Let's give a great big Happy Birthday from those of us at
absolutely! How was your first day back to school, Tammy? Did you have students?
Let's take a few minutes and make the introductions happen.
Hey, Kory! Are you all recovered from your epic travels? So sorry I missed you this round. We'll catch up one day!
No students today, just faculty. Students return next Tuesday.
For those new to , I'm John Martin out of beautiful Sandwich, NH. As Dir for Innovation & Tech at , I've been busy!
Good evening Nicole from Northern NY here!
Hi Peg! Thanks for joining us for a conversation about conversations! :)
Hi Nicole! We're glad you could be here this evening.
Welcome to the family Nicole!
I'm Tammy from North Florida. We are on day 4 of rain. Hopefully it will clear up soon. I teach Computer Science Gr. 6-12
So we've been reading a book together this summer: Better Conversations by No pressure if you haven't read.
So true, last time out we had some engaging conversation as we explored ideas presented from the book! https://t.co/cnTGRvK4kM
So we've been reading a book together this summer: Better Conversations by No pressure if you haven't read.
Our low/no pressure book chat will share out some quotes from book for discussion. We are targeting Ch. 5-7 (loosely!) tonight.
That was a great discussion two weeks ago!
I will admit that I'm not entirely caught up. I love this book, but prepping for new year came in first.
Yes. I think the book would work great for a PLN study. Glad we tackled it here to start. Want to reread.
Hello to my friends at . This summer I finished my first funny novella about teaching in a rural town!
https://t.co/DeIcd3TuQV
. As it should! My summer has been spent rewiring our HS, getting rid of 520 old Chromebooks & waiting on 650 new!
Quote 1 is coming up in a second with a question. Feel free to tag your responses A1, A2, etc. and use
Who else has joined us for this evening?
A1: I'm curious to experience what impact I can have on shaping our school now that I've got my first year under my belt.
A1: I am curious to find new teaching methods that will help insure my students learn.
A1. Attended a session w yesterday. I'm most interested to learn stories of those around me, taking time to "notice"
. That's a great perspective going into a new year! We should write this down and see where we end up in 2 months!
Isn't that the trick? If you come up w/ some new ones, let us know!
Great idea for a Chat topic.
Great idea! Writing down goals makes them real and holds us accountable.
Hi, just got back from a walk w my daughter who is finally back fr Korea :) I'm a HS libn near Cville, VA
A1 As Instruc Coach/Rdg Spec, I need 2 find out what Ts need, even if they can't articulate it themselves. Talking & lrng
The teachers on my team will be working together to help each of us become better educators.
That was a big part of Ch. 6-7: taking time to observe interactions & convos. We often jump in instead.
Welcome back to ! Glad your D is back home safe!
Hi Melissa! Glad you are here tonight! Sounds like an amazing adventure for your daughter!
A2 I picked a project to work on involving Ss and images (own & others), finding, citing, sharing because I want to learn more
. Indeed! How do we get past the surface chatter to the real question/need they have?
being able to name what is needed is so key. Struggled with this as a new edu for sure.
Awesome! I will have to read this book!
thx, she loved it. Happy to be here, if I were better at calendars it wouldn't be a lovely surprise!
Me too! Won't be the first time I'm the last to read something. These convo's hv been really good
I think it's a quiet book that has potential to shift culture if groups read it together. Very curious about that!
If we pique your interest in a book that might be useful to you in some way, I think we've succeeded here at ;)
. Robin, that's a great point. Now I have to get the book, if only to share with my district!
Q2 is on its way. Following up on the curiosity point...
time and purposeful attentiveness - so important.
My A2 is actually a question: how reciprocal are our conversations with student learners v. adult learners?
A2: I wonder what I can learn from others when I stop focusing on what I want to say next.
A2 really want more avenues for student feedback, my surveys, their surveys....piecemeal OK but more 2way communication options
A2 Knight talks 3 things to assist in truly learning fr convos: be curious, ask open opinion Qs, be nonjudgmental in listening
A2 Love this! As Instruc Coach, I've lrnd 2 listen-a lot! When I listen I hear what my Ts need https://t.co/CqOJR5nEKn
A2: I wonder what I can learn from others when I stop focusing on what I want to say next.
A2: He cautions against comments that we often disguise in our Qs: demands, set ups, and stumpers. All discourage reciprocity
A2 new push re entrepreneurial interests (but not just business, includes social chg ideas) -curiousity matters
Q3's topic is on building deeper connections. Ch. 6 focuses on how do to this thru observation & specificity in conversations.
Q3 Top down convos can be suffocating, but top down attention is choosing deliberately. Discuss... https://t.co/c0TsJIAOIQ
from Wed night, usually co-hosted by school libn Check it out!
clarifying Q - what does the author mean by top-down attention?
A3: It's about seeing the big picture. When we listen it is easier.
is that like big picture, less judgmental view?
Thanks, Diana. & are the founding moderators! Pls do join us here 4 https://t.co/MMivcdE8Wt
from Wed night, usually co-hosted by school libn Check it out!
Right. I think it relates to shifting culture by grounding relationships in noticing what works first.
top-down has some hint of something to be avoided, but big picture view is a good thing and kind of IS top down
I think it means when we deliberately notice & specifically name positive things,we lay strong foundation 4 convos?
It does leave the message open to interpretation doesn't it? When convos w/ admins are welcomed v. avoided?
Might also refer to training ourselves to look at scenarios differently & as a result this impacts convos?
Yes! Admin may also feel they have 2 critically assess in 2 help folks grow? Starting w/pos shifts relationships.
as long as it's authentically noticing positives, not making up/placating/going thru motions?
sorry - meant Tues, not Weds nights for . I hv the calendar glitch, my sister has maps one! https://t.co/6lJgmKReRA
We love our Tues eve , also does & I do .
Good leadership provides coaching from bottom up.
We will conclude our casual book study in 2 weeks on Aug 23. Considr joining us again 4 ideas fr Ch.7-9 of
. It's been fun, thanks for keeping us organized Robin!
1 thing, post KonMari bks: paying attention to wht gives me joy, looking to see wht gives Ss joy
Very cool. What a neat way of parsing & determining focus!
Thanks for co-side-kicking it tonight along with I hope had extra ice cream tonight!
They are like my children. Watching them grow every week.
thx so much for tonight :)
Are you thinking a chat?? That could be very interesting indeed.
Oh yes, another Happy Birthday for our friend & co-conspirator ! https://t.co/MVhBGCmPyh
Thanks for co-side-kicking it tonight along with I hope had extra ice cream tonight!
