I'm Katie Manzanares and I am an Apple Distinguished Educator teaching 6-8th STEM & Engineering in CO. My school has 1,500 kids and 42 languages spoken! #AppleEDUchat
I’m Mitch, a high school ELA teacher & Apple Distinguished Educator from Northwestern Pennsylvania. Woke up to more snow again today in Erie, bringing us just shy of 200 inches for the season. I'm happy to be co-moderating tonight with @mstechgoddess#AppleEDUchat
Hi #appleeduchat! Casey here. I am the Dir. of Technology Innovation & #STEM programs @RoseTreeMedia just outside of Philadelphia. Looking forward to chatting with everyone tonight!
A1: I’m constantly motivated by my students and the teachers around me in my PLN. I like to continually reach out to others and adapt/integrate their new ideas. I’ll try anything once! That’s what makes for a great learning experience. #AppleEDUchat
A1: I am motivated by collaborating with other professionals. I am always open to new ideas, methods, and tools! Being a STEM and Engineering teacher means trying to stay 1 step ahead of my students. #AppleEDUchat
A1. My own kids and the students in my district. Everything I do as a professional puts students first. I want to be better and make our district better so our students have better experiences and leave better prepared for this world! #AppleEDUchat
A1: As simple as it sounds, my students motivate me to be better. I want the best for them. Otherwise, my co-teachers and colleagues motivate me to be better!
#AppleEDUchat
A1. Anyone who knows me also know that I am competitive so I wouldn't be telling the truth if I didn't say my colleagues motivate me to be better! #AppleEDUchat
A1: I am motivated by twitter PLN and teachers / administrators who challenge me to continuously grow and develop as a teacher. My Ss motivate me daily to create a fun, positive, and safe learning environment for them to learn the English language #AppleEDUchat
A1. It’s been said, the students and my own desire to be better. They go hand in hand. My bio says, If I hate it, why would my students like it? It/they motivate me to be better. #AppleEDUchat
A1: The idea that we have a responsibility to prepare our Ss as best we can for a future that we do not know so they can make it better! Also my Ss, my #ADEdu colleagues, & all of my educator friends & mentors - shoutout to @ckklynen & @MargeryCovello! #appleeduchat
A1 I think if you really love what you do, you should motivate yourself to a certain degree. The students and my colleagues also - it’s hard not to want to be better for everyone involved. It’s a team effort. #AppleEDUChat
A2: I reflect and make changes to my environment for student success. If I am complacent in my job, students will not be successful and will be teaching outdated information. I enjoy making my kids the Tech-sperts and they enjoy the spotlight! #AppleEDUchat
A2: Not only is education changing but the world around us is also advancing faster than ever. It’s important for teachers to continually evolve learning environments so students are suited for life outside the classroom. Check out some potential ed tech influences! #AppleEDUchat
A2: Equity. Not everything in your teaching environment will be conducive to learning for everyone. By reflecting, adjusting, and modifying you are constantly giving each learner what they need. #AppleEduChat
#AppleEDUchat A2: Every student is unique as a learner and through reflection we can strive to adapt our teaching and environments to reach the needs of all learners.
Things are constantly changing because the students are not the same from year to year, technique, technology, and methodology are always being changed. #AppleEDUchat
A2: I’d argue that NON reflection is not possible. We are always evolving. Even at a minimal level, there’s some reflection and change. Best case: adapt to culture of students w/o compromising learning outcomes. #appleEDUchat
A2: I make a weekly @Flipgrid reflection video to "talk" about how the week went: lessons I would change, where I saw students struggle, content that needs to be remediated for the following week, supports I need to add to centers.. #AppleEDUchat
A2. Reflection allows us a professional educators to determine the effectiveness of our practice. Room layout, lesson design, the order you ask questions in a discussion, the technology you used, the way you responded to a tough question...all require reflection #AppleEDUChat
A2: Students and classroom environments are dynamic! To be effective you must be willing to change and adjust your practices to meet the needs of your students! #AppleEDUchat
A2: With change comes growth & progress for both us & our students. Also, as we model this process for our Ss we are also teaching them about growth mindset. #appleeduchat
A2: We can always improve the practice of teaching and learning. Reflecting not just by yourself, but with your peers and learners makes everyone vested in your shared mission. #AppleEDUChat
A2: I make a weekly @Flipgrid reflection video to "talk" about how the week went: lessons I would change, where I saw students struggle, content that needs to be remediated for the following week, supports I need to add to centers.. #AppleEDUchat
A2: As we engage in PLNs, conferences, and academic work, our practices should shift. We get to know ourselves, our Ss, and our work better. Too, the world is constantly in flux, and we must be able to respond to prepare our Ss.
#AppleEDUchat
What a cool idea. What do you do with your video? Do you share with anyone or come back to review them at a later date or anything like that? #AppleEDUchat
A2: If we don't reflect and try to improve a little each day, we aren't doing what we ask our kids to. We need to model what being a good learner looks like #AppleEDUchat
A2: I make a weekly @Flipgrid reflection video to "talk" about how the week went: lessons I would change, where I saw students struggle, content that needs to be remediated for the following week, supports I need to add to centers.. #AppleEDUchat
A2: Every time we teach a lesson, even if we will be repeating it with a class later, there is something that you realize can be improved. I am always thinking about how I can have more student engagement, more organization, better understanding, etc. #AppleEDUChat
A2 Everything is evolving - technology, teaching methods, facilities, etc., and at a much quicker pace compared to the past. Old methods either don’t apply or don’t always work anymore. #AppleEDUChat
A2 (part 3): ask students for their feedback on a lesson, project, or experience. Allow them to offer feedback in different ways (Clips, written, oral) Adapt accordingly. #appleEDUchat
A3: I’m a huge advocate for teachers establishing brief mental health breaks from the school environment. Plan a weekend getaway, pamper yourself, or do something with family or friends. Educators need to take care of themselves in order to be better for students. #AppleEDUchat
A3: I like to enjoy meeting up with colleagues (former and present). I am a very social person and reconnecting outside of school is good for my soul. I also get out and enjoy Colorado every chance I get! #AppleEDUchat
A3. I turn to my professional learning community. For me that is the people I work directly with, the ADE Community and sometime social media. Facebook and Twitter for inspiration. #AppleEDUchat
A2 cross collaborating for teachers is as important for teachers as it is for students. It brings new ideas, relevance, and makes us all stretch in our learning #AppleEDUChat
A3: I allow myself a time and place to be frustrated/tired/"over it"/etc. Holding that in is healthy for no one. Once that time has passed and I have it out of my system - I move forward. #AppleEduChat
A3: Sometimes simply taking a weekend to unplug can be so refreshing! Also getting to attend conferences and connect with people from many learning environments can be refreshing in a different, and also great way! #appleeduchat
A3: there’s also value in slowing down and having time as educators to create and imagine, distraction-free. Release time is ideal or purposeful time management. #appleEDUchat
A3: I love to exercise or go for a long run. Also attending conferences inspires and motivates me (just saw @burgessdave last Saturday!) I connect with my Twitter PLN for ideas and enjoy observing other teachers teach #AppleEDUchat
A3 Talking with my colleagues always helps me - they have their moments too and sometimes share the same frustrations. They also provide different perspectives and offer solutions. #AppleEDUChat
A3: I try to mix it up in my class...vary assessments, and get them up and moving. Personally, I work out and and set goals for personal growth like #appleteacher#AppleEDUchat
A4: I’m constantly looking for ways to re-innovate and redesign what I do for my students. My best resource will always be reaching out to my PLN. I think conversations with fellow educators are the best way to flush out ideas and discover new and exciting methods. #AppleEDUchat
A4: My "go-to" items this year have been Twitter and my new ADEs! Twitter makes it easy to connect with other educators, and it also has come in handy to connect with companies and get questions answered a time or two for students in robotics! #AppleEDUchat
A4: My biggest go to resources have to be my #CoppellDLC teammates. They are some of the most passionate and creative educators I’ve ever been around. I’m very lucky to be a part of this team. #AppleEDUChat
A4: Twitter is a big one for me
I love reading blogs and listening to podcasts. I also use my professional communities like @iste@AACTconnect and @NSTA#AppleEDUchat
This is also one of my favorite things to do. My district has implemented a differentiated supervision model to replace traditional formal observations, & one component allows teachers the option for peer-to-peer observations that cross disciplines and grade levels. #AppleEDUchat
A4 Twitter, as always. Conferences are a big help - they provide a closer look at how other institutions do things and give me a chance to make comparisons. #AppleEDUChat
Last school year I presented Twitter at an in-service at my school. Instead of just talking about possible uses, I created a checklist and had teachers create accounts and start tweeting from our session. I can think of about 10 who've continued using it ever since. #AppleEDUchat
A5: Ss submit "evidence" of their learning. Ss include both photos and videos as "evidence" of successful task completion. Then Ss reflect on what they've learned in a summary and are asked to include vocabulary specific to that lesson. #AppleEDUchat
A5: I’ve had students email parents to provide updates on our class progress, which is an activity I adapted from something similar that @NAEmmanuele does with his students. Most recently, students wrote about strengths/weaknesses at the end of our grading quarter. #AppleEDUchat

A5: every essay assignment has a writing process reflection video where students analyze and reflect on their writing process, what worked, what to change #appleEDUchat
A5 I’ve been having my students reflect on @Flipgrid That way,I can get their voice in what they say. Inflection, expression, and emotion are so important for reflection #AppleEDUchat
Yes! The students have to CC me on all of the messages, so I usually get to see the parent replies that include praises and productive conversations that the students and parents may not have had together otherwise. #AppleEDUchat
A5: Sometimes after a culminating learning experience we'll just have a casual discussion/reflection about it. Nothing really formal...just talking about learning. #AppleEduChat
A5: I like to use discussion posts on our LMS to have students reflect and then respond to each other's posts. It has been a great success #AppleEDUchat
Lots of great ideas in this discussion! I also like a pre-/post- short paragraph reflection on a project. What do you feel you know before? How did that change after? #AppleEDUchat
A5: My kiddos use student rubrics to assess their work before submitting it, @Flipgrid or @RecapThat to create video responses, and #Seesaw to like and comment on their peers work as well as share with parents #AppleEDUchat
A5 @MsLuss & asked our Ss to reflect together. We taught a Holocaust lit. course in iTunes U: https://t.co/PwSy3C507z. We used the discussions to ask a question about how Ss learned where they all responded. Ss loved seeing each other's ideas & reflecting together. #appleeduchat
Still so impressed with this. It's one of my favorite learning experiences to tell people that I've heard about. What an amazing opportunity! #AppleEDUchat
A6: I use course surveys and I am always asking Ss to tell me what else they would like to see, modify, or change in class. I think it could be cool to incorporate an Apple tool to create a "Pineapple Chart"? Just not sure how that would work. Ideas? #AppleEDUchat
A6: I constantly ask students for input/feedback about things we do in class. I also have students complete end-of-course evaluations & apply student feedback moving forward. Here’s a link to one of my course evals if you’re looking to adapt https://t.co/TS4FwvmDCN#AppleEDUchat
A6: If you’re upfront and honest with them that you’re also a learner, and would love to learn how to improve in your profession, any teacher will get useful feedback from his/her students. #AppleEDUChat
A6: if you have created an open classroom with respect on both sides, students will be honest if you ask them. I constantly ask how an assignment went. We just did one a few weeks ago, I thought was Ok, they let me know it wasn’t ok . Just be open to comments #AppleEDUchat
I'm glad to hear that your students feel comfortable being honest. Sometimes I have groups of students who are afraid to hurt my feelings. Other times they have no problem telling me if something was a disaster. #AppleEDUchat
A6 I think that’s easier in higher ed, especially with graduate students. They will provide very detailed, concrete advice simply by asking them. #AppleEDUChat
#AppleEDUchat A6: I agree that being open and honest are key. I recently had such a discussion about the benefit and limitations in the use of past papers to study for mock IB exams...very interesting since they'd therefore seen the exams already!
A6: I think by being consistently vulnerable about your humanity gives Ls an opportunity to learn how to be constructive with others. If we're going to expect them to be receptive to feedback we should be modeling #AppleEduChat
