symbol <, >, or = would you use when you think of academics vs athletics(or something non-academic related)? Explain
A1: School is more than just the 3 Rs, athletics and non-academics have their place, but academics come first, so between = and >
A1-Wish it was =, but we all probably have opinions. I told students that brain was the most important muscle! Go get a mental TD!
A1: Academics >= to non academics We have to consider the whole child. Social skills are just as important as ed skills
A1 academics > athletics but I think they both have their place. Kids need both
If I'm slow with response with , I'm also trying to watch at the same time
A1: coming from a magnet, the "us and them" can be really decisive.Good to instill balance and priority into kids/+ model.
Balance is the key with academics and other edu activities.
Q2-How can academics help athletics(or a non-academic activity)? Explain or provide an example...
A2: Athletics and non-academic activities can/should be the motivation for academic achievement, must have grades to participate
A1: Not sure that computes for me. They are different. Obviously school exists for education but sports are great too
A2-Academics is the foundation of knowledge whether it's sports or whatever. Give you tools to succeed in anything.
A1- academics > athletics but I think both are important. Kids need exercise to keep them going/healthy.
A2: many non-academic endeavors take critical thinking. We Ts rule the school when teaching that :)
A2:Ss get to use whole body/whole brain when involved in both."Well rounded".Sports, etc give "team/ensemble" opportunities to Ss.
Academics >. Athletics can lead to bigger things. Academics is needed to play them. https://t.co/bnF3OFrGdv
Q1-What math symbol <, >, or = would you use when you think of academics vs athletics(or something non-academic related)? Explain
A2: Be understanding and give encouragement when a S misses class for sports or band etc
A2 - Academics help athletics because the discipline to become great at a subject takes practice and time. https://t.co/jqgv5QY1mk
Q2-How can academics help athletics(or a non-academic activity)? Explain or provide an example...
Q3-How can athletics(or a non-academic activity) help academics? Explain or provide an example...
A2 - Athletics provide incentive. They provide a near instant gratification of hard work. Enable it with academics.
A2: Activities Ss chose to participate in show what S is interested in. Can inform
A2- Athletics and extracurricular activities needs to exist to promote student buy in. There needs to be balance.
A3: Teamwork, collaboration and competition can do wonders to help kids succeed in academics.
A3-Can give student opportunity to apply knowledge. Force equals mass time acceleration. How much to score a goal?
A3 athletics can be a great mental break, clear the mind, develop goals. Athletics takes practice, so does academics
This is true. I think this is why students that are involved are more engaged in school in general and do better.
My concern with this whole convo is the perception of sacrificing one for the other does it happen?
A3 - Ath. help acad. because during season study habits form. With Ts support, Ss stay motivated past season
A3: Make connections! Have S athletes study math and read info text to improve performance
Q4-Why don’t schools/districts “put on a pedestal” or have trophy cases for high academic achievements like athletics?
A3:For some Ss=motivation to earn passing grades.
A3- Athletics can help students understand how to finish strong. Finishing strong is coachable https://t.co/IWKQXS1hYg
. it absolutely does! Some Ss do the work in season only to stop once season is done, some Ts have a similar attitude
A4: They dont? Dont MSs and HSs have banners that they fly in their gyms?
A4 - There lies the problem. Academics aren't sexy compared to sports. It's a mind set that needs to shift.
A4: Often we have honor roles, dean’s lists. Sports satisfy a different need in the community maybe
A4: Some schools are starting to go for that, more schools need to realize that the academics go further https://t.co/UDdqcOjslS
Q4-Why don’t schools/districts “put on a pedestal” or have trophy cases for high academic achievements like athletics?
A4-Academics don't give as many medals/trophies and press doesn't cover it like sports.
A4: The academic achievements trump a conference championship any day, and this is coming from a former coach
A4: do we have a place to celebrate our STEM and robotics comp team achievements?
Tying eligibility to grades is important, but extrinsic
shifting how we handle academic accomplishments is key.
I 100% agree. One thing I don't miss about coaching is the poor attitudes from Ss and Ts alike in this regard
How can we change this in Nevada? https://t.co/1WAMQZ8K4J
A4-Academics don't give as many medals/trophies and press doesn't cover it like sports.
A4:That's a question of culture. Some schools have wall of fame, etc.Magnets tend to celebrate grades since -sports but any can.
A4: Valedictorian is another example of a pedestal. Is it helpful?
A4 I love what does. I’m always seeing shout outs at school for academic championships. They celebrate Ss
Q5-What would you do in order to ensure the “A” in education stands for Academics? (think culture)
A4- Who says schools don't put academics on a pedestal. In Boston, my debate team had "uniforms" https://t.co/v8UStPQtnd
A5 - Finding ways to counter the media attention athletics get. More highlights on academic success https://t.co/01RfvASnjt
Q5-What would you do in order to ensure the “A” in education stands for Academics? (think culture)
A5: Support your Ss in all endeavors, whether it's academics, a sport, a club, and the academics will come
A5: I think A can stand for many things- accountability, attitude, aptitude, as well as academics & athletics. Whole child!!!
A5: Value each Ss inner voice. Make ideas sexy.
Keep it up for ALL academics!
A5-Getting parents & community involved in academics. That's why I like ...requires involvement for value & success
Thank you for joining tonight’s on Academics vs Athletics(or a non-academic activity)
Continue the conversation by using the hashtag all week long! See you next Monday @ 8pm PST.
A5:Academics as engaging as extra curriculars.Make Ss excited to be part of the A-team!
. Love it! But does community support them as much as they do athletics? Need a change in mindset I guess.
Perhaps its helpful when academic achievement means more than high grades
A1: A loaded ?. Everything that takes place in our schools is important. It's all important. Support kids in whatever they do.
