Kanako here joining in from Vietnam. I'm from Japan but I grew up living abroad and I identify as a Third Culture Kid (TCK). I also didn't learn to speak English until I was 10! #pln365
A1 - that whatever you learn in school may not be used in your job and that you will constantly evolve in your roles. So adaptability and creativity is key #pln365
A1: finances...how to balance a checkbook is critical. People should still know how to do this. In addition, varying perspectives. In the world we live in we must understand there are multiple ideas and ways to do things. #pln365
A1 my goal for all S's is they will vote as informed citizens and take informed actions in a civic minded way to make their world around them better #pln365
#pln365 Listening skills. Taking the time really listen- respond nor react- be calm and ask themselves in times of frustration or stress “facts or feelings” - I want rhem to find strategies for personal reflection and calming oneself
Merissa from TX jumping in.

Taking constructive feedback and improving yourself with it.
I have never worked at a job where getting along with people was not a factor.
#pln365
A1) How to effectively communicate with others (conversations or discussions). We are always interacting with other people around us, it is crucial that Ss learn to express themselves in a way that allows others to understand them! #pln365
A1: The difference between not knowing and not knowing yet!! The capacity to keep going even when it gets tough - to push through set backs and to find a way through the hard. #pln365
Hey #pln365! Just got back from a Candidate Forum for our local school board. Interesting discussion.
One interesting fact about me: I proposed to my wife on the beach on Key West!
A1 #pln365 Empathy- walking in someone else’s shoes- really understanding another’s plight another’s mindset- this makes us stronger and more self-aware as well
A1 For every action, there is a reaction. You made a choice, and every choice has a consequence. Those consequences can be positive as well as negative. If you don't like the consequences, change something. Only you ultimately control you path. #pln365
This is a good one and something most adults could benefit from too. I like how you pointed out how you become more aware of yourself when you are empathetic towards others. #pln365
A1: we do a lot of restorative justice. As well, when I deal with conflict and issues in classrooms, Ss must take ownership of their part of the conflict. From there, there must be mutual understanding of the other. #pln365
A2 allowing students to interact with each other as much as possible. Those without the skill will make themselves known either overtly or covertly #pln365
By practicing social skills and modeling them daily.
Having a problem with another S? Take it to the conflict corner and talk it out.
Need to work in a group? I will help facilitate the dynamics and assignment so that you have to create something together.
#pln365
Taking feedback is so important. Ultimately, receiving feedback is a great thing especially because someone took the time and made the decision to provide us with food for thought. #pln365
A2: I try to model perseverance. Sometimes we make the mistake of teaching concepts or skills making them seem easy. We need to model making mistakes and learning to push through and be better #pln365
A1: we do a lot of restorative justice. As well, when I deal with conflict and issues in classrooms, Ss must take ownership of their part of the conflict. From there, there must be mutual understanding of the other. #pln365
Openly discussing awareness, breaking bad habits, moving past arguments and teaching them strategies to listen, breathe, talk about things with respect and mindfulness- model this in my relationships with every student and colleagues #pln365
Have to allow time and space for students to have authentic interactions with each other in order for his to happen. No sitting quietly at your tombstone (desk in a cemetery seating setup) #pln365
A2: In the classroom, I have tried to make our environment a community of learners where each S is responsible for themselves and others. In sports, we coach to develop virtuous individuals and a 'pack' mentality for the team. #pln365
Q3: One way to improve student achievement is to help make students more self-aware. How have you helped students who struggle with confidence reveal their undiscovered natural gifts? #pln365
A2: I speak to my Ss about my life and responsibilities. I talk to them about their course load/sports/activities/responsibilities and try to build that understanding of what is important. #pln365
A2 #pln365 Rolling eyes, whispers, snarky comments- these I hear and see from students and teachers - the only way to model mindfulness for students is to make sure my interactions with them are positive and meaningful- we have to remember students see everything
A2: Great read alouds with themes of perseverance/determination, helping Ss set high goals, and carefully supporting/equipping my Ss as they step through their challenging situations. #pln365
A3: By making the time to sit with them uninterrupted and listen to their hopes, dreams, hurdles, obstacles, goals and experiences. After getting to know them, I've now got a solid foundation to build upon. How can I believe in my students if I don't know them? #pln365
A3: Celebrate successes no matter how big or small. Drive their interest and let them know they matter. Utilize positivity and greatness always. #pln365
A3 make sure I notice their strengths and not just their deficits. This helps me bring to mind things they may not notice—especially if everything around them is rooted in deficit thinking #pln365
A1) #pln365 this quote here summarized everything for me. I want all of my students not to try to fit in or limit their potential because of those they are around.
Find ways to accent their strengths and use those!
Allow students to shine in their own ways.
Provide many opportunities for students to explore their talents through Genius Hour and other hands on learning experiences.
#pln365
Q3: One way to improve student achievement is to help make students more self-aware. How have you helped students who struggle with confidence reveal their undiscovered natural gifts? #pln365
The most natural way is to give students choice when completing assignments...art, essays, poetry, making movies, writing lyrics to songs, etc. They will be authentically drawn to and be successful if they like it and make connections. #pln365
A2 It's all about accountability. Ticket system reinforces positive choices that the class chose the first week. Praise never goes out of style. Combine the 2 so they are aware of what they did right. #pln365
Q3: One way to improve student achievement is to help make students more self-aware. How have you helped students who struggle with confidence reveal their undiscovered natural gifts? #pln365
A3: As you said, we have to make that connection with the S. We can preach from the bully pulpit, or we can get beside them and guide them. Which one would you listen to? #pln365
A3: Celebrating achievements no matter how big or how small. Validating emotions and talking through them. Sharing personal stories of struggle and hardships to let them know they aren't alone. Most importantly, SHOW them you care about them. #pln365
One minute check in’s- I meet with everyone for at least 1-min every week, one on one and purposeful talk with tables helps everyone have a say #pln365 sentence stems help the conversations get started and roles makes sure everyone is heard
Q3: One way to improve student achievement is to help make students more self-aware. How have you helped students who struggle with confidence reveal their undiscovered natural gifts? #pln365

A4 proud of the PLNs and smashing of traditional practices @rokstar19 & I have built with #2menandabook & still chasing that official admin role #pln365
Proud of becoming an AP at the junior high level and being involved with such great educators on Twitter. Obtaining my doctorate is my goal eventually. #pln365
A4: I have begun to get my Ts and Ss exposed to data. We have been using data at the forefront of our conversations, reasons behind what we are doing, etc. Goal: continue to create better home/school relationships. #pln365
A4: Engaging in reflection on #pln365 has inspired me to form great connections as I've taken control of my own professional development. An elusive goal for me has been writing my own book. Perhaps how I've increased my own awareness through #pln365 might be a good topic?
A4: Proud of how the leadership initiative at school is growing. Especially seeing the results of our first ever #OLAchats. Still working to be creative and innovative so that I can make a profound difference in our school. #pln365

A3 Connect with them. They need to know who I am before they will take that chance and thus be more open to make the effort to try something new.
I start each day in my pull out class with a journal prompt. They write, which they don't like, they share, then I share. #pln365
A4: great question as we think of the students before ourselves. Accomplishment is seeing my kids developing and standing 4 themselves. Elusive goal for now is getting them to garner more skills outside of the education framework because there simply isnt enough time #pln365
A4 I completed my Master's in Ed Leadership last Dec. But, Everytime I hear a S say they love school = 😍
I've yet to find a consistent rhythm to blog nor to write a children's book #pln365
If anyone is willing and able to participate in our 2nd #OLAchats on Sunday, I would greatly appreciate it. All of your knowledge is shared with our developing S leaders who may even participate in the chat with us. #pln365
A2) provide lots of opportunities for students to communicate with each other by asking lots of clarifying questions and listening to each other. Communication is key! #pln365
A4 I acquired 10 Chromebooks and a charging station last year through a PTSO grant & Donors Choose. My students are amazed I think that much of them that I would do that.
I have a book I've written for young children to introduce LOA... but haven't taken the next step. #pln365
Paul, those are 2 things that are difficult for many to find and even more challenging to maintain. It is so easy to get sucked up in the sponge of negativity and forget what an accomplishment that truly is. #pln365
It was the perfect part time job for a teacher... Meeting lots of cool people... But nothing beat bringing young children face to face with the Big Cheese for the first time. Cool perks too... #pln365
